Another month and even more festival talk. Fear not though, we’re here to make sense of the madness with this year’s Festival Guide. We’ve picked our favourite London-based productions and, as we said last month, we're delighted to be part of the likes of Visions, Camden Crawl and now Macmillan Cancer Support's Hear No Evil, which sees excellent, up-and-coming bands perform in one of our favourite arches (London Fields Brewery). Further afield there are huge festivals with even bigger line-ups that we only dream of being whisked away to. So get stuck in and plot some summer fun. Talking of summer fun, I'm pretty sure the new tUnE-yArDs album will fit hand-in-hand with the hazy days we have yet to come; bursting with the kind of energy and originality that won our hearts straight away. And, as ever, there seem to even more gigs than normal scattered across London, with some incredible acts hitting our shores. So if you don't mind we’re gonna get circling the gigs we want to go to whilst sipping on a gin in the sun.* Hopefully we'll see you there. *Sun not guaranteed

with ALFIE
WINSTON & GOLDSTEIN
A precocious south London songster of Niall Galvin’s gobby ilk, Alfie’s I Have Nothing To Say resonated with such remarkable sagacity that it startled with the immediacy of a malodorous Brockley Market fish skin to the chops, even from a first play. And, as though it weren’t intoxicating enough already, its video saw Alfie in decadent mood, likely inviting a cardiac arrest to dinner as he washed down a box of gritty chicken with fags and liquor. Heady, indeed.
An erstwhile crony of Brighton melodramatists Kins, Jacqueline Collyer, alias Winston & Goldstein’s Ode To A Massive Obsession vividly suggested she was well within her rights to go it alone, the decision vindicated in four-and-a-bit minutes reminiscent of Anika and Cold Cave; Vince Clarke-equipped Depeche Mode and East India Youth. If not total, a fair amount of strife had seemingly prompted its production too, with a Kraftwerk-like interlude ensuring Collyer could well be on her way toward kindling a so-called ‘massive obsession’ herself.

JUGURTHA
ARAB LOVERS The notion of Eastern timbers fraternising with Western tropes is now relatively commonplace in contemporary electronic music, although Parisian duo Jugurtha’s Arab Lovers steps on from where Fatima Al Qadiri and Forest Swords have dared to tread in times past, putting an altogether more ecstatic spin on such cross-cultural interplay.
SAU POLER JUUN
Although nascent Catalan talent Sau Poler astounded with last year’s Illusion Of Time, the melancholy Balearica of Juun could well be his very best yet. A meticulously crafted mesh comprising chopped vocal samples, skewed twinkles and intricate, polyrhythmic beats. If attuned to the muzzy humidities of London, then it transports to Barcelona in seconds.
STRANGE BODIES THIS TOWN
The nom de plume of Asheville’s Joel Blanken, This Town takes the feigned insouciance now renowned of revered wet blankets Real Estate, and washes it in the soft ebullience known of Bradford Cox’ Atlas Sound. Blanken sings of “feeling useless in this town”, although he’d be very welcome here in London as and whenever the mood were to take him.

GOODBYE CHANEL Just as a good song can root you in a specific moment forever, its transportative power is such that it can deliver you to an era or location beyond your realm of experience. Goodbye Chanel haven’t yet had the exposure to achieve the former, but they’re already doing the latter brilliantly. At odds with their peers, the Leeds-based five-piece don’t deal in gritty, punk missives or cacophonous kitchen sink confessionals: their forte is fashioning a kind of aspirational nostalgia, with songs inspired by the sea, French girls, Cadillacs and the Parisian Metro. Utilising dancing rhythms, undulating ripples of guitar and reverb-laden vocal harmonies, you could perhaps posit them as a dreamier Real Estate, or a less insular Youth Lagoon. Their first EP – Through Night To Paradise – arrived last August, when Goodbye Chanel was still ostensibly the
solo project of Newcastle singer-songwriter Scott Johnson. Now incorporating the talents of Giuseppe De Luca, Sean Goodchild, Adam Taylor and Graham Robson too, Hot City Nights marks their debut release as a five-piece. From the tropical-pop of Foreva to the undulating groove of the title track, their swooning melodies arrive shot-through with a wistful undercurrent of longing. It’s a glorious listen, and probably the ideal soundtrack to a summer spent cruising the Pacific Coast Highway in a vintage convertible. And if your budget won’t allow, you can always hit play and head to California in your mind.

