LIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS & PRIORITY BOOKING
WELCOME So you might notice we're making some subtle (or not-so-subtle) changes around these parts. What do you reckon? We're pretty pleased with where it's going, for sure. From this month on we'll be asking a different blog to take over our 'On The Stereo' section. This month we're excited to welcome one of our favourite sites and its stellar recommendations GoldFlakePaint. Read this online and you can click straight through to hear the tracks they're talking about. As always, August has maybe a slight lull for gigs, but July really delivered the goods with a whole host of bands doing intimate festival warm-up shows (most noteably Yeah Yeah Yeahs playing Islington Academy). It really delivered the sun too, huh? Gin, BBQ and sunglasses have been the name of the game, and what a fun game that is. Ciao

GAPS
OCEAAN
This Brighton duo are my favourite new band of the year. Their music is just so enchanting, housing folk-based melodies inside organic electronica. There is a beautiful subtle sway to every one of their songs, but also a spooky dark side that is always just out of reach. ‘Keep You’ is their debut single and is another wonderfully crafted pop gem. It's out via Sexbeat this month.
Is 'Oliver Caen' the UK's answer to How To Dress Well? Quite possibly. Marrying Tom Krell's dancefloor sensibilities with sublime vocal hooks, this track from the Manchester producer is a gorgeous RnB-tinged ballad that will win as many hearts as it breaks. Beautifully restrained beats provide the base for the smoothest vocals you'll hear all Summer. Can't wait to see where he goes next.
ALL THE DAYS ARE NOW

NEED U
HOCKEYSMITH NOW I WANT TO
Apparently two sisters who live together in caravan in Cornwall, the duo mark their return with a jaw-dropping track. The first half almost creeps by, before the track bursts into life in a mesmerising swirl of weightless vocals, weird instrumentation and the kind of darkening tension that makes your skin crawl. Sublime.
JUNGLE DROPS
Where did Jungle come from? In the space of two songs they've forced themselves to the forefront of new British talent. Lead track Platoon was a great intro but Drops threeminutes of soft, aching soul is stupidly good. Best (only?) use of a door-creek sample you'll ever hear too.
GLASS GANG WAVES
This is one of those debut singles that stops you in your tracks. The intro is Mogwai's Les Revenants soundtrack with added drum machine, before a growling wall of shoegaze guitar noise enters and never leaves, the brooding vocals soar and the whole thing comes together just beautifully.

