WELCOME iamamiwhoami
You know what? Over the entire life of this magazine I've been trying to locate some Alphabetti Spaghetti to make the 'Penny For Your Thoughts' title from. We've had so many other things; cookies, beans, pins, we've even drawn on the walls. But living in central London and only having access to tiny shops with their shameful range of canned goods meant it was ever elusive. This month marks the end of my quest though, as alongside some fantastic words from Karen Piper the
tomato soaked title sits proudly. They really need to up their game when it comes to the shape of the letter ‘N’ though. These trivial things aside, November marks another month jam packed full of gigs, and exciting releases as everyone prepares for the winter months. Of course it's also the start of mulled wine season, and for that, we're endlessly grateful.

ON THE STEREO WITH
TINASHE FEAT. DEV HYNES BET
We could discuss the way DJ Dahi turns pops, snaps, and gelatinous gurgle into the sound of sensuality, and we should. We could marvel at the lightning-strike Dev Hynes guitar solo that appears out of nowhere to close Bet out, and, of course, we will. But let's not forget the young visionary riding atop the ripples, running shit like Poseidon. Tinashe sings, "I'ma be around forever always”. Given the quality here, don’t bet against her. Chris DeVille
JAWBREAKER REUNION
STRAIGHTEDGE REVENGE
TINASHE LiS 06
Jawbreaker Reunion was born in the basement of a dorm room at Bard College, and their music shares all of the exhilaration and restlessness that comes from that kind of environment. Their debut album is ferocious, smart, and empowering — but most importantly, hyper-self-aware. Straightedge Revenge tackles anxiety head-on, using JBR’s brand of slumber party punk to take on some serious issues while still being a hell of a lot of fun to listen to. James Rettig

YYU
CHUMPED
YYU's first album TimeTimeTime&Time sounded like a footwork producer remixing a folk album, but it was all Ben Straus, a songwriter who balances virtuosic guitar work with hypnotically repetitive beats. His newest, Room Music, lowers the bombast in exchange for an intimacy approaching Animal Collective's Sung Tongs, with the aquatic Wish as its gentle peak. Miles Bowe
Naming your pop-punk song after a hip-hop radio station’s annual stadium show is cheeky. Hot 97 Summer Jam is no joke, though. Anika Pyle sings “I’m looking at you, you’re looking through me”, communicating a self-doubt that belies her obvious musical assurance. Summer’s long gone, and this remains a jam. Chris DeVille

HOT 97 SUMMER JAM
CHUMPED
Copenhagen’s Communions have a catalog that is exactly two 7”s deep, but those two 7”s suggest a classic LP down the road. So Long Sun feels like an early Stone Roses jam — spindly guitars, baggy rhythms, acid-soaked melodies, transcendent bliss. Its title is a misnomer, though: this thing is blindingly bright, and, if anything, rising. Michael Nelson STEREOGUM ONLINE: stereogum.com @stereogum // facebook.com/Stereogum

SYLAS
Why bother paying for PR, when one of the biggest influencers in the industry is already singing your praises for free? It’s this enviable position that Brian Eno-endorsed outfit Sylas have unwittingly found themselves in. The story goes that the Music For Airports-maker met one half of the production duo at a singing group in London, and was blown away by – what he has described as – “the most beautiful voice”. A few years on, he’s now luring journalists to his private studio to hear their work, and acting as consultant on their self-titled EP. It isn’t difficult to see what drew Eno in. Signed to the same label that put out SOHN’s debut single, Sylas explore a similar sub-strand of brooding electronic pop, albeit one of a noticeably gloomier hue.
On EP-opener Shore the pair summon a soulful groove from bubbling percussion and warm layers of synths, then rapidly snatch away any sense of comfort with disquieting lines like, “Daughter, you’re screaming in your mouth”. Hollow is even more ominous. Redolent of James Blake or Darkside, it sets ambient pad sounds colliding against cold, pitch-shifted vocals, that warn, “Once I give into this apathy, the vultures will wait on me”. It's meticulously-layered, skillfullyrendered compositions like these that suggest they’re talented and imaginative enough to sustain our attention for some time to come. With or without Brian Eno’s support. LISTEN TO: HOLLOW ONLINE: @syyylas LiS 11