BIG UPS There was definitely something unusual about hot dogs and coffee for breakfast, but nothing seemed terribly eerie or out of the ordinary. Something about the meal made me feel guilty. I knew my bandmates were not about to shame my eating habits, but I felt as if I had gotten away with something naughty or perhaps upset ‘the powers that be’. If I knew about the events to come, I would have never done something so unholy as combining two conflicting substances like mustard and coffee inside my own body. There are many idioms regarding breakfast, food, and respecting your body, and they don’t bear repeating… The tube of meat rolled around in my stomach as we walked along the Thames, taking in the tourist attractions. We posed for photos near Big Ben, the London Eye, and talked about our upcoming shows quite casually. I cannot pinpoint the moment when everything began to change, but subtly, there was an undeniable tremor. It was like a small spider crawling on the hairs of your forearm; it was hard to say when I actually felt it, but when I noticed it, it was irrefutable. The shaking increased rapidly, and suddenly, the scene unfolded into chaos. Limbs from trees crashed into vendors slinging Union Jack beanies, and violent waves crashed through the streets. It was a disaster. A piercing clamor filled the air, and glass fell to the streets and shattered into tiny perfect cubes. I looked into the distance to try and get a sense of the situation. Had some construction equipment collapsed? Was there a car accident nearby? But suddenly, everything froze; debris was suspended in midair, and everyone’s mouths were stuck agape. There was a slight rumbling, and The Shard split into two perfect halves. A slime oozed from the crevice as the building slowly split open like a walnut. An enormous, fleshy mass began to emerge as The Shard cracked further. The giant wriggled and freed itself from its mother; it was a ginormous worm. It thrashed in the air, flinging mucus at the frozen landscape surrounding its disgusting alien body. It stopped its dance, and pointed its head right in my direction. Then, in a language that can neither be heard nor spoken, the worm hissed, “Do you know when the new season of ‘Made in Chelsea’ airs?” Joe Galarraga BIG UPS PLAY GREAT ESCAPE MAY 8TH AND THE SEBRIGHT ARMS MAY 21ST

CC14
Rebranded as CC14, the iconic multi-venue festival, Camden Crawl, returns this year to bring tons of the best new music to a two-mile stretch of Camden’s High Street, and beyond. There’s an awesome mix of all our favourite promoters and publications on board to curate stages, which has led to an amazing, eclectic mix of music across over 25 venues (including our very own stage at The Beatrice). With stages of every size, even the most discerning music lover will be whizzing from venue to venue until the early morning.

together of festival juggernauts ATP, Pitchfork and Primavera was always likely to result in a heady collision of all the noise and leftfield artists you’re likely to see gathered under one roof this summer, and this inaugural instalment of Jabberwocky has not disappointed. It's going to be interesting to see how The Excel Centre works as a venue but, to be honest, the line-up is so packed to the rafters with astonishing acts, you’re unlikely to spend much time inspecting the surroundings. Well, apart from when James Blake’s on.
FOUND
Last year saw Found condensing its spectacular array of events across the city into East London’s Haggerston Park for the first time. No amount of rain or wind could dampen spirits and the event took off to huge success. This year it’s going to be bigger and even better, bringing together a mix of pioneering electronica and house influenced by the musical movements of the likes of Berlin, Detroit and New York, Found brings that excitement to our doorstep.