“PEOPLE THESE DAYS SEEM TO WANT THESE STARS WHO BILL THEMSELVES AS THESE UNTOUCHABLE ICONS”
M O N E Y Words: Al Horner
“Humanity is the arsehole of the universe,” shrugs Jamie Lee. “We creates a god who’s immortal because we don’t want to die. We create a god who’s everywhere because we don’t want to be lonely.” He pauses, catching himself, then laughs. “Yeah, I suppose you could say I have a problem with religion.” The Mancunian, frontman to Bella Union newcomers M O N E Y, is explaining some of the existential hand-wringing that makes his band’s debut album, ‘The Shadow of Heaven’, one of the most compelling listens of the year so far. Pitting sounds mined from the swampy shallows of Manchester’s musical heritage – notably, the grit of Joy Division – against celestial vocals and churchly echoes, it’s a record adrift between sin and spirituality. “Good, bad,” he continues nonchalantly, “everyone ends up in the same place.” M O N E Y’s stirring brand of choral indie falls into the former category, make no mistake about it. Newly signed to Bella Union, the quartet – also featuring Charlie Cocksedge, Scott Beaman
and Billy Byron – have amassed an impressive cult following in their two years together, among them Inception actor Cillian Murphy, who directed the video to their recent single, ‘Hold Me Forever’. Somehow, a group who till now have largely neglected traditional venues for art spaces and churches – whose songs, recorded in a disused porn soundtrack studio, wrestle violently with ideas of nihilism and whose online presence is limited to obscure quasi-religious symbology on a hard-to-find Tumblr page – are gaining a reputation as one of the most vital rising acts in Britain today. “In a way, it’s just pop,” says Lee. “The ethereal church sounds we use, people say remind them of hymns, which are like the great ancestor of the pop song. They’re powerfully catchy and heard in congregation – back then in church, nowadays on the radio.” M O N E Y, however, aren't chasing Radio 1 A-lister stardom, Lee insists. “That's not us. People these days seem to want these stars who bill themselves as these
untouchable icons. Like Kanye West. That guy is on some super human mission to mythologise every single thing he does.” M O N E Y aren't here to make a spectacle of themselves, he says – even if their last release, 7” single 'Who's Gonna Love You Now?', featured a naked Lee on the cover. “I sometimes like to do things to see how people react. Now, if my girlfriend breaks up with me and her next boyfriend wants to know how big my dick is, he can just Google it.” After an acclaimed appearance at last month's Manchester International Festival, the group soon release 'The Shadow of Heaven' – but Lee is already looking ahead to writing its follow-up. “It's that insecurity, isn't it?” he blames. “Whether you're in a band or working in finance, no matter how well you're doing, you're always wondering what's next.” Whatever's next for M O N E Y, on this album and beyond, we'll be watching. ----------------------The Shadow of Heaven // August 26th // Bella Union 11
It’s easy, living here, to pass through the streets of London, blasé as hell, barely noticing the people and places around us. The solution, it seems, is to start a band, come to London and spend some time in traffic, gazing out of car windows. Even if what you see is just a seemingly infinite variety of fried chicken. Lanterns On The Lake’s Hazel Wilde tells the tale... We are on our way to a gig in the van and at a snail’s pace we crawl through the city traffic. As a child, I’d always imagined London to be a fast moving, buzzing city but today it feels sluggish and it takes forever to move a few yards forward. We’ve been here a handful of times before but we are still always childishly impressed when one of us spots a famous landmark that we’ve seen on TV. Silhouettes of imposing towers tickle the grey clouds above them. It’s impressive. We usually like to play a London game of counting fried chicken shops that we pass but we always lose count or lose interest; today it was the latter. Fascinatingly, everyone always seems to be travelling with purpose in London; I don’t see anyone just ‘out for a stroll’ and people anxiously beep their horns, hopeful that it will make the traffic suddenly kick into gear and move forward. People on foot pass us with their heads bowed down, talking on their phones; presumably they are making important calls about stock markets or some such alien concept. The lights ahead change to green but we’re still hardly moving, like the traffic is stuck in some invisible mud. We’ll probably be late for soundcheck and this always makes me restless. In the passenger seat, I wind my window down and hear a car nearby blasting the radio; the presenter is talking about being on holiday and his co-presenter laughs with intensity at everything he says. It isn’t helping my gig nerves one bit. I rest my head on my arm on the window frame and in the back of the van the fried chicken shop game has re-started “Euro Chicken, Sam’s Chicken, Perfect Chicken, Chicken Cottages”.
Until The Colours Run is released 9th September on Bella Union. The band play Islington Assembly Hall 22nd October.

