May was a ridiculous month, huh? With the likes of The Great Escape, Field Day and Land of Kings we feel stretched out, a bit sleepy and, maybe, a little hungover too. Still, it was all good fun; so many incredible bands, old friends and reasons to dance. It was great to catch some acts we've been waiting to see for so long too, Guards in particular lifted our spirits and kept us going.
JESS KENZIE MAY HIDE & SEEK DAVE WOLF ALICE BROS
Anyway, onwards to June and we're so excited to have the awesome talent of James Holden on the cover. It's been seven long years, but his new album was definitely worth the wait. That said the Jon Hopkins album has stolen our hearts too. Both acts have really special live shows coming up to celebrate their releases. The tickets for these are gonna be golden so hold onto them tightly.

SPLASHH
TODAY (FADE AWAY) For most bands, b-sides are inferior; tracks that aren’t bad but aren’t quite good enough either. For Splashh, they’re just as good, if not better, than the a-sides. The flipside to the yearning summer daze of ‘All I Wanna Do’, ‘Today (Fade Away)’ is a surging, disheartened churn of gloomy lo-fi sonics that stands tall as one of the band’s most brilliant and stunning songs to date.
THE ORWELLS OTHER VOICES
More generous than most, The Orwells are giving you a choice on their new EP hear a rough and ready self-produced version of ‘Other Voices’ or a slicker, more polished one from the hands of Dave Sitek. Whichever you choose, the basic elements of both remain the same - thrashed out garage punk and lyrics that race through the rollercoaster ride of nights spent on a mission to get trashed. 6
JAN
WORK FOR THE CITY Formerly of LA art-rock duo Eagle and Talon, Kim Talon returns with a new base Brooklyn - and a new moniker - JAN. ‘Work For The City’, taken from her self-titled debut album, sees her adopting PJ Harvey’s subtly intelligent form to make something offbeat and essential.
BLOODY KNEES
EARS, EYES, OHS AND YOUS “I tried to know you the best that I could/But that’s no good,” rasps Bradley Griffiths on the lead track from Cambridge punks Bloody Knees’ self-titled debut EP. Chaotic, unpretentious and bags of fun, it’s a blinding first taste of a band set for infinitely bigger things.
FIST CITY
BORING KIDS On their second LP ‘It’s 1983, Grow Up’, Canadian quartet Fist City are demanding your attention. ‘Boring Kids’ is scuzzy, DIY punk at its finest, two and a bit minutes of relentless pounding topped by Kier Griffiths’ urgent, compelling hollering. The perfect antidote to soulless, insipid bands with nothing to say. 7
Melt Yourself Down are not your average band. For one thing they’re something of a supergroup, featuring member of acts as revered as Acoustic Ladyland, Zun Zun Egui and Sons of Kemet. For another, they create a frantic jazz hybrid that you don’t hear very often, a mash up of sounds that sits just as easily on 6Music as in a small jazz club in South America. When Danny Wright caught up with Pete Wareham, whose prodigious talent as a saxophonist has been showcased in Acoustic Ladyland and Polar Bear, he’s understandably excited. It was he who had the brainchild for the group – and it seems it was a rather easy sell to the band: ‘I decided to try and make some Nubian-inspired party punk music, so I called everyone and they said 'yes'.’ Of course, it makes sense. I mean who could turn down the opportunity to make Nubianinspired party punk music? Even the name sounds fun. Writing the whole record first allowed the band to hone their sound and create this brightly coloured cocktail of Afrocentric tribal pop mixed in with funk and krautrock. ‘This is the first project I've done where all the music has been written, rehearsed and recorded before any gigs so it was all a big secret and all the more exciting for it.’ And there was an almost instant feeling that this was something special. ‘There was an immediate chemistry. The first tunes we played were 'Release!' and 'Fix My Life' which I brought to the first rehearsal and we nailed them right away. It felt amazing.’
With all these incredible musicians, such as Shabaka Hutchings and Kushal Gaya, the band were able to build these bright, euphoric soundscapes. I ask if that was one of the most exciting things about the band – that it’s a melting pot of ideas? ‘Absolutely! And the instrumentation no chords - allows me to write with space and dynamics, while keeping a rhythmic propulsion. The musicians in the band have lots of experience of playing all kinds of music from all over the world so obviously those rhythmic, harmonic, melodic and dynamic elements find their way into the music.’ It’s all these ideas that make Melt Yourself Down such a thrilling proposition and even on record they manage to maintain the energy of a live band. How did they achieve this? ‘The studio - Lightship95 - was a hot and sweaty boat at Trinity Buoy Wharf which had bags of vibe so we got really into it. And we're all essentially 'live' players who hadn't gigged this yet so the anticipation and compressed energy were strong.’ Finally, I ask about their plans for the summer? After all, theirs is a sound which seems perfect for festivals. His answer is simple and unequivocal: ‘We want to play anywhere that will have us!’.
“THE ANTICIPATION AND COMPRESSED ENERGY WERE STRONG.”