WHERE: HAGGERSTON PARK, SHOREDITCH WHEN: JUNE 14TH GO SEE: HEIDI, EJECA, MOODYMANN ONLINE: @foundseries
FIELD DAY
Field Day is a firm favourite in the London In Stereo calendar, with days we’ll never forget (and partly can’t remember) being spent there since its inception in 2007. Now bubbling over into a fully fledged 2 day festival for 2014, its consistently excellent booking policy remains fully intact. Leftfield electronica, meets the coolest pop acts, meets the most ridiculous rock (anyone remember that Fucked Up set?). It’s a euphoric kind of day that can’t help but leave you buzzing with excitement at the amount of fantastic new music you’ll have heard. Take your friends, take an umbrella and most importantly take your (muddy) dancing shoes. VISIONS
One of the abiding memories of last year’s festival season was sitting on the sun-drenched terrace of Oval Space, soaking up Hackney views, and reflecting on what an absolutely incredible occasion it was. That, and the absolute blast of Cloud Nothings’ set. Back this year, and set over four unique venues all within a few minutes walk of each other, we’re expecting even more fun - and not just because we’re lucky enough to be involved this time. There’s plenty more to be announced for the line-up still, but already there’s an enticing combination of utter party (yes, Andrew WK, that’s you), pop thrills and a slew of the most talked-about new acts. WHERE: VARIOUS VENUES, HACKNEY WHEN: AUGUST 2ND GO SEE: POLIÇA, RAINER, PERFECT PUSSY, BATHS, JACCO GARDNER ONLINE: @VisionsFestival
BUSHSTOCK
London always plays host to the very best of multi-venue festivals, and we’re incredibly lucky to count Bushstock among them. Now in its fourth year, Bushstock takes some of the beautiful, less frequented venues of Shepherds Bush and fills them with incredible new talent. With fewer venues and less area to cover it’s slightly more relaxing than its contemporaries, affording you the opportunity to really get to grips and enjoy the array of bands throughout the day. That’s not to say there’s not a hectic, full-to-the-brim day ahead of you though, with over 30 bands confirmed to play there’s more than enough to get stuck in to.

THE GREAT ESCAPE
Brighton is the perfect place to host ‘Europe’s Leading Festival For New Music’; the sheer density of venues within the picturesque seaside town makes running around to catch the best new acts both easier and more enjoyable. Often referred to as the SXSW for the UK, everyone who is going to be anyone in the next year will be showcasing their talents. The brilliance of this festival lies mostly in its surprises, whether it’s a surprising band, a secret show you stumble upon, a place you end up in, or scenery around you. It’s an absolute must for any real music fan. WHERE: VARIOUS VENUES, BRIGHTON WHEN: MAY 8TH-10TH GO SEE: SAY LOU LOU, TOVE LO, MØ, WOMAN’S HOUR, LIZZO ONLINE: @thegreatescape
LATITUDE Heading into its eighth
year, Latitude has become the go-to music and cultural festival in the UK. This year it’s boasting probably their best line-up yet, from huge acts like Damon Albarn, Hall & Oates and Haim to the best new music, with the Lake Stage curated by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens. But it’s not all about music, with comedy, poetry and literary tents, there’s the respite that you just don’t get at other, often gruelling, weekend camping festivals. It took years to find the perfect spot to host the festival, and it’s clear to see why, the mix of open fields, magical woodland and stunning lake is a uniquely beautiful setting.
WHERE: HENHAM PARK, SUFFOLK WHEN: JULY 17TH-20TH GO SEE: KELIS, MOGWAI, LYKKE LI, SOHN ONLINE: @Latitudefest
END OF THE ROAD
Like many of the festivals we’ve chosen, End Of The Road is a truly special affair. Growing bigger each year, it hides a multitude of treats and escapes within its doors. Not only does it boast a stellar line-up, but the interactive art installations, the shower karaoke and the light-up dance floor in the woods all ensure there’s no boredom to be found, day or night. A festival that really feels like it cares about making sure every person has the best time possible, which is a rare treat indeed.
WHERE: LARMER TREE GARDENS WHEN: AUGUST 29TH-31ST GO SEE: THE FLAMING LIPS, ST VINCENT, tUnE-yArDs, JOHN GRANT ONLINE: @eotr
WHERE: VARIOUS VENUES, BRISTOL WHEN: OCTOBER 25TH GO SEE: TBA ONLINE: @simplethingsuk
Another urban festival that’s gone from strength to strength in recent years, Crack Magazine’s Simple Things sees the most iconic of electronic producers, alongside future stars, take over the streets of Bristol. Heading into its fourth year, it’s a jampacked twelve-hour stint that will see you mesmerised one second, jumping up and down the next and stumbling across your new favourite act whilst rushing to catch that-thing-you’ve-just-been-dyingto-see. A whirlwind of a day in the best possible sense.
SIMPLE THINGS
IN THE WOODS
It was no surprise when In The Woods won ‘Best Independent Festival’ at last year’s AIM Awards, cementing its status from ‘best kept secret’ to ‘most talked about’. Small but perfectly formed, it’s often described as the most beautiful of festivals. The surrounding woods allow the hosts Laurel Collective to plot amazing surprises around every tree. Always with a great line-up of the best new music, the stunning and intimate setting will no doubt see everyone vying for one of the only 750 tickets available this year.
