COLUMBUS MATCH PREVIEW Irish Steve

fter another loss away to Houston last week, the Fire return to Toyota Park with their heads held high after a good performance down south. But for not some slack defending, the Fire would have picked up one, if not three points. Columbus tonight brings about a much different challenge, but a confidence boosting win very much needed. One positive that most fans are overlooking is the wealth of options Frank Klopas has at his disposal in the midfield and up front. Yes, I know, the Fire have only scored five goals this season and three of them came in one game, but look at the other side of the coin. On any given day, we can start Duka, Rolfe, Nyarko, Thompson, Paladini, Alex, Atouba, or Lindpere (just to name a few) on the wings, depending on the opponent. In attack, we also have plenty of choices. Last season, we saw the same starting XI for many games with little squad rotation and oftentimes the Fire’s lineup was not difficult to predict. That is different this season and I expect it to change at least somewhat from game to game. Would we all like a big name goal scorer like a Bieler (Sporting KC), absolutely, but I truly feel there are goals in this team and they will start going in. The other end of the pitch is what’s most concerning, especially coming into today’s match against Columbus. To say that the Fire miss Arne Friedrich would be a massive understatement. Color commentator Kevin Egan described Friedrich as the most

important player for his team in MLS and I believe him. Without Friedrich and with the ever-changing starters at right-back, the Fire’s defensive form has been woeful by their standards. Nobody has conceded more goals (12) or has a worse goal difference (-7) than the Fire this season. Defensive mistakes cost the team again last week and a clean sheet against Columbus would be a huge move in the right direction. Columbus comes to town riding a four game unbeaten streak and have won away from home twice already this season. Dom Oduro left the Fire for Cbus in the offseason and will be looking to stick it to the Fire technical staff for shipping him out by scoring against his old club. Oduro divided Fire fans, with some loving his speed and fan friendliness, while others were critical of his finishing ability. His pace will certainly test the Fire’s defense and Columbus will be looking to draw the Fire’s defenders higher up the pitch in order to leave space for Dom to run into. Cutting off the supply to Higuain will also be important for the Fire, especially because the Crew look to get to ball to the Argie whenever possible. Though the match today is a not a must win for the Fire, a loss would be very tough to take, especially considering the teams next match is away to the in-form Montreal Impact. Keeping a clean sheet should be the goal for tonight and if the Fire can do that, they give themselves a great chance of going home with three massive points in the bag. ■

ourneyman Distillery, albeit just over two years since opening, abounds with history. The distillery, tasting room and retail shop are housed in the historic Featherbone Factory building in Three Oaks, Michigan. The space was once home to the Featherbone Company, founded by E.K. Warren in the 1800s to produce ladies corsets and buggy whips. It is easy to imagine Warren, a strict prohibitionist, rolling over in his grave at the thought of a distillery now occupying his former building. But given the beautiful interpretation of the space by Journeyman he may well appreciate the building reborn in such a wonderful light. Upon entering Journeyman it was plain to see that the young company designed the space with a deliberate nod to the building’s past. From the original maple factory floors to the reclaimed barn wood walls, the historical element of the building is allencompassing. The steam-era aesthetic doesn’t end with the surroundings of the distillery and comes across quite distinctly in the final Journeyman product: from the waxed tops of the rectangular bottles to the rustic and artistically designed labels, here we have a company that is completely on point with their chosen vibe. The distillery itself is one of the few certified all-organic distilleries currently operating in the United States. Journeyman is seemingly as dedicated to supporting local family farms as a means to produce their variety of spirits as they are to maintaining their historical image. I was lucky enough to be a part of a recent bottling party at Journeyman, where the
term Handcrafted Spirits was exhibited in the truest sense of the word. We had about 10 people working the line, where the process started at the person filling bottles with Bilberry Black Hearts Gin, to the corker, on to the taping and waxing of the bottle tops, after which the wax was left to dry. Then the finishing touches of labeling and hand numbering the bottles were added before being boxed up and stacked. Before I arrived I expected at least some of the process to be automated and we would be busy waxing tops and numbering labels, yet every part of the process was done by hand. For our services, we were treated by our down-to-earth line leader, Doug Babcock, to a few cocktails and a tasty baked mac and cheese for dinner. Babcock, after founder Bill Welter, was one of the first Journeyman employees and currently acts as Distiller – among many other hats he wears as a function of working for a small, startup distillery. I imbibed the Bees Knees, featuring the same gin we were bottling, freshly squeezed lemon and orange juice, and honey, which was a refreshing and fitting choice as a pre-prohibition-era cocktail. Later, the Featherbone Bourbon Whiskey Old Fashioned did not disappoint. So next time you’re looking for a classy bottle of gin at Binny’s or Whole Foods, skip the Hendrick’s and go for the Journeyman Distillery Bilberry Black Hearts Gin, which is in a similar price class and every drop as good. On top of that, you can drink easy knowing you are supporting a Midwestern all-organic distillery committed to maintaining a true local ethos. ■

