Modular System

SYSTEMS canteen project [ YEAR

2017 ]

The brief required a design proposal from a previous project to transform aspects of that design into a modular system. Subdividing an object into smaller parts called modules. These parts can then be independently designed and then used in different configurations. My idea stemmed from shutters inspired by a trip to Palermo and the traditional style of italian windows. The development led to japanese style and their use of transparency and shadows.

CHAPTER ONE MODULAR SYSTEMS - CANTEEN RE-DEVELOPMENT

1 re. development

CANTEEN PROJECT Location | Botley School, Oxford [ YEAR

2017 ]

After successfully designing a modular system to be used as various functions, this brief was introduced to apply the modular system as a canteen space for children. The idea of the shutters were duplicated and developed into timber panels that create lovely shadows into the building. Light was one of the most under-developed part of the existing canteen so it was essential to consider many ways light can come in.

RESEARCH

Location | Lye Valley, Oxford [ YEAR

2018 ]

The brief was based on the study of a material to be placed as part of a design proposal. The initial design brief is connected to theraputic architecture and the materials purpose is to act as a 1:1 scale solution. I chose to work with Fabric bandages and plaster to create where one can go to clear their mind whilst embracing the atmosphere of nature, sky light, water and fabric bandage plaster walls.

14 |

The fabric bandage walls were intended to be touched and felt by the people who use the space. The combination of the plaster and bandage creates these lovely textures. This image shows an Interior view of pod with the proposed distorted fabric walls. When light is reflected onto the bandages the texture of the plaster are revealed.

The material I studied was plaster and fabric bandages. In order to develop my fabric bandage walls , it was essential to understand the materials potential to be used in various scales. The wire mesh as well as a timber frame behind, allowed a structural element to the design. The bandage walls also left the surface of the fabric to be touched.

PAVILION

Location | Lye Valley, Oxford [ YEAR

2018 ]

The brief required a design inspired by maggie centers which specialise in accomodating people who suffer from cancer. My design development was inspired by Frank Gehry in terms of form and shape. The primary colours are used as a form of healing by the intention of changing an individuals mood and creating a peaceful but playful atmosphere.

18 |

'MAGGIE CENTRE HONG KONG'

“People with cancer need places like this"

| 19

The garden space was the most significant because it opens a world of colour. Where someone who is dealing with an illness such as cancer are able to cope, embrace the nature surrounding as well as having areas in which to sit , read and heal.

HONG KONG MAGGIE CENTRE [ YEAR

2018 ]

In relation to the contemporary pavilion project, the purpose was to study an existing maggie centre and create a diorama or a particular space in the building. I was assigned to the Hong Kong Maggie centre and I chose to layer together images from the centre in order to re-create the space and attempt the same atmosphere. Concentrating on where light comes in and also areas in which you can look in to see what happens in the space.

CHAPTER FOUR

Concept interior view of shelving

32 |

I was provided with an office space intended for a masculine theme. I was asked to find accesories that can be used in the office. I looked at suppliers such as katherine pooley , artemest, lux deco e.t.c. I chose to go with gold, black and cream theme. Lastly I presented a photoshop visual that shows how they might look on the shelving provided.

In this project , the Client requested a fire place with metal panels. I worked on the elevations to show the client a play around of metal panelling in a vague way and this was the outcome.