WHERE: SECRET LOCATION, NEAR LONDON WHEN: AUGUST 29TH-30TH GO SEE: TBA ONLINE: @inthewoodsfest
ØYA From modest roots in 1999, Øya
festival has grown into one of Norway's mightiest and most vibrant festivals. This year boasts one of the best line-ups in Europe, littered with heavy hitters of every genre, it's not going to be hard to find the party. Filling four whole days in central Oslo, it's surrounded by greenery and, as with many of the best festivals, if you want to take a break from the music there's a bunch of great stalls selling records, clothes and food to get stuck in to. A beautiful festival in a beautiful city, what more could you ask for?
WHERE: OSLO, NORWAY WHEN: AUGUST 6TH-9TH GO SEE: OUTKAST, THE NATIONAL, BLOOD ORANGE, TODD TERJE ONLINE: @oyafestival
UNKNOWN
It’s hard to believe that this Croatian heavyweight festival is only in its second year. Predominantly dancebased acts with a sprinkling of indie, this week-long event will undoubtedly see sun-soaked revellers dancing ‘til the early morning, whether that’s on the beach, at the stage or even on the ever-tempting offer of boat/island/pool parties. With stunning views of the surrounding forest and crystal clear waters, if you’re looking for the kind of festival to pack up, get on a plane and forget all your worries at, then don’t look any further, this is the one for you. WHERE: ROVINJ, CROATIA WHEN: SEPTEMBER 8TH-12TH GO SEE: CHIC FEAT. NILE ROGERS, JAMES HOLDEN, MODERAT, WILD BEASTS ONLINE: @UnknownCroatia
ATP ICELAND
We didn’t make it to Iceland last year for one of ATP’s most exciting new ventures, but one glance at the line-up this year and the plane tickets were booked almost instantly. The site itself, set on a former NATO base, sounds impressively foreboding, so whilst we may not get dazzled by the Northern lights in July, the whole event promises to be an incredible treat for both the eyes and ears. The chance to see Portishead’s chillingly atmospheric music in this environment is going to be something to truly relish. Suffice to say, we can’t wait to be out there. WHERE: KEFLAVÍK, ICELAND WHEN: JULY 10TH-12TH GO SEE: PORTISHEAD, SWANS, FUCK BUTTONS, THE HAXAN CLOAK, SAMARIS, INTERPOL ONLINE: @atpiceland
WAY OUT WEST
There’s no way we could have a festival round-up this year, and not include Way Out West: The line-up is, quite frankly, ridiculously party, and the prospect of dancing long into the Swedish night to the likes of Outkast, The National and MØ must surely be one of the most enticing thoughts of the 2014 festival season. It might be too much to hope that a tabloid is based outside, handing out sausages and meatballs like in 2012 after the festival announced it was going vegetarian, but the bill is meaty* enough to make up for any of that (*sorry). WHERE: GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN WHEN: AUGUST 7TH-9TH GO SEE: OUTKAST, THE NATIONAL, ROBYN & RÖYKSOPP, JANELLE MONÁE, ICONA POP, MØ ONLINE: @wayoutwestgbg
GRUFF RHYS Let’s begin in October 1792. For that’s the year John Evans, a distant ancestor of Gruff Rhys, arrived in Baltimore having set off from Caernarfon in search of a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans. But that’s not even the half of it. Over the next seven years, Evans embarked on a series of adventures, produced a map of the Missouri River and left a trail of political chaos. Fast-forward to 2012 and Gruff Rhys, always a lover of a good story, had a plan. “We had the idea to follow the journey of John Evans and try to find his grave so we went ahead and did a tour and I recorded an album along the way,” he says in his gentle Welsh accent, as if it was the most normal thing to do in the world. Along the way he played shows (complete with a PowerPoint presentation) and wrote songs inspired by the journey. “We were travelling for about five weeks in total.” You packed in a lot, I mention. “Yeah, but John Evans’ journey along the same route took seven years … but I suppose he was walking most of the way.” At the beginning of the journey Gruff admits he didn’t know much of Evans’ story. “We were always finding out more things as we went along so by the end I had a full slide show but at the beginning it was pretty loose. I remember at the start I did a PowerPoint presentation to some professors at Yale University but I didn’t know that much.” And why did he choose PowerPoint? “There are some people in America who are ignorant of John Evans’ story, and don’t even really know where Wales is,
words: Danny Wright
so this was a way to give a general lowdown of what I was doing.” Over the course of his travels Gruff composed enough songs to write an album and was joined by Kliph Scurlock from the Flaming Lips to play drums. “He hits the drums harder than anyone I’ve met - really full volume. So he had a profound effect on the sound.” The record - entitled American Interior is a triumph. It certainly embraces his surroundings in a way you’d expect from an album written on the road, with the panoramic beauty of Lost Tribes and other odd sonic twists and turns. But this being Gruff Rhys, it’s not just an album: it’s also a (wonderful) film, a book and an app based on the song 100 Unread Messages. It’s this track - telling Evans’ story in a five-minute pop song – which plays a central part in the film. “But for the most part I hope that the songs on the album can stand alone – you could apply them to any human that’s in trouble.” And at the conclusion of his journey, what did Gruff find out about John Evans? “He was a determined guy and a tough guy – he travelled all that way with no kind of modern day technology to help him. I mean, though he probably had a compass,” he laughs. Now it’s time to bring this knowledge back to the UK. “I know the story better now I’ve had a couple of years with it. I’ll play on my own in theatres and then maybe get a big band for the festivals in the summer.”