“Only the two of us could come up with these songs together”
NO AGE
A lot has changed since No Age released ‘Weirdo Rippers’ in 2007 but one constant has been the idea that they’re a band pushing themselves to uncomfortable places to create music that’s both visceral and challenging. With new album ‘An Object’ the duo have shown they’re perfecting their fuzzy cocktail of experimentation married with blistering guitars, pop sensibilities and a DIY mentality. And the two-piece drench their fans with this same enthusiasm. Danny Wright spoke to the band on everything from the new album, how they’ve changed as a band and an unlikely new Wings direction. How pleased are you with album? I’m really psyched. It was a kind of difficult record to make but we kept hacking away getting down to the bones of what we wanted to say without going through the motions. You’ve been away awhile since ‘Everything In Between’ – did you need that time to think what kind of album you wanted to make? Touring took its toll a little bit towards the end – we were a little burnt out. We’d had something out every year up until Everything In Between so we took a second to have a deep breath and then jumped back in. Do you have a song on the record that means the most to you? The one that really stands out for me is ‘An Impression’. I mean I don’t know if it’s the one I get the biggest thrill from but just from a creative standpoint it was a challenge just to get to that point where we had the song. We looked at it from a few different directions. I broke the chords up and created a different melody. I’m really pleased with how it came out.
When it’s just the two of you how easy is it to do that – to look at things in different ways? It’s always been the two of us writing so either of us can come up with an idea, but mine and Dean’s thoughts and creative influences meet in this very unique place called No Age. Only the two of us could come up with these songs together. Was the idea for ‘An Object’ there from the start or did that come as you were making the album? There was a germ of the idea coming from Dean to conceptualise the manufacturing from start to finish of the entire product, including the cover and down to the smallest detail. Before he could even write lyrics or think about music in any way he wanted to make something from nothing, not in an abstract form, in a quite literal sense. He wanted it to have a hands on feel. And once we had that idea for the album he was able to start working on the things that made up the album so when it came to 15
naming it that was the title which made sense. And you and a few other people have been putting it together yourself? Yeah. There are 5,000 LP packages and 5,000 CD packages and there was us and some friends and girlfriends and mums and brothers and everyone got involved. They’re all handstamped and we wrote notes on the inside of the covers. There are some really unique things in there. I wrote my phone number in one of the packages, I think, so we’ll see if anyone calls me. If I get any prank phone calls I’ll know why. That seems something the band do – giving something tangible back to the fans. It just feels honest. Putting yourself on the road every night 6 months in row can wear you out and you wanna know that it means something to somebody out there.
“hanging out late at bars and trying to get laid was More of a distraction than an inspiration” How have the new songs been coming out when you’ve been playing live? These last run of shows we’ve played half of the new album and the new songs don’t sound the way
they do on record. We’ve sort of re-imagined them, a kind of minimalist cover of these songs. I like that we’re not being so precious with the songs. I think with ‘Everything In Between’ we really attempted to play the songs live the way they were recorded. But for these shows we wanna find a way to fuck the songs up and re-imagine them. It’s more fun for the fans that way. And finally, has getting married and moving house impacted on how you make music? It’s not necessarily impacted on the music – I think if anything it makes me want to play more because I feel like I have more time now to make music now. I think hanging out late at bars and trying to get laid was more of a distraction than an inspiration. It took a lot of time and energy just to do that. Being married and having my own space makes me more comfortable and confident playing music. We have a piano in the house which I’ve never had before so I’m trying to learn the Star Wars theme and old Paul McCartney Wings songs on piano. So that could be the next album? Yeah, you never know.
An Object is released on SubPop August 20th catch No Age at KOKO October 2nd

