Time and Motion Sketches taken of viewpoints from different times of
Sketchbook pages which focus more on the element of
the day using just a black pen. Having such a broad
time and looking at the old. Drawing from an old camera
brief meant that there was very little to grab onto at the
and using old ephemera in collage to create the feeling of
beginning so drawing what could be seen at different
something from the past.
times during the day seemed like the easier place to start.
Time and Motion Looking into old objects and focusing on the typewriter and the mechanisms used to type a letter onto a page. The illustration on the right explains the expression that can be created when typing using a typewriter because the pressure of someone hitting a key relates to how hard the letter come out on the page.
Time and Motion These photos were taken in response to how a typewriter works, a typewriter was then used to type instructions of how it works onto the photos. The images were placed in the middle of the page to give it space around it and room to type underneath.
Time and Motion A simple book with slits added into each page so the photos can slot in. The illustrated typewriter on the front page contrasts the photos on the inside of the book and the ribbon holding the book together adds a nice homemade touch.
Old Vs. New/Post Vs Email Looking at turning the Queen into an emoticon to attach to an email. Funny faces have been illustrated onto the Queen to show how someone was feeling whilst sending their email. Having only basic knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign this was an opportunity to experiment and turn the illustrations into a computerised image and trying out different colours
Old Vs. New/Post Vs Email Illustrated ideas of how to get the postman and the people helping the letter on its journey to engage with the envelope. Turing a letter into an email and an unsuccessful attempt at getting people to engage with the envelope, however this could be due to the small distance it travelled because it was sent to myself.
Old Vs. New/Post Vs Email Map envelope- The main idea behind it was to eliminate a step in the process of sending a letter to make it easier for people. By creating an envelope with the address already on which you can simply print out, write on and use as the envelope eliminates the need to buy a separate envelopes.
CONTRAST CONTRAST contrast CONTRAST CONTRAST CONTRAST CONTRAST CONTRAST CONTRAST
Contrast Logo Creating a logo which represented the word ‘contrast’ firstly just in black and white and then turning into a colour design. The text based ones worked really well but when they were scaled down to 20mmx20mm they couldn’t be seen and didn’t work so I chose one of the more simplier designs to try in colour.
5 Random Words The pairs of words we were given were completely random and had nothing in common, so to show this through typography each letter was handrawn in a different style and typeface but put together I hand drew each letter using a different typefaces to show the randomness of the words.
How to make a pinhole camera/Infographics Doing the illustrations using a dipping pen and ink meant being extra careful when drawing the images because they were quite small and a smudge or a blob of ink would change the image completely and make it unreadable therefore not work for its purpose.
Pinhole Camera The images produced from the camera have a real sene
The black and white images are really interesting
of movement to them and you begin to focus on what
because of the haziness of the image and then the sharp
you are seeing in the photo and not what the photograph
black outline of where the matchbox has been cut out. It
has been taken of. You start to look at the imperfections
adds a handmade feeling and becomes really interesting
but not as imperfections, but as the best and most
when the film isn’t aligned properly and it goes across
interesting parts of the image.

Paper Starting by using obvious ways to manipulate the paper like cutting and tearing even though it was predicable. The restricted limitations eventually lead to thinking outside the box and stretch the brief to get the most interesting outcome possible. Using an old book the pages have been folded so that when it is closed the word fold can been read across the side of the pages.

After messing about trying to cutout of an empty film I had, I realised that you can scratch away the back. I started to try and draw my infographics into it and then created all the instructions onto the strip of film adding bits of text to clarify what to do.
After doing the five words brief I decided to experiment in my sketchbook using each page to draw another letter using only a pen. I really like range from really simple lettering to much more complex drawing .
After the Typography workshop where we had been creating calenders I tried out a few more ideas in my sketchbook for the different months playing around with different ways of showing the numbers.
A few pages of experimentations in my sketchbook. These developed from the time an motion brief after exploring drawing a typewriter in a variety of different medias and using the contrast of very watery neutral paint and the harsh upward biro shading.
Trying the sketches out in stitch because it was easy to create vertical lines similar to those created using the biro. I used tracing paper because I didn’t have any fabric available and it is quite strong and didn’t fall apart when I began to stitch into it a lot. Also the transparency of the tracing paper meant that all of the stitching underneath could be seen through and all of the loose threads at the back became a part of the image.
After the Time and Motion brief I really enjoyed drawing from typewriters so I continued to play around with text and illustration together. I then scanned the image in and began to crop it and manipulating the images. Like in my work for Time and Motion I then printed these out onto 4x6 in photo paper.