American Interior is released May 5th via Turnstile. Gruff plays the Soho Theatre May 5th - 10th.
tUnE-yArDs
wo rd s : Lau re n Dow n pho tog rap hy: P h i l S h a rp
“Civil rights … Climate change … The Haitian rice market ... Gentrification … Armed robberies … Our complete exploitation of the developing world”: Merrill Garbus has a lot on her mind. The fearsome voice behind tUnE-yArDs, Merrill is softly spoken in person but has just the kind of wild, eager eyes you would expect from the creator of three convention-defying albums. The latest of these, Nikki Nack, is a complex, loop-laden, wonderfully experimental, and surprisingly catchy journey that she hopes “will strike a nerve with somebody. I also use these things to put myself on an uncomfortable position too, to see where I stand because, as uncomfortable as they are to talk about, I'm a part of the horrors that go on in this world too.” Despite the underlying serious subject matter (found in Water Fountain and Stop That Man in particular), Nikki Nack is a playful record - but then if you've ever come across anything the Californian native has done with bassist Nate Brenner, you would know that already. Fresh from the morning's photo shoot, face paint still intact, she explains how tUnE-yArDs maintain a balance. “I think in general tUnE-yArDs is about light and dark. The lyrics might be really dark, but also silly and funny at times. The music might be ebullient and joyful but there are still sounds in there that are like messed up and crunched out. The album was going to be called Sink-O for a long time, but to frame the whole thing as 'sinking' didn't feel like it would give it a chance to be a lighter album. When Nikki Nack came
Did I mention that Merrill has a great, if not utterly wicked, sense of humour? “I've been working out my obsession with cultures eating children” she says when we reach the subject of the album's interlude Why Do We Dine on the Tots? and the literary influences of Roald Dahl. “The BFG really changed my life for sure. That was the one I read over and over again. Later on in high school I got into reading his adult fiction, which is appalling at times. I mean really, really gruesome. Back when I was in college I did a show using puppets
“I'm a part of the horrors that go on in this world too.” along it felt good. Also, when you're making an album, you're thinking 'no one is going to like this' so to have the title rhyme with 'stinko', that's just asking for it you know?!”
