Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion by Sharon Apfelbaum Holding a prominent position downtown since 1960, the former Santa Fe Federal Savings and Loan is taking on a new purpose. Recently Palm Springs Art Museum purchased the iconic Midcentury Modern bank with the intention of transforming it into an off-site research/ exhibition center for architecture and design. In its new incarnation the building will be called the Edwards Harris Center for Architecture and Design. The Class-I historic site, designed by E. Stuart Williams, will be one of the country’s few stand-alone architecture and design spaces and the first to be housed in a modern building. At ground level the structure is a glass pavilion, reflecting the bold horizontality of the International architectural style. It will showcase exhibitions, serve as archival study space, house curatorial offices and a retail space. The lower level, totaling over 13,000 square feet, contains a vault, meeting and storage space, a kitchen and restrooms. Los Angeles architect Leo Marmol, 4 DESERT ART•SCENE
whose Marmol & Radziner Architects is overseeing restoration, expects the building to open in fall 2013, in conjunction with the museum’s 75th anniversary. The firm also has restored two of Palm Springs’ most significant homes: Richard Neutra’s Kauffman House and Ship of the Desert, built in 1936. The Edwards Harris Trust provided some of the funding, and more than 30 founders have pledged support. A few blocks north another Class I Historic site, the Welwood Murray Memorial Library, designed by John Porter Clark in the Spanish Colonial style in the 1930s, is being reconfigured inside. Upon completion next summer it will be the home of Palm Springs Historical Society and its extensive archives and used as a library devoted to historical research. From Marilyn Monroe’s towering statue to its most sophisticated art and architecture, Palm Springs is proving its diversity on every downtown corner. Visit www.psmuseum.org for more info.

New Installation “CROWDS AND POWER” Palm Springs Art Museum Now Open – Upper Level Chase Wing
Photo by Lani Garfield, courtesy Palm Springs Art Museum
Crowds are transformative by their very nature. The ebb and flow of crowd dynamics can produce responses of wonder and fear. Crowds can be elegant in their self-regulation, compelling in their vastness, and daunting in their disarray. Their physical shapes are ever changing, whether they pulse with spontaneity or throb with the fervor of hunger or politics. Some crowds
are anticipated and are an essential a part of everyday life, or emerge from the order of bureaucracy. Then, just as quickly as a crowd might form, it can also dissolve. The shape of a crowd reflects the specificity of a historical moment, the character of a culture, and the structure of social life. These photographs document the power of the masses, from streams of refugees to waves of political rallies in the former Soviet Union and Algeria. Images depicting the sheer density of everyday life-from shoppers in an Uzbek market to star-crossed fans in Great Britain-are emblematic of the diversity, beauty, and potency inherent in crowds. “BOB HOPE An American Treasure” Exhibition Opens at the Palm Springs Air Museum
Bob Hope was a longtime resident of Palm Springs and his name graced the area’s PGA TOUR event for 47 years. So it is fitting that the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum’s traveling exhibition “Bob Hope: An American Treasure” will be making its next stop at the Palm Springs Air Museum, opening to the public on Dec. 12. The exhibit will be on display through early April 2013, so fans of both the PGA TOUR’s Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation and the LPGA’s Kraft Nabisco Championship can view the exhibition. “Bob Hope: An American Treasure” will feature many artifacts from his time in Palm Springs, including the famed golf cart shaped like Hope’s face. It displays more than 160 artifacts in total, including Hope’s Congressional Gold Medal, honorary Oscar statuette, Honorary Veterans citation, and PGA of America money clip. More than 200 vintage photos and seven video displays tell the story about Hope’s early years as part of an immigrant family in the early 20th century, his rise as a star of stage, screen and radio, the rela34 DESERT ART•SCENE
tionships he had with U.S. presidents, his devotion to the U.S. military and his love of golf. “The Palm Springs Air Museum is thrilled to have this exhibit on display, surrounded by our wonderful Warbirds,” said Fred Bell, Executive Director of the Palm Springs Air Museum. “We’re looking forward to continuing, educating and expanding Bob Hope’s legacy to area tourists and residents.” “It was a major priority for us to display this exhibition in Palm Springs,” said Jack Peter, Chief Operating Officer of the World Golf Hall of Fame. “Bob Hope is synonymous with the area, and golf fans around the world know Palm Springs because of his incredible support of the golf tournament. It is an ideal place for the exhibition and we are thankful to the Bob & Dolores Hope Charitable Foundation for its support in bringing it here.” For more information on visiting the exhibit at the Palm Springs Air Museum located at 745 N. A Thrilling Intersection of Architecture, Design, Culture & Retro Fun
February 14 – 24, 2013 OVER 100 EVENTS
In eight short years, Modernism Week has evolved from a small town celebration to an internationally-acclaimed cultural celebration that draws over 35,000 modernism enthusiasts from around the world. Likewise Modernism Week’s focus has evolved beyond cool mid-century modern architecture to include over 100 events featuring modernist design, fashion, film, music, classic cars, and vintage travel trailers. In 2013, Modernism Week’s fun schedule of events will also expand on its PreFab Showcase that debuted in 2012 with overwhelming success. Look for the PreFab Showcase to feature several prefab structures and incorporate a Modern Living Expo with a variety of exhibitors and demonstrations of smart design and sustainable modern living solutions. Among some of the 2013 Modernism Week highlights to watch for are: Illuminated Modern Official Opening and Reception -- Thursday, February 14, 2013 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Join us for the official opening
ceremony and reception for Modernism Week and celebrate the first night of Illuminated Modern. This event showcases significant midcentury modern buildings, located along Palm Canyon Drive, that are specially illuminated for the entire 11 nights of Modernism Week. Double Decker Architecture Bus Tours -- Offered twice daily – the 2 or 3 hour open-air (it’s Palm Springs!) double decker bus tours are lead by a knowledgeable guide and offers a fascinating overview of Palm Springs’ world-famous mid-century modern architecture, some of the town’s notable architects, as well as an entertaining history of Palm Springs’ Hollywood pedigree and many celebrities who made this their homes here. This is just a small snapshot -there are many more enticing events that will offer you a fun-filled and memorable Modernism Week experience.
