WELCOME I don’t know if it’s because the days are getting shorter, but I’m pretty sure time is going more quickly. That said, it feels like months ago that we launched our ace new website, when in reality only weeks have passed. If you haven’t had a chance to, please do take a look, it still makes me giddy with its prettiness... This month I'm over the freakin’ moon to have one of my favourite bands of all time on the cover, and suddenly the six hours it took for us to get to Cardiff to have a chat with them seems more than worth it. Grab a ticket to their show at Heaven and we’ll see you down the front. We’ve got more listings than ever in this issue because MY GOD are there ever a lot of gigs on this month, there’s something for everyone, so get stuck in.

SPECIAL REQUEST

Still unsure whether we’re supposed to believe that Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland fka HypeWilliams really have parted ways for good but if this is Inga moving on, we guess we’ll learn to live with it. Copeland has always been the more pop-inclined of the two, less blatantly sarcastic and meta, and ‘Fit’ once again proves that she doesn’t need DVA or Matyn to produce a brilliant pop tune.

Special Request is acclaimed house producer Paul Woolford going down nostalgia alley, shamelessly yearning for hardcore’s glorious past. This retromanic stance is surely open for criticism, but you can hardly argue with the guy’s skills and passion. Principal rave hauntologist Lee Gamble remixing a Special Request track of course takes things to almost criminal levels, but above all the result is pure sonic gold, a ghostly and uncanny masterpiece.

CASSIE

BALCONY (KAHN REMIX) There’s a serious Cassie obsession going on among Bristol’s Young Echo crew, and the producers’ messing around just turns out so much more compelling than the singer’s rather daft originals. Here, dubstep disciple Kahn turns ‘Balcony’ into a seductively grooving, inner city late night jam with some sinister twists. Perfection.

MORCEE

BLACK HOLE Featuring vocals by Funkystepz affiliate Lily McKenzie, Morcee’s ‘Black Hole’ is absolutely massive. The young London-based producer – real name Charlie Potter – may not yet be known to many, but he’s definitely one to keep an eye on. With its stripped down but irresistible beat, ‘Black Hole’ is nothing but addictive.

FOKUS GROUP

MUCKY CRACK FUNK Fokus Group is the new project by Ben Sims and Paul Mac. With the oddly titled ‘Mucky Crack Funk’, the duo are letting us know that the amen break is nothing to be ashamed of in 2013. The rest of the track is pure funk indeed, only in its most relentless form.

“I feel like the UK really needs a band. A pop band. Fabulousness. Accessibility.” Forgive the overuse of italics, but Rosie Blair enthuses a lot. Across our intermittently-glitchy Skype connection it quickly becomes clear that her default setting is ‘emphatic’, peppering her assertions with manic laughter and expansive hand gestures, and becoming equally animated discussing Miley Cyrus’ tongue as she is Robert Smith’s songwriting. It’s not surprising then that the Belfast-born singer confesses to being “defined by fandom”, though a religious upbringing in an LP-free

When you set yourself the task of writing something that contains hooks and observes certain structures, it’s hugely pleasing when you get it right.” And on ‘Boys Again’ they do just that: this is buoyant, big-hearted, 80s-influenced pop, which finds them referencing the elemental, new wave guitar textures of The Cure on ‘Yoai’ and recreating the endorphin rush of first love with manic yelps on ‘Heartbeat Overdrive’. Recording sessions have already begun for their debut album, so what can we expect? “Songs you can dance to and songs you can relate to. I self-identify as a feminist, so I’m fascinated by the female experience, and the ephemeral world of girls; that moment of being on