that was called 'Kinder Munch' that was about children being sold to the butcher and fattened up and everything. Then I did a show when I was a solo puppeteer that was
called 'The Fat Kid Opera' about the same thing.” The 'Interlude' she reveals is a poem from her college days: “I discovered that I'd written it in 2004 and I thought the metaphor of it still applied.” Since her 2009 debut BiRd-BrAiNs, tUnE-yArDs has always been a vehicle for Merrill's incredible imagination and wonderful, childlike stories but the influence of things like Grimms' Fairy Tales and 80s American cult TV show Pee-wee's Playhouse, in particular, make themselves felt on this year's effort. “The sophistication of children, the fact that kids understand a lot of what's going on, is something I hadn't really realised. I mean I was young watching Pee-wee's Playhouse and it was weird stuff. It was really weird, but I loved it. The pleasure of a bowl of cereal on Saturday mornings watching Pee-wee's Playhouse, man, that was heaven!” “There is also an overall aesthetic of like … hyperbole. There's the colours that are just completely out of hand. There's so many different kinds of media like claymation, animation and the puppets and it's like, they just had it all. It was great to use that as an influence. With this album I had nothing to begin with. I had some scraps of songs and we were playing songs, but none of them really felt like what I wanted to be doing, so it helped me to think, 'What do I love? What are the things that, on a very deep and old level, still get to me?' And that was one of them.” Merrill's trip to Haiti plays an important role in the new album as well. During her time off after the last record, w h o k i l l, she started taking Haitian dance classes because she wanted to get her body more involved in rhythm. “I've taken West African and Caribbean dance before and really missed that sense of
being able to feel rhythms in my body that I couldn't necessarily play right off the bat. I can identify where a song is hitting hardest if I'm really connected through dance. Then I took Haitian drum lessons as a result of that.” A trip to Haiti led by her drum teacher followed. “We had our teacher come in and drum on the album and I did check in with him to say, 'Is this OK that I'm using not just Haitian rhythms but Haitian Voodoo, religion? I mean, that's a religion, right? It's a form of spiritualism. And there are spirits associated with these rhythms. I think he said, 'Why not? This is beautiful to see where your music meets with Haitian music.' And certainly there is a tradition within Haitian popular music of taking these traditional voodoo rhythms and combining them with a more modern band sound; with guitars, with keyboards, with secular singing on top of them, so it's definitely being done. It's not 'the Haitian album' though, I don't want it to be framed as that. I feel like an album is just a record of where you are at that moment and that was just what I happened to be doing and studying.” Nikki Nack is such a fascinating and multi-faceted record that there is no real risk of that happening. “I hope that it's dense and maybe difficult at times, but what I always hope for is that it's not empty. Sometimes what annoys me about music is when it comes up flat, shallow or two-dimensional, when it doesn't have meat to sink your teeth into. So that's what I want to bring to the music world.” If we had to judge, we'd say tUnE-yArDs has been more than successful in that endeavour. Nikki Nack is released May 5th via 4AD tUne-yArDs play Village Underground May 12th and Electric Brixton September 3rd

ire and spiky rage with which he used to kick back against this inertia seems to have been replaced by an exhausted resignation, beaten down by a malaise he’s warned us repeatedly against, from Colin Zeal, to Yuko and Hiro and to The Good, The Bad & The Queen’s Green Fields. It’s that latter band which mostly informs the sound here; all piano-driven and melancholiadrenched, Damon as morose as hell, not just at the dilemmas of the world, but with himself too. There are moments of introspection here that make Blur’s 13 sounds like an hour on the Country House milk-float. No more so than on DAMON ALBARN the wonderfully titled highlight The Selfish Giant, where, seemingly wracked with equal EVERYDAY ROBOTS amounts of guilt and accusation, that cracked, Parlophone // Out Now tender voice breaks into “It’s hard to be a lover If there’s a lesson to take from when the TV’s on, and nothing’s in your eyes”. It’s a heart-wrenching line, and the delivery Everyday Robots it’s this: destroys you, conjuring up the desolate scene, If modern life was rubbish illuminated only by the flicker and glare of harsh back in ‘93, it ain’t got any television light, perfectly. As ever, though, there’s better over the last twenty hope and salvation here as Heavy Seas Of Love, years or so. Indeed, if anything, we’re more detached, almost shanty-like, closes the album with gloriously life-affirming reassurance. Everyday insular and lonely than ever Robots is an exquisite record, and an important before. Plus, everything’s now one. Listen once, but don’t listen again. Call covered in concrete. What some people you love, go to the pub or go to the distinguishes this solo debut park, have a drink and have a catch-up with from Damon’s previous work, them. Then listen again, later. Dave Rowlinson though, is that the disbelief,
