California Dreamin’: Thirty Years of Collecting Palm Springs Art Museum - Annenberg Wing March 6, 2014 thru June 15, 2014
Nathan Oliveira, Untitled Standing Figure 1, 1989, oil and vine charcoal on canvas, museum purchase with funds provided by the Contemporary Art Council, 1990, and the General Acquisition Fund
California
Dreamin’: Thirty Years of Collecting includes art works purchased by the Palm Springs Art Museum with funds provided by the Contemporary Art Council and other contributors from 1984 through 2012. The acquisitions were created by contemporary artists who worked in California or were influenced by spending some time in California during their artistic careers. The artworks are multifaceted, including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, ceramics, and photography, This is the first time these artworks have been on exhibition together. As well as a celebration of the commitment of the Contemporary Art Council to growing the museum’s collection of significant contemporary artists, this exhibition is a survey of art in California since the 1980s. By this time it was recognized that New York was no longer the art capital it had once been. Important, cutting edge art movements were emerging from around the country throughout, in California perhaps more than anywhere else.
Several art movements significant to California and to the history of art are represented, including San Francisco Bay Area Figurative (such as Nathan Oliveira and Christopher Brown); Funk Art (William Wiley, Robert Arneson, Roy De Forest) assemblage (Lynn Foulkes and Michael McMillen); Light and Space (Helen Pashgian and Jim Isermann); Hard Edge/Geometric Abstraction (Ed Ruscha, Ronald Davis); Latino (Enrique Chagoya Rupert Garcia and Enrique Martinez Celaya); and others (Mark Bradford, David Hockney, Anselm Kiefer, Robert Therrien, Peter Voulkos, Peter Shelton and more). This exhibition is organized by Palm Springs Art Museum and funded in part by the Contemporary Art Council and its Gold Sponsor Beth and Fred Karren. Additional support is provided by Jessica and Gary Grace. Exhibition Season Sponsors: Joan Dale and R.D. Hubbard, Dorothy and Harold J. Meyerman, Annette and Ted Lerner, JoAnn McGrath, and Deborah and Kenneth Novack.