“WE’RE TAKING THE BEST OF LIVE GUITAR MUSIC AND MELDING IT WITH REALLY-FUCKING-GREAT POP HOOKS.” household meant music was scarce initially. “Something about me was always drawn to music so I’d sit listening to the radio, getting really excited about everything from iconic acts like The Smiths to 80s cheese like ‘Waiting For A Star To Fall’.” Her passion led her to follow a producer-friend to Berlin, before a chance encounter on the U-Bahn altered her course forever. Travelling home from a bar shift at 6am, she stumbled upon “this gorgeous boy” busking on the platform: Japanese-Brazilian guitarist Michel Collet. Blair approached him, they bonded over The Cocteau Twins and – with the addition of Louis McGuire on drums – together they formed Ballet School in 2011. As Blair explains, the quest to craft catchy melodies is their prime motivation: “I just love the mechanics and the discipline of pop music.

the precipice of innocence and experience.” And sonically? “It’s sounding quite… sexy. We’re taking the best of live guitar music and melding it with really-fucking-great pop hooks.” They’re not fazed by the prospect of pursuing a pop career on an indie imprint, either: “The [music] industry model is so flawed that there are no rules anymore. Look at Grimes: she’s at the interface of commercial pop and the purest of underground music. She’s a shape-shifter, like Julia in ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’, bringing a new set of ethics to the mainstream. We want our music to make everyone feel fucking good, until it reaches critical mass and kicks off. Because, really, it’s so much fun to be a fan of pop music, isn’t it?” Yes, yes it is.

Ballet School’s debut EP, ‘Boys Again’ is released via Bella Union October 21st. They play Old Blue Last November 6th.

WORDS: GEM SAMWAYS

H O LY G H O S T ! TA L E S F R O M T H E C I T Y. . . The year is 2004, George Bush is the President of the United states, and the words "social" and "media" have yet to collapse into each other. I was 21. Nick and I landed in London as part of a hip-hop group we started as teenagers, Automato. We were in town to play a concert at Return To NY, Arthur Baker's famous electroclash party. Those words - "electro" and "clash" - had most definitely collapsed into each other... There were six of us travelling with Automato when we landed on British soil. Six boys. Six lanky, goofy boys from New York City on their first trip to London to play a party called Return To NY. How fitting! Even then we travelled with a lot of equipment: tape echoes, electric pianos, vintage drum kits...oh, and did I mention SIX BOYS? We had enough man power to fill the starting line of a basketball team and still have one guy sitting the bench, ready to sub in. You'd think we would have learned to keep our overheads lower by now, but that's a story for another time. Back to this one: We landed at Heathrow to meet our tour manager, Jon, and piled into a sad excuse of a Sprinter vehicle. Off to the Holiday Inn lads! What happened after that...it's a little blurry...but here's what I can say definitely happened: 1. We played a concert. 2. We ate things we believed British people ate. 3. I met a girl. 4. Morgan, one of the six members, met his future wife. 5. There was an incident at French customs after officers found a joint in our tour manager’s cigarette pack. 6. Our vehicle broke down outside of London and we played tag in a field of neon-purple lavender. 7.... Well who really cares what happened? What I remember and what matters is how I FELT being in London for the first time. I was excited, ecstatic even, to be across the ocean in the motherland of so much music I loved. Radiohead, Blur, Aphex Twin, The Beatles, The Smiths, Badly Drawn Boy, Portishead, Squarepusher, Bloc Party, David FUCKING Bowie...they were all part of me already. And now here I was, age 21, in a band, in THEIR town to play a show with MY band. "This fucking rules," I thought, as I wandered aimlessly, sans-smartphone GPS, through London.

FUTURE OF THE LEFT WORDS: DANNY WRIGHT For their gloriously brutal new record ‘How To Stop Your Brain In An Accident’, Future Of The Left went to Pledge Music to ask fans to help fund it. Within five hours they had reached 100%. For those who had the faith, it’s money very well spent. It’s the sound of a band at the peak of their powers, balancing an exhilarating sense of experimentation with the essence of what makes them so thrilling – plus a healthy dose of Falco’s acerbic lyrics. We spoke to Falco and Julia from the band to discuss why they went down the Pledge route, the sound of the new album and adopting the voice of a “BBC newsreader from 1952” on one song. How happy are you with the new record?

Did starting your own label give you more freedom?

Julia: Oh, we’re thrilled with it – not just in terms of the songs, but also the overall sound. And putting it out ourselves has been really satisfying.