LYKKE LI // I NEVER LEARN Atlantic // May 5th
Shaking the devaluing ‘pop princess’ tag of her formative years hasn't been easy for Lykke Li, but I Never Learn - the final tome in her heart-strung trilogy - proves, melodically, to be the ultimate rebuke. Silverline is a lovelorn paean adorned with countrified, twanging guitars, while Just Like A Dream unfurls Lykke's solemn siren song against rolling thunder toms. No more than a tingling acoustic is required on Love Me Like I'm Not Made Of Stone - majestic, partly for her simple sincere cadence, and partly for its gut-wrenching lyrical undertones. Not the chart-straddling opus she's been threatening; but when it comes to marrying heartache with delicately restrained Scandi-balladry, and the occasional pop juggernaut - Lykke's the best around. Dan Carson
SWANS TO BE KIND
Mute // May 12th Since reforming in 2010, Michael Gira and his noisecrank crew have been busy. But unfortunately there is little truly new here to trouble listeners – except twelve-minute track Just a Little Boy for Chester Burnett. Its twisting dirge conjures up the dark menace of the blues legend better known as Howlin’ Wolf. As the tempo slows to a predatory slink it puts the creepy, processed singing of a frazzled Gira front and centre as he howls: “And I sleep in the belly of rhythm / And I sleep in the belly of love”. Eventually the tension is too much for the plaintive slide guitars to bear and it erupts in a particularly disturbing and, unusually for Swans, quiet way. Geoff Cowart
SYLVAN ESSO SYLVAN ESSO Partisan // June 2nd
When you recall her work with Appalachian-style folk trio Mountain Man, Amelia Meath’s output in Sylvan Esso represents something of a volte-face. The truth is, her lithe Feist-meets-Regina Spektor vocals, sound significantly more striking here – writhing around Nick Sanborn’s fractured beats and minimalist electronics – than they ever did a capella. Pairing jump-rope chants with handclaps and bruising dubstep subs on Hey Mami, and a hip hop swagger with delicate, musical-box chimes on Coffee, this deeply-inventive debut could easily have seemed crowded or disjointed. But this isn’t simply a series of electro-pop curios, it’s a cohesive statement, and a carefully-considered, skilfully-constructed one at that. Gemma Samways
DOUGLAS DARE WHELM
Erased Tapes // May 12th The trouble with being frantically lauded for an EP is that listeners adopt a similarly frenzied stance towards a debut album. Thankfully, Douglas Dare has shrugged off the numbing shackles of anticipation and crafted Whelm, a record so personal that its brutal lyrics could have been scribbled in earnest across the pages of a scruffy diary. From the tumbling piano keys of Whitewash to the slinking groove of Unrest, Dare’s unwavering lilt provides much of the LP’s poignancy, epitomised within the sweeping heartbreak of Repeat, although Swim’s fractured, shattering crescendo lingers longer than the rest. Bitterly lovelorn and wickedly haunting, Whelm will chill you to your bones. Lee Wakefield

WOLF ALICE TEETH DREAMS EP
Dirty Hit // May 26th As the single most blogged about band of 2013 and rightfully claiming every emerging artist award worth winning, you could say Wolf Alice are a pretty big deal right now. Creature Songs, the latest EP offering from the awkward alt-rockers, once again manages to encapsulate the essence of angsty door-slamming adolescent frustration, but this time they’ve really honed in on their craft; creating an unrestrained taint of genius. Tracks Moaning Lisa Smile and Storms are charming visions of beauty, invoking infectiously wistful vocals and mustering together a moody headbanging momentum. The rise of Wolf Alice is impossible to ignore and if their second EP instalment is anything to go by, then their debut album will be an absolute pleasure indeed. Amy Gravelle
Oberst claims that Upside Down Mountain is a “return to an earlier way I wrote,” but there’s no denying that over twenty years in bands, and the success of Bright Eyes, Desaparecidos et al, has taught him the craft of not only stellar but sellable songwriting. Zigzagging Toward The Light has a chorus made for ‘aw mate’ summer festival hugging moments, Kick grabs a slice of the electro tinged fashion, and the happy rolling Hundreds of Ways has already enamoured critics and fans with its pop brass and optimistic vision. Melancholic violins underpin jaunty melodies, moments of quivering give way to buoyant hopefulness, but sometimes this move away from lamenting folk veers into throwaway alt-rock pastiche. Despite Oberst’s fame, he again proves no man is an island, and has roped in pals, including the First Aid Kit siblings, multi-talented musician Blake Mills and producer Jonathan Wilson. This is a decent, vibrant, easy folk-rock fusion that will be a runaway success. Francesca Baker
