Student services Visas Moving to London to study is exciting but there is a lot to organise before you set off. You may need a visa in order to travel to the UK. It is important that you choose the correct visa route based on your main purpose for visiting and the length of your chosen course. It isn’t possible to study on a standard visitor visa so you should obtain either a Tier 4 student visa or a short-term study visa. The standard visitor visa is the appropriate visa if you need to come to the UK to attend an interview for a place on your course at London Met but it would not allow you to remain in the UK to start your studies. If you’re coming to study with us for longer
20
than six months and you’re a national of a country outside the EEA and Switzerland, you will need to obtain a Tier 4 (General) student visa. Please note, the Tier 4 (General) visa route is mainly for full-time courses, though some part-time courses may also be permissible. If in doubt, please contact our International Advice team by emailing adviceinternational@londonmet.ac.uk. You may also seek advice on the visa application process, working in the UK during your studies, including what types of work are allowed, as well as bringing dependants with you. You can find out whether you need a visa to study in the UK by visiting the UK Home Office website: gov.uk/check-uk-visa
Before applying for your visa
Immigration Health Surcharge
• If you need a Tier 4 visa for your course, you need to first obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter.
From October 2020, an Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £470 per year is applicable if you’re studying a course that is longer than six months. The fee applies per 12-month period of your visa. This entitles you to use the National Health Service (NHS) at no extra cost during your stay in the UK. You can find out more information about this on our website.
• Our immigration team will be able to support you and answer your questions about obtaining a CAS and you will be notified by us when you can request it. • Please note that requests for CAS letters can only be made three months before the start date of your course for the semester you are joining. • Find out more about applying for a visa and requesting a CAS at londonmet.ac.uk/tier-4-visa