J: The freedom it gave us was on an operational level. It’s been hard work but the reward comes when you go ‘Hey, we did this ourselves and we did a really good job’.

Falco: I think this album, although it doesn’t fall too neatly into the trap, will be more easily appreciated by people who liked the band in the first place. It definitely flows more as one piece than the last record. Sonically as well, we listened to the vinyl last week, and it just sounds so present and rich.

F: There’s a certain size of band, which we probably are but only just, who can get away with it because there’s a certain devotion which I’m very proud to say some people have to our music. It means we can finance the making of the record, even though it’s not going to help us put a down-payment on a yacht.

“...BECAUSE SOMETIMES YOU’VE GOT TO HAVE SOME MEAT AND POTATOES TO ENJOY THE TUNA AND CUSTARD MORE APPROPRIATELY. ”

J: Right now for a band at our level getting signed is nearly impossible. We’re lucky that we can do it ourselves because of things like crowdfunding, which we weren’t originally into. So what changed your mind? J: We realised it’s how you approach it – we weren’t pitching ourselves to play people’s living rooms, we just said ‘Do you want to help with putting out the record?’ And were you surprised at how quickly you reached 100%? F: It spat on my nipples and introduced me to its mother, if I may invent an allusion. I don’t want to say it was a vindication but it was really heartwarming. People seem to have faith in this record and it will

repay that faith several times over. To focus on the album, where does the title come from? F: I wrote a song in 2006 called ‘How To Stop Your Brain in an Accident’. It was filed away and then all of a sudden with all of these songs there was a sense of trying to make sense of a chaos which just immediately seemed appropriate. Two tracks, ‘The Male Gaze’ and ‘Johnny Borrell Afterlife’, were taken from the earlier EPs – were they always intended to go on the album? F: Yeah, when a song’s strong enough it tends to make its own case. With the record there are traditional rock songs sandwiched in between ones which are a little bit more

multifaceted – because sometimes you’ve got to have some meat and potatoes to enjoy the tuna and custard more appropriately. One of the most intriguing songs is ‘Singing on the Bonesaws’ – where did that voice come from? F: It was just a decision taken in the moment. Like the first time you decide to try skiing and if you’re in Trinidad and Tobago tough, you’re just going skiing. Initially when I performed the lyrics I wasn’t sounding like a BBC newsreader from the 1952 – it just happened. Stewart Lee said he plays an exaggerated version of himself on stage and there’s something about that in any good art. If there was a caveat on everything you said you’d never get towards saying anything of

any critical use. Where did the voice come from? A deep illness, living inside my mind and belly. How’s the set working now with the mixture of songs? F: The set will pretty much always go: some guitar songs, some keyboard songs in the middle, then some other guitar songs and then a bloody big fuck around at the end. It’s just that the actual songs move round. Some people always want old songs and some people want just new songs and you have to find a middle ground to disappoint them all. ‘How To Stop Your Brain in an Accident’ is released via Prescriptions October 21st. The band play Heaven on November 13th. Read an extended version of this interview online at londoninstereo.com

POLIÇA SHULAMITH

Memphis Industries // October 21st

Second album syndrome is well documented; it's an obstacle standing in the way of so many. Luckily for Minneapolis's Poliça, they've shimmied past this obstacle in a blaze of glory. Following up 2012's

deservedly well-received debut, 'Give You The Ghost', was always going to be an arduous task, but in 'Shulamith' they have a record that comes across with much more urgency than their previous outing. As an album, it personifies their strengths much more than before. They showcase their more intense side with 'Vegas', but are equally comfortable attempting to make you dance with their gorgeous R&B in 'I Need $'. Channy Leaneagh constantly tries to seduce you with her effects-heavy vocals, and not even a guest appearance from Justin Vernon on 'Tiff' is able to dissuade your ears from staying attentive to her voice, as she floats from one song to the next. It can seem like quite a schizophrenic record, but it is in this lack of predictability that it finds its charm. There are only a handful of acts in the world who can make music this enticing, and fortunately for their lucky listeners, Poliça are one of them. Jack McKenna

