Quoc Luu Nguyen BSc (Hons) Games Modelling, Animation and Effects “ My course involves 2D and 3D animations and character modelling, film production, editing images and VFX, game design and digital toy design. I like it because it gives a taste of different aspects in the field. I’m currently on an internship as a graphic/animation designer for a company in Shoreditch. I was recently involved in a CIMA Challenge, creating a short videoclip last year for London Met students who came third! I also took part in a one-day Toy Jam in a team working on new toy prototypes and pitching ideas, and in a Game Jam with new people where we created a game in 48 hours. When I graduate, I want to work in a 3D animation studio or for a game company, and direct and produce 3D animation. My best tip for new students is to never give up on what you do. Each and every one of us is talented – so show everyone what you’re made of.”
Winter Milek BSc Hons Games Modelling, Animation and Effects “ I am from California, near Anaheim (where Disneyland is). I lived in Austria for a while after high school, but moved to London specifically for the course I’m on. It was a brilliant choice – I am absolutely loving my time in London and at London Met. One of my favorite aspects of the course is that it is hands-on. The entire course is project-based and designed to simulate an actual games studio. We work with the programming course and other courses to get as realistic as we can as to how an actual professional games company works. I think this gives us a huge advantage. Nigel and Fiona, the two tutors who run our course, really go all out to get us work experience and get us prepared to head right into jobs on graduation. I’m actually hoping to continue on to a PhD at London Met, but after that I would like to work (we’re talking dream job here) for Lego, designing models for their video games or figures.”

“ Taking part in Accelerator* has really helped me crystallise my idea and to make it a viable business. With the help of Accelerator I founded Young Pro magazine, which is an online and print resource that aims to help more elite young athletes turn professional. It provided me with a ton of opportunities to meet experts who have not only helped me launch my venture, but also raise capital and develop a strategic road map. London Met graduate internships The London Met graduate internship programme helps our students to get their foot onto the career ladder. We offer approximately 30 paid internships each year, and London Met graduates can apply to work in different departments across the University. The programme enables our students to gain experience of the working world, whether they are helping to organise focus groups, making videos, updating our website or writing press releases.
“The different skills I have learnt over the past four months have been both wide-ranging and incredibly important for the jobs that I will be applying for when my internship comes to an end. The perspective I have brought as a recent graduate has been readily accepted and is being incorporated in the day-to-day operations of the Student Hub. I feel like I have become an integral part of the team. I would recommend that everyone should take the opportunity to take part in the internship scheme as it not only provides an excellent breadth of experience and skills, but I have also found it to be a great confidence boost as well.” Christopher Rudd, graduate intern for London Met’s Academic Registry and BA (Hons) English Literature alumnus

“I loved my time at uni – my course allowed me to try out all kinds of different media. Mostly storytelling, in one format or another, I suppose! After fifteen years in business while developing my writing on the side I took the plunge and became a full-time author and mother. I am now the Leverhulme Trust’s Writer in Residence (2016) at the British Library’s Business and IP Centre which brings together my business experience and my passion for writing – a perfect role!” Melissa Addey, graduate melissaaddey.com

Our One Campus, One Community project marks a new beginning for London Metropolitan University – and you can be a part of it. Between now and 2019 we will be investing £125 million to create a single university based in Islington. Currently our art courses are taught in Aldgate and our business and law courses in Moorgate and Aldgate. This will be the first time in our 170-year history that all four of our faculties will co-exist in one location and we are excited by the opportunities for collaboration this brings. As part of one community based in the heart of north London, you will benefit from: • improved study and social spaces • new and updated facilities • greater synergy between faculties Our staff and students from our art, architecture and design faculty, The Cass, will enhance the creative and vibrant environment at our Islington campus and engage with the community that surrounds us. Business and law staff and students will be able to share their expertise and provide commercial perspectives to courses in other faculties, engaging directly with students on work-based projects, mentoring, work shadowing and internships. We are committed to improving the student experience and to involving you in creating a 28

stronger community. With all our faculties in one place, there will be opportunities for joint initiatives and exciting possibilities for activities outside of your subject or faculty. These will build on our already strong links within our local community, where we are involved in everything from helping local teenagers to build radios, to assisting in sports work placements at Arsenal Football Club, to installing student street furniture in Aldgate. Our staff include a writer for The Guardian (journalism lecturer Anne Karpf), a housing association board member working with Islington Council’s housing department (lecturer Patrick Mulrenan), the chair of Hackney Community Youth Orchestras Trust (media lecturer Chris Lane) and many more who have deeply embedded community links that help to shape our courses. One Campus, One Community is a multiyear project. Teaching will start to move to Holloway from September 2017 but with some teaching continuing at our Aldgate and Moorgate sites until at least 2018. We will fully support you throughout any transition to ensure that you gain the best experience from your time at London Met, regardless of where you study. involved
Getting involved in a society, taking up a new sport or joining a campaign is a great way to learn different skills, get to know the University and London and, of course, to make new friends.
Getting involved
Wherever your interests lie, taking part will also boost your career prospects by adding value to your graduate profile – potential employers are always interested in hearing about the kinds of things you were involved with at university.

