June was a pretty party month huh? Stuffed full of excuses to get out, drink and enjoy actual real life sunshine. Which was much to our delight as we stormed the streets at Camden Crawl and Bushstock, and basked in the glow of Jon Hopkins and the scorching sun at Field Day. With all that, it makes July a slightly quieter month. Not that there isn't lots to look forward to, with our cover stars playing not one, but two gigs on their album release day. Hilariously (though not so much at the time) our Slow Club photoshoot was less sunshine blessed, but the lovely guys from Netil House and The Laundry's fantastic new cafe saved the day as we sipped coffees and showed an embarrassing amount of enthusiasm for their upcoming album (because it really is amazing). Of course July and August bring joy of their own as so many of you pack as much/as little of your lives as possible and head to fields across the country/world/universe. Iceland ATP? Latitude? Beacons? Greenman? Visions? We can't wait to see where it takes us all. @LondonInStereo

WILLIAM RYAN FRITCH

SHARON VAN ETTEN

Whilst the likes of Swans have won 'best record of the year' plaudits in earnest, and the postrocktronica of Explosions in the Sky and Eluvium's side project Inventions left critics agog, it's been hard to find many hints of the awe that Leave Me deserves. Taking drone to a place where Jim Morrison swims in clouds of smoke, Fritch manages to create something that's somehow beautiful and menacing. It's the subtle shadow-play that sets these compositions apart from almost anything else that has been jammed into DiS' inbox this year. Sean Adams

The sheer flexibility that Van Etten demonstrates throughout Are We There is its real triumph; she’s proven beyond doubt that she’s a formidable singer-songwriter in her own right, with much of the collaborative help she benefited from on Tramp stripped away. The clear standout is Your Love Is Killing Me, a six-minute simultaneous exercise in both drama and restraint; the lyrics are wildly theatrical, but delivered with such conviction - with Van Etten in constant control of her anguish - that you can’t help but be sold on them. Joe Goggins

BARDO POND

BARDO POND

†††

Bardo Pond pay tribute to Lou Reed’s passing by stretching out The Velvet Underground’s pretty little ditty into a cathartic twenty-minute psych-rock eulogy. The fucked-up noise breakdown in the middle perfectly captures the pain felt by those the dead leave behind. J.R. Moores

Deftones' Chino Moreno could probably sing the phonebook and it would still sound sexual, conjuring mythical creatures writhing in the corner of your mind's eye. ††† (or Crosses) have made one of the albums of the year that takes everything foreboding about their classic baby-maker White Pony but bedazzles it with some M83 glitter. RIDE INTO THE SUN

IGGY AZALEA FANCY

There are so many reasons to love Fancy, but best of all is the fact that no one saw it coming. After Pu$$y, Work, Bounce and Live Your Life, the Aussie rapper with a Southern drawl looked as though she'd go without a super-massive hit - despite being pitched as the next big thing for a seemingly endless amount of time. Of course, Charli XCX had different ideas and she knows a thing or two about international smash singles. THAT chorus was born and the rest is chart history. Rob Leedham

NEW SOUNDS ---------LYDIA AINSWORTH BY GEMMA SAMWAYS

When quizzed about influences, most young musicians will name-check a bewildering gaggle of artists that – nine times out of ten – bear little-to-no resemblance to their own output. So when we tell you that Toronto’s Lydia Ainsworth has the temerity to cite soundtrack composer Bernard Herrmann, Bulgarian choirs, Verdi’s Requiem and Ace of Base, you’d be forgiven for rolling your eyes. The only thing is, her extraordinary compositions lend credibility to the unusual source material. Bearing the hallmarks of her spell creating soundtracks for film and video installations, debut EP Right From Real, Pt 1 offers a bewitching mix of orchestral and electronic sounds, and seems to occupy the liminal space between sound design and pop. Fittingly, it was released via Montreal’s Arbutus Records, a label whose roster boasts Braids and Blue Hawaii – Ainsworth’s closest sonic counterparts.