TALES FROM THE CITY by Terror Pigeon
I've been to London twice. The first time was chill. There was an old school spot light at the show, and a dude whose job it was to illuminate me as I scampered up and down the venue's elaborate duct work. I felt very rock star. We played with a dope boy band that wasn't famous. I can't remember their name. My second visit to London was more dire. I was shitty at having money then and had to spend maximum wallet on plane tickets. Between JFK and our first show two days in, my life partner / deodorant sharing brother homie Tyler and I had $20. We arrived at one of London's impressively far away airports late at night. We went straight to Pickadeli and set up camp for the night. I say camp cause we used the parachute we throw on the audience at the end of our show as a makeshift bed thing when we're spending the night in a train station, airport or mini golf course. London train station cops were surprisingly chill about our fort, paying us no mind as we quickly
discovered that London in the fall means ‘harshest winter imaginable at the North Pole’. Spirits were fading fast. In situations where I've ruined everything I find it's best to offer atonement in treat form. I located the only open restaurant and perused their dessert menu. Everything cost at least twelve cursive L's which was ruffly 3,000 American dollars. Luckily a friendly boy named Toby accepted the meager bills and coins my $20 had converted into. We sat huddled together in the train station, too cold to sleep, eating tiny pieces of brownie, hoping to make it last longer. Then Toby showed up with some mother fucking complimentary tea. Toby rules! Where ever you are Toby I fucking love you! The tea warmed us up, giving us the strength to fight off the pack of wolves that had been stalking us. "Not this time wolves" we yelled. TONY ALLEN
WORDS: THOMAS HANNAN PHOTOS: BERNARD BENANT
“All day I’ve just been yap, yap, yap,” exhales 74-year-old Tony Allen after our interview. He’s pleasant company, but doesn’t like talking to journalists. Or writing lyrics. Or singing. Allen – who along with Fela Kuti in Africa 70 pretty much invented the entire genre of Afrobeat – would rather be playing drums. “I didn’t want to sing on this album,” he tells me. “I wanted to make it instrumental; it would have the same strength. Playing and singing together, it’s complicated. My drumming is already complicated. I don’t want to do the job of two people.” Allen’s drumming isn’t just complicated, it’s bewildering. But luckily the man Brian Eno once described as “the greatest drummer ever” isn’t short of folks to lighten his load. Guests appear throughout his excellent Film Of Life album, with sonic compadre Damon Albarn receiving particularly lofty praise. “Damon is family. I cherish him because he made me enjoy playing music again. He’s the one guy, apart from Fela Kuti, I’ve worked with for fifteen years. He has it – he has what I’m after, what will make me be on. I like to play with others - I bore myself. I don’t want to eat all the cake. I want to share my cake.” It isn’t just collaborating that keeps Allen’s music fresh. One of his greatest influences seems to be himself, in that he doesn’t want to replicate anything he’s done before. “It’s five years since my last album. I can’t afford to rush; they start to look like each other, every time the same. I challenge myself to make patterns that don’t look like other drumming. I want to cut the monotony of thinking Afrobeat should be a certain way. I’m trying to make music that stretches, without an end. It’s a spiritual business.” If Tony Allen were a slightly worse drummer than he is, he’d remain one of the greatest. I wonder what motivated him to ascend from merely being a good drummer to being a brilliant one. “All of the ‘good’ drummers who were playing, I passed through those styles, and
they never did,” he replies in a voice more humble than that makes out. “Everyone copies Western drumming when they start. How long are we going to do that? I wanted to put my own thing down for people to follow.” While never struggling for rhythmic inspiration, lyrical muses are something Allen finds harder to come by. When they hit however, they hit hard. Describing the story behind Boat Journey, which details the plight of refugees, he imparts: “I was watching the news and saw human beings dying. Who wouldn’t feel this? The situation at their place is so bad that what they’re trying is the only solution. Boats capsize, hundreds lose their lives, and the ones who arrive get caught. Is jail preferable to being at home? There’s a reality there, and I feel for them. I said, ‘let me sing about that, otherwise, I don’t want to sing.’ I came from there too; the situation was bad when I left Nigeria. Music was dead because of the Army. When you go out in London, you see people going to clubs – it’s rocking. That’s how Lagos was before, until ’77. Then it started diminishing, and soon it was finished. Before it was running fine, and there wasn’t even any oil – it was running on agriculture. There was light, water, roads, and when they wanted to make a slum clearance in Lagos they would provide a brand new town all ready for everybody from the slum. Today they clear you out to build a road, and you find yourself under a bridge. There’s a lot of money now, because of oil, and the more they have the worse the country becomes. That’s why I sang N.E.P.A in ’84 - ‘Never Expect Power Always’. It’s still true.” Film Of Life is out now on Jazz Village. Tony Allen plays Village Underground November 20th LiS 15