Section 8 had an impressive record of travel in 2012 with real presence at every away game - from a low of 8 fans on 09/12 in Toronto to a high of 610 fans on 05/26 in Columbus. Here is the summary part 1:
Saturday, March 17, 2012: Montreal - 80 Fire supporters Match at the Olympic Stadium against the MLS debutant that was close to a sellout. Great 90-minute support and several locals came over to express their gratitude. Sunday, April 1, 2012: Denver - 16 Fire supporters Two driving parties met at the stadium to provide almost non-stop, 90-minute support. The team, however, found it tough to play at a mile-high pitch. Alleged sexual promiscuity by one S8C traveler turned out to be just an offer to check tire pressure. Saturday, April 21, 2012: Toronto - 65 Fire supporters S8C organized a bus with a stay at Global Backpackers that already became a standard fixture during regular season. The march to the stadium from the hostel was led by the S8C Chairman, Joel, who managed to show the fellow S8OT’ers as much real estate property as Toronto had to offer in a sensible way. Full, 90-minute support featured flying hats of some Canadian birthday party and lots of other fun. The drive back home was made pleasurable with a choice lecture of quick end-to-the-season newspaper articles about Fire killing Toronto FC. Friday, May 4, 2012: Los Angeles (CHV) - 20 Fire supporters A slightly leisurely S8OT appearance with vocal support only at a couple of moments during the game, especially after the goals. A great Marco Pappa goal in the waning seconds of the extra time gave Fire the win.

Sunday, May 20, 2012: Portland - 23 Fire supporters A good showing of the usual S8OT suspects with good support most of the game that caused several rows of locals to find other seats. FCPT had a great showing and the atmosphere was just fantastic. Rarely are games anywhere in the world played in such a setting and S8OT was proud to be a part of it while we received many kind words and thanks from locals. Saturday, May 26, 2012: Columbus - 610 Fire supporters The most significant S8OT event this year and a great success. This trip constituted the highest away attendance of Fire supporters in the history of the club, beating the previous record of 600 supporters at the 2000 MLS Cup final against Kansas City in Washington. This journey was epic from the start to finish with many of the 9 buses getting lost, finding way and getting lost again, great weather, enormous tailgate provided by Los Comales, massive cheering in the parking lot and on the way to the away support sections, great tifo display, non-stop cheering, commemorative scarves, rivers of alcohol but fortunately no arrests or hospital visits. It was a difficult match on the field in such a hot weather but Fire tried to overcome the deficit and came close. This event was co-organized by S8C and Fire Front Office and this cooperation is a sign of a great future of away travel ahead of us. Tuesday, May 29, 2012: Pontiac, MI - 45 Fire supporters a mid-week appearance of Fire faithful in a setting no different than a suburb of Detroit which is actually a well-sung-about standard, at least in the Eastern Conference. Great vocal support throughout the entire match and extra time that seemed to be on par with the locals. An interesting fact was that the game was in an indoor facility on a regular-sized (fake grass) field so the voice of 45 supporters really carried. Unfortunately, the Fire team was met with enough resistance to mark it the first and final USOC appearance this year. S8C provided a bus to this match which definitely helped achieve the high attendance for this difficult date. Saturday, June 02, 2012: Foxboro, MA - 21 Fire supporters a very rainy night cooled down some of the S8OT participants slightly but the horn line and hard core was there cheering loudly and proudly for almost the entire time. Unfortunately, the team could not do anything on the pitch and lost. â–