Underpinned by a questioning xylophone motif, hypnagogic lead single White Shadows finds Ainsworth’s eerily diaphanous coo multi-tracked and fragmented over twinkling electronics and sighing cellos. Candle combines Owen Pallett-esque pizzicato violins with frenetic, fluttering percussion and back-masked panting, while the modulated synth-pop of Malachite brings to mind a haunted Austra, fronted by Kate Bush. Like most young artists, Ainsworth views the creative process as “a search for something beyond what the five senses can offer,” and is driven by “an instinctive urge to express what [she] could not in waking life.” Again, what sets her apart is the fact she actually succeeds. TA L E S F R O M T H E C I T Y. . . When you’re touring you see a lot of malls. I’ve seen a million H&Ms, it’s like Groundhog Day. “Fuck I’m in an H&M again, wasting my life.” But I have so many great memories of London – I will take the tube which I enjoy because I live in LA and there’s no public transport. But most of my memories are centred around the K West [a hotel in West London where many musicians stay]. It’s weird, whenever I think about it I automatically think of that place - it seems to be where everyone stays right? I’ve clocked so many hours in London over the years in various states of stability and comfort and with different bands - but the centre point is always the K West. And when you have jetlag and you’re walking down those long hallways they feel infinite. What I remember are truly long evenings and drinking far too much in the lobby there; getting yelled at by the other occupants in the hotel asking us to keep it down. I vividly remember hearing Bright Eyes’ Cassadaga for the first time in the K West – we all piled into my room and turned off the lights and listened to that record for the first time in the dark. Another highlight was the very first show we did in London for Rabbit Fur Coat with the Watson Twins – it was the most theatrical thing I’d done up to that point. I remember owhen the twins came out I could hear a gasp from the crowd, just because it was so striking looking. It just felt like something was really happening there was a palpable excitement. America is so spread out it's hard to get that but when you get to London and it clicks you can really feel the excitement.

SHABAZZ PALACES WORDS: GEOFF COWART

When the summer sun finally sinks below the horizon tonight, cast your eyes deep into the night sky to locate the Black Constellation. Situated at 47° 36' 23" N / 122° 19' 50" W – somewhere above Seattle, Washington – lies a swirling cosmic haze of space dust, beatific languid raps and sub-harmonic rumblings. The celestial sphere was formed in 2009 by the collision of the amorphous organic solids of rapper Palaceer Lazaro (Ishmael ‘Butterfly’ Butler) with the mixed aromatic–aliphatic structures of percussionist Fly Guy ‘Dai (Tendai 'Baba' Maraire). The result is the otherworldly hip hop collective of Shabazz Palaces. Returning to earth with their second album, Lese Majesty, it was conceived at the duo’s new studio Protect and Exalt Labs with contributions from THEESatisfaction’s Catherine HarrisWhite, Erik Blood and Thadillac, and delivered by Sub Pop. “It is a series of seven astral suites,” Ishmael exalts. “It’s also a war cry, born of a spell, acknowledging that sophistication and the instinctual are not at odds.” The group’s deep-space dialectical exploration challenges listeners with its maze of interwoven tropes and sonic anarchy. The album’s title, Lese Majesty, relates directly to the duo’s anti-authoritarian leanings, invoking the French legal term for the crime of high treason or violating the sovereignty of the monarch – a statute brutally enforced today in Thailand to protect the crumbling reign of 86-year-old king Bhumibol Adulyadej. “Lese Majesty has a nice sound on the tongue, doesn’t it?” asks Ishmael. “But that’s not the only reason I chose it. It’s evocative – and provocative – and its meanings can be applied to more than

“EVERY TIME I RAP, IT’S A TONGUE KISS.” just a government or a ruler. In these times, there are plenty of establishments that could do with a bit of treason.” It is three years since the duo dropped debut album Black Up and this time around it’s clear the sessions have finally captured the group’s dark matter. “That just might be true,” Ishmael says with a laugh. “After a lot of touring, we built a studio and got some nice equipment – which means the album has proper sonic continuity. Black Up was made in a very different way.” That newly-discovered sense of space and grandeur has evolved from Ishmael’s kaleidoscopic references to memory, supernatural philosophy and religious history to fuse like a binary star with Tendai’s mind-bending beats. The son of master Zimbabwean percussionist Dumisani Maraire, Tendai offers a complex network of conga, snare and cymbal hits to allow Ishmael to unleash his staccato rap attack with luscious results on Forerunner Foray: “Everytime I rap, it’s a tongue kiss.” While the ethereal is clearly a core theme for the duo, slack rappers also get their time in the firing line. On They Come in Gold, Ishmael trains his sights on some of his peers: “Sepulcher/ A stage enlived by ghosts/ Floating off with bags of the blood-encrusted dough.” Make as much – or as little – of their wild mythmaking as you like because all of the album’s eighteen tracks sparkle with intergalactic splendour. From the