HOOKWORMS THE HUM Weird World November 10th
RECORD OF THE MONTH HOOKWORMS // THE HUM
Stand Out Tracks: The Impasse Radio Toyko Beginners Off Screen
There is this moment in between the opening binary electronics of The Impasse and the primordial punk that soon follows where Hookworms seem to take a collective @HOOKWORMS breath. It feels as though - in this briefest of silences - the facebook.com/Hookworms Leeds five-piece are taking stock of mounted expectations, squaring up to any boundaries laid by debut album Pearl Hookworms play Tufnell Mystic and, by way of the most unforgiving wall of noise, Park Dome October 28th saying “fuck that”. Thirty seconds into their new album The Hum and Hookworms have already obliterated any previously set parameters and have pushed their brand of wild psychedelic abandon into more driven, intense and direct territory. That's not to say there isn't a heavy dose of Spaceman 3-era garage psychedelia present in everything they touch, more that the new unrestrained Hookworms aren't afraid to dive headfirst into the hardcore roots and raw punk energy that helped shape Pearl Mystic (but by no means defined it). Of course it's not just their recent single that bears witness to this fiercer sound, indulgent six-minute highlight Beginners does a particularly spectacular job of elevating the tape-delayed product of MJ's emptied lungs above the swirling mass of reverb before carrying his words off on waves of screaming organ keys. Much like its predecessor, The Hum offers up serene, instrumental-only respites in the form of iv, v, and vi but it's in Radio Toyko and On Leaving that Hookworms find a new way to temper those blistering, eviscerating slabs of frenzy – this time with something tantamount to pop. Or at least, as pop as Hookworms could ever be. Feeding Motown melodies into droning motorik rhythms and leaning on these hulking blues guitars, album closer Retreat is the ultimate culmination of an altogether more upbeat Hookworms and provides the perfect sign-off for a relentlessly unapologetic record; MJ howling - as if finally coming up for air - “you got this impasse in the wind”. Yeah you do. Lauren Down
ALEX G DSU
Lucky Number // November 10th How Alex G got here is something of an enigma, his sudden rise from small-time, lo-fi nobody to Pitchfork wonderboy both baffling and deserved. Picked up stateside by the formidable Orchid Tapes - whose founder Warren Hildebrand is himself responsible for one of 2014’s most stunning releases under the Foxes In Fiction moniker - it’s heartwarming to see so many now paying attention. And rightly so, for DSU is a modern masterpiece of songwriting. While the Philadelphian favours substance over style, his production is not too basic as to render it abrasive; rather cementing each track as a considered, impressively constructed achievement of its own. Offering something new with every listen, DSU may well be the year’s most genuinely exciting and, ultimately, rewarding album. Jack Urwin
GIRLPOOL
GIRLPOOL EP Wichita // November 17th In an industry that portrays young women as either hyper-sexualised or absurdly wholesome, LA duo Girlpool are a heartening anomaly. Attacking gender stereotyping, racial inequality and ‘slut-shaming’ – plus some terrifically skeezy-sounding exes – teenagers Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad display precisely zero interest in perpetuating patriarchal myths, and zero fear in calling out societal injustice for the bullshit it is. There’s bravery in the way their ideas are presented here, too. Choosing lo-fi production values, and a minimal palette of guitar, bass and brilliantly bratty harmonies, the pair purposely avoid diluting or obscuring their message. Ranging from the Sleater Kinney-ish punk of Blah Blah Blah to the rickety blues of Jane, this is a doozy of a debut, and one that might even mobilise the masses. Gemma Samways
KRILL
LUCKY LEAVES Steak Club // November 17th “Whenever I have a good time, I just miss my suffering” Krill’s lead singer Jonah sings in a nasal drawl on Oppressor. On Boston band’s third album (making its way over to our fair shores only a year after its original release) it’s hard to discern whether they are having a damn good time goofing around or communicating a tormented and tumultuous existence. The dozen strong collection of disorientating and obscure quirk rock tunes flutter with wry and lightly impudent observations on life, lust, grit and grime. Capering through pitch shifting melodies, shuffling percussion tangles with snarling riffs and chords, making it a raw and disturbing parcel of irreverent sketches. A deviant and oddball album, and so much the better for it. Francesca Baker LiS 19
DEERHOOF
LA ISLA BONITA Upset The Rhythm // November 3rd Deerhoof’s twelfth record was reportedly laid to tape amid heated arguments over whether it should sound more like Joan Jett or Janet Jackson. It appears they never came to an agreement, with La Isla Bonita being as much of a twisted rock album as it is an exercise in twitchily-wrong pop. This charming LP finds the San Francisco quartet indulging both their most accessible (the lilting bounce of Paradise Girls) and outré tendencies (as on the semi-dub ballad Black Pitch), coalescing to make their Upset The Rhythm debut arguably their finest LP since 2007’s excellent Friend Opportunity. There’s weight in the argument that perhaps nobody needs all twelve Deerhoof albums, but if you find yourself in possession of none, this is a recommended remedy. Thomas Hannan
KORALLREVEN
THE WHARVES
Cascine / Sony // November 4th
Gringo Records // November 3rd
If you’ve been patiently yearning for Korallreven’s second full length offering for longer than you care to admit, I feel your pain. An Album By Korallreven was a blissful exploration of understated grooves and sumptuous electronica, and in Second Comin’, the Swedish duo have taken a firmer grip of the dance floor. Of course, it has been threatened on occasions in the past, but tracks such as The Highest State Of Grace and Spirit Away take the bashful flirting with the disco ball to fourth base, armed with strobes, sucker-punching synths and glittering production. If the first record is treasured for its seamless construction, Second Comin’, it could be argued, feels a smidgen disjointed in that department – it’s likely, however, that you’ll be dancing far too hard to care. Lee Wakefield
Another day, another “quirky” London based band comes strutting around the corner trying to grab our attention, but quite frankly, why should we give a damn? Well not only does The Wharves’ debut record At Bay piece together reverberated 60s girl group concepts of yesteryear, but the haunting vocal twists that build up to witchy crescendos manage to keep things stimulating enough for a sound that, on the face of it, feels outwardly nostalgic. Left, Right And Centre and The Grip hold enthralling drum rhythms and thrilling choral narratives, but for a debut the songs tend to meld into one, and maybe lack the depth for anything greater than a friendly introduction to the band. Having said that, there’s no doubt that The Wharves have potential for greater exploration in the future. Amy Gravelle

