W E LCOM E We did it guys, we got to our sixth issue. Meaning, for half a year now we've been learning (stumbling) and ricocheting through the highs and lows of making a magazine, and BOY was there a ton to learn. Still, we’re here, and I can't help but think back to the people who took a chance on us, with issue #1, when we had nothing to show. There was a group of people who thought - you know what we're in. They know who they are, and I've said it before, but I'll say it again, THANKYOU, we wouldn't be living out this ridiculous existence if it wasn't for you. Onto this issue; and unlike June, July is a pretty quiet month. There's still a bunch of top releases and super fun gigs, but not quite the plethora we're used to. I guess we all need to take a little breather sometimes, and this is one for the music world. But hey, let's get to some festivals and remember all those songs we've already fallen in love with this year.

LORDE
TENNIS COURT Lorde - aka 16 year old New Zealander Ella YelichO’Connor - might’ve caught the attention of music’s hipster royalty in Grimes and Sky Ferreira but she’s only just getting started. ‘Tennis Court’, the lead track from her debut EP, packs all the glamour of Lana Del Rey (without the faux trailer park back story) but couples it with R&B influences to make something fresh and extremely exciting.
TELEGRAM FOLLOW
6
Despite having only played a handful of gigs since April, Telegram have already swooped into BBC 6Music HQ and recorded a session for Marc Riley’s evening show. This cut from it proves why, Matt Saunders’ unusual Welsh tones standing out like intoxicating, romantic beacons amongst his bandmates psych-tinged warps of melody. They might be relatively unknown now but don’t expect Telegram to stay that way for long.
THE NIGHT VI
THINKING OF YOU “I’m done with being alone,” sighs Sophie-Rose Harper on The Night VI’s latest song, a heavenly waltz through separation and the unavoidable infatuation of love. Subdued but still with a hint of serenity, ‘Thinking Of You’ marks the London band out as one of the most elegant around.
WATER
CURRENTS FT STONE FOX ‘Mysterious producer’ might be a phrase that’s nearly worn out but at least Water is committed to the idea of not letting on about their identity. Instead, all they give us to assemble an image of who they might be is clinical, cold and introspective soundscapes like ‘Currents’, brought to life by Stone Fox’s exquisite vocals.
GLASS ANIMALS EXXUS
The b-side to the enigmatic Oxford band’s first single on Paul Epworth’s new label Wolf Tone, ‘Exxus’ bears a striking resemblance to Wild Beasts. Sparsely built, the track’s backbone comes via suitably restrained Hayden Thorpeesque vocals whilst whistling motifs drift around the repetitive lyrics to form something enthralling.

On the surface, making the transition from recording in your bedroom to working in a proper studio seems like a logical step. However, when your career has been built upon the lo-fi aesthetics that home-recording brings, it's also a huge risk. Thankfully it's one that paid off for A Grave With No Name. We sent Tom Johnson to catch up with Alexander Shields and find out exactly what we can expect from his wonderful third album ‘Whirlpool’. 10
What have you found yourself exploring on ‘Whirlpool’? The first two records are very insular; I wouldn't say they were bleak, but they're both incredible melancholy. I realised you need something to compare it to. I was trying to create euphoria and hopefulness and just make a more connecting record so that the other two have some context. If you just write about the same downbeat stuff then you get stuck in your own rut. At the start of these records you said you were making a trilogy. Is that still how you want it viewed? Oh 100%. I feel great because writing this record was kind of like writing the
everyone else begged me to get it right. You just don't feel as inspired as when you write a song and record the whole thing on your own at home. Does part of you wish you'd stayed in the bedroom? No way. I pushed that as far as it could go. I don't think any of the songs on this record would have worked in a bedroom-produced environment. So what sort of record can we expect? I figured that a lot of people who have liked my stuff in the past might find the accessibility of this one a bit alienating, but it was a conscious thing because I really love records that do that to
“I WAS TRYING TO CREATE EUPHORIA AND HOPEFULNESS” last Batman film! On ‘Mountain Debris’ and ‘Lower’ I was writing with a firm idea of how to set up and conclude the narrative running through them, but now on this record I could do whatever I wanted to and that was really exciting. How did you find the transition from the bedroom to working in a proper studio? It worked in a lot of ways. The new tracks sound great and actually have a much greater emotional impact I think. The part that I didn't like came from days spent sat around, with me trying to play this one guitar part for hours while
people! 'Adore' by Smashing Pumpkins, 'Up' by REM...they're all my favourite records and I wanted my own version! So it's an ode to them. Where did the title come from? Originally I was going to call it 'Higher', but all the songs mention events taking place either by or in water, so it’s just a visual representation of that. Whirlpools are quite mysterious things in their own way; it's something you look into and through rather than direct at. I liked that idea a lot.
A Grave With No Name play Birthdays July 17th and The Windmill July 27th. ‘Whirlpool’ is released by Stare July 1st.