slow unfolding drones of Dawn of Luxor which open the album to the degraded sonic glitches of Sonic MythMap for the Trip Back which close it, the tunes fully exploit the power of their abstract and experimental sound. “Each step of the process is an opportunity to do something artistic,” says Ishmael. This creative bent has always rewarded him, from his days in the slick-like-that rap trio Digable Planets to the basement funk of Cherrywine. “But we instinctively rally in opposition to the idea that listeners need a map to decode what we are doing,” Ishmael adds sharply, “That’s just myopic marketing bullshit. It doesn’t give the listener much credit – or opportunity.” Stunning artwork is also a crucial part of this creative mission for the group. For the cover of first single They Come in Gold, Ishmael’s lyrics are translated into

Arabic and twisted into a tricky maze on the LP sleeve by artist Nep Sidhu, who also handled the bold, tricked-out Arabic stylings on Lese Majesty’s cover. Asked how the Seattle duo came to join forces, Ishmael recalls: “Tendai and I lived near each other. We were in the same orbit as musicians for three or four years before we tried anything in the studio. One day he was over at my house and I asked him: ‘You got your bata [drum]?’ And he said ‘Yeah, it’s in my car’. It’s a really sacred instrument and he doesn’t just play it for anyone. But he brought it in and we made a song, which became Blasted from one of our early EPs. It was an auspicious beginning.” From then, the stars have been aligning nicely for Shabazz Palaces. “As they always do...,” chuckles Ishmael. Lese Majesty is released via Sub Pop July 29th

opinions nowhere is harder to find that freedom than in today's musical climate. Artistic freedom though is still a noble pursuit, and one which The Acid find themselves in search of on debut album Liminal. A collaboration between LA based singer-songwriter Ry X, Grammynominated British dance producer/DJ Adam Freeland and legendary electronic artist Steve Nalepa, Liminal is the sound of a record created for creations sake. Having retreated to the remote forests of Australia for six weeks, The Acid found a fluid and free space in which to form their smooth, THE ACID synaesthetic beats without the pressures of the outside world. Built upon an intimate dialogue LIMINAL between man and machine; Liminal is a Infectious Music // July 7th cohesive, intoxicating blend but no two tracks If personal freedom is a myth, are the same. In the tussle between organic, analogue elements and slick electronics a then so too is its artistic beautiful, rich variety emerges – one that moves counterpart. And, much like any other myth, there are those from deep bass swells of album opener Animal and the minimal clatters of aptly titled Creeper that claim it's real; dedicating their lives to convincing others to the warm, seductive pop of lead single Basic and producing proof in support Instinct and expansive, whispered flutters of of that theory. But proof can be album closer Feed. By the very nature of Liminal's freeform creation, fabricated, and truths it's easy for the listener to zone in and out of its stretched. Actual evidence, if fluctuating landscape but then it follows that a it does exist, is scarce. With record created with no real focus will, at times, big business execs breathing struggle to hold your focus: I suppose that's the down your neck with their prerogative of artistic freedom. market-tested, focus-groupapproved, radio-friendly Lauren Down

GULP // SEASON SUN Sonic Cathedral // July 14th

The cover art for Season Sun may look more like Southern California than South Wales, but the music packed into Gulp's debut LP is very much indicative of what we've come to expect from their fellow countrymen over the past two decades. Exhibiting the same psych-tinged but pop-leaning hallmarks of Super Furry Animals (of whom Guto Pryce is the bassist), but coupled instead with Lindsey Leven’s almost Cocteau Twins-esque vocals, Season Sun at times risks criticism of derivativeness but nonetheless triumphs in its humble mission statement of creating a perfectly pleasant "sunshine pop record". Luke Morgan Britton