DEPTFORD GOTH SONGS
37 Adventures // November 3rd Simply calling your album Songs makes sense for the open-hearted yearning of someone like Deptford Goth. Even more so than the diary-like Life After Defo, here Daniel Woolhouse sings tenderly of love and relationships like he’s only talking to you. While it perhaps lacks that debut’s fluency, it makes up for it in heart and joy. The gentle heartstring pulls of Do Exist and the life-affirming beauty of Two Hearts mean this is a more blissful opus to relationships. Repeated listens also reveal an artist opening up – the spaces in the sound filled by a confidence in Woolhouse’s own voice. It makes for an album that looks outwards rather than inwards, one that reveals a belief that everything will be okay in the end. As he sings on The Lovers “Love stays, everything goes”. Danny Wright
LES SINS
MICHAEL Company Records // November 3rd The music of Chaz Bundick has continued to evolve since making waves with those first glitch pop tones back in 2009. Whether with lo-fi acoustic, afro-beat or r‘n’b, the Toro Y Moi moniker has consistently expanded and resisted expectation. In a funny way then, his debut release as Les Sins offers the chance to start afresh while also reverting back to his laptop based roots. A playful record from start to finish, Michael pogoes its way gleefully through a universe of displaced dance music influences. Like a shape shifting Chad Valley he tries his hand at it all – from the Chromeo lacquered funk of Why to the Zomby-fied house sound of Call – and more often than not comes out smiling. Henry Wilkinson

