What’s it all about? One Campus, One Community (OCOC) is our exciting multi-million pound project to unify the entire London Met community on one vibrant campus in Islington for the first time in the University’s 170-year history. Inspired by student feedback that expressed a desire for enhanced facilities and a stronger sense of community, we’ve launched a series of projects as part of OCOC to invest in brand new teaching and learning facilities, innovative technology, staff workspaces and the general transformation of the campus. The purpose of OCOC is to transform and enhance the overall experience of students and staff while strengthening links with the local community. This is a truly exciting new chapter in London Met’s history that provides us with the opportunity to cement our status as a modern university that meets the needs of its time.

What’s happening now? Over the next few years we’ll see a number of exciting changes and upgrades to our facilities. We’ve recently created inspiring new facilities for The Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design in Calcutta House, Aldgate. At our Islington campus we’re taking a phased approach to development. We plan to develop the campus in stages to keep any potential disruptions to an absolute minimum. Renovation works have already begun in many areas of the University and we’re quickly progressing with our plans to install cutting edge technology that will positively impact all areas of the student experience.

A brand new teaching and learning centre The renovation of J Block J Block is a two-storey building that stands at the heart of our Islington campus. By summer 2019 we’ll transform J Block into a four-storey teaching and learning centre, with 25 teaching rooms and a variety of social learning spaces. Each room will have a diverse range of connected study commons spaces designed to facilitate both independent study and group work activity. All classrooms in the centre will be fitted with the latest teaching technology and various modern furniture types to enable students to work flexibly. The centre will also host a large café with the capacity to seat over 200 people, and will be accessible from a brand new public square.

Three floors of brand new teaching and learning spaces The renovation of C Block C Block is an area of our Islington campus that used to be occupied by support staff. We’re converting it to create three floors of brand new teaching and learning space. Feedback from students and staff in relation to our Strategic Plan 2015–20 called for the transformation of the learning experience and classroom design features. We’ve therefore designed world-class suites with differing capacities, with the latest innovative teaching technology and furnishings to enhance the classroom experience. Students and staff will benefit from brand new facilities designed to accommodate the large variety of teaching and learning styles we have at London Met. Works on C Block have already begun and we’re expecting it to open to students in early 2018.

A new central space The transformation of the courtyard We’re creating a new public square at the heart of our Islington campus, transforming and expanding what is currently known as the courtyard. We want to enhance the experience of our students, staff and local neighbours so this central space will be an inspiring plaza that is welcoming, safe and accessible to members of the public. Appointed to design the square is the renowned landscape architecture practice Gustafson Porter + Bowman, whose work includes the Woolwich Squares in Greenwich, the Swiss Cottage Open Space in Camden, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in London’s Hyde Park, and the redevelopment of Nottingham’s Old Market Square – winner of 13 awards including a Civic Trust Award and the RIBA CABE Public Space Award. The practice has worked with students, staff and the local community to create what promises to become an Islington landmark.

A new home for London Met’s Students’ Union The renovation of our Harglenis building As part of our One Campus, One Community project, we’ve invested £1m in the creation of a new home for our Students’ Union (SU). By the end of 2017 London Met’s SU will relocate to Harglenis – a prominent stand‑alone building located on our Islington campus. Plans for the SU’s newly refurbished home include new office spaces, committee and meeting rooms, and a brand new radio booth for the Union’s Verve Radio station. The building will be equipped with a new kitchen, advocacy rooms, digital screens and a disabled restroom facility to ensure accessibility. We’re creating an energetic, student-led space for the SU that is visible and far more advanced to facilitate the wide range of SU activity taking place throughout the year. We want students to have a flexible, student-inspired space to call their own.

The new Highbury Canteen The transformation of Enrico’s Kitchen We’re introducing an improved catering outlet at our Islington campus, transforming what was previously known as Enrico’s Kitchen into the new Highbury Canteen. The new food hall will open in the C Block area of the campus in early 2018. We want to provide our students and staff with a large modern refectory that is easily accessible and conveniently located for anyone working or studying in the C Block area. Designed by Bond Bryan Architects, the Highbury Canteen will feature a new coffee shop and seating area. Students and staff will benefit from a brighter, more exciting refectory offering an enhanced menu with a larger variety of food options.