ALVVAYS ALVVAYS

Transgressive // July 21st If ‘Weird Science’ was real and you could design your ideal C86-inspired band, the results would probably sound something like Alvvays. Hearts and reference points stitched neatly on their satchels, the Toronto-based quintet marry the jangling chords of Teenage Fanclub and sun-drenched solos of Real Estate, with Camera Obscura-esque vocal cadences and the world-weary lyrical wit of Belle & Sebastian. In fact, there are so many influences in play, the only thing that prevents their debut feeling derivative is the calibre of songwriting. If you can prise yourself away from album standout Archie, Marry Me, you’ll find plenty more to fall for, and, like all the best crushes, it’s an infatuation that only deepens with time. Gemma Samways

JUNGLE JUNGLE

XL // July 14th Jungle’s rise to ‘most exciting new band’ has been shrouded in mystery (and a very clever marketing campaign). But it’s one thing creating a viral video; it’s quite another producing a timeless album. Luckily, as the dry ice slowly fades, it’s clear that Jungle are the real deal. Their debut is at once in the past and the future – a confident blast of neo-soul-disco and hazy party vibes that shimmies, tip-toes and foot slides in just the right places. The throbbing basslines and falsetto disco vocals you’ll have heard on Busy Earnin’ and Platoon are here in abundance. They might never quite reach those heights elsewhere but, like finding the best party, once you’re in, you won’t want to come out again. Danny Wright

SIA // 1000 FORMS OF FEAR RCA // July 7th

This is, to the surprise of many, Sia's sixth studio album. Her first since David Guetta gave her career a slight boost, and it might come as a bit of a shock, but she's taken a few influences from her French collaborator. Shying away from the sugar-sweet pop of her previous album We Are Born, she focuses on the strength and style of her voice over the duration, but the musical accompaniment is far subtler than any of Guetta's dance-pop production methods. Fans drawn in by the soaring nature of lead single Chandelier will find a different animal waiting for them, and this time it isn't a Wolf. Jack McKenna

WOMAN’S HOUR CONVERSATIONS

TO ROCOCO ROT INSTRUMENT

City Slang // July 21st There are three easy reasons to snap up To Rococo Rot’s eighth album. Namely, the three tracks which feature vocals – from New York no wave pioneer Arto Lindsay, no less. Adding his unhurried singing to the band’s hypnotic groove finds the Berlin trio in a surprisingly relaxed and inspired mood. Lindsay sets the tone on opener Many Descriptions, delivering playfully: “Return asphalt to its pebble self/ Send the streets back to the beach/ Grind asphalt back to sand/ Each grain just slightly out of reach”. Elsewhere, the lilting, melodic bass riff drift of Classify recalls Tortoise at their very best, while the meandering Longest Escalator in the World polishes off the album’s sonic tomfoolery. Geoff Cowart

Secretly Canadian // July 14th Delicacy, poise and grace are the words that come to mind in connection with Woman’s Hour. Fiona Jane’s gorgeous, character-filled vocal, with its gentle Northern twang, provides the centrepiece for their subtle brand of atmospheric pop. The eleven tracks encompass painfully relatable human emotion: the loneliness of Darkest Place is heightened by its stark lyrics, while the title track provides an upbeat, foot-tapping moment but maintains the depth and melancholic subtext that runs effortlessly through the veins of the record. Their debut full-length feels like a piece of work with assurance beyond their relatively slim experience. From its progressive, sci-fi opening through the touching, beautifully serene Our Love Has No Rhythm to Two Sides Of You, with its wonderfully soft, floating chorus, Conversations is a record of utterly beguiling beauty. George O’Brien