Us people based in London - armed with Oyster cards, an innate understanding of the tube map and no reliance on a grid-based street system - we run around the city with impunity (and maps on our phones). If you’re Baths’ Will Wiesenfeld though, arriving in the rain-drenched dead of night, London isn’t always quite as easy. Read on for tears, desperate searches for those Golden Arches and a brief bit of nudity: London was where I arrived for the first night of my European tour sometime in 2010 or 2011. It was night time, raining, and my phone wasn't working, but I was too jet-lagged to panic, so I became this lost, globular idiot repeating the word 'McDonalds' over and over...All I knew was I had to find wifi so I could tell my parents I wasn't dead. McDonald's was my best bet. Alsooooo I needed to find this hostel where I was supposed to stay. That came first. London was hideously confusing that late at night. It was a nightmare. I finally found the place, but argued with the people at the front desk, cried, went out and sought a Mcdonalds again, ate some grease, emailed, and argued again before I miraculously checked in. At this weird youth hostel I had to padlock my suitcase in a cupboard in order to go take a shower. (The only good moment that night was remembering that I randomly packed a lock.) The shower had no heat and no water pressure, so I just like... stood under cold drips for 15 minutes. Also I forgot my towel and had to rush naked through a hallway full of strangers. Later that night, lying awake on my fuuUUUUuucking cardboard mattress, I was roused by the sound of four drunk dudes piling into our communal bunk space. I listened to them shout about 'puss' until six or seven in the morning, at which point, I got all my stuff together and headed to the train station for an 8-hour trip to my first show of tour later that night. That show went super weird.
Baths' third album ‘Obsidian’ is out now on Anticon.

The ascent of AlunaGeorge has always seemed the oft-told bedroom act cliche, but with a twist. While indeed spawned from informal sessions experimenting with beats and bleeps, their music has always seemed the finished, polished product from the very start. So, it is telling that their debut album, Body Music, runs fluidly from the first-heard 'Just A Touch' to more recent creations 'Diver' and 'Attracting Flies'. Luke Morgan Britton spoke to the eponymous R&B pair, in the run up to their pivotal record release. It's been a very hectic past year for you guys. Around this time last year you were just starting out live, now you've added live drums and guitar and are headlining shows of your own. How tough was this transition from bedroom to studio then stage? It's still a work in progress but we're getting there. When we first started it was just Aluna and myself and a bit of instrumental percussion, but we soon realised that people respond better if there's more of a live presence. If people are seeing you for the first time, you want to give them something to hold their attention. You're in the middle of a flurry of festival dates. Glastonbury must surely be something you're very much looking forward to. I've never been there before, even as a punter, so being able to go as one of the bands is pretty cool.
I hear it's really hard to get a ticket for too, so this way at least it gives us a way of getting in. You've just announced your first North American tour dates for August and September, that must be exciting. What are you looking forward to from that? Maybe chilling with Jay-Z backstage at Made In America festival? I'm not sure hanging out with Jay-Z is written into the actual contract, but I'll have to check. I actually haven't been to America before, so the main highlight is simply being able to go there for such a great reason. Your Instagram is always full of photos of you guys having loads of fun when on the road, so I take it you've embraced touring with open arms. Would you say this is one of the main benefits of being in a band? To be fair, part of the job is waiting around airports, but you've
“I'm not sure hanging out with Jay-Z is written into the actual contract
got to embrace it at the end of the day. We played Sonar in Barcelona last weekend and luckily for us all it was boiling hot, even if I did come back with sunburn. Your debut, Body Music, comes out next month. How was writing and recording the bulk of that compared to your earlier tracks that feature on it? Was it a case of having to lock yourself in a studio for weeks and buckle down to write a certain amount of material? There was actually not that much pressure, really. It all happened in three different stages and three different places. I guess the first was in my bedroom, then we
there seems definite fluidity throughout. Well, we definitely wanted the record to have its own "sound", so that you could tell all the tracks belong together. A common trend of albums this year has been an enormous amount of guest stars, you featured on the new Disclosure record for example. But this one seems to be solely AlunaGeorge, was this a conscious decision? It could explain why it fits together so well. It never occurred to us to have extra people on there, really. I don't know where they'd fit.
“we soon realised that people respond better if there's more of a live presence moved things into the studio. After spending about a year and a half there, we packed everything away and spent a week in some residential studios, just to get away and not be distracted. It was pretty successful as there we got five songs written in a week. Then the album release date kept being pushed back and back, so we had a bit more time on our hands to just keep on writing. The best of the ones written then have made it onto the final album. It's interesting that the writing and recording process was spread out over such a long period as, listening to the record,
But we've done a lot of remixes and have been remixed by some great artists. I always love hearing what someone else has done with something I've created. Finally, how would you like to cap off what's been a pretty exciting year for you guys? We're looking forward to getting the album out and seeing how audiences react differently live after they know the tracks a bit better. Body Music comes out July 29th on Island Records // You can see them live at Lovebox on Saturday 20th July