THUMPERS // GALORE True Say // May 19th
Thumpers’ debut deals solely in the kind of densely layered, shimmering guitar pop that begs to be enjoyed outdoors in good company, so hats off to the in-house record label meteorologists who picked the release date for this one. Sometimes the thick blankets of effects laid on everywhere tuck Thumpers’ melodies in a little too tightly, but when they’re allowed to breathe, the results can be quite splendid. Single Unkinder (A Tougher Love) in particular sounds like its lungs are full of fresh, seaside air, and a few more tunes of the calibre of Galore could see them headlining the festivals for which this stuff is so clearly written. Thomas Hannan
THE TROUBLE WITH TEMPLETON // ROOKIE
Bella Union // May 12th Named after an episode of The Twilight Zone, these Brisbane alt-rockers have delivered a confident and enticing second album. Having released debut record Bleeders as a solo-artist, lead singer Thomas Calder recruited four additional hands to help craft Rookie, which has seen the band begin to move away from its folk roots. Polarising between the sound of delicate folk, brooding rock and In Rainbows-era Radiohead, it isn't a record that should work. But all of the contradictory elements seem to compliment each other enough to prevent it from sounding confused, and instead Thomas Calder et al's brainstorming has resulted in an impressive step forward for the band. Jack McKenna
OWEN PALLETT // IN CONFLICT Domino // May 26th
Despite a four-year stop-gap, In Conflict - the fourth LP from former Final Fantasy man Owen Pallett and second under his birth-given moniker - sonically picks up exactly where he left off with Heartland. But while that previous record transported the listener to an imaginary realm with a dual narrative concept, this new release seems more personal. Focusing on aspects of love and self-reflection, Pallett once again embraces darkness and channels it into a kaleidoscope of light. Celestial-sounding, looped violins are entwined with orchestral, Brian Eno-led, synths, and while it's bolder than we've ever heard Pallett, there's perhaps a lack of cohesion that stops it from reaching the heights of its predecessor. Luke Morgan Britton
SHARON VAN ETTEN // ARE WE THERE Jagjaguwar // May 26th
Brooklyn-based Sharon Van Etten’s Are We There, is a desperately beguiling fourth LP, with spine-tingling opener Afraid Of Nothing nodding to the cold beauty of Sigur Rós and welcoming us into the stark honesty of Van Etten's songwriting. Something nowhere more apparent than in Your Love Is Killing Me: "Break my legs so I can't walk to you / Cut my tongue so I can't talk to you" she cries in the record’s most emotionally powerful moment. Elsewhere the heart-break pours out from a softer source: the padded synth that accompanies Our Love juxtaposes the sadness, with Van Etten's cooing falsetto recalling the most pathetic imagery; "You say I am genuine / I see your back hand again" are nightmarish lyrics that nod to a well-documented relationship that almost barred her songwriting all-together. With this latest offering Van Etten has cemented herself as one of the very finest exponents of the harrowing but captivating love song; Are We There is a very special record. George O'Brien 37

REPEATER
BY SEAN ADAMS At gigs, there's a great deal of accepted etiquette that the majority of seasoned concert goers adhere to. Most understand that it's a bit of a faux pas to wear the t-shirt of the headliner you're watching (unless it's an Iron Maiden gig, then it's kinda okay). Exceptionally tall people tend to stand toward the sides or the back failing that they turn up right in front of me just as the house lights go down. And, of course, if you've downed a bottle of bargain-bin vodka in the queue, the general consensus is that you run to the toilet to throw up or, at the very least, find someone's handbag to vom into. Having suffered fools far too often lately, perhaps it's time one rule, perhaps known as a "photo policy", is no longer left unspoken. Taking photos is a tricky one. Everyone wants their own memento. Sure, snap a few, but if I have to watch the entire show through your screen, then I'm sorry but you deserve to have as many drinks accidentally spilt on you as possible, Pavlov. Photos in moderation are ok, but NEVER-EVER TAKE A SELFIE DURING A SHOW. This should be obvious, but you're there to hear and see a live performance (or at least see some be-hooded Brooklynite twiddle some knobs beneath pretty projections). You can take a photo of yourself anywhere (selfiesatseriousplaces.tumblr.com) but if you spend an entire song repeatedly flashing in my face until you get that perfect shot of you gurning, then I'm sorry but you deserve to see me shoving my fingers up in the background of your photo or [redacted for legal reasons]. Next time you take a look at yourself in that black-mirror, free your mind by remembering the words of Fight Club's Tyler Durden: "You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everyone else, and we are all a part of the same compost pile." And now turn off that phone and watch the f'in gig. Thank you kindly.
