Start-up activity has been booming across the Gulf, as local and foreign entrepreneurs capitalise on a highly connected base of young consumers with high disposable incomes to launch products and services that meet the region’s unique needs. Opportunities are only going to increase across the Gulf and particularly in Saudi Arabia as the Kingdom opens its doors to new business. So here’s why logistics start-ups need smart, connected ports. About 90 per cent of global trade relies on maritime transportation, according to industry statistics. Smart ports are seen as a gamechanger for the maritime trade and the wider logistics business, boosting trade expansion through operational efficiencies such as automated transaction processing, faster cargo turnaround times, improved staff safety and a reduced carbon footprint.
5G-based solutions are one example of how an operator will be able to handle multiple gantry cranes while working in a comfortable central control room. In the near future, the technology can be leveraged for multiple applications, such as autonomous driving of automated guided vehicles and Intelligent Guided Vehicle video management in port. But ports will not rely on 5G alone. Other technologies that will improve efficiencies include solutions such as automated weighbridges to ensure uninterrupted truck flows with streamlined operations, as well as port information and management systems — and improved port capacity, broadly seen as the most pressing issue of the moment. Qafila selected by Intelak for sixth cohort
Qafila, the UAE’s first digital freight forwarder, has been selected by Intelak, the UAE’s leading aviation, travel and tourism-focused incubator, as one of the four winners of its sixth cohort. Winners were selected from more than 100 applications from around the world, following a weeklong intensive pre-incubation bootcamp with ten finalists and a “Shark-Den” style demo day. Judges included Alex Alexander, the Emirates Group Chief Technology Officer; Rania Rostom, Chief Communications & Innovation officer, GE Global; Yousuf Lootah, Director of Tourism Development & Investments at Dubai Tourism and Commerce
Marketing (Dubai Tourism); and Hans Henrik Christensen, VP of Dubai Technology Entrepreneur Campus (DTEC) at Dubai Silicon Oasis. Upon being selected as one of the four winning startups, Atif Rafiq, CEO and Co-founder at Qafila, said, “This is an honour and an exciting time for us in our journey. This will allow us to have access over the next two months to key industry experts who can provide mentorship and help us fine tune our air cargo module, so that we can offer the same level of transparency and ease of shipping we currently offer for sea cargo. Our cofounder, Jithin Manoharan,

our CTO, Imtiaz Hassan and I are grateful to Intelak for the opportunity to grow our business and provide a much-needed tool for air shipments.” Qafila not only moves freight, it simplifies logistics. It uses technology to offer a digital freight & logistics platform where it currently supports FCL (Full Container Load) by ocean with plans to expand into air shipments and LCL (Less Container Load) by 2020. The platform is designed to enhance the customer experience, streamline operational efficiencies and provide around the clock customer support. Qafila’s platform offers shippers instant quotes,
the convenience of online booking, management of shipment and finally track & trace across the supply chain with live notifications on a mobile app. This allows the shipper to create operational efficiencies, saving them not only time but cost in man-hours through a very transparent process. Rafiq continued, “One of the key drivers for our business is the lack of transparency on the status of shipments and the needs and documentation requirements at multiple levels between shippers and different stakeholders up to the final customer. We hope to reduce man-hours and unnecessary documentation with a digital alternative.” www.cbnme.com

Innovation in Transport
SERCO SERCO’s work on the Dubai Metro has seen them clinch the award for Innovation in Transport. The signalling system is designed to send packets of data to and from each train back to a main computer system (Interlocking) that then decides on how each train on the system will operate. This data, if corrupted will stop a train and in the worst case, need to be rescued by a member of staff. This data is transmitted to the train via a dedicated loop in the track under an AC voltage with an induced frequency injected in the AC signal. This frequency holds the data for each train in that area and as such is an ex-
28 | Logistics News ME | November 2019
tremely critical link for operations. The system is able to generate alarms when a problem is seen but this is based on a set criteria and in normal practice the alarm is generated when data loss is at a pre-defined level as set in the design. All of the data sent to and from each train is stored on a huge database that lists all communication and data loss. This data is then stored and normally only used when a fault arises and root cause analysis is needed to understand the failure mode and subsequently mitigate it. What this data also holds is the errors in the data that are happening but not to a level the system generates
an alarm. This is where Innovation in transport comes into play aligned with Big Data and Machine Learning. James Delaney, ATC & Systems Manager at SERCO told Logistics News ME, “It is a big achievement from the team to win the Innovation in Transport Award, it is an awards that everybody aspires to get. The award that we have won is a combination of nearly five years’ worth of work. The Logistics and Transport Awards showcases the best in the industry and a lot of the hard work put in can get ignored and easily missed so having events like this can showcase companies that truly deserved to be seen.”

