ABOUT
Greetings ! My name is Zhi Ming and I’m a Master’s of Architecture student from Malaysia. As a design value, I am personally interested in ideas of Placemaking and how Architecture can be a part of larger urban narratives.
I hope to find the right balance between global approaches and local expressions, to discover Architecture that is receptive to the new yet relatable to the existing. Also, as a core value I believe there can always be a place of balance between data driven design and the irreplaceable human touch.
Currently based in UN Studio Amsterdam, I have learnt to appreciate the quality and richness of working in an internationally diverse environment. Moving forward, I want to continuously engage in a dynamic work environment which inspires and motivates me to grow and develop both profesionally and personally.

A PHENOMENOLOGY WITH WATER
Programme: Well Being, Learning, Therapy
Scale: 23000 SQM
Location: Sentul, Kuala Lumpur
Type: Academic
Features: World Architecture Festival Malaysia 2022, Architecture and Well-Being
With Water Treatment Plants and Facilities, there appears not a constantly dire need for obtaining potable or usable water. However, such has brought evidence that the transaction of humans with water are relatively utilitarian, and our values of water has changed much, as suggested by Schauberger. Where our ancestors saw it as the source of life, today it appears more so a chemical substance for utilitarian purposes. Therefore, can architecture be used as a medium to renegotiate man’s view of water beyond the utilitarian?
The Proposal endeavors to explore such questions via Phenomenological and sensorial means, being located next to the Gombak River. Tying both thematic interests and programmatic responses to the context, a Water Therapy Healing and Research Center is proposed.

CELEBRATING THE EVERYDAY LIFE
Programme: Agritourism, Learning, Co-Working
Scale: 6500 SQM
Location: Kampung Bharu, Kuala Lumpur
Type: Competition
Features: University Internal Design Forum 2021
Drawing references to notions of the Extraordinary Mundane (Thomas ,Sommer, Luise, et all(2019)), the community cultures of planting in Kampung Bharu are being captured through a series of street studies. At such the proposal endeavors to turn an element of everyday life into a celebrated event.
Conceived as a place of exchange between the city and the village, the utilization of Green plots and Hybrid urban forms will activate the educational and communal programmes, while being housed within a Dynamicallyshaped Timber Louvered Roof evoking reminiscent local forms.

FINDING THE WAU KITE NARRATIVE
Programme: Gallery, Learning Centre. Cultural
Scale: 3000 SQM
Location: Medan Pasar, Kuala Lumpur
Type: Academic
Despite a vibrant cultural programme, navigating the urban realm of the site is a fast-paced and restless experience.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Kite flying culture of Wau in Malaysia, the proposal celebrates the idea of restfulness and relaxation. This translates into a spatial approach of a new plaza, urban nodes, and spatial galleries for
moments of pause and slowed movement, while programmatically enhancing the art culture identity of the site.
Through massing and corresponding to heights of adjacent urban forms, the proposal also creates a new skyline within the urban field, utilizing its strategic corner location in the city

A HIGHRISE FOR AN URBAN INFILL
Programme: Residential
Scale: 12000 SQM
Location: Pudu Market, Kuala Lumpur
Type: Academic
Sandwiched between two urban forms, the site calls forth a response to the horizontally dense and crowded environment of the Pudu Wet Market. Utilizing verticality as a strategy, the proposal suggests to reduce density per floor in exchange for an increase in habitable floors. This will not only maximize views, but also provide relief as a vertical dwelling from the surrounding overcrowded environment.
Differentiation of residential units in plan and facade treatment helps create uniqueness and personalization for dwellers, while various breakout spaces encourage interaction between residents from different floors.