COMET GAIN PAPERBACK GHOSTS

Fortuna Pop! // July 7th Paperback Ghosts was written whilst wandering the familiar streets of North London, and thus this is an album of memories and wistful nostalgia. With those ruminations on broken hearts, missed opportunities and tumbling decay, it captures both the melancholic yearning for yesteryear that comes from golden gatherings and the buoyant emotion this creates. Along with their trademark jangly pop, we see dashes of buzzing psych on Confessions of a Daydream and garage pop punkyness on Breaking Open The Head Part 1. The everyday mingles with the mysterious, infusing those ordinary situations with a sense of the spiritual. This is an enchanting album of “lost souls….holding on to life,” and lord knows, that speaks to us all. Francesca Baker

HONEYBLOOD HONEYBLOOD

Fat Cat // July 14th Honeyblood comprise of Shona McVicar and Stina Tweeddale, a self-assured twosome; delivering melodic indie hooks and amiable comparisons to the likes of Dum Dum Girls. Their self-titled debut album confidently plunges into opener Fall Forever, before twisting into moodier depths during Biro and No Spare Key. Working with legendary producer Peter Katis (The National, Interpol) has obviously had an impact on their poised and radio-ready sound, yet somehow it all seems a little too safe. It’s only during All Dragged Up that we really get to hear a riled-up version of the duo, but by then it’s just a little too late. Do we really need another blend-in indie band? I’ll leave that all-important decision down to you. Amy Gravelle

STRAND OF OAKS HEAL

Dead Oceans // Out Now On HEAL, his fourth full-length under the Strand of Oaks moniker, Timothy Showalter sheds the rootsy folk of his previous work and truly comes into his own. It’s a remarkable record, more or less the definition of a leap forward, with confident songwriting, that finds Showalter working his way through a variety of genres while keeping his own voice. Opening track Goshen ’97 is pure nineties indie rock (with some help from J Mascis on guitar), but throughout the record Showalter covers synth pop, Springsteenian rock, folk and power pop, all expertly crafted. The true heart of the record, however, is the mammoth seven-and-a-half-minute Jason Molina tribute JM with its Neil Young & Crazy Horse stylings. Johan Alm

YIP DECEIVER MEDALLIUS

New West Records // July 7th The past members section on the Wikipedia page for of Montreal is a veritable who’s who of upbeat pop mastery, now joined by Nicolas Dobbratz and Davey Pierce’s Yip Deceiver. From the delightfully overproduced 80s throwback Lover, to the jaunty Obnoxia and the Reggie Watts-approved Get Strict (seriously, check out the dude’s moves in the video), Medallius is track after track of falsetto-imbibed synth licks and disco drums. As the trend for gloomy post-dubstep whinery continues far longer than anyone asked for, Yip Deceiver remind us - much like their Kevin Barnes-fronted alma mater - that at its core, electronic music is still a hell of a lot of fun. SLOW CLUB words: Thomas Hannan photography: Lucy Johnston

“Yeah! I don’t see why not.” That’s Rebecca Taylor’s reply, delivered in a mock-offended manner that suggests she’d quite like to give me a slap for being so cheeky, to a question about whether she thought, back in the day, Slow Club could ever make a record that sounded like Complete Surrender. Because I certainly didn’t. The first time I saw them, nearly ten years ago at The Buffalo Bar (“supporting Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong”, remembers Rebecca, only adding emphasis), the duo had everything including the kitchen sink on stage, and played a sort of hyperactive anti-folk that made up for in charm what it lacked in professionalism. It was light-years away from Complete Surrender a big, glossy and thoroughly lovely RnB record. I’m initially taken aback, the transition from then to now being akin to discovering Jeffrey Lewis does a really convincing Barry White impression. “We still do some of the old songs like that”, says Charles Watson of their early days. “When we do, it’s like there’s built in muscle memory. We don’t even have to look at each other - it’s such a nice feeling. I really love the way Becky plays drums. It’s so expressive, and it makes me play guitar differently. I do miss having that, banging about.”

Given the limitations they placed upon themselves and the increase in sonic scope displayed on Complete Surrender, it’s not surprising to learn that even the band thought Slow Club Mk.1 had a shelf life. “Bass was never something we even considered on the first record”, continues Charles. “It was just something to fill out the sound. We slowly realised good basslines are amazing. We became a little less frantic live through playing with other people. We were just trying to do everything; Becky was playing all the drums and singing, and I was trying to do the basslines on the guitar as well as the chords. It gets to a point where you’re doing so much you’re not even enjoying it.” A reflective Rebecca picks up the point: “We know now that an album means two years of your life touring, so you have to make sure you’re going to enjoy playing it every night for fucking ages.