SLEIGH BELLS BITTER RIVALS

Lucky Number // October 7th So grating and discordant that Joanna Newsom's wail seems comparatively angelic, Sleigh Bells have never been a pair to turn to casually. A 'fuck you' to sonic convention, the aesthetic remains: in ‘Bitter Rivals’, they've unleashed something straddling the line between brilliantly compelling and practically unlistenable. At times the aural equivalent of being taunted by Janet Street-Porter on a low-budget game show in the throes of a nightmarish salvia trip, it's in their less intense songs this collection shines - the Cults-ish ‘To Hell With You’, the frustratingly catchy ‘Young Legends’ and the, dare we say it, almost sweet ‘Love Sick’. Jack Urwin 22

ANNA CALVI ONE BREATH

Domino // October 7th Recorded in five weeks, as opposed to two and a half years, there’s a sense of spontaneity to Anna Calvi’s second LP that was lacking on her meticulously-crafted debut. Drenched in drama and infused with wild dynamics, this is an album of extremes, ranging from the caustic ‘Love Of My Life’ – its reverb-laden rock riffs and strangulated vocals redolent of ‘Rid Of Me’-era PJ Harvey – to the string-embellished, Ennio Morricone-esque ‘Sing To Me’. In lesser hands it could all become a bit muddled, but the prodigiously-talented Calvi balances chaos and calm, ugliness and beauty, strength and vulnerability, with seemingly effortless ease. Gem Samways

WOLF ALICE BLUSH EP

Chess Club // October 7th The first few tracks released by London four-piece Wolf Alice were fairly heavy, so the opener and title track of this EP comes as a bit of a surprise, beginning with haunting guitars and gentle vocals from Ellie Roswell as she asks “are you happy now?” The momentum builds into something absolutely gorgeous. Recalling The Smashing Pumpkins in places with their ability to make gentle, beautiful yet heavy songs, every track here has something different about it and leaves the listener wanting more; a great taste of what's to come, and I, for one, can't wait for the album. Emily Bruce

JANELLE MONÁE THE ELECTRIC LADY

Atlantic/Bad Boy // Out Now Not another wildly ambitious, technicolour, intergalactic, lesbian-themed sci-fi R&B concept album, you’re probably saying. But wait – Monáe has done it again. Building on 2010′s ‘The ArchAndroid’, over 19 songs and featuring Prince, Miguel and Solange, she delivers an album of dazzling variety. The spoken word radio skits disrupt the flow but this is Parliament, Sun Ra and Prince all melted together in the shine of the sun. ‘QUEEN’, featuring Erykah Badu, and ‘Givin’ Em What They Love’, with that man Prince, are shiny funk standouts. Slower, more soulful, tracks like ‘Victory’ and ‘It’s Code’, meanwhile, reveal a debt to Gladys Knight and Roberta Flack. Another adventure into her wonderful imagination. Danny Wright 23

TIM HECKER VIRGINS

CHVRCHES THE BONES OF WHAT YOU BELIEVE Virgin // Out Now Faced with a level of snowballing hype that would make The 1975 grind their teeth with envy, Glasgow's Chvrches wisely hunkered down and let the melee take its course. 'The Bones Of What You Believe', where it flies, concocts a really quite glorious backdrop of brightly twinkling synths and ricocheting melodies to wrap around singer Lauren Mayberry. That can be said of about two thirds of the album, particularly the singles and the splendidly careening 'Night Sky'. The remainder is pleasant, sure, but just not quite magical enough to stop you plummeting back to reality with a Pro Tools-enhanced thump. Tom Edwards