MUSCLE MEMORY Sew In Love Records // November 3rd From its bare piano-lead beginnings to the dark twisted eeriness of album closer Night Tales, Dems’ Muscle Memory is as thought-provoking as its particularly unsettling artwork. The South London trio adopt wonderfully weird electronic accompaniment with FX-laden guitar lines for a soaring falsetto to shine above, sitting them somewhere between Foals and SOHN. Lioness stands-out, as twitching vocal alterations - a cleverly utilised technique throughout the ten-track - bring further elements of discomfort before the track builds to its whirring, dance-rhythm climax. Never Have Never Will is a slowed-down sparse highlight too, which washes over with effortless beauty. Stunning at times, Muscle Memory has definitely been worth the wait for fans of this under-rated outfit, who join the growing rank of impressive British synth-led alt-poppers. George O’Brien LiS 21

iamamiwhoami words: rob leedham photography: john strandh
The Internet turned 25 this year and still very few musicians have figured out what to do with it. That makes Jonna Lee more than a little bit special. As the front-person for iamamiwhoami, she has created something entirely unique. An audiovisual extravaganza that was born five years ago through YouTube. “At that time, it wasn’t an arena for art or creatives,” explains the Swedish songwriter. “There were good music videos there, but people were using YouTube more for consumption like watching fun clips of drunk Russians. So putting something that has a high artistic value on there was kind of an experiment to see if it would stand out.” Even without the mystery of being posted from an anonymous account, you figure that iamamiwhoami’s channel would have found an audience. It’s not everyday you see a woman clad in tar-black paint and licking white goo from a tree trunk in pristine high definition. What’s more surprising is the scale of its success: 31 million views and counting. That's enough people to form a community, enough to fund a new album: BLUE. And so the third iamamiwhoami record was paid for by fans and created with complete independence. The process starts off with lyrics and script before expanding into all manner of mind-boggling imagery. Along the way, Jonna, Claes Björklund and her other collaborators control its production, manufacturing and distribution. If this process strikes you as a tad intense, then you’d be utterly correct. “It’s all we talk about, it’s all we think about, it’s all we do,” she reveals. “...My whole life is on the internet.” Watch the video for BLUE’s fountain and you’ll see why. Gorgeous aerial shots of coastline vistas are married to a semaphoreindebted dance routine that Lee performs while dressed in a see-through plastic body suit. It’s like a Kate Bush video with the surrealism amped up to eleven. Amazing, in other words. “Water is a symbol for the online world that we live in,” says Lee. “I feel like I started in the physical era and my head in this new world is like being stuck in water. Wanting to grasp these new opportunities of being a digital artist.” BLUE follows on from Jonna’s Kin and Bounty as a record with a distinct theme. It’s these epic visions of what pop should be that have allowed her to build such an adoring fanbase. One that documents her every artistic turn on an encyclopedic wiki website - even that time she performed at Way Out West festival on a bed of toilet paper.
LiS 25
What’s so inspiring about the bizarre, beguiling world of Jonna Lee is that those who follow it have bought wholesale into the project. They have made it more than the sum of one Swede’s escapist fantasies, and that’s a lot to take in. Especially when you’re dedicating three years of your life to each new creative cycle. “I’m constantly affected by how we’re received,” says Jonna. “I feel overwhelmed a lot of the time. I keep my expectations low, but the fact that it’s growing and a lot of people are very emotional about it.” Much like FKA Twigs’ cinematic vision of love and loneliness, iamamiwhoami can’t be embraced from a distance. It’s not a free download to your iPhone or a surprise release you can inhale and be done with. What’s required is your time, and that’s an investment that could be repaid with a funeral pyre. The project’s first ‘gig’ was streamed live on YouTube and saw one lucky fan seemingly burned alive in a coffin. This is how Lee interacts with her fans, with symbols instead of selfies. She doesn’t engage with Facebook or Twitter, everything that’s meant to be said is already there on YouTube. “We’re communicating in real-time with people that follow the project,” says Jonna. “I’m very aware of what people are experiencing. If you play a concert you get the same reaction, but verbally instead of emotionally.” It’s these contrasting extremes that make iamamiwhoami an ongoing fascination. Despite being made possible by technology, its videos are exclusively set in woodland and by waterfalls - places that have been left untarnished by Buzzfeed and Tinder.
Likewise for all the weighty subject matter Lee addresses, she’s got a wicked sense of humour. One of the most enduring moments of her debut live show was a lingering shot of someone dry-humping the forest around them. More seriously, you have to wonder whether Jonna has outgrown the album format. Especially since her music is just the foundation of what she does. “In my world the songs and videos are never separated,” she replies. “Some people don’t really care about the visuals. People have told me straight up that, ‘I’m not interested.’ I’m a very visual person but others are not.” Sometimes, it seems like you’ve got to wait for the world to catch up with your ambition. Make no mistake, Lee is a trailblazer through and through. In another 25 years, she may well be a curio. A quaint vision of the future when today’s record-tour-repeat cycle is obsolete. For the moment, she feels like a vital signpost towards what it could be. If only Jonna could explain what exactly she does for a living. Songwriting? Directing? Something else entirely. “I try to avoid that question,” she replies. “I find it very hard to explain.” One day soon, we’ll have an answer.
BLUE is released November 10th via To Whom It May Concern iamamiwhoami’s videos can be seen on YouTube at: youtube.com/iamamiwhoami A London show is set to be announced soon.
“It’s all we talk about, it’s all we think about, it’s all we do.”