FUCK BUTTONS SLOW FOCUS
DEAP VALLY SISTRIONIX
After soundtracking the Olympics opening ceremony there might have been some pressure on Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power to deliver. They answer this in the only way they can: by pulverising your brain into mush. Rougher and more bristling than ‘Tarot Sport’, songs like ‘The Red Wing’ grow into a chaotic torrent of seething noise. Each track builds and churns away, with closer ‘Hidden XS’ a brutal crescendo. Just seven tracks long, and the first record Fuck Buttons have self-produced, there’s a swagger here and a sense that the duo are in complete control of the writhing sonics they’re creating. This is gold. Danny Wright
Clutter is a concept that Deap Vally might not even grasp if the spareness of 'Sistrionix' is anything to go by. The LA drums-and-riffs duo (so LA, in fact, that they look like forgotten members of The Runaways) make this their calling card on a debut with guitars that frankly have no right to be that loud on any self-respecting major label record. Whether rallying listeners to arms with the opening war cry of 'End Of The World' or delivering a whipsmart ode to one night stands on 'Walk Of Shame', their raucous blues rock rarely forgets to bring the party. Tom Edwards

NADINE SHAH LOVE YOUR DUM AND MAD
Apollo Records // July 22nd After years of shame brought on by Geordie Shore, the citizens of Newcastle upon Tyne have reason to rejoice in the streets: To be filed somewhere between Natasha Khan, PJ Harvey and Shirley Bassey, this brooding Geordie has crafted an intoxicating debut album, in the form of 'Love Your Dum and Mad'. Whether she's crooning over the deep bass lines of 'Aching Bones' or vulnerably soaring through 'Used It All', it's an extraordinarily delectable noise to behold. Her dark tales, laced with piano ballads, should be more than enough to keep ears enraptured. Jack McKenna
oOoOO WITHOUT YOUR LOVE
Nihjgt Feelings // Out Now Introverted, menacing, bleak and oddly compelling: The debut album from once Tri-Angle records signed producer oOoOO is a distinctly claustrophobic affair. Yet, amidst the record's dark atmospherics, eerie clattering beats and groaning, distressed vocals lies a secret warmth, found in the delicate piano loops, wispy R&B flutters and strangely straight-up pop refrains. Drawn together underneath a blanket of static noise, muted percussion and lurching, cyclic rhythms, 'Without Your Love' finds Chris Dexter shaking off the irksome genre definitions that marred his early EPs and exceeding expectations. Lauren Down
DAUGHN GIBSON ME MOAN
Sub Pop // August 8th Former trucker Daughn Gibson’s most vital tools are his Marlboro-stained vocal chords, which naturally, he exercises to heart-stopping effect on second LP ‘Me Moan’. ‘Phantom Rider’ is underpinned by a tender piano solo while ‘Mad Ocean’s bold Gaelic-sounding pipes retain an organic feel, contrasting with the crackly throb of ‘You Don’t Fade’ and its toing and froing Eastern vocal samples. Although labyrinthine electro-droning often engulfs his worldly touches during the latter half, ‘Franco’ highlights Daughn’s gentle side; his Ian Curtis-drunk-on-too-muchbourbon croon beautifully spun over wafts of clacking percussion and tremulous heartbreak guitar. The perfect album for this summer’s more downbeat days. Dan Carson