Leading Woman Professional of the Year
Paula Bellamy, Oceanwide Logistics “This is the first award I have won in my 35+ year career within the Logistics industry and did not realize what a difference it would make at this time in my life. The award ceremony itself was beautifully organized with some very interesting people in attendance and I have to say also some very large companies within our Industry, our company OL Dubai is small by comparison and to know we have won 2 awards at this
event made me feel very humble and proud of my team and myself. I have been in the Middle East now for 9 years and started my company from zero, I handpicked my team and mentor them every day and they teach me in return. I have learnt so much from my multi-national team which inspires me to push forward every day. The award is not just for me it’s an award for my entire team and then also for women in Lo-
gistics, there are so many unsung heroes in our industry its untrue, Logistics is very customer service based and many people work very long hours to ensure cargo arrives on time. I appreciate this award as it also given me different paths to follow in contacts that I have made, my social media following has increased greatly and I have a pinnacle to highlight now when I tell my story of my journey, said Paula Bellamy, Managing Director of Oceanwide Logistics Dubai.

CALLING THE SHOTS Alex Rentier, Managing Director Dubai Metro and Tram at Serco ME, on how they are addressing an overcrowded public transport system Amidst the presence of modernised public transport solutions across today’s most advanced cities in the world, one of the key challenges that these systems continuously face is the burden presented by an overcrowded public transport segment. Simply put, an overcrowded public transport system will result in crowding challenges across stations, terminals and the vehicles itself. Safety is of course the most important concern, but crowd behaviors can also have key impact on operations, such as irregularities, delays, and affecting the whole attractiveness of the public transport system. A decreased comfort level longer travel time and psychological and emotional distress can also impact wider
46 | Logistics News ME | November 2019
mobility patterns in cities and shift commuters to less sustainable modes. An example of effective crowd control solutions in transport systems can be seen in how Serco Middle East, an international service company specialising in the delivery of essential public services, supports Dubai Metro. Serco’s Middle East (ME) Division continued to oversee the provision of world-class services to Dubai’s public transport sector throughout Eid Al Adha 2019 via supporting the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) integrated transportation modes by catering to more than 1.3 million passengers on the Dubai Metro. Equipped with years of experience and the
required tools, Serco ME’s team enhanced its position as a leading provider of transport operations and integrated traffic management services in the region through successfully managing the high volume of passengers across both red and green lines while implementing effective crowd control services measures throughout the entire period of various special events ranging from the Eid holidays, New Year’s Eve and other annual national holidays. By attaining years of experience in operating railways globally and working in partnership with its clients and an array of competent professionals, Serco devised a wide range of crowd control scenarios that were ready to be