EVENTS
a selection of new stuff we’re excited about: INDEPENDENT LABEL MARKET London’s Indie Label Market has become a mainstay of our music calender since 2011, bringing the best in independent labels together under the same roof, kind of like a farmer’s market for music. As people swarm throughout the stalls, searching for Christmas gifts, one-offs, and beautifully inventive releases you couldn’t even dream up, you’ll see just how much life and imagination there is left in this inspiring scene. There’s surprises at every corner, special appearances from bands, label bosses, cakes and mulled wine. Each of these biannual events has something new to offer, the perfect place to discover your new favourite band, and maybe even unearth some old ones too. With such a fantastic array of labels setting up shop, make sure you start saving now.

WINTERVILLE Okay, so this alternative winter wonderland starts in December, but we’re already getting excited to be at Winterville, a festive town taking over East London’s Victoria Park. Plus, we want to make sure you get those ice-rink tickets booked. Running for almost the entirety of December and boasting amongst other attractions a giant Ferris wheel, 600 square metres of ice rink (and a roller disco for those who prefer skates with wheels), a load of bars, an on-site pub, street food traders (hello Voodoo Rays), a craft beer area, a Christmas market and absolutely tons more. The thought of being wrapped-up warm, drinking hot booze and strolling round our favourite London park with all this going on is more than enough to banish any of the Grinch-like tendencies which can hit in December. December 2nd-31st // Victoria Park, E3 5TB Free entry with some events bookable in advance. @WintervilleLDN // winterville.co.uk LiS 30

photo by Hamburger Me! blog / @HamburgerMe
Exciting times ahead for Lucky Chip and anyone that treasures some of London’s very best burgers; the Lucky Chip van is heading to Dalston, opening five evenings a week and bringing a whole ton of fun with it. The guys spoke excitedly about the new burgers and specials that they’ll be serving, as well as the brand new soundsystem installed to keep us all dancing. Plus, get November 7th in your diary now, because they’re throwing a huge bonfire party with, get this, 300 free burgers and BYO fireworks. How’s that for a welcome to Dalston? Opens Oct 28th // Abbot Street, Dalston, E8 2JP @LuckyChip // lucky-chip.co.uk
JA JA JA FESTIVAL
Emiliana Torrini
Over the last five years the wonderful people at Ja Ja Ja have ensured we’ve seen so many of our favourite Nordic acts hit London. Working tirelessly to curate the best live events, we’re delighted that once again they’ll be hosting a festival packed with the best Nordic music, food and film - including a very special showing of Björk: Biophilia Live. For three days the likes of When Saints Go Machine, Emiliana Torrini, Highasakite and many more will grace the stages of two great venues. So come and soak up this beautiful culture. NIGHT TALES Old Street will see a huge transformation this month as Night Tales’ spectacular set-up appears in all its two-tier, cosy-seating, wild-garden, log-fire-warming, concept-bar-building glory. In what’s bound to be one of our favourite winter hangouts, every stop has been pulled out to create a truly unique and magical space to hide out in during frosty winter times. With so much of our favourite food and drink (Patty & Bun burgers, Morty & Bob’s grilled cheese goodness, Yum Bun’s delicious steamed buns) we’ll never want to leave. Opens Nov 14th // 288-299 Old Street // EC1V 9DP @nighttalesLDN // facebook.com/nighttalesLDN LiS 31