PURE BATHING CULTURE MOON TIDES
Memphis Industries // August 19th Portland has a funny way of churning out bands that go somewhat quietly about their business and yet produce music that deserves attention. Daniel Hindman and Sarah Versprille, who make-up Pure Bathing Culture, are
certainly another. ‘Moon Tides’, their full-length debut, is a floating, dream of synth-pop journey that echoes Fleetwood Mac but diluted with wonderfully watery layers. Helixes of vibrato-heavy guitar lines are their most potent weapon; indeed they welcome us in, as the stand-out ‘Pendulum’ dips a toe in the cool water that is this record. There is something gently inspiring about the sound they have honed, like a hopeful prophecy tracks like ‘Seven 2 One’ and the blissful highlight ‘Evergreener’ signal a happiness to come. Hindman’s cool, sugared tones
WASHED OUT PARACOSM
soar effortlessly above proceedings, harking to a more tie-died era that surely inspires the duo. ‘Scotty’ is a late-night, smooth operator of a track that slows the pace, turns down the lights and soundtracks a romantic evening in. They don’t tend to stray far from the formula they have settled with, by why should they? PBC have produced a record that feels like meeting up with an old friend and nothing has changed – it’s as accessible as it is enjoyable; you’ll go back to it and feel immediately at ease with the world. George O’Brien
Weird World // August 12th Clearly harshed out by critics that knocked his languid debut 'Within And Without' for floating in one ear and out the other rather too readily, Ernest Greene has hit back with an album of start to finish club bangers, influenced mostly by chart-topping dance trio Swedish House Mafia. Alright, you got us. 'Paracosm' is more of the same: an immaculately-produced set of elevator-ready chillwave snoozers for those who prefer their haircuts asymmetrical and their Starbucks to come with extra foam. But don't feel bad, Washed Out is so slick that criticism slides right off him without leaving any hard feelings. Tom Edwards 20
DIANA PERPETUAL SURRENDER
Jagjaguwar // August 19th Montreal and Portland have dominated North American indie for God knows how long, but Toronto is gradually creeping up on the rails with epic pop-rock four-piece, DIANA, the city’s latest exported gem. From the roller rink funk of ‘That Feeling’, all swaggering synths and flitting arpeggios, to ‘Foreign Installations’s maelstrom of gaudy cymbals, clacking snare and Carmen Elle's sweeping pitch-altered caws; ‘Perpetual Surrender’, screams 80s chic throughout. Peppered with gently tousled sax and obtuse guitar solos, each of these eight earwormy odes to love and loss could find a home on Chairlift’s nostalgia-bending opus, ‘Something’. Splendidly silky stuff. Dan Carson
MODERAT MODERAT II
Monkey Town // August 5th Producer trio Moderat make music for musicians. Their second record, ‘Moderat II’, is peppered with some classic deep house beats in tracks like 'Versions' and 'Milk' that are easy to fall in love with - they're beats that will carry you from the warehouse to your bedroom at a difficult 4am. The tracks with more vocal melody like 'Damage Done' and single 'Bad Kingdom' are fine, but it gets really interesting in the more intricate flourishes of the second half. This record has an abundance of ideas that rarely reach revelation. It’s food for thought. Bronya Francis
DODOS CARRIER
Polyvinyl Records // August 27th ‘Carrier' is an album which reveals itself slowly and powerfully. What distinguishes it from previous efforts is their more considered and engaging rhythms, further evolution in dynamic use of acoustic and electric instruments and a stronger presence of their unique ewe-influenced percussive style which becomes more prominent as the album unfolds. ‘Substance’ is a favourite track with its unexpected but thoroughly welcome trumpet bridge and powerful syncopations, as well as lead single ‘Confidence’ for its subtle, though powerfully effective wonky guitar line. It’s a step forward and The Dodos’ best release yet as they continue to refine and redefine their distinctive style. Sam Hurst 21
CROCODILES CRIMES OF PASSION
Zoo Music // August 19th ‘Crimes of Passion’ is a garish, glammy, shimmering, confetti cannon. Brash and loud, Crocodiles create instantly loveable guitar music with a depth of cultural nods and nostalgic musical touchstones to keep things rich and engaging. There’s the allusion on ’Marquis De Sade’ to the saucy French aristocrat of the same name; another track in honour of Jean Genet’s censored 1950′s film ‘A Song Of Love’. This album, as it goes, is quite a seductive listen too. Who can resist endless, indulgent layers of melody upon tumbling melody, and bittersweet vocals, when they’re dished up so effortlessly? El Hunt
SHIGETO NO BETTER TIME THAN NOW
Ghostly // August 19th Using an array of found sounds, Zach Saginaw’s third Shigeto LP feels like a window into his life. Without words to communicate, he turns to the world around him, and this personal level dominates, with it deep rooted in, or mirroring emotion. But as the album continues, that emotion declines, like someone trailing off when making a point. Beat laden, twinkling 'Detroit Part 1' is so full of tension and perfectly paced, but the record fails to develop, and even the realm of ridiculous lounge jazz stylings on ‘Miss U’ can’t help this be the album it initially promised. Nate Rockwell
BRAIDS FLOURISH
Full Time Hoby // August 19th Braids create the kind of music that doesn’t demand but, rather, requires your attention: Delicate and layered with the most intricate of details whilst immersed in Raphaelle Standell-Preston’s captivating vocal. Possibly boasting greater resemblance to Preston’s side project, Blue-Hawaii, than any previous Braids material, its influences are worldwide (though with definite Nordic leanings) and produce a beautifully and painstakingly crafted album. Full of atmosphere, they’re at their best when delving into the richer and heavier side of the electronic edge with which the majority of tracks here are laced. First single, ‘Amends’, flaunts this to especially great effect. Jess Partridge 22

THE GOOD GIG PUB GUIDE TO...
HIGHBURY & ISLINGTON “Does anyone know a good pub to meet in around..?” It’s the question you see time and time again, but we’re here answer it; We've done the research, we care, we’re here to help with a new area every month:
THE LAMB Boasting ‘beer and liquor’ on your signage is a pretty sure way to get us interested in visiting any pub and, yep, The Lamb provides both these in abundance and with high taste-levels the produce of several of our favourite London brewers is served here. Once enticed, and immediately comfortable in the laid-back atmosphere, there’s plenty here to keep you coming back. The place is soundtracked by the staff’s own pretty sweet taste in music, and if you’re hungry, the pizza place over the road delivers straight to your table. At just 5 minutes from The Garage and The Buffalo Bar, this is, easily, the first choice pre-gig pub in the area. Key gigs in the area this month: The Garage: The Thermals // Beach Fossils Buffalo Bar: Something + Ides + King Of Cats

