Start-up activity has been booming across the Gulf, as local and foreign entrepreneurs capitalise on a highly connected base of young consumers with high disposable incomes to launch products and services that meet the region’s unique needs. Opportunities are only going to increase across the Gulf and particularly in Saudi Arabia as the Kingdom opens its doors to new business. So here’s why logistics start-ups need smart, connected ports.

About 90 per cent of global trade relies on maritime transportation, according to industry statistics.

Smart ports are seen as a gamechanger for the maritime trade and the wider logistics business, boosting trade expansion through operational efficiencies such as automated transaction processing, faster cargo turnaround times, improved staff safety and a reduced carbon footprint.

5G-based solutions are one example of how an operator will be able to handle multiple gantry cranes while working in a comfortable central control room. In the near future, the technology can be leveraged for multiple applications, such as autonomous driving of automated guided vehicles and Intelligent Guided Vehicle video management in port.

But ports will not rely on 5G alone. Other technologies that will improve efficiencies include solutions such as automated weighbridges to ensure uninterrupted truck flows with streamlined operations, as well as port information and management systems — and improved port capacity, broadly seen as the most pressing issue of the moment.

Abu Dhabi customs signs missioncritical IT infrastructure services agreement with Injazat

Abu Dhabi General Administration of Customs has signed an agreement with the Abu Dhabi based digital transformation service provider, Injazat, to be responsible for missioncritical IT infrastructure of the Abu Dhabi Customs. Signage took place during GITEX Technology Week 2019.

Under the agreement, Injazat is committed to delivering Data Center services of the highest standards and provide a secure and reliable

environment for AD Custom’s mission-critical IT infrastructure and systems through its Tier IV Data Center, the first certified commercially available facility of its kind in the region.

The new contract will be another major win for the company that embarked on the journey of digital transformation and major restructuring since the beginning of the year.

Qafila selected by Intelak for sixth cohort

Qafila, the UAE’s first digital freight forwarder, has been selected by Intelak, the UAE’s leading aviation, travel and tourism-focused incubator, as one of the four winners of its sixth cohort. Winners were selected from more than 100 applications from around the world, following a weeklong intensive pre-incubation bootcamp with ten finalists and a “Shark-Den” style demo day. Judges included Alex Alexander, the Emirates Group Chief Technology Officer; Rania Rostom, Chief Communications & Innovation officer, GE Global; Yousuf Lootah, Director of Tourism Development & Investments at Dubai Tourism and Commerce

Dubai Municipality and Emirates Transport sign new MoU to enhance Dubai Geospatial Infrastructure

On the sidelines of GITEX 2019, Dubai Municipality signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Emirates Transport to cooperate in the field of Geospatial Infrastructure (Geo-Dubai).

The GIS center in the Municipality is the sole official source for collecting digital and descriptive geographical and detailed data and information for the emirate from different local departments, public authorities and institutions, persons and companies operating in the Emirate of Dubai.

The agreement was signed by Eng. Mariam Obaid Al Muhairi, Director of the GIS Center and Mohammed AbdulRahim Baramah, Director of Information Systems, Emirates Transport.

The signing of MoU between Emirates Transport and the Municipality is based on the keenness of both parties to lay the foundations of joint strategic cooperation between them as well as to benefit from the services they provide to ensure corporate integration between them, and developing and strengthening of relations of cooperation in order to contribute to regulating and coordinating the legal procedures and systems applicable to them, according to an institutional framework consistent with, and not conflicting with, the obligations and specializations of each other, and in line with the strategic plans of both the organizations.

Saudia Cargo launches Dry Ice Replenishment service to preserve temperature sensitive

Saudi Airlines Cargo Company announced the launching of its newest service, Dry Ice replenishment services to temperature-controlled products such as perishable and pharmaceuticals which require specific temperature requirements while being transported and stored, this service can be provided to clients 48 hours in advance prior to service delivery.

Saudia Cargo’s Chief Commercial Officer Abdulrahman Al-Mubarak emphasized: “Dry Ice Replenishment service is now available at Jeddah & Riyadh stations for import and transit cargo in the first stage & soon it will be provided to the rest of

the stations as well. Moreover, the Ground Handling Unit always dedicates its effort to provide best industry solutions ensuring the safe & secure handling of all loads & cargoes.”