Kranky // October 14th In 'Ravedeath, 1972', Tim Hecker's erring towards the ecclesiastic was plain for all to see. Forming a tapestry of ambient hymnal pieces harking to a destructive crescendo, its acclaim gave a real life to Hecker's apparitional take on noise, and brought to light one of the most innovative producers of modern times. In 'Virgins', that tapestry takes a disjointed path to a new plain. Its brevity lies in much shorter pieces, which belie the power he truly holds. Those same Dropped Pianos that stood out so bravely in his previous output only highlight the meander through ‘Virgins’ as the stop-start nature of it all makes for a much more unintentionally trying listen. Will Grant

OF MONTREAL LOUSY WITH SYLVIANBRIAR

Polyvinyl // October 7th With ‘Lousy With Sylvianbriar’ Kevin Barnes hones in on his penchant for classic singer-songwriters, drawing on Dylan-esque influences whilst maintaining the hints of psychedelia that have gained the band such notoriety from their inception. A hypnotic tone runs for the duration, highlighted best by ‘Belle Glade Missionaries’, with its enduring guitar work, while ‘Colossus’ tells a horribly melancholic family tale beneath the typically harmonious vocal line. The Floyd-like hue of ‘Obsidian Currents’ provides a real album highlight whilst the brilliantly strange ‘Raindrop In My Skull’ (“On the TV there’s a Mexican horror film/It isn’t dubbed, I’m not really watching”) whimsically sums-up the albums’ languid feel. George O’Brien

BOTANY LAVA DIVINER (TRUE STORY)

Western Vinyl // October 29th The most incredible thing about Spencer Stephenson, AKA Botany’s, debut album is the vast range of influences he embraces. Taking from classical, R&B, electronic and tribal tones, he entwines them to create something very much his own. From the ethereal to the intense he completes every element with stuttering conviction. His penchant for found sounds is evident (no that's not your phone ringing), creating luxurious layers of intricate happenings. And this feels like Spencer’s aim here, with each track he creates an individual moment, surrounding you, absorbing you. Take it on a train journey, in the rain, and I defy you not to fall in love with it. Jess Partridge

MARIAM THE BELIEVER BLOOD DONATION

Moshi Moshi // October 7th A Google search for Mariam The Believer proves less than fruitful: There’s the odd review, the obligatory Facebook and Soundcloud pages, one site even coins the word “Witchcraft” to describe Mariam Wallentin’s sound. But this makes discovery of the former Wildbirds & Peacedrums vocalist’s new project all the more exciting. Throughout its thirteen song trajectory ‘Blood Donation’ evolves like a magical flower; casting thought between light and dark; organs drone, loops shimmer and the voice lifts us into a narcotic fix. Mariam has created the perfect trail of discovery, and surely one of the most underrated debuts of the year. Matthew French

CFCF OUTSIDE

Dummy // October 21st A lot can happen in four years, whether it’s an entire university degree or the premiere and finale of a middling-running US sitcom. It's also the stop-gap period between Montreal producer CFCF's debut and this, his second full-length release. In this time, electronic musician Mike Silver has shapeshifted through a series of concept EPs, now returning for the equally-varying 'Outside'. While he's not yet seemed to have settled on a definitive signature sound, this might prove to be to his advantage; with the record jumping from groove-laden synth-pop to ambient minimalism in a heartbeat, but - more importantly - refusing to ever settle. THE GOOD GIG PUB GUIDE TO...

KING’S CROSS

“Does anyone know a good pub to meet in around..?” It’s the question you see time and time again, but we’re here answer it; We've done the research, we care, we’re here to help with a new area every month:

THE QUEEN’S HEAD There are few vaster pub deserts than the vast pub desert around The Scala and Water Rats... Thankfully. The Queen's Head is no mirage and sits just minutes away from both those venues. It's what you might call 'a proper boozer', and it does proper boozer properly; all about great draft beers and as good as Ploughmans as you're likely to find anywhere; oh man, those pork pies... VOC

