Staff profile

Sunny Singh, course leader for BA Creative Writing, internationally acclaimed writer of fiction and creative non-fiction and journalist. Sunny, what do you enjoy most about working at London Met? Teaching! London Met attracts an incredible diversity of students from all over the world and BA Creative Writing attracts an incredible amount of talent, from unusual and non-traditional backgrounds. It is an incredible privilege to have a role in nurturing and developing that talent, but also to have a part in training minds to question, think, research. For me, education is fundamentally about creating citizens who are able to examine and think critically and it is amazing to be part of that process. Your new book, Hotel Arcadia, will be published in March 2015. Tell us a bit about your writing, past and present… I have been publishing since I was 15 and am currently working on a non-fiction project and have another book in the final stages of editing. I also write for the stage although I find watching my work being performed really nerve-wracking. I write mostly in English, but also in Spanish and Hindi, and will sometimes translate my own work between the three languages. Having said that, I prefer to write in English because it

reaches a larger audience, both in India (where I am from) and in the rest of the world. My international and diverse background informs my teaching and interactions with students as I not only bring in my experience in writing but also in publishing, translations and journalism into the classroom. How ‘creative’ do students get to be on your course? The course focuses on achieving a balance of creativity, craft and discipline that is necessary for a writer. I believe in Chuck Close’s advice that the ‘best ideas come out of the process, from the work itself.’ So students are encouraged to unleash their creativity, but also to develop the discipline of writing on a daily basis, and taught methods to continue honing their craft on their own. We are located, rather fortuitously, in London so all sorts of arts, daily life and culture play a part in the course: theatre, museums, historical documents, architectural heritage all contain potential inspiration and we teach students how to draw on all these for their work.

Interested in studying creative writing or English? We offer the following courses: // BA Creative Writing (p.101) // BA Creative Writing and English Literature (p.101) // BA English Literature (p.102)

Local London

London Met’s hubs are situated in some of the most exciting areas of the city: Aldgate, Moorgate and Holloway. When you study with us, you’ll get to experience, and become part of, the vibrant local communities surrounding us. Outside of lectures and study, our students take advantage of the buzzing nightlife in east London, cheap eats in Hackney and Dalston, live music in Camden as well as the museums, galleries and theatres dotted all over the city.

Amazing eats If you’re based at our Holloway hub, head down to Upper Street – with a wide range of eateries, you definitely won’t go hungry. Try Pho for cheap Vietnamese, Chilango for spicy burritos and Gallipoli for delicious Turkish tapas. Haggerston is full of cheap eats and we can wholeheartedly recommend Tonkotsu East for its excellent ramen noodles and urban location under the arches. London is all over nomadic dining at the moment – pop-up food stalls and trucks have been appearing at events such as Street Feast serving up cheap, fast and amazingly tasty food. Check out their website to find the latest location. Top tip: Bao makes the most incredible Tawianese buns, ever!

Great nights out Students are spoilt for choice when it comes to clubbing in east London. Queen of Hoxton, 93 Feet East, Shoreditch Butchery and Vibe Bar all pull in some great DJs. Drink, Shop, Do – A kitsch bar serving cocktails in teapots and hosting lego building nights, the bar and new club downstairs is packed at the weekend. Get here early! Comedy is a great antidote to a hard week of lectures and you can see some great acts at The Camden Head (for free!) or the likes of Nina Conti, Bridget Christie and Alex Horne at The Invisible Dot, a small venue tucked away in King’s Cross.

A little bit of culture Located in Shoreditch, Rich Mix is the place to go for exhibitions, films, live music and events. With student discount available, you won’t feel guilty about going to the Indian Film Festival, or for enjoying a performance from award-winning theatre company, Tamasha. The Barbican – see all the latest films at one of this venue’s recently refurbished screens (only £5 for students on Tuesdays) or challenge your perceptions of art at a Curve Gallery exhibition. If you’re after cheap books, pop into The Book Warehouse or the Oxfam Bookshop on Upper Street – they’ve got plenty of great fiction for just a few pounds, and plenty of student cookbooks!