Building the UAE’s highest road Jebel Jais is part of the Hajar Mountain Range in Ras Al Khaimah.

Innovation in Transport

SERCO SERCO’s work on the Dubai Metro has seen them clinch the award for Innovation in Transport.

The signalling system is designed to send packets of data to and from each train back to a main computer system (Interlocking) that then decides on how each train on the system will operate. This data, if corrupted will stop a train and in the worst case, need to be rescued by a member of staff.

This data is transmitted to the train via a dedicated loop in the track under an AC voltage with an induced frequency injected in the AC signal. This frequency holds the data for each train in that area and as such is an ex-

tremely critical link for operations.

The system is able to generate alarms when a problem is seen but this is based on a set criteria and in normal practice the alarm is generated when data loss is at a pre-defined level as set in the design.

All of the data sent to and from each train is stored on a huge database that lists all communication and data loss. This data is then stored and normally only used when a fault arises and root cause analysis is needed to understand the failure mode and subsequently mitigate it. What this data also holds is the errors in the data that are happening but not to a level the system generates

an alarm. This is where Innovation in transport comes into play aligned with Big Data and Machine Learning.

James Delaney, ATC & Systems Manager at SERCO told Logistics News ME, “It is a big achievement from the team to win the Innovation in Transport Award, it is an awards that everybody aspires to get. The award that we have won is a combination of nearly five years’ worth of work.

The UAE is on a massive drive to reduce its carbon footprint and has committed more than USD 840 million (AED 3.1 billion) to renewable energy in more than 30 countries. The Government has implemented a number of initiatives to develop sustainable infrastructure, from the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, which aims to maximise efficient energy usage, to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050,

We aim to increase our carbon efficiency by 50 per cent, operate 70 per cent of pick-up and delivery services with clean solutions and generate more than 50 per cent of sales from products and services incorporating green solutions. We will also train and certify 80 per cent of employees as “GoGreen” specialists and actively involve them in its environmental and climate protection activities such as planting one million trees every year together with

partners.

In addition, we offer a number of service options for minimizing and/or avoiding logistics-related emissions, waste and other environmental impacts across the entire supply chain.

These solutions present potential for additional savings and have a positive impact on brands.

While AI has become more tangible, measurable, and repeatable across industries, its value remains elusive to a wide range of business leaders. For example, a global report by McKinsey states that 80% of businesses in the accounting industry are still holding back on AI adoption as they are still uncertain about the return on investment due to a lack of concrete business use cases.

The value of AI is clear, but to encourage widespread adoption, we need to demystify AI and provide a clear roadmap for organizations as they look to start implementing AI to their business processes. We are already seeing organizations establish AI Centers of Excellence and other sandboxes to pilot AI capabilities.

This is reminiscent of cloud adoption when it first started – slow initially, followed by quick and widespread adoption once businesses started to see the clear benefits of cloud computing.

Business leaders need to understand that those who can identify applications for AI and implement it in a highly scalable way can get the most value from their structured data, unstructured data, and their employees.

What are the future innovative technologies that TAIGER plans to introduce?

My goal since joining the company in 2016 was to resonate that success and popularity across to the Middle East region and the world. With the Rebranding of the company in 2017 and the expansion into a full-fledge logistics enabler combining a strategically located logistics zones with Value Added Services. We were able to expand our Marketing reach targeting foreign companies wishing to operate in Saudi Arabia and that has won us many accolades and recognitions across the region.

Positioning LogiPoint as one of the market leaders My department contributes in positioning LogiPoint as one of the market leaders in the Saudi logistics Landscape by transforming our traditional marketing activities into modern digital marketing utilising social media and direct to customer marketing, applying the latest technologies in marketing data analysis.

Strong Attributes Having studied and worked in North America prior to moving back to Saudi Arabia in 2013, I have accumulated wealth of interpersonal and intercultural skills that have helped me in adapting and enhancing my capabilities in the Saudi Market. I have utilised these attributes in my work at LogiPoint by enhancing and developing modern Marketing initiatives to establish and leverage business growth and revenue.
