JUNE The meaning of being a father
Being a Dad/Grandfather and trying to find a work life/balance here at GoTo isn’t as challenging as it has been in other companies that I’ve worked for. The management team is very supportive of my fatherly responsibilities. I get to see my grandson when he comes to visit the house with my wife, and I’m able to take that daily break that I need just to spend some time with him. When my boys and their wives need me I’m able to also be there for them, via calls, or running out to help them while my team supports me. Then in return as a Manager I try to be as understanding and flexible with my team and their parental requirements. Family is important and should come first. The world has changed so much from the time when I first became a father, there always seemed to be a tough balance between getting all the daily work requirements done and then rushing off to a baseball, football or basketball game to ensure that I was there to support my boys. While they were growing up (as they are now grown and both married) I stretched myself to ensure that they knew I was there for them to support them in their sports, academically while in school, and emotionally to be able to help them get through the things life was throwing at them.

What is Juneteenth? Freedom Day
JUNETEENTH Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the Union Army marched into Galveston Bay, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free the last enslaved people in the United States. This led to approximately 250,000 enslaved Black people across the state finally being freed. Though the Emancipation Proclamation had officially freed all enslaved people over two years prior, it was not enforced in places still under Confederate control, prompting further action from the Union Army. While Juneteenth was recognized as a state holiday in Texas in 1980, it was not recognized at the national level until it was designated a federal holiday last year. While Juneteenth began as a recognition of the events in Texas, over the years it has become something more than that. Communities recognize it in different ways, with many unique traditions passed along the generations and new ones being created still today. For many, the day is all about celebrating Black culture, reflecting on the significance of once enslaved people being granted their right to freedom, and the hope, uncertainty, and trials the Black community has experienced in the U.S.

Carmen Monoxide, the Fashion “Queerdo” Who Shaped Guatemala’s Drag Scene Carmen Monoxide is the stage name of Ernesto Méndez, Born in Montpellier, France, but raised in Guatemala City. A drag queen and performer, most known for being a the First Guatemalan to be of Love for the Arts. In Guatemala, LGBTQ+ rights still face constant challenges. However, the performer’s drag has transformed from pretty, glamorous gowns to a larger variety of ensembles that showcase more of her quirky personality.