Local London Our top London tips If you’re into vintage clothing, east London will be like heaven. On and around Brick Lane you’ll find trendy shopping spots such as Blitz London, Rokit, Hunky Dory Vintage and Beyond Retro. If you’re on Holloway Road, head to Revive for awesome secondhand bargains. Music fanatics can catch free gigs at Rough Trade near Brick Lane and browse their huge vinyl collection for hours on end… Regent’s Canal is lined with lively cafes, bars and shops – walk along the river path at the weekend for some fresh air or enjoy a beer in a rowing boat (yes, they’re anchored) at Crate Brewery near Hackney Wick.

Where are your campuses located? Holloway London Met’s university buildings in north London sit opposite Holloway Road tube station, which is served by the Piccadilly line. The hub is also close to Highbury & Islington tube and railway station. Aldgate Our Aldgate hub is located minutes from Aldgate and Aldgate East tube stations, served by the Circle, Metropolitan, District, and Hammersmith & City lines respectively. Mainline railway stations, Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street, are a short walk away. Moorgate

Around town Head south of the river for an evening spent in buzzing Peckham. Crowds start the night at Bar Story and continue at the Bussey Building – open until 5/6am, technically you’ll end the night in the morning, just in time for a fry-up on Rye Lane. Wild and sprawling, Hampstead Heath is the perfect place to go for a run. On hot summer days, cool down with a dip in the pond and get back to nature.

Situated in the heart of the City, our Moorgate campus can be reached by tube or rail. Moorgate tube station is served by the Northern, Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines while Bank, served by the Central line, is just minutes away. Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street are the closest mainline railway stations. Find your way to our campuses using Transport for London: tfl.gov.uk

The Wellcome Collection is home to some of London’s more bizarre exhibitions and lectures and aptly describes itself as ‘the free destination for the incurably curious’. Head down to Euston where they’re located and prepare to expand your mind!

Getting involved

Challenge the way you see yourself and the world around you. There are loads of ways to get involved with university life at London Met; after all, it’s not all about studying and exams. Getting involved in a society, taking up a new sport, or joining a campaign is a great way to make new friends and will complement and challenge what you learn in the classroom. Wherever your interests lie, taking part will also boost your career prospects by adding value to your graduate profile – potential employers are always interested in hearing about the kinds of things you were involved with at university.

Rocket complex We host a range of student events at our fantastic Rocket Complex at our Holloway hub including: club nights, fresher and student society activities, movie nights and charity events.

With pool tables, plasma screens, a PS3, great sound-system and a courtyard garden, it’s also a great place to chill out when you’re not in lectures. Events at the Rocket include: // International Students Party DJs, bubbly and nibbles, dancing ’til late and guest appearances from the likes of Jamie Raven, mind reading magician. // Back Room Cinema New movie screenings with free entry, free popcorn, comfy sofas and cheap drinks. Recent films include World War Z and The Wolverine. // Summer Ball In previous years we’ve had special appearances from the likes of Tinie Tempah, Roll Deep, Jodie Connor and Hotsteppa.

“ Being part of the Students’ Union gave me the chance to get involved with different societies and faculties while meeting new people from all backgrounds and courses. Being part of the management body of the university also enabled me to participate in university on very different levels, which I have enjoyed very much. It has been a privilege to find a way to give back to London Met!” Maryam Saberi, international students officer at the Students' Union 17

Jana Jankova

“ As president of the Business Society I had to deal with challenges such as how to get students actively involved...and how to communicate my ideas and vision. I definitely gained an increase in self-awareness and I am grateful for that experience.

18

Student profile

Jana Jankova, former president of the Business Society, final year BA International Business Management student and marketing researcher at Visiongain Jana, what made you choose to study at London Met? I chose the University because of the position of campuses. I was working at City Road; just 15 minutes walk from the Moorgate campus. My employer allowed me to change to a part-time role and to fit my working hours to my school timetable. Only the fact that I could quickly shift from the school to my job and vice versa allowed me to both study and work. What did you enjoy most about your course? To study BA International Business Management in such a multicultural and diverse environment was a wonderful experience. I also valued how lecturers interacted with us during workshops. As well as working part-time, you were also president of the Business Society at London Met. What did that role involve and what kinds of skills did you gain from the experience?