London might not always be a sunny utopia where people wave politely at each other and wish strangers a good day in the street, but it takes more than a couple of bad experiences to tarnish affection for the place. Here, Austra’s Katie Stelmanis tells alarming tales of robberies, pickpockets and broken shoes but, also, an unbroken love for the city. London is one of my favourite cities of all time. I spend as much time there as I can between touring and real life. Even if I don't have any friends, just being in the city makes me happy. It’s surprising to most people that I feel this way because of the number of times I've been robbed in London, but I do. Once at Borough Market I had my wallet stolen with a load of cash in it, at the same time my shoe broke so I had to make my way back home penniless and barefoot. That was a sad day. The worst robbery we had in London was at a show we played where we checked with the staff at the venue and asked if we could leave our gear in the green room over night. They insisted it was safe, and so we left behind all our instruments, suitcases, and wealth from the tour we were just finishing. The bar closed, we left the building, DJ'd till 4am, and returned the next day to pick up all our belongings. Everything looked untouched; a sigh of relief. Until, of course, I opened my suitcase, pulled out my clothing, checked the secret inner pocket that held our touring profits and realised it had been taken. Ten thousand euros tactfully removed whilst the venue was "protecting" our belongings. None of the security tapes, police officers, booking agents, or law school students could get our money back from the thieving venue. All we can do now is tell everyone we know to NEVER enter that establishment and give them even a dollar. Despite these minor setbacks and confrontations with the dark side, my love for London remains intact.

Immersing oneself in the decades of electronic music and its accompanying theories and ideas is a daunting task beyond the pale of most aficionados. James Holden, however, has always thrived in its annuls. In new album ‘The Inheritors’, his first for seven years since the genre-bending ‘The Idiots Are Winning’, Holden has created a peerless sonic palette breathing life into its heritage as much as forging a breathtaking new ideal for a spectrum he holds so dear. Will Grant catches up with him to discuss the album’s origins and his reactions to his new organic environment. How has your mentality towards production changed in the seven years since The Idiots Are Winning? I've learnt a hell of a lot. At one point I worried I'd wasted my time it took maybe a year learning MAX/MSP’s software before I was where I wanted to be with it. But I couldn't have done it without that learning, and now have a slight feeling of having superpowers - can't wait to get back in the studio with them to be honest!
the notes I wanted. I wanted something denser and more importantly I wanted to be able to 'play' these clouds of notes in real time so that the expression is in the notes. Unlike classical music (or most electronic music) that expression was captured from a moment it really happened, it wasn't built, sculpted or planned. You've mentioned how the process of some of the production with the
“Some of the squares were really offended by ‘Gone Feral’. . Good, I didn't want them at my gigs anyway.” Was the intention behind building these new 'tools' and programmes for The Inheritors an effort to liberate yourself from a more constrictive library of synthetic, digital sounds? Not so much the sounds, as the structure; the notes themselves, the way the whole thing hangs together. Rather than write the notes I designed machines that would play
modular synths as "a fight as you control to steer them". Was that a frustrating or thrilling process? Thrilling! Any musical performance is like that - playing the piano is a fight to get my fingers in the right place at the right time, playing the violin is an eight-rounds-bout I always lose, trying to avoid squeals and scrapes.
JON HOPKINS IMMUNITY Domino // June 3rd
‘Immunity’ starts with the jangling of keys in a door, the music begins as it shuts. Fitting, as Jon’s intention was to write something immersive and hypnotic. Not in the sense of a misused adjective but in the hope of actually creating something mentally transportative.