deployed if and when required, including client communication, safety arrangements, security measures, operational controls and maintenance preparations. The high confidence that the RTA has placed in Serco to deliver a worldclass level of safety, operational performance and customer service was reflected this past March when the organisation signed a contract with Serco extending the operation and maintenance of the Dubai Metro to 2021. Alex Rentier, Managing Director Dubai Metro and Tram at Serco ME said: “Public transport has witnessed a surge in popularity globally in recent years and rising congestion in urban areas, including Dubai, is a primary factor. As a result, there is pressure to guarantee that existing public transport infrastructure is utilised to its maximum capabilities in order to serve customers’ needs and ensure their satisfaction. We at Serco are always prepared for such growth and fully believe in continued development in terms of financial efficiency of public transport. This is proven with us successfully as we deliver operational performance levels on the Dubai Metro with a high train service availability of 99.9 per cent and a punctuality of 99.7 per cent in 2018, with 204 million journeys throughout the same period.” “We are delighted to operate and maintain one of the world’s most advanced urban rail systems. The Dubai Metro has evolved to become an established icon of the regional and global transport industry and we take great pride in our partnership with RTA – who have played a huge role in the development of integrated and sustainable transportation systems for Dubai’s residents and visitors. We look forward with great anticipation to continuing our relationship with RTA in the years ahead and supporting their vision to provide ‘safe and smooth transport for all,’” he added. Serco are the first rail operators in the Middle East and have set the benchmark for rail management expertise, providing world-class services and a safe operation to the public and the communities it serves. The company’s highly experienced staff can resonate values throughout communities by being innovative in relation to service delivery and are fully trained in operational safety. In addition, they interact directly and effectively to manage congestion, while practical solutions such as flexible queue management and station entry budgeting are incorporated into all crowd control plans – which are always developed and executed in close cooperation with relevant stakeholders such as building owners, police and emergency services.

GREEN LOGISTICS Adopting green logistics can make a difference to the environment and your business By Mike Barrett, Vice President Operations, DHL Express UAE
The UAE is on a massive drive to reduce its carbon footprint and has committed more than USD 840 million (AED 3.1 billion) to renewable energy in more than 30 countries. The Government has implemented a number of initiatives to develop sustainable infrastructure, from the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, which aims to maximise efficient energy usage, to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050,
48 | Logistics News ME | November 2019
which aims to produce 75 per cent of Dubai’s energy from clean sources by 2050. This is tremendous encouragement for the private sector to do more to reduce its carbon footprint and environmental impact. In fact, at DHL we believe that we must work together now to identify and reduce emissions and make our businesses more sustainable if we want our planet to remain habitable for genera-
tions to come. Logistics plays a central role in the global economy and therefore we have a crucial part to play in the way business is done with regard to the environmental impact. We have made it our mission to achieve zero emissions by 2050, and to do this we are championing green logistics solutions across our global markets through our global environmental protection

program called “Go Green”. As part of our ‘Go Green’ drive to reduce logistics-related emissions in the Middle East, we are turning environmentally damaging waste into sustainable polyester yarn to be used as staff eco-uniforms. We have created high quality uniforms from plastic bottles that are identical to the current DHL uniforms. Given that a large number of plastic water bottles used around the world are dumped into landfills which pose a high risk to the environment, we felt there was an opportunity for us to do our due diligence to create a sustainable living environment. This may seem infinitesimal, but even a small change in corporate work wear
can have a big impact on the environment and set a good example for employees worldwide. We are focused on establishing ourselves as an environmental protection leader, consistently aiming to drive the importance of sustainability. We aim to increase our carbon efficiency by 50 per cent, operate 70 per cent of pick-up and delivery services with clean solutions and generate more than 50 per cent of sales from products and services incorporating green solutions. We will also train and certify 80 per cent of employees as “GoGreen” specialists and actively involve them in its environmental and climate protection activities such as planting one million trees every year together with
partners. In addition, we offer a number of service options for minimizing and/or avoiding logistics-related emissions, waste and other environmental impacts across the entire supply chain. These solutions present potential for additional savings and have a positive impact on brands. In fact, a sustainable approach to supply chains can help reduce costs, particularly in logistics, due to a reduction of transportation costs and reuse of products and materials. Looking ahead, we hope more businesses will show commitment to intensify their environmentally friendly and socially responsible actions while increasing their economic success.

Interview
Results-Driven AI Kasun Illankoon spoke to Sinuhe Arroyo, the CEO of TAIGER, on how AI is playing a crucial role in increasing sustainability for businesses Tell us how Taiger has been performing over the past months? TAIGER is the market leader and pioneer of Knowledge Process Optimization. We have been growing at a phenomenal rate. In the last 12 months, we more than doubled both our revenue and headcount year-on-year. This has earned us the distinction of being among the top five mostvalued AI companies in Singapore. Earlier this year, we secured US$25 million in Series B funding and we are now valued at US$110 million. This has made us one of the fastest growing startups in Asia. Moreover, our cutting-edge AI solutions have garnered

