Important Information The times shown for concert venues are when performances begin. The times shown for clubs are a good indication of when you can expect the music to begin, but remember that the doors usually open earlier, so get there early if you want a good spot. About two-thirds of the shows in the Festival sell out in advance, so we strongly recommend advance bookings. Full addresses and contact information for all venues is on our website. Please note, some venues may have age restrictions or may require food or drinks purchases on entry – please check with the venue before booking.

Some of the smaller venues have limited facilities for people with disabilities – please check with the venue before booking. The right is reserved to alter the advertised programme. This guide goes to press in August, so there are always a few changes during the autumn. Please check efglondonjazzfestival.org.uk for changes and updates. If you don’t feel you are treated well by any venue, please send an email to piers.mason@serious.org.uk so that we can try to put things right for other people.

Welcome

The EFG London Jazz Festival cherishes the unifying nature of jazz, taking strength from its creative force, allencompassing breadth and its interactions with a wide range of genres whilst retaining its uncompromising authenticity.

The power of jazz enables us to encounter stimulating experiences; helping us to map out what feeds, fascinates and inspires our emotions. It takes us on a journey where everyone can find their own path whilst still enjoying a peaceful coexistence. London offers a feast of music on any given day; so what makes just one day of a festival stick out? The festival is not merely an open buffet of options already available, it’s a carefully programmed showcase created to provoke thought and say something new.

One of the pillars of the festival’s creative ethos is to cherish and support women in music – demonstrated throughout our programming, mass participation projects and our residencies, as well as celebrating the recent positive developments in gender equality in jazz.

The festival celebrates the ever influential body of work of jazz giants and their ongoing legacies, showing gratitude to the gamechangers in jazz recording. This year we also celebrate the momentous anniversaries of two colossal labels: ECM and Blue Note.

The breath-taking UK jazz boom is one of the core themes of the festival. Our artistic partnerships with Total Refreshment Centre, We Out Here Festival, Boiler Room, Tomorrow’s Warriors and many more give profile to the fresh voices of the scene.

Wednesday 20 November GAZELLE TWIN + NYX: DEEP ENGLAND Southbank Centre / Queen Elizabeth Hall 7.30pm Replacing electronic tracks with human voice as source instrumentation, this collaborative performance channels the dizzying anxiety of post-truth Britain, morphing between a heightened and haunting seminal choir to an otherworldly distorted dreamscape of whispers and operatic chaos. The performance amplifies the layers, movement and liveness of original compositions from Gazelle Twin’s acclaimed album Pastoral, original NYX compositions and English pagan and sacred music. Gazelle Twin is a moniker for independent artist, Elizabeth Bernholz. Her musical output takes an unconventional approach to production and live performance, featuring changing personas, themes and multiple genres. NYX is a collaborative drone choir, re-embodying live electronics and extended vocal techniques. NYX reshape the role of the traditional female choir, testing the limits of organic and synthetic modulation to explore the spectrum of collective female voice as an instrument.

JOELLE LEANDRE Three-Day Residency

Café OTO, Dalston 7.30pm The French double-bassist, composer and vocalist collaborates with special guests: today, she joins forces with Matana Roberts.

‘There’s more focus on (Gazelle Twin’s) own unprocessed singing, brilliantly accompanied by NYX who are incredibly skilled technicians in their own right, merging visceral, scratching vocals with live electronic manipulation as they stand at their mixing desks. The layers of powerful, stinging voices, the costumes, the choreography and the strobe lights: the show has total command over its audience.’ (The Quietus)

VOCAL CLASSICS OF THE BLACK AVANTGARDE Southbank Centre / Purcell Room 7.45pm

AND IS PHI

Canada Water Theatre 8pm And Is Phi is a vocalist, writer, visual artist, whose practice is an eclectic merger of magic realism, prayer, and improvisation. She is a member of Steam Down collective, as well as the experimental future R&B project Sawa Manga.

Elaine Mitchener turns to the black avant-garde and to the overflow of experiment that occurred within improvised music, often springing directly from lived experiences of racial injustice. The repertoire consists of a number of seminal AfricanAmerican works drawn from the 1960/70s which combine vocals and text with experimental jazz forms and illuminate an occluded moment in American cultural history, when the avant-garde aesthetics of new jazz doubled as a metaphor for the imminent politics of civil rights. The line-up consists of a group of leading UK jazz musicians brought together by Elaine Mitchener: saxophonist and MD Jason Yarde, trumpeter Byron Wallen, pianist Alexander Hawkins, bassist Neil Charles, drummer Mark Sanders and poet Dante Micheaux, who will be re-interpreting music by Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, Joseph Jarman, and Jeanne Lee, amongst others.

With powerful artistry, her naturally prodigious talent is even stronger as the years pass—a feat capable only by the true elite of the musical world.’ Singer, guitarist, composer, drummer, and percussionist, Vinícius Cantuária is one of the pioneers of neo-Brazilian music. With a career building musical bridges between Rio and New York, and collaborations with artists like Brian Eno, Laurie Anderson, Arto Lindsay, Caetano Veloso, Brad Mehldau and Bill Frisell, his music keeps on evolving, keeping subtlety, melody, diversity and sophistication at its core. ‘If it’s bossa nova, Cantuária’s is a very 21st-century version: subtle electric and acoustic and sounds co-exist throughout’ (★★★★ Sunday Times).