“I never want to be as honest and clear as I am”

We made a decision to make this one simple, direct and beautiful. I’ve never thought a record like this wouldn’t happen, but who knows what the next one will sound like? If there is a next one - I always assume I’m going to get run over soon. I’m very worried about that.”If they make another leap as large as the one just made, assuming they continue to look both ways before crossing the road, the next album could indeed be a pickle to predict. But even though their latest is a big step forward, many of its influences are unashamedly classic – perhaps a result of Charles’ tour bus listening habits. “When you’re on tour”, he explains, “there are certain songs you get so obsessed with that you listen to them over and over again. We were listening to a lot of soul, Michael Jackson and 70s pop, which informed it. But it was more the result of going with (producer) Colin Elliot. He knows how to make an album that doesn’t feel like it’s retro, just something that sounds big and glossy.” Staying on the right side of the retro/classic divide was important to the pair from the outset. Rebecca describes how “we just constantly said ‘we don’t want it to be retro, we don’t want it to be retro!’ every day. It was never going to be doo wop, neither of us wanted that. Colin’s perfect for it; he gives it a feel that’s posh, expensive and grand. That’s how I think life should be, if it can be.” Though sonically something of a revelation, lyrically Complete Surrender dwells on familiar themes of love, loss and friendship. It’s just that now, with the songs sounding as grandiose as the themes, it all seems

to fit that bit better – no matter how bracingly honest Rebecca continues to be in her songwriting. “I never want to be as honest and clear as I am”, she admits. “But it got to a point where I wasn’t writing anything else, and we had to make an album! Charles and I are very close. Neither of us are ever talking about some really niche thing the other can’t get on board with. And it’s quite obvious that the feelings I’m talking about are pretty universal. I don’t think humans are that intricate. We’re all on about the same shit. It’s not like Charles is singing about... I literally can’t think about anything other than ‘having a dick’, and asking me for help writing about that. Although, I could imagine having a dick....” One can only imagine what the video for that tune would look like. If their fantastic last pair of promo clips (the movie glamour of Complete Surrender, and Suffering You, which summarises the entire Rocky saga in three minutes) are anything to go by, they’d find a way to tackle the topic with their signature mixture of humour and elegance. Yet Rebecca starts laughing at the mere mention of videos, calming only when I ask what was behind such a drastic change in image. “Obviously, I want to be attractive and glamorous”, she admits sheepishly. “It just ties in with the feeling of the album. But image is such a hard thing to discuss when you’re in a band with boys who aren’t as bothered.” Charles admits the process of making videos is his “least favourite bit”. Yet Suffering You was different: “I felt like it was ‘us’. It’s even a bit more

“We made a decision to make this one simple, direct and beautiful

telling than maybe I thought it was at the time.” “We weren’t ourselves, we were characters”, clarifies Rebecca. “Charles is an old retired boxer, and I’m ‘RLT’ a kid off the street. The idea was that I used to be a bit of a feisty bitch, but then he helped me hone this hot headedness in to something positive – boxing! Do you get all this, these nuances in our performance? But it’s also me and Charles against the world, which is how we feel. Obviously I love all this shit. When I was a little girl I was performing all the time; singing, acting, dancing, anything. But it’s a challenge making something we’re both alright with.

The Suffering You video was my one, Charles is doing the next. Who knows what he’ll do. Maybe it’ll just be a black screen.” “That flashes a big penis,” adds Charles. That’s Slow Club, folks - doing their best to make out like they’re not the classiest band in the country even when their records suggest quite the opposite. Complete Surrender is released via Caroline July 14th Slow Club play both Rough Trade East and 100 Club July 14th, and also On Blackheath Festival September 14th.