Tucked in behind Pentonville Road, nestled between a maze of office buildings and an array of stylish bars lies VOC. Stepping through its unassuming doors is like taking a step back in time to the 17th Century, more specifically in fact a 17th Century Punch House – after which it is modelled. An intricate cocktail menu reveals carefully crafted delights such as the White Port Tea – made with Harry Brompton's Ice Tea, Earl Grey and barrelaged Tanqueray with sweet vermouth for a refreshing twist on a classic. Going off-menu has its own rewards as a confident, friendly and knowledgeable bartender whips up a Breakfast Martini: Cointreau, Gin and Marmalade, this Savoy classic would make for one hell of a morning. 2 Varnishers Yard // N1 9AW // @VOCLondon

BRAIDS

Electrowerkz September 3rd Braids' album ‘Flourish // Perish’ is amazing; hands down one of the best of the year. How such a complex, beautiful piece of electronic mastery could possibly be translated to a live show boggled my mind all day before rolling into Electrowerkz to see their first London headline gig of the tour. Now a three-piece, old school friends Braids are another of Arbutus Records’ genius signings. There really must be something in the water in Montreal. With Austin Tufts on drums (both electronic and acoustic), Taylor Smith on synth, laptop and xylophone while providing backing vocals to Raphaelle Standell-Preston’s absolutely awe inspiring soprano lead, the band opened with ‘Amends’ to a transfixed crowd. This second album has been a real transition for the band and they 54

bravely played unknown new tracks as well as album favourites with energy, elegance and ease. Austin absolutely pounded down on his drum kit during ‘n Kind’ while Raphi, a picture of composure, produced a fire engine red guitar – confessing afterwards “I'm glad that we learnt that song, it's been a bitch to learn.” When she announced that the next song would be their last, the crowd booed in dismay. She apologised quietly then took back her apology as “it’s a Canadian thing to apologise all the time” before going on to explain how happy they are to be here and how much they’ve been looking forward to this show. For one so overwhelmingly talented her humble speech is disarming. As Braids close with ‘Together’ Raphi sings “I'm upset with myself.” Well no one else here is. Lucie Grace

POSTILJONEN

SUMMER CAMP

It’s a crying shame that at the debut London show of Swedish pop sensations, and saxaphone enthusiasts, Postiljonen, they were hindered by incredibly bad sound.

This time on a Sunday evening is normally spent in feverish anticipation for the antics of Adam and friends on Countryfile, so it's something of a relief to be dancing hard in a record shop to one of the brightest pop bands around. Old favourites like 'Ghost Train' still dazzle, but exceptional newcomers 'Two Chords' and 'Fresh' steal the show: Bigger, bolder and radiating with glistening confidence; they are a real pointer to where this band are at the moment. It's truly great to have Summer Camp back. Dave Rowlinson

Birthdays // September 10th

That aside, there was no way they were going to let us go home disappointed this evening. Awash with dance pick-ups and dreamy vocal talent, they approach every element with a ridiculous amount of enthusiasm, surely having the time of their lives. It’s impossible not to be swept away with it too. Jess Partridge

BY SIMON WILLIAMS When I was a younger man my local indie record shop in Walthamstow was called Small Wonder. That shut down and was replaced by another indie record shop called Ugly Child. Then that shut down and was replaced by a driving school, but that's not the point. Actually, perhaps it is. Nowadays the gently collapsing retail system means that, with the honourable exceptions of the Rough Trades, the regional indie network and the very odd hangdog HMV store, the local record emporium has gone the way of the ironmongers and the family butcher. True story: a couple of years ago I took my daughter to HMV in Bury St Edmunds and proudly showed her the handful of CDs lurking at the back behind the mounds of Playstation paraphernalia. Later on I asked her what she thought of her trip to the record shop. "That wasn't a record shop daddy," she chuckled knowingly, "it was a games shop!" That got me thinking: in the olden days records were sold in various establishments as a casual aside to the main business - Danny Baker famously used to get his pop discs in a woollen shop and for decades the chart hits of the day were never knowingly undersold next to the pick'n'mix and watering cans in Woolworths. Perhaps this is the way back for the music industry - let's get groovy singles in Greggs, killer cassettes in KFC, Domino's compact discs in Domino's...let's eat to the beat and take back that high street. Sausage rock'n'roll, anyone? 57