Southbank Centre / Royal Festival Hall 7.30pm Masterful singer, banjo and fiddle player, blending American musical genres like gospel, jazz, blues and country. Joined by pianist and percussionist Francesco Turrisi.

RIVER COLLECTIVE

For almost two decades, pianist Danilo Pérez has been co-creating one of the most important bands of our time – the Wayne Shorter quartet, with which he has won all the key awards, visited every major festival and recorded albums like Beyond the Sound Barrier for Verve and Emanon on Blue Note. Following a dazzling career including collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Tito Puente and Wynton Marsalis and several Grammy nominations, Danilo has launched a new band. Global Messengers brings masters from musical traditions in Palestine, Greece, and Jordan to join his Panama roots. Farayi Malek (vocals), Vasilis Kostas (laouto), Layth Al-Rubaye (violin), Naseem Alatrash (cello), Tareq Rantisi (percussion), and Danilo Pérez use their talents to make an impression through beautiful melodies and strikingly syncopated rhythms. This Festival will give the European premiere of Danilo’s new work, commissioned by EFG London Jazz Festival, Detroit Jazz Festival, Jazztopad Wroclaw and the Telus Center Toronto. With this work Danilo Pérez observes how change and uncertainty in the social landscape can cause division. He believes music can provide an uplifting message and speaks of ‘recovering the function of the artist to redirect humanity in a positive direction.’

THE BLACK PERIL BY SOWETO KINCH EartH, Hackney 8pm

FEAT. MAKAYA M C CRAVEN JUNIUS PAUL MEMBERS OF LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

One year on from the Armistice declaration in 1918, episodes of civil unrest erupted across the western world. What should have been a moment of triumph and social cohesion, disintegrated into violent disorder and racial conflict. From Liverpool, Glasgow, Cardiff and South Shields and the ‘Red-Summer’ across the US, city streets were set ablaze by race riots. The Black Peril is a dynamic new work by Soweto Kinch, inspired by the sounds of ragtime, proto-jazz, West Indian folk music and the classical works of black composers of the period. It will revisit a time of momentous social change, also exploring connecting strands to modern forms of dance music including hip hop and trap. Breathing new life into historic and often neglected musical forms, the performance will feature a 14-piece jazz ensemble with some of the most skilled performers of the UK jazz scene, players from the London Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago jazz giants Makaya McCraven and Junius Paul as well as dance choreographed by rising star Jade Hackett, and visuals of news footage and film archive from 1919. It’s a powerful artistic reflection on this 100-year history of racial conflict – exploring cultural anxieties, which in many ways are just as prescient in today’s world. This premiere of this new work is co-commissioned by Serious, London Symphony Orchestra and University of Hull, and supported as a part of Help Musicians UK’s Giant Steps scheme, Cockayne Grant for the Arts and Arts Council England.

ART BLAKEY CENTENARY As we celebrate the centenary of Art Blakey’s birth, the Festival has two special events at Cadogan Hall honouring his legacy – an afternoon concert by Jean Toussaint and an evening concert led by Ralph Peterson Jr.

Saturday 23 November

TIM GARLAND + ROYAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC ENSEMBLE

JEAN TOUSSAINT

Cadogan Hall 5pm Grammy-winning saxophonist Jean Toussaint, voted Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2019 Jazz FM Awards, first came to prominence when he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1982. In this concert, he’ll be playing with a cracking band featuring Byron Wallen on trumpet, Dennis Rollins trombone, pianist Andrew McCormack and a rhythm section of Daniel Casimir on bass and Shane Forbes on drums. His new album Live at the Jazz Cafe develops the fusion of Jazz Messengers soul and calypso spice. Art Blakey used to say “it doesn’t matter how complex you want to play, as long as you swing and play from the heart” then he’d cite John Coltrane as an example. I owe it all to the great Art Blakey and I’ll be a Jazz Messenger for life.” (Jean Toussaint)

RALPH PETERSON: The Messenger Legacy

Cadogan Hall 8pm Drummer Ralph Peterson Jr. assembles an all-star group to pay tribute to The Jazz Messengers, the prolific big band collective led by his mentor, the late Art Blakey. Marking the 100th year of Blakey’s birth with selections from a new recording, The Messenger Legacy will feature Peterson on percussion, saxophonists Bobby Watson and Bill Pierce, bassist Essiet Essiet, pianist Geoffrey Keezer and trumpeter Brian Lynch. Peterson was an emerging musician chosen to play by Blakey in the 1983 version of The Jazz Messengers’ two-drummer Big Band. Having learned first hand from the man himself, Peterson remained the second drummer in the Big Band until Blakey’s passing. This group of musicians wishes to preserve, protect and honour the legacy of an artist who was much more than a bandleader to them all.

Southbank Centre / Clore Ballroom 6pm FREE The Royal Academy collaborates with saxophonist and composer Tim Garland. They will celebrate Tim’s releases on Edition with special big band versions of tracks from ONE, Weather Walker and Return To The Fire.

