Ethos and Values
Ethos and Values At Lomond School we believe passionately that education should be about supporting our pupils to develop and grow both academically and personally. We uphold this commitment with six Guiding Principles, which are delivered throughout our curriculum and co-curriculum. Our overall aim is that our young people mature into rounded individuals with strong values, who are ultimately prepared to embark confidently and successfully on their life beyond Lomond School.
“Our Ethos and Values are a reflection of the school that we aspire to be and are the foundation of every decision made within Lomond School.”
Mrs. Johanna Urquhart, Principal
Our pupils learn to be global citizens and appreciate cultural diversity.
Guiding Principles
Adventure We offer a rich programme of events and activities which fosters a spirit for adventure and provides opportunities for our pupils to discover that they are capable of achieving amazing things.
Lifelong Learning
We encourage a love of learning and build the skills to help pupils realise the benefits of continued selfimprovement and development.
Environmentalism
Service Our pupils discover how they can make a positive change to the world in which we live, both in the local community and further afield.
Internationalism
Leadership We deliver many opportunities and experiences to develop strong leadership skills and help our pupils to realise that true leadership is about personal responsibility, compassion and integrity.
We have a strong commitment to outdoor learning throughout the school and we teach our children to appreciate and respect their natural environment.
Daniel L, Senior 6
“Our trip to Slovenia was an amazing experience. We got to meet and work with local people and learn about the country and their culture, as well as helping towards the preservation of the vast forestry there. The work has given me a much better appreciation of the efforts needed to maintain these ecosystems and how important they our to the environment.”
Values At Lomond School we believe that being happy in school is the key to every young person’s success. Now more than ever it is essential to ensure that our pupils are thriving, not only in their academic work but in their happiness and wellbeing. Through our values we aim to engender happiness by helping our pupils to build positive self-worth, and to nurture and develop qualities that will see them develop and grow into well rounded individuals with a positive outlook on life.
Our pupils understand the correlation between hard work, determination, commitment and reward. They demonstrate these qualities in both their academic and personal lives and they continue to persevere in the face of challenge or adversity.
Our pupils take responsibility for their own actions with respect to themselves, their interactions with the school and the wider community and the local and global environment. They are encouraged to take on areas of responsibility and leadership opportunities throughout their school career. Our young people act with integrity and understand the importance of making balanced, reasoned and ethical decisions throughout their lives.
In addition, our young people understand the importance of honouring the commitments they have made.
We teach our pupils the importance of having an inquisitive and enquiring mind. They enjoy using critical and creative thinking when examining complex problems and can work both independently and within teams. As a result, our young people develop a love of learning which continues throughout their lives.
Integrity
Determination
Values Curiosity
Our pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves to step beyond their comfort zone and be all that they can be. They understand that the greatest rewards do not come from taking the safe or easy route. With support they understand that challenge or failure is not something to be afraid of - it is an opportunity from which to learn and grow.
Compassion
Our pupils understand the importance of empathy, compassion, tolerance and respect. They value the importance of understanding other people, other cultures and the natural environment. They are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others and the world around them.
Self-Awareness
Our pupils reflect on their strengths and weaknesses in order to continue to grow and develop as individuals both academically and personally. They learn from their own experiences, actions and mistakes and from those of other people and society in general.
Courage
Within the Junior School a dedicated programme for outdoor and active learning exists to ensure that our guiding principles and values are fully embedded into the curriculum right from the start. The programme involves around 40 external partners from across the community and activities range from the introduction of first aid and survival techniques to cookery, archery and the exploration of a range of environments including forests, islands and beaches. As our young people grow and become senior pupils, these principles and values are nurtured with opportunities for trips and excursions, lessons in inquiry learning and a specific focus in the curriculum on adventure and service.
Embedding our Ethos and Values
“Beyond academics, Lomond has helped me to gain new skills which have prepared me for life after school. I am regularly pushed out of my comfort zone and this has given me the confidence to try new things and take risks.”
Sophie, School Captain