SYLVAN ESSO Oslo // October 2nd “Looks like London are leading the field in these weird venues,” laughs Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn. In fairness, they would know: he and Amelia Meath have already played the capital three times this year. Five months on, here they are, drawing a frenzied response from a sell-out crowd, and doing so with apparently effortless ease. Of course, the duo automatically gave themselves a huge head start when they created their deeply physical debut: songs like Play It Right and Dress practically jump out of the speakers and beg to be heard live. And while none of that kinetic energy is lost in translation tonight, what really makes Sylvan Esso such a ludicrously brilliant live proposition is the fact that the pair of them so patently love performing. They start with Hey Mami, perhaps the most perfect cross-pollination of Meath’s output with minimalist folk trio Mountain Man, and the experimental electronic compositions Sanborn makes as Made Of Oak. Beginning a capella, Meath lays down three-part harmonies which Sanborn loops over a slow handclap. Meath’s voice swoons uninterrupted over the jump-rope chant for a couple of verses, before Sanborn ushers in the jagged subs and hip hop beats, and the entire venue erupts. From here on in the duo do their damnedest to squeeze every last drop of energy from their album. For the serrated synth-pop of Dreamy Bruises Meath dances with her arms aloft and engages the audience in its call and response refrain, on Could I Be she’s body-popping, and during the frenetic

pogo of HSKT she ducks and weaves her way through the flashing lights. Tellingly, they’re every bit as engaging when the tempo drops and it’s the most subtle song of the set that really stands out; juxtaposing the warmth of Meath’s voice against flickering electronics, splintered acoustic guitar samples, and a rusty, clanking beat, Come Down makes a spellbinding finale. CARIBOU KOKO // October 8th It takes so long to get out of KOKO that, as you snake up the stairs, staring back at the very place you’ve just been stood, you have time to reflect on the show. Now its starkly bare wooden floorboards and scattered empty plastic pint glasses. Ten minutes ago it was a seething dance floor as Sun blistered for over fifteen minutes, wave after wave of propulsive percussion rising up euphorically just as you thought it had finished. Tonight is a master class in transforming new album Our Love from a subtly shifting beautiful electronic wash into extended versions of songs that build up and engulf you until all you can do is dance. Can’t Do Without You and the irresistible Odessa are the highest of highlights yet, in truth, it’s a euphoric show from start to finish. Danny Wright LiS 59

Re Est. 2014
BY KAREN PIPER I’ve spent a long time with music industry ‘think pieces’ under my nose, but recently, the blog ‘The Music Industry has 99 Problems. And they are…’ was the last straw. My ‘thought’ here isn’t about this blog, or article or even the author (though as an established ‘thought leader’ this feels like a bit of a clickbait cop out of a blog post), but more on the fact that it’s 2014 and the last thing a rapidly changing industry needs is another think piece about these ‘rapid changes’ – calling them out as faults and ‘problems’ instead of identifying the reality and opportunities. If you were to follow the logic of this or other similar ‘think pieces’, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the music industry should be immune to the economic ebb and flow of supply and demand, technology and the restrictions of revenue streams. The fact that someone is playing a Telecaster at one end of the financial flow chart makes people forget that this is an industry - meaning it’s often unfair and devoid of creativity, it can be fast-paced and lucrative, but at the end of the day it’s a business and comes down to economics. That might be a real vibe killer if you’re stuck in the replacement cycle of 1990’s CD boom, but it could be exciting if you care about music, art, talent, innovation and the future… or, dare I say, the present. Imagine if these ‘strategists’ spent less time talking about the ‘good old days’, and more time working out how Nokia made the jump from paper to cellphones – uncovering all sorts of weird and wonderful ways to make sure we’re all listening to U2’s Songs of Innocence for many years to come. Oh. LiS 61