The role involved organising events for students and leading the team of members on the society’s board. I had to deal with challenges such as how to get students actively involved, how to enhance motivation and creativity within them, and how to communicate my ideas and vision. I definitely gained an increase in self-awareness and I am grateful for that experience. Further, I realised how important internal communication is within any organisation or institution. Finding the right internal communication strategies and tools has become my passion. What is your career plan for after graduation? The next step is to find a new job, preferably in internal communication, PR or marketing. I wanted to start-up my own business during my studies and I have not given up this idea. I strongly believe that it would be very useful to apply my actual learning and the wise advice of my lecturers directly to the business process.

Interested in joining a student society? Head down to the Students’ Union to see what societies are on offer, or if you’ve got a great idea, you could start up your own.

Getting involved

Students’ Union

Student societies

An independent, democratic organisation, London Met Students’ Union voices the views and concerns of our students on a range of issues relating to the University and the wider community.

Musician Society, Nordic Society, Oxfam Society, City Investment Society, Socialist Worker Society, The CASS Art Feminist Society, Midnight Writers Society, LGBT – there’s a whole range of clubs to join at London Met, but if none of these catch your eye, it’s always possible to set up your own.

Each and every student has the opportunity to stand and be elected, so if you’re keen to gain experience of working for a large and influential organisation, or would like to help make key decisions about the University, joining the Union is a great way to do so. The SU is also the place to go for student societies, social events, NUS cards, setting up campaigns, and independent advice on a range of issues. londonmetsu.org.uk

Student magazine and radio station Verve Magazine and Verve Radio form London Met’s very own media hub. Tune in online to listen to The Monday Mix or Rock ‘N’ Regga, or pick up a copy of Verve magazine to find out the latest news and reviews. Staffed by students, both teams are always on the lookout for new talent. Get involved by offering your services as a journalist, graphic designer, DJ, researcher or technical assistant.

Sports Joining the rugby team or taking up Aikido isn’t just about getting fit; it’s also a great way to have fun, make new friends and gain excellent teamwork skills. Football, basketball, cheerleading, squash, cricket, badminton, tennis and volleyball are just a few of the sports in which you can participate. Some of our teams also represent London Met in the British Universities College Sports (BUCS) championships. We also run a number of fitness classes including Parkour, Zumba, Pilates and Boxfit. Our facilities are excellent and include: gyms at both hubs with state-of-the-art cardio vascular equipment; a full-sized basketball court complete with scoreboard; dance studio; and fitness studio. londonmetstudents.com

“ Best advice for anyone coming to London Met would be to join a sports team; in my opinion, the rugby team!

22

Student profile

Mohammed Giaffar, vice-captain of London Mets rugby team and student at the Faculty of Business and Law What do you enjoy about playing rugby at London Met? Absolutely everything! It gives you a great sense of community…Best advice for anyone coming to London Met would be to join a sports team; in my opinion, the rugby team – for its competitiveness, socialising, networking, camaraderie and most importantly, enjoyment. It also gives you a break from a mundane life of just studying while providing new opportunities in places you’d never expect. How often do you train and do you need any prior experience to join?

Has the team competed in many competitions? We generally try to focus on the league but we do go on tour each year and there are competitions that are a lot of fun. For example, this year we’ll be in Spain playing and socialising. Moreover, with the players being affiliated to other club teams, most months we do get opportunities to attend and play in competitions all over the south of England. Do you socialise with the team outside of practice? Socialising is one of the most important aspects of our team and plays a huge role in our successes. The memories of socialising with such a great group of people have to be some of my best, inside and outside of university and will surely stick with me throughout my life.

No prior experience is needed, primarily because at training we focus on all aspects of the sport, both beginner and advanced levels. This makes it easy for anyone to join and improve. In fact, this year some of our best players hadn’t ever played before. We usually train once a week but if people fancy it, it can be anywhere up to three times.