awards and recognition from organizations such as Gartner, Citibank and Red Herring. How can organizations in the UAE go paperless by leveraging solutions from TAIGER, in line with the Paperless Strategy? Document processing exists in every industry. It is both labor intensive and costly, making it difficult for organizations to scale their operations. AI can be harnessed to implement a paperless strategy, but it takes a special set of AI technologies to emulate human-like intelligence and propel organizations towards a true paperless work environment.
TAIGER’s patented approach of melding various AI disciplines to process unstructured data (such as power of attorney, board of resolution etc.) and structured documents yield an industry leading accuracy rate of more than 85%. This is also backed up by the contractual KPI we work with clients to determine and achieve, helping banks and government agencies reduce paper-driven processes, saving costs and processing time. As an example, TAIGER worked with Santander Bank in Spain to transform the way they onboard non-customer SMEs. By automating and digitalizing the main steps of onboarding, Santander successfully reduced the time taken

ing Business Process Automation (BPA). With this, organizations in the UAE will be able to automate, simplify, and improve on tasks that require specialized intelligence. An example of this would be the automation of medical claims processing and reimbursement or the digital automation of processing trade settlements. To build a sustainable business and technology infrastructure in UAE, organizations must be able to harness technology that is scalable and applicable to tasks of all levels of complexity. This is where KWA/KPO comes in, to process large amounts of unstructured data or to significantly cut down on the manual human effort that is needed. This helps organizations improve efficiency, save cost, and reduce risk – critical factors that ensure sustainability of businesses in UAE.
for new customers to open an account from an average of seven days to just 15 minutes compared to the traditional in-branch process. How do you enable digitization and business sustainability through AI and cognitive technologies? AI and cognitive technologies exploit the meaning of structured and unstructured information with accuracy to streamline key business processes. The result of this is increased efficiency and an overall reduction of costs and human risks. To make this happen, TAIGER has a specialized portfolio of products which include intelligent information extraction, semantic search engine and humanistic virtual assistant. • Intelligent information extraction (TAIGER EXTRACT) – Automatically identify, extract, cleanse, validate and store key pieces of information from any kind of documents with a record 85% and above accuracy, with proven 90% and above reduction of processing time. • Semantic search engine (TAIGER SEARCH) – Going beyond mere key-
words to understand users’ complex queries, related content, expand searches and recover corresponding documents more efficiently and precisely. • Humanistic virtual assistant (TAIGER CONVERSE) – Understands complex user queries, and informs, recommends and transacts, with a record 80% and above deflection rate. Together, these solutions help automate manual yet complex tasks intelligently, driving business sustainability by taking on tedious but mission critical processes. Tell us what role AI and Knowledge Process Automation plays in helping UAE meet its goals for a sustainable infrastructure? Knowledge Process Automation/Optimization or Knowledge Worker Automation (KPO/ KWA) refers to a style of automation where back-end installed software integrates with an organization’s core systems through APIs as part of an overarching organizational transformation initiative. KWA/KPO automates complex cognitive tasks involving comprehension, intelligence, skill, and judgement complement-
Are there any obstacles or barriers you foresee with the use of AI? While AI has become more tangible, measurable, and repeatable across industries, its value remains elusive to a wide range of business leaders. For example, a global report by McKinsey states that 80% of businesses in the accounting industry are still holding back on AI adoption as they are still uncertain about the return on investment due to a lack of concrete business use cases. The value of AI is clear, but to encourage widespread adoption, we need to demystify AI and provide a clear roadmap for organizations as they look to start implementing AI to their business processes. We are already seeing organizations establish AI Centers of Excellence and other sandboxes to pilot AI capabilities. This is reminiscent of cloud adoption when it first started – slow initially, followed by quick and widespread adoption once businesses started to see the clear benefits of cloud computing. Business leaders need to understand that those who can identify applications for AI and implement it in a highly scalable way can get the most value from their structured data, unstructured data, and their employees. What are the future innovative technologies that TAIGER plans to introduce? At TAIGER, we are focusing our research and development efforts in technologies that relate to deep learning and self-learning. We hope to integrate these cutting-edge technologies into our portfolio of solutions to help organizations further streamline key business processes that are time and labor intensive.