GIN CUP by Lauren Down
LOOKING GLASS COCKTAIL CLUB The lesser known Lewis Carroll novel this is not, but an elegant cocktail bar, that's a different story. From the far-too-drinkable house Fizz, to the wonderful vintage inspired Tea Cup Cocktails, this is a place of cardamom sugar cubes, pear cognac and homemade sherbet. Our favourites find themselves rooted in Gin Mare, Hendricks and their own Rosemary blend. This ornate space is hiding some talented mixologists behind its bar, and through a giant looking glass, it's hiding so much more. Looking Glass Cocktail Club // 49 Hackney Rd // @LookingGlassE2

KE$HA
O2 Academy Brixton // July 15th More likely to be writhing chaotically over, rather than blurring, the line between the sublime and the ridiculous, Ke$ha is a pop phenomenon with purpose. Unlike Katy Perry's coquettish girl-next-door routine, Ke$ha is so thunderously bawdy and preposterous she can come over as slightly intimidating at first contact. Ultimately, it's what makes her a cut above the rest, though: that unabashed pursuit of a good time for herself and her fans is so pure and goodhearted it's impossible not to be swept up by it. Throwing herself into a set unblighted by ballads, opener 'Warrior' is as fierce a battle cry for her message of inclusion via abandon as could be hoped. 46
Her best song, undervalued recent single 'C'mon', comes bursting with killer couplets (“We've been keeping it kosher/But I wanna get it on fo' sure) and an irresistible chorus hook. Though the most disposable-sounding on record, it's the pure electro numbers that pack the biggest punch here, with 'Blow' testing the foundations with its crunching bassline. In between the hits, there's costume changes galore, angle-grinding, inflatables and more glitter than you can shake a stick at. But after the confetti settles, it's that elusive ability to be genuine without ever slipping into mawkishness and silly but always self-knowing that makes Ke$ha the most undervalued pop act of the moment. Tom Edwards
ADVANCE BASE
PISSED JEANS
It’s hard not to be a little bit in love with Owen Ashworth; with his self depreciating humour and a back catalogue over-run with heartbreak, he definitely holds more hearts than most. This is the first time he's toured the UK as Advance Base rather than former project Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and he arrives comfortable and confident on stage. The material is less rudimental and more refined than his previous moniker and it makes for a captivating show, with the audience hanging on to his every word - an oddly disproportionate amount of which are about Christmas.
Had Pissed Jeans frontman Matt Kosloff no more than an iPod backing him, he'd have zero problem filling the stage. Perpetually torn between aggressive shirt-tearing and sneering self-flagellation, his boy next door gone berserk shtick is levied with singular deftness. Behind him, the band summon a perfect storm of cranium-pulverizing noise rock so loud it's tough to properly process. It matters little. This is such a persuasive lurch back to the Sub Pop's golden era of wanton harshness, it's darn near impossible to object

NO SLEEP TILL LONDON... BY LUCY DEARLOVE I was in Berlin a couple of weeks ago and listened to an impeccably trainer-ed German guy bemoan the fact that, when he went to Dimensions last year (a Croatian festival with British organisers), there were no after-parties when the main acts finished at 6am. He was, he maintained, just getting started at that point. As a rule, Berliners stay out late. There's a plethora of Berlin bars dishing out beers and beats post 7am. Techno is still the name of the game in that fair city, and these two facts must be connected. When DJs in London play a set, they're often only having to sustain a party sort of mood for four or five hours before close. Unless you specifically seek out a minimal sort of night, you're likely to be met with a set of, well, bangers, whatever you happen to be into. Whereas in Berlin, the old clichĂŠ about a Berghain crowd cheering the hi hat as the first musical variation in an hour is pretty much bang on the money. But if you're out for twelve hours straight, and the DJs are having to entertain you for the duration, there's no point in either of you peaking too soon. Berlin's meant to be clubbing Mecca. But I'm a fan of peaking too soon, truth be told. One of my favourite nights in London is Soul Train, and I don't think I've ever made it past 3am, despite the Bussey Building's unusually lenient opening hours. But I'm a fan of drinking too much too quickly, and dancing too hard, and of taking each individual three minute song as a party all of its own, and letting that mood rise and sink with the intros and outros as rapidly as a heartbeat. I've a gnat-like attention span that extends to the dancefloor and I expect it to be held, DJ, or I'll be straight across to the McDonalds on Rye Lane before you can say 'late licensing'. 49