ICKY BLOSSOMS ICKY BLOSSOMS
Saddle Creek // July 17th You wouldn't immediately guess that Icky Blossoms are a Tilly and the Wall side-project. Electropop, and without a hint of twee, the Saddle Creek signed Nebraska trio's debut album is produced by David Sitek from TV On The Radio – and you definitely can hear his influence. Vocals come from Sarah Bohling and lead guitarist Nik Fakler, their voices blending intuitively together with a perfect amount of guitars mixed in with the synths, along with plenty of bass heavy tunes. This is catchy dance music with depth; a diverse and interesting debut packed full of promise. Emily Bruce
ABOUT GROUP BETWEEN THE WALLS
Domino // July 1st I'd suggest you give this album more than one listen, on first glance its schizophrenic nature, anxious noises and eclectic influences can seem grating, nonsensical. Although lacking some of the assurance of the like of Modest Mouse and Animal Collective this album is laced with a chaotic genius both those bands have mastered. Towards the end of the album (which includes a fucking mental cover of 'Walk on By') they come into their own, embracing the noise-tinged and R&B influenced to create something unique to them. That said, the vocals might just be a step too far for some. Jess Partridge
OLIVER WILDE A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO UNNATURAL LIGHTYEARS
Howling Owl Records // July 22nd Oliver Wilde has crafted something truly special. 'A Brief Introduction to Unnatural Lightyears' is a masterpiece - blending all the good bits of the acoustic, electronic and pop genres to bring together a truly unique, affecting debut. Describing himself as 'downer pop', there's nothing to be down about here - 'Perrets Brook' is such a beautiful listen, with its subtle harmonies, emotive content and effortless execution; you can't help but smile. His haunting delivery of delayed guitars and frog-in-throat lyrics on songs such as 'Pinch' and 'Flutter' ensure that this is a debut to pay attention to. Utterly flawless. Sammy Maine 22

THE GOOD GIG PUB GUIDE TO...
BRIXTON
“Does anyone know a good pub to meet in around..?” It’s the question you see time and time again, but we’re here answer it; We've done the research, we care, we’re here to help with a new area every month:
THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH A (leisurely) five minute walk from The Academy and a (brisk) fifteen from The Windmill, The Duke of Edinburgh is Brixton's undiscovered treasure. Hidden in SW9 backstreets, the decor of this pub is what you could once call shabby-chic, but we'll go for lo-fi mismatched charm instead. The main attraction though is the astonishingly (seriously) great oasis of a beer garden, which makes this the first choice pre-gig Brixton pub. Serving up an awesome barbecue in the summer, and with pool tables, dart boards and sports on tv for those that like sports on tv, this place has everything for everyone, but all the time feels like it’s just yours. Key gigs in Brixton this month: O2 Academy: Frank Ocean // Wu-Tang Clan // Ke$ha Brixton Windmill: Alcopopalooza (Johnny Foreigner // Stage Coach // My First Tooth + more)