Interested in playing rugby? Come along to meet us at the freshers’ fair or visit the website for more information on sports at London Met. londonmetstudents.com

Nick Francis

“ As well as being a student ambassador I am project managing a Million Makers Project which is a month long fundraiser for The Prince’s Trust, I’m social and networking manager for London Met Entrepreneurs, as well as a member of the London Met Business Society.”

24

Student profile

Nick Francis, student ambassador and first-year Business School student Nick, what does being a student ambassador at London Met involve? Working as an ambassador for London Met has so far involved working at many of its great open events by representing the university to prospective students. It’s a great job and I would recommend it to anyone looking to join London Met. There aren’t a lot of jobs where you can work and genuinely enjoy what you’re doing, but this is certainly one. It’s a great way to keep busy, meet new people and earn money, all at the same time.

Why did you choose to study at London Met? I chose to study at London Met because it was one of the few universities around London to offer the course I wanted to study, and being that London is considered very big for both its music scene and business economy, it was a no brainer that I needed to be here to study BA Music Industry Management.

Have you been involved with any other activities around the university? Where to start! As well as being an ambassador I am project managing a Million Makers Project which is a month long fundraiser for The Prince’s Trust, I’m social and networking manager for London Met Entrepreneurs as well as a member of the London Met Business Society. There’s loads going on here but these are the things which interested me the most.

Want to be a student ambassador? As well as helping out at open events, you could be visiting local schools and colleges to raise the aspirations of students from underrepresented backgrounds by talking about your university experience, or actively assisting them through longterm interventions such as the Peer Mentoring project and the Upward Bound Programme. What’s more, our ambassador positions are paid and look great on your CV. For more information, visit: londonmet.ac.uk/ambassadors

Alexander Mueller, Austrian-born BA Furniture and Product Design graduate, furniture designer and maker, designer-in-residence at The Cass and winner of ‘Heal’s Discovers’ design competition 2013 What was behind your decision to do a furniture and product design course at London Met? I moved to London especially to study at London Met. London is at the forefront of design and The Cass is situated perfectly within the creative centre of east London. London Met also has a great workshop space, a hands-on approach to studying and an amazing history with the London College of Furniture. Did you do any work experience while studying for your degree? I believe that especially in the design industry it is vital to do as much work experience as possible. I did several internships and in my final year I could accredit one of my internships as part of my coursework. There are some things university can’t teach you so it’s important to get yourself out there and apply the skills you learn in your chosen work environment.

You recently won a big design competition with Heal’s – what’s it like working with such a prestigious company? Heal’s is one of the leading companies in contemporary design with an amazing heritage, so I just feel incredibly honoured being able to work with such a prestigious company so shortly after graduating from my course. Working with Heal’s has been an incredible learning curve and taught me so many things. After winning the competition I have now been asked to work on a range of furniture.

Student loans

Is it worth it in the end?

If you study full-time, you can apply to Student Finance England for a loan to cover your course fees and a maintenance loan to help with your living costs. Part-time students can also apply for a tuition fees loan.

We think so, but don’t just take our word for it: People with degrees earned an average of £12,000 a year more than non-graduates over the past decade, statistics show. (BBC website, April 2011)

You don’t have to pay any of these loans back until you have finished your course, and are earning £21,000 or over.

When you balance the cost of tuition fees against the higher employment and earning potential of having a degree it’s easier to think of it as an investment.

Course-based bursaries Bursaries are also available for a few of our courses (through the NHS Business Services Authority) – see BSc Dietetics and Nutrition (p.107) or BSc Social Work (p.128).

Your earning and employment potential with London Met is assured – London Met is the number 1 modern university for UK graduate starting salaries (Sunday Times University Guide, 2013).

Grants

How do I pay?

You can also apply for extra grants that you don’t have to pay back. These depend on your circumstances, and range from a means-tested maintenance grant, to a childcare grant if you are bringing up children, a disabled students’ allowance, and an adult dependent’s grant. Find out more at www.gov.uk/studentfinance.

All students need to pay half their tuition fees on their first day – if you have a student loan, your fees are paid directly by the Student Loans Company – you just need to show proof of this when you enrol. If you are paying your own tuition fees, then after you pay the first half, the rest can be paid in instalments up to three months after your course starts, either online or in person in a range of ways.

