FROM THE EDITOR The word “trend” adopts many different interpretations, it is defined as a direction in which something is developing or changing. The term “trending” has emerged into our daily vocabulary through the evolution of social media within our generation and translates to the interest of a topic which recurs over social media platforms. Blend publication is a platform of expression, covering a broad range of topics including fashion, music, popular culture and lifestyle. As Blend are all about covering the topics you care about it was only fitting that our first edition was themed “Trend”. Each article within this issue is about a topic which was trending on social media platforms, such as Twitter and Instagram, over the current months.

BACK OF THE LINE: WHY IS MENTAL HEALTH STILL NOT THE PRIORITY? BY LOIS WANDLESS
17

A
recent study by
BBC has investigated the increase of mental health problems in our country. It is no shock that mental health problems are notably on the increase BBC claims this could be due to “Economic uncertainty, social media, the influence of the media and rising expectations of what life should be like”. BBC also explains that mental-health problems usually begin within young ages in the UK, with half of mentalhealth problems being established by 14 and three quarters by the age of 24. Although these problems begin at a young age, The Children’s society explain that “70% of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age”. This is due to the UK’s declining mental health services, BBC explains that although £1.28 billion has been earmarked for the services between 2015 to 2011, in fact 40% of
mental health trusts have seen their budgets cut since 2015.The impacts of cut funding is proving harsh on our country; some patients are waiting up to a year for an appointment with a counsellor and others being discharged from hospitals for being “too complex” for the NHS to aid. The BBC describes mental health to be “the poor cousin compared to the spending on physical ailments” with 23% of NHS activity being taken up by mental illness and only 11% of funding being given. With the lack of money or time to be given for people requesting counsellors or therapists it is no wonder that an increasing number of patients are being prescribed to medication. Doctors are becoming more likely to prescribe antidepressants for a longer period with research suggesting it is the most effective way of treating patients, however more patients are reporting that they are not receiving effective help. The cuts

ď ľ The cut to mental health funds within the UK have not gone unnoticed with many people feeling that the support they are given is weak. In the era of the social media rise many people have taken to social media to voice their opinions about mental health services. With many of these opinions being negative I wanted to further explore the depth of another’s experiences. I spoke to Hannah* after he posted an interesting tweet expressing their concern with their experiences and the services.
20
What experiences have you personally went through with mental health services? Do you feel that mental health services go far enough to help people who are struggling in the UK? I feel that medication and talking services are the only thing offered to those struggling at the minute, which are not good enough for me personally. Furthermore, I think talking therapies are very successful and helpful for those with minor mental
How do you feel personally about the current state of mental health services within the UK? I think the mental health services in the UK are the worst they have ever been. It is so clear as a person who has been in and out of different mental health services over time that there is not enough funding or help for those suffering with mental health and unfortunately I feel that I will only get taken seriously if I am at a high
health issues, however the services provided are currently not sufficient enough to help those suffering with problems worse than this. In my own experience, being offered talking therapies for severe mental health problems has only had a detrimental effect on my mental health. If you are one of those fortunate enough to be offered therapy, the waiting list can be so long that there is a risk your mental health can deteriorate over this time.
I’ve had a lot of bad experiences with professionals in relation to my mental health. The most common one from doctors in the past is that I am too “normal and functioning to be diagnosed with a personality disorder, despite symptoms ruining my everyday life. In my opinion GPs do not have enough knowledge on mental health. I have mentioned my suicidal thoughts to the doctors many times for them to be brushed off as normal due to my medical history. It took me seven years of different therapies and medication to be accepted for a proper assessment by the community mental health team for a diagnosis, something I had been aware I needed for years. The assessment I had was another bad experience, after discussing a lot of personal things that I found difficult I was not taken as seriously as I believe I should have been.