GOLD PANDA HALF OF WHERE YOU LIVE
NOTOWN // June 10th
It's strange to think that it’s been four years since 'Quitter's Raga' entered our consciousness, but here we are with Derwin's second LP and follow-up to the addictive 'Lucky Shiner'.
His final test, to see if it was finished, was to lie on the floor of his studio, press play and see where it led his mind to roam. That might well be the best way to experience the record. The driving techno of tracks like ‘Open Eye Signal’ is offset by the intricately mesmerising softness found in between, each leaves you encompassed in the record, immune to the world outside.
It's a less direct sound than his previous effort, and shares similarities with the 'Trust' EP released earlier this year. On ‘Lucky Shiner’ there was a definite theme throughout, but on 'Half Of Where You Live' he confidently experiments and explores new methods and approaches, much to our delight. With this, the record never lets itself feel tired nor repetitive and remains truly arresting throughout.

MOUNT KIMBIE COLD SPRING FAULT LESS YOUTH Warp // Out Now
Before it even had time to breath “dubstep” became a dirty word, its commercial artificiality inherently at odds with the warmth of the more organic, less neurotic end of the genre's spectrum. Thankfully, its the latter, left-electronic-field Mount Kimbie occupy and, as with their 2010 debut, 'Cold Spring Fault Less Youth' finds them doing so with an unshakeable sense of serenity. Even within the dizzier, stranger and wonderfully unconventional confines of their new album, it permeates everything - King Krule's crooning guest vocals, the endlessly rattling percussion and sighing organ keys - leaving a bleak, hollow yet utterly enticing record in its wake. Lauren Down
SPECTRALS SOB STORY
Wichita // June 3rd
Spectrals (Louis Jones to his friends) fluttered into shot a couple of years ago boasting an array of cannily selected archival influences and a devotion to antiquity not seen since The Libertines' prime. Likeable debut 'Bad Penny' channelled those doo-wop/garage pop/Rat Pack nods with some heart, but this follow-up is but a pale facsimile of his own past efforts. Jones' confoundingly affected Edwyn Collins croon is thrust so high in the mix that it overpowers even the occasional good eggs ('Karaoke', 'Limousine'), while the torturous drabcore nadir of 'Friend Zone' is unfortunately representative of an album fundamentally devoid of inspiration. Tom Edwards
ELEANOR FRIEDBERGER PERSONAL RECORD Merge // June 4th
‘Last Summer’, the 2011 solo debut born amidst the hiatus/combustion of Fiery Furnaces, remained puzzlingly undiscovered by the record-downloading public. This follow-up, though, will hopefully gather the attention and cherishing it so richly deserves. Like that debut, a glossy FM sheen saturates throughout; colouring the tracks in fuzzy, warm hues - all sunlight glint through nostalgic eye squint. Again, though, it’s the lyric dexterity and gift for narrative which propels Friedberger skywards and away from her peers. Knowing, but never too-knowing, smart as hell but never smug; the record delights in detail, clearly personal but always inclusive, you feel like you’re right there with her and, more so, not wanting to be anywhere else. Dave Rowlinson 21
SCANNERS LOVE IS SYMMETRY
Tigertrap Records // June 10th
Scanners are a band of many talents, the varying pace and styles on this, their third album, are a perfect demonstration of this. Although almost every track contains a severe electronic backbone, they pile new and different ideas into them too. However it’s when Scanners run away with their inclined electronic tone that they really shine; the opening two tracks grip you and hold on tight, executing brilliantly a style that so many try but fail to grasp. Softer tracks such as ‘Made of Wonder’ show a sweet vulnerability, but we can’t help but want more of the theatre and attitude of the earlier tracks in the album. Jess Partridge
CLOUD BOAT BOOK OF HOURS
Apollo Records // Out Now
Tom Clarke and Sam Ricketts (not the Bolton Wanderers defender) aka Cloud Boat bring us an intoxicating debut album. Bedroom electronica, dabbed with intricate guitar work and soaring vocals, mix together to create a truly engaging listen. From the dreamy soft-edged beats of 'Lions On The Beach' through the wavering bass of 'Bastion' to the harrowing acoustic closer 'Kowloon Bridge', it's a record that never quite sits still long enough for you to appreciate it in its entirety. Once you've got your head round the varying sounds, it works its unrelenting charm on your ears. Jack McKenna
CSS PLANTA
SQE Music // June 10th
Consistency has always been a problem for CSS and in perfect keeping with tradition; they skip gleefully from the sublimely ridiculous to the absurdly ugly on ‘Planta’. For every sensual, subterranean blipfest (‘Frankie Goes To Hollywood’) or swampy guitar sprawl (‘Into The Sun’) there’s an awful nu-rave skit like ‘Teenage Tiger Cat’ lurking around. ‘Hangover’ stands head and sun-blistered shoulders above the rest. Its markedly daft lyrics counterbalanced by warbling synths, pitter-patter drumming and yawning guitars, serving up a reminder that on their day the Brazilians can be an absolute bawl. And despite the peppering of duds amidst the sun-baked bliss, their latest effort could hardly be accused of lacking that one vital ingredient: fun. Dan Carson 22