DAN TEPFER Natural Machines

WITH

DAWN OF MIDI BAU.HAUS.KLANG DANIEL BRANDT’S ETERNAL SOMETHING

Kings Place / Hall One 7pm In an exceptional melding of man and machine, Dan Tepfer uses the Yamaha Disklavier piano to bring together his world-class pianism with his background in physics and programming.

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of a revolution in the philosophy of aesthetics. Not just around architecture and design, but in art forms such as film, dance and visual arts. Bauhaus with its values of minimalism, functionality and liberal modernism continues to be influential. Following its astounding Berlin premiere in January, composer and pianist Michael Wollny challenges how Bauhaus manifesto could be translated into today’s sound. The pianist plays opposite the mechanics of the ‘phonola’, a music machine from 1920’s that operates a second grand piano programmed by Wolfgang Heisig. Improvisation versus composition, organic versus structural, presents a field of tension accompanied by Émile Parisien (saxophone), Leafcutter John (electronics) and Max Stadtfeld (drums) ‘playing’ the materials of the Bauhaus – wood, glass, metal, clay, stone and fabric – and the wild dance music of the legendary Bauhaus Orchestra. The event continues with a musical response to the movement from Berlin-based Daniel Brandt’s Eternal Something and the minimalist trio Dawn of Midi from Brooklyn, whose special sets are presented in association with Erased Tapes. Percussionist Brandt Brauer Frick balances modern classical and dance music with Eternal Something. Dawn of Midi’s technical virtuosity and the meticulous harmonic texture is the immaculate soundtrack to this Bauhaus cosmos. This evening is created around the Bau.Haus.Klang project commissioned by the Bauhaus Festival – a celebration for the opening of the Bauhaus 100-year activities in Germany.

The Festival’s flagship mass participation project returns for 2019, this year with an all-female creative team and all female ensemble. She Is Jazz is a free performance project for womxn (self-identifying as female and non-binary people), led by Cassie Kinoshi and featuring guest artists such as Chelsea Carmichael and Emily Dankworth. Details of how to take part can be found on the Festival website (the deadline to sign up is 15 October!), otherwise join us for the performance on the Clore Ballroom on Saturday 16 November. For those passionate about singing, Serious Sing is an opportunity to explore vocal techniques and sing alongside others under the tuition of jazz singer Joanna Eden. Over the course of two hours, singers will work towards a performance in the Kings Place Foyer ahead of the evening’s performances. If you’re looking to try something new, our free bespoke beatboxing masterclass with former world champion Bellatrix will challenge you to try a efglondonjazzfestival.org.uk

Workshops take place on 16-17 November and 23-24 November giving new jazz and improv writers a valuable opportunity to work with professional journalists to improve their writing skills, develop an understanding of the scene, as well as getting to see a bunch of great concerts! Talent Development Stepping into tomorrow today.

John Coltrane’s Giant Steps is a landmark 1959 composition that has since become a symbol of innovation. The title is now fittingly used by the EFG London Jazz Festival as a platform for new works by established artists who are pushing the creative envelope. This year the award-winning Birminghambased saxophonist, composer and rapper Soweto Kinch and the inspiring vocalist, violinist, composer and arranger Alice Zawadzki are the incumbents, and present two very different projects that reflect the great strength of the UK jazz scene. Kinch’s The Black Peril is a daring musical treatise on the race riots that rocked British cities in 1919 while Zawadzki’s Within You Is A World Of Spring is an ambitious large-scale orchestration of her new album. 60

Hotly anticipated as those two premieres are, audiences can look forward to a wealth of other concerts that showcase talent found the length and breadth of the land, many of whom have come through Serious’ prestigious Take Five talent development programme. The young London scene is of course well represented with artists such as Cherise Adams-Burnett, who recently won the prestigious Jazz FM Vocalist of the year award, Cassie Kinoshi’s Mercurynominated SEED Ensemble, saxophonist Camilla George, bassist Daniel Casimir and trumpeter Emma-Jean Thackray making several appearances across the whole festival. But it’s not just a London affair, with the mighty guitar-saxdrums ensemble Roller Trio representing the creative hotbed in Leeds, while Scottish drummer Seb Rochford – formerly of Polar Bear fame – presents his new group, Pulled By Magnets. efglondonjazzfestival.org.uk

The importance of Tomorrow’s Warriors to British jazz can be felt throughout the festival, with their Nu Civilisation Orchestra featuring young trumpet sensation Ife Ogunjobi and StringTing coming together with Matthew Barley and the BBC Concert Orchestra to perform a new cello concerto written by Misha Mullov-Abaddo, as well two showcases of some of their most exciting emerging artists in the Barbican and Royal Albert Docks. All of the above make music that draws on a wide range of vocabularies from the deep well of African-American, African, Caribbean and European traditions, both acoustic and electric, reminding us that what is known as jazz remains a springboard for an individual’s vision as well as understanding of the art form’s fearless masters. These artists are ready, willing and able to make a leap of faith. Kevin Le Gendre