36

Student profile

Jason Jackson, BSc Business Law and Media Studies graduate (now LLB Business Law) and president of the Students’ Union How did your course help to prepare you for the world of work? My course played a very important role in preparing me for the work environment. I also gained a lot of experience from my participation in various activities organised by the Students’ Union, as well as student societies. I also used the University’s careers service – it helped me discover what I wanted to do when I left university. I was given training, such as public speaking and interview training. You’ve just set up a farming business in Africa. Tell us what it’s like to set up your own business and what you hope to achieve? Setting up my own business is what I have always wanted to do, even before coming to university. With the contacts and the networks that I’ve built since my first year at university, I believe I can embark on this project with confidence that it will be successful. However, going into farming in Africa is more than just a business, it’s an opportunity to give something back to my motherland. How have you helped to improve the services of the Students’ Union since becoming president?

The key to the success of the Students’ Union lies in the active participation of students. Therefore, I tried to find new creative ways to engage students, to involve them in activities and campaigns. I also encouraged more staff support for the events led by students. Strengthening the student representative system was another important part of my job. It is essential that there is honest and transparent communication between students and staff, in order to improve the study quality and the experience that students get out of their years at university. Finally, I implemented more structure to the way student societies are managed by having regular meetings with the society representatives, working together on campaigns, planning and executing events together. What’s been your best experience at London Met? Being elected as the president of the London Met Students’ Union. It is such a privilege to be the voice of over 17,000 students. The job involves working on different platforms: from the Board of Governors to the Students’ Council. I love my job and have learnt so much from it. I am looking forward to applying these skills to the outside world.

Over the past few years, we’ve created new state-of-the-art teaching, social, and professional spaces. We also offer fantastic learning resources to ensure that you have what you need during your studies, and access to a wealth of electronic resources. I’m interested in law – how can I get experience of being in a courtroom? We’ve got a mock courtroom complete with dock, witness box and public gallery, that will familiarise you with the courtroom environment, explain the processes and aid your presentation skills – all of which helped two of our legal students to come an impressive 5th out of 64 universities in the ESU National Mooting Competition 2012. I’d love to study journalism – what facilities do you have to support my studies? In 2012, we opened a newsroom for our journalism students. Editor of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger, opened the £100,000 facility, which includes 40 computers equipped with the latest design software, large screen TVs and a mobile ‘Tricaster’ so students can host outside radio and TV broadcasts while streaming live footage to the internet.

For artists, what kinds of studios and workshops do you have? Our brand new studios at the Cass provide inspiring spaces for you to innovate and create. You’ll also have access to CASSworks, which offers specialist facilities including wood, metal and plastic workshops, digital manufacturing technologies, TV and recording studios, editing suites, and darkrooms. Media production and music students work on live projects for clients and our in-house TV station, Cass TV.

“ I think the Cass has the best wood and metal workshops with a brilliant technical support team; CNC and Waterjet Cutting; 3D printing facilities and much more. They also run a lot of induction courses so you can learn loads of new skills.” Alexander Mueller, BA Furniture and Product Design graduate

Student profile

Priyavanshi Desai, BSc Biomedical Science and student ambassador Why did you choose to study science at London Met? I really wanted to get a good education at a renowned university - not only has London Met got a superlab, but my science course is IBMS (Institute of Biomedical Science) accredited so it will enhance my future training prospects. What are the facilities like at the Science Centre? Having 280 workstations with state-of-the art facilities worth £30 million, it’s hard to complain! I have always enjoyed the science centre with great enthusiasm; I’m eager to learn more through various practicals under the supervision of qualified teachers.

Do you get to do much practical work in the Superlab? A science degree allows at least one to two hands-on practical sessions a week among lectures. It increases my practical skills to another level and we often put theories we learn in lectures into practice. What do you like best about your course? Aside from the practicals, I enjoy learning about the cutting edge world of science today; the vast range of topics covered and being able to choose optional modules, which allow me to alter my degree to specific interests. I also like the fact that there are laboratory work placement opportunities available. Tutors are always on hand with feedback, which enables me to continually improve, and keeping moving forward.