FIELD DAY

Like anyone brought up on the indie battlefields, the natural instinct to Future Islands’ sudden and dazzling It buckets down at 11am; the fear rise to prominence is to treat them kicks in, wellies are considered, but with sniffy suspicion. I leave the then, then...the festival gods smile show disappointed, but only with and bathe us in glorious sunshine. myself. Hype justified, and then “Too hot” we say, Britishly. On site some, by a full-bloodied, James Holden defies a bafflingly early mesmerising show. And, yeah, what time slot by wowing us yet again with a frontman. We made a deal with his live workings of The Inheritors, The Pixies that their re-union had to whilst Jaakko Eino Kalevi’s mean new music. Years later we got fascinatingly odd pop marks him out the new music and swiftly wanted to as a real one-to-watch. Anytime you back out of the deal. But, it’s still hear SOHN’s The Wheel you know The Pixies, and they still have some you’re getting your day right, but it’s of the greatest songs of a generation, the always-enriching dance kicks of and the sense of anticipation is Jon Hopkins that really get a supertangible. Trouble is, Frank Black’s party crowd partying super-hard. voice is shot to pieces and all the Metronomy can do no wrong in front of raging anguish that used to drive a Field Day audience, and they get those classics is reduced to a sad everything right tonight: A greatestwhimper. Where Is My Mind still hits set that reminds us just how soars and reminds of better days, but special they are, and more it feels like time to let them retreat importantly, just how fun they are. to a quiet corner. Dave Rowlinson

Victoria Park // June 7th & 8th

GIRL BAND

Shacklewell Arms // June 11th Girl Band are over from Dublin and though relatively little of their music has made its way into our ears, this is a sell-out show. It seems their spacial rhythms and driving guitars topped by Dara Kiely's jarring vocals have resonated regardless. When they take to the stage, there's not a person in the room that's not

immediately enraptured by their meticulous, perfectly put together racket. Some of us hear LCD Soundsystem, some of us hear a double-harsh Pavement, but hell, if you’re hearing those you’re in a good place anyway. Girl Band launch into their barbed-wire assault with daring bravado and emerge bloodied and grinning, whilst Lawman’s chances of winning single-of-the year fights are quadrupled by a fearsome and thrilling run-through. Est. 1915

Re Est. 2014

BY SANDRA CROFT Let's say you had a rough year last year. Your troubles seemed to start with that Pure Bathing Culture show where you couldn't hear the vocals. Later that week, you went to see Parquet Courts in a disguise, because you didn't want any acquaintances or ex-partners to ruin your deep and communal something-or-other with Parquet Courts' music. Your acquaintances and exes end up all around you, only they don't recognise you, which is more distracting than if they did. Parquet Courts played a jaded, workmanlike show that, they later tell one of your drunk exes, they considered "too pop". You wish you hadn't demanded emotional labour from Parquet Courts. They are artists in the year 2014, not Delta stewardesses in 1971, from whom one might have purchased a flimsy intimacy. A girl approached you and told you that she liked your outfit. You were wearing a granny wig, a hairnet, a black moustache, baby blue polyester pants, and orange shoes. The girl asked if you want to manage her band, The Vagina Roaches. Indistinct blogs multiplied like gremlins, and also like gremlins, some got dumber and sassier. Their effect on old-new media was obvious: Even websites that host longform criticism began to introduce mp3 links with a mere 'like' button. So much new music and "music news" erupted each day that you began to feel like you've skipped a week of calculus class when you tried to discuss new music or music news with the other consumers/students. You started listening to Pulp a lot, even though you find them cheesily sincere, because being poor was at least part of their music. Most of the 2014 music world struck you as being "about" affluence, or at least an uncurious ease. Where is the music about being poor? You know that the 90s version of the poor aesthetic denied either the feminine (see Superchunk) or humour (see Sonic Youth), but poverty itself is a planetary human subject going weirdly unsung. You've said it before, but you trust that some new Kurt Cobain is rising somewhere, sporting hand-me-down thermal underwear, and he (or she) will reveal 2013's escapist party music about acquisitiveness as bloated, unpunk idolatry. And I hope that the new Cobain is an electronic artist, because even the most brilliant dance music only offers a fantasy of grace that barely obtains or applies in the day, or during most jobs. And I can't wait to hear, like, Sky Ferreira jump on the new Cobain's bandwagon. Everyone will be getting a treat and being swindled at the same time.