I’LL BE YOUR MIRROR
Alexandra Palace // May 4th

The tribal dance party of Prince Rama kicks things off; the sisters smashing floor drums and yelling for all their lungs are worth. Next the absolutely monster King Khan and the Shrines delight the crowd with a blend of psych and soul that takes no prisoners and gets the whole room dancing. By the time Dirty Beaches take the stage, with heavy synth vibrations that physically move us, we need a breather. "Do you know what the worst part of rock and roll is? NOTHING" yell the infamously badly-behaved Black Lips as they whizz through their surf punk bangers. The Locust absolutely couldn’t be missed; in uniform grey jumpsuits and insect helmets, they play their first UK show in 5 years to a noise hungry crowd, a set of brutal songs that last 90 seconds each - not for the faint hearted.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs bounce on stage to thunderous applause and we’re treated to an utterly brilliant performance from a band at their peak and taking the world by storm. Anti-fashion goddess Karen O, emaciated guitar hero Nick Zinner and beat master Brian Chase are joined by lo-fi legend Dave Pajo and open with ‘Sacrilege’, the first single from their new album ‘Mosquito’. Even without the gospel choir it sounds wholly holy wonderful and the only thing to top their ballad to slay all ballads ‘Maps’ is their party anthem to slay all party anthems ‘Head Will Roll’. It’s the third year that All Tomorrow’s Parties has graced this North London hill, and once again we’ve been presented with a blend of everyone’s favourites and cult classics in a way that no other festival around manages. STILL CORNERS
It’s Friday night and party vibes are flowing through The Garage. That’s because Nic Offer makes gigs fun. Wearing the most ludicrous pair of shorts you’re likely to see, tonight !!!’s frontman gyrates through the band’s 45 minute set, teaches the crowd how to dance (it’s all in the hips, you see) and even jumps into the pit to give one-to-one tutorials.
Coming on stage to a hushed and anticipatory audience, Still Corners immediately capture our attention and imagination. However it’s not until the third track that they really hit their stride, and we’re treated to their intricate brilliance and heartfelt warmth.
The Garage // May 10th
XOYO // May 9th
They play a set heavy with the funkiest hits from their most recent album Thri!!!er. ‘One Girl/One Boy’ and ‘Slyd’ are the choicest cuts and the smaller venue suits them and makes the party seem more intimate. The sound may be a little murky but it can’t stop the good times shining through.
Live, they’re fleshed out as a 4-piece and able to truly animate the tracks, making for an even more vibrant experience than on record. Tessa’s vocals wash over you, lulling you into a mesmerised state, but we’re snapped out of it by single ‘Berlin Lovers’ more forcibly grabbing attention and showcasing perfectly how Jason’s songwriting has evolved on their latest offering.

JUST ANOTHER GIRL... byJEN LONG I’m really bored of boys in bands. I’m bored of going to shows and not seeing a single girl on stage all night. I’m sick of standing next to crowds of ‘lads’ who heckle through the set. It makes me sad when I look at a festival line up and count a total of three girls playing across the whole weekend. I don’t know why it’s really started to annoy me so much lately. Perhaps it’s from seeing acts like Haim or Savages play and realising that music feels more personal the more you can relate to it. It’s like that Los Campesinos! line, “Four sweaty boys with guitars tell me nothing about my life.” I have no desire to slag off acts like Peace or Parma Violets, but I just don’t find much in their music that speaks to me. It’s not that I hate men in bands. I love Pulled Apart By Horses, DZ Deathrays, Deftones, Brand New, The National… I could go on, but that’s the thing. I could go on for a lot longer than I could list my favourite girl groups. I just want things to be a little more equal. I hate hearing acts described as a ‘female duo’ by my fellow colleagues. You’d never call Foals an all male five piece. And let’s not even get started on the, “She’s a girl, but she can actually play drums” line. If you say that to me, I will spit in your pint when you’re not looking. But the thing that annoys me most is, I don’t know who’s to blame. Whose fault is it that there aren’t more girls forming bands? Maybe it’s mine. Perhaps I should be practicing what I preach. Anyone want to start a band? Shout at me on twitter. 49