The centre is well equipped and fulfils the necessary educational needs of the students. Interested in studying biomedical science? Pil and Galia Kollectiv

“ We’ve taken students on trips to art venues ranging from the Whitechapel Gallery, ICA and the Royal Academy to Raven Row and the Horse Hospital.”

62

Staff profile

Dr Pil and Dr Galia Kollectiv, artists and lecturers in fine art You teach in the ‘Conversations with culture’ studio at the Cass. What does that involve?

particularly in the age of post-Fordist labour, when so much work is itself performative. Since our work often focuses the subject, performance tends to make sense as a medium.

Our approach to teaching is generally quite student led, so in our studio we try to respond to the concerns and interests of students. We have devoted sessions to specific issues such as post-internet art and post-colonial ethnography as well as exercises in media critique, painting and collage. We’ve also taken students on trips to art venues ranging from the Whitechapel Gallery, ICA and the Royal Academy to Raven Row, the Horse Hospital and Focal Point Gallery in Colchester with the aim of expanding their knowledge of contemporary art and modes of display.

How does the study of fine art prepare students for a future as an artist?

You’ve worked quite a lot with performance art; what is it about the medium that you find appealing?

We’re working on a performance piece for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. It’s a continuation of our research into work and ritual, proposing a team-building workshop that descends into a cultic rite.

We find the medium fundamentally unappealing, and that’s why we first embarked on it. Things that make you uncomfortable are the things that can be most interesting and rewarding to pursue. That said, working with performers, musicians and other collaborators has proven a good way of investigating the relationship between art and work,

The study of fine art introduces students not only to a range of ways of making, but also to the discourse of fine art. An important part of any fine art course is the peer learning that takes place through seminar discussion – students learn to articulate ideas about their work visually and theoretically as they become aware of conventions and concepts in art. It is vital for artists to master this discourse, even if they are to contest some of its terms. What art projects of your own are you currently working on?

“ When I came to London Met in 2012, I had a dream to become a computer network engineer. Programming tasks were tough but I didn’t give up and in the end I received the British Computer Society (BCS) award for the best second year student. It was an amazing feeling to meet the president of the BCS. I can’t wait to graduate and put all my knowledge to the real test.” Paulius Raskevicius, BSc Computer Networking student

Staff profile

Dr Shashika Vethanayagam 68

Staff profile

Dr Shashika Vethanayagam, lecturer for BSc Psychology with specialisms in social psychology and developmental social psychology Why were you attracted to the field of psychology? I was drawn to the field by research that attempts to further our understanding of the development of prejudice, identity and cultural behaviours in young children. I’m a developmental social psychologist; in other words I’m a social psychologist interested in how children develop. Some of the areas I look at include children’s patterns of ethnic, national and religious identifications and the interactions between these identities, as well as children’s attitudes and levels of prejudice towards members of their own and other groups. Are there special psychology facilities available at the Science Centre? Yes, the School has a range of laboratory facilities in the science centre, including the Sensory Lab, Psychophysiological lab, Observation lab, and Health Clinic. All of our facilities have been designed to be flexible and provide practical support for a wide variety of teaching and research. Individual students or groups of students can also book these spaces to carry out psychology practicals and research projects.

What do you enjoy about teaching at London Met? I enjoy small group teaching in any area of social psychology with lots of discussion through activities and the use of videos. Compared to other universities I have worked at, our student body is very diverse in terms of ethnicities, nationalities, religions and ages, which is great. Why should students study psychology at London Met? We’re able to offer options in the final year run by specialists in a number of areas (e.g., chartered clinical, health, forensic, and occupational psychologists) which focus on the application of psychology to the real-world and enable students to gain an insight into a range of potential career options. There’s also an emphasis on the development of employability skills and student support – for example, our student peer-mentoring scheme enables students in the second and third years to give much valued support to first years whilst also developing their own skills and experience. It’s an excellent scheme to get involved with.

Want to study psychology? We offer the following courses: // BSc Psychology (p.121) // BSc Psychology and Sociology (p.121) // BSc Sports Psychology and Coaching (p.121)