SIN FANG // PASCAL PINON
Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen // May 29th Back after a successful show at Ja Ja Ja in March, Pascal Pinon have been causing a stir and raising a few eyebrows with their uniquely bleak folktronica, especially after the success of their recent debut album ‘Twosomeness’. Combining perfect harmonies and sparse beauty, there wasn’t a single weak moment throughout their all-too-short 30 minute performance. Ethereal ‘Ekki Vanmeta’ was as enchanting as ever and fan favourite, ‘When I Can’t Sleep’, was a mournfully charming reminder of the ridiculously high standard of music coming out of Iceland at the moment. Already baying for Sin Fang’s most recent single before the band had even 46
mounted the stage, the fervour of the crowd is hardly surprising given that, after six studio releases over half a decade, this is the Icelandic quintet's debut UK show. To the dismay of some, though certainly not to everyone, the set is liberally furnished with tracks spanning the breadth of the earlier years, leaving patient smiles on the faces of an audience possibly mostly here on the strength of recent album ‘Flowers’. However, and although a little awkward when translated live, ‘Young Boys’ is a masterpiece of lo-fi indie, and whilst the technical difficulties which plague ‘What’s Wrong With Your Eyes’ make for a slightly disappointing finale, it doesn’t detract at all from an inspiring evening. Sam Betts
GHOSTING SEASON // THE SLOW REVOLT
The Dance Tunnel // May 31st The Dance Tunnel very much does what it says on the tin, it is a tunnel to dance in. It's not really one for watching bands in, because well, the lack of stage (or indeed space) dictates that you shan't be able to see past the 3 people in front of you. That said, it is the perfect venue for such a beat filled night, The Slow Revolt open, creating stunningly catchy R&B tinged gems and transfixing the steadily growing audience. Ghosting Season come on to sweep us off our feet, their perfectly crafted electronica engulfing and lifting an already rapturous crowd. Not being able to see them doesn’t matter, we just want to keep dancing. Jess Partridge
JAMES HOLDEN
Corsica Studios // May 15th I'll admit I didn't catch all of James Holden's set to celebrate the release of his glorious new album, ‘The Inheritors’. I am, after all, only a human man and eight hours is just too much. I did my best – I was there for five and a half hours of his brain-frazzling set and emerged, blinking into the 6am sky, confused, wide-eyed and exhausted but very happy after a propulsive set of his own stuff – including a gigantic ‘Renata’ – and loads of other glitchy-krautrock-rave hybrids including a thunderous Battles remix of Four Tet. The crowd go wild and energy levels never drop; This man knows how to time a set – even one eight hours long. Dave Rowlinson photo: Sonny Malhotra

WHY AREN’T WE GOING INTO SPACE, MAN… BY AL HORNER It’s usually with a wide-jawed, jaded yawn that I thumb right past Justin Bieber newspaper stories on the bus to work each morning but one morning recently was different. “BIEBER BECOMES ASTRONAUT,” ran the headline, the star reported to be travelling with Richard Branson on one of Virgin Galactic’s inaugural commercial flights into orbit in 2014. After a swell twenty minutes daydreaming up a frankly-fucking-awesome Planet of the Apes remake in which the pop pin-up’s space mission goes wrong, returning to Earth years later to find the pet monkey he abandoned in German quarantine has risen up and enslaved humanity – hit me up for the rights to that one, Hollywood – it suddenly struck me. Somewhere along the line, western pop culture’s fascination with the final frontier has boldly gone to shit. From Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ to Super Furry Animals’ ‘Colonise the Moon’, from Patti Smith’s ‘Space Monkey’ to Ash’s ‘Girl from Mars’, our music constellation was once packed with star-gazers. This time 15 years ago, as the sci-fi sounds of Babylon Zoo’s (HORRENDOUS) ‘Spaceman’ was still blaring out on FM radios, blockbusters Armageddon and Deep Impact were doing big business at cineplexes. But in 2011, NASA's space shuttle program was shut down and a disappointing opening weekend last month for JJ Abram's Star Trek: Into Darkness, taking a meagre $70.8m worldwide, seemed to suggest that films about space travel can no longer live long and prosper at the box office. The ‘Starships’-singing Nicki Minaj aside, the music world nowadays rarely looks to that great big fuck-off black abyss above us, with all its infinite mystery, for inspiration. That’s a shame, right? As a kid, even the neon blue sky above Cape Canaveral seemed so exotic and full of possibility to me. Which is why I’m entrusting Bieber with sparking new interest in space for a generation whose main interest in stars are the ones on the cover of gossip rags. Godspeed, dude. 49