Led by students, both teams are always on the lookout for new talent. Get involved by offering your services as a journalist, graphic designer, DJ, researcher or technical assistant.
An independent, democratic organisation, London Met Students’ Union (MetSU) voices the views of our students on a range of issues relating to the University and the wider community. Each and every student has the opportunity to stand and be elected, so if you’re keen to gain experience of working for a large and influential organisation, or would like to help make key decisions about the University, getting involved with the Union is a great way to do so. MetSU is also the place to go for student societies, sports teams, social events, NUS cards (student discounts!), 16-25 Railcards, setting up campaigns and independent advice on a range of academic issues. londonmetsu.org.uk

Victoria Pennant BA (Hons) Sports Business Management “ Verve magazine is a Student Union publication for London Met. It is geared towards London Met students, giving advice, tips and all the juicy bits going on in and around uni. I decided to work on Verve as I thought it would be great experience as a budding journalist. It is also fun and a great way to meet people. We have open Verve meetings to decide on content, so that any student that is interested in writing for the magazine can come along and bring their ideas. I think the best piece I have worked on must have been the annual recap. I enjoyed looking back on all the crazy things that have gone on throughout the year! When I graduate I want to either write for Buzzfeed or become a freelancer. My top tips for new students are to get involved! Things are not going to be placed in your lap. Ask questions, be curious and friendly. London Met has a lot to offer, you just have to dive right in.”
Sylvie Carlos BA (Hons) Event Management and Public Relations “ Verve is the student radio station. Our station is run by students and that allows students a platform to express themselves through music, but also through personalised segments. Radio presenters are in control of their show’s content, as long as it is not anything controversial. As the head of station, it is my role to approve show proposals. I like to meet up with each applicant to really get a feel for their show and make sure they have passion for our station. My weekly real talk segments on my “frizz & go” show have been really fun to work on – one called ‘catch flights not feelings’ was my favourite, because it was motivational and super relatable. I am contemplating at the minute if radio and TV is my career path or if I want to progress as an events manager. Having this role has allowed me to open my options and potentially turn a hobby and passion into a career. My tips for students? Embrace your individuality. London Met allows you to be different and reach your potential. Network, you never know when you may need someone’s expertise. And get involved in as much as possible, making sure you keep your studies as your priority.” 35

London Met funding workshops You can also join one of our funding workshops held around the time the Student Loans Company (SLC) begins accepting applications, and are geared to help all UK and EU students with a London Met offer. How do I pay? All students need to pay half their tuition fees on their first day – if you have a student loan, your fees are paid directly by the Student Loans Company, you just need to show proof of this when you enrol. If you are paying your own tuition fees, then after you pay the first half, the rest can be paid in instalments up to three months after your course starts, either online or in person in a range of ways. londonmet.ac.uk/payingyourfees More information londonmet.ac.uk/advice londonmet.ac.uk/funding 45

Guy Marshall Brown BA (Hons) Fine Art
“ I am originally from The Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, a very rural area and so London is a significant change. My course is a comprehensive coverage of contemporary art practice and art history, full of lively tutors who enjoy encouraging the students to push and pursue artistic careers and assist them in establishing their own artistic practice – this has been essential to my career development. The ceramics workshop, orchestrated by Fred Gatley has been absolutely paramount. I very quickly realised that ceramics was a material that I loved working with and the ceramics facilities that the Cass has, have provided me with that. My course offers an extensive archive of networks and contacts that are accessible through the well-connected tutors that the course boasts. Outside of university I maintain a keen interest in the arts, pursuing work experience and internships within galleries and magazines that I feel have benefited my art practice. Once I graduate I will be continuing my art practice – producing, selling and exhibiting my artwork as I am already doing.”
Cass Projects (The Projects Office) provides a supportive, professional environment that allows students and staff to undertake consultancy commissions and research projects, as well as providing project management support to live projects carried out by students as part of their course work. Recent successful interdisciplinary projects have included the award-winning Aldgate Project, Made in Hayes and Solar Decathlons in China and Colombia. • The Cass was included in the new edition of Europe’s Top 100 Schools of Architecture and Design published by prestigious domus magazine in 2016. • Teaching takes place in practitioner-led studios and units and is demanding, creative and challenging. Staff include Florian Beigel, Mark Brearley, Ben Cain, Pil and Galia Kollectiv, Aimee McWilliams, Patrick Brill (Bob and Roberta Smith) and Simone Ten Hompel. • The Cass engages with London’s many creative festivals. Students have exhibited at London Design Festival, Clerkenwell Design Week, London Festival of Architecture and more.
• At last year’s Celebration Week students presented their work in progress to 36 expert critics including Rosy Greenlees, Director of the Crafts Council; Olly Wainwright of The Guardian; Gruffalo Illustrator Axel Scheffler; Harriet Vine, Founder of Tatty Devine and London Design Festival Curator Max Fraser. • Assemble, who won the Turner Prize in 2015, include two alumni and two tutors from The Cass. “ I enjoy meeting the students and following their progress throughout the degree, watching them shape their future around their degree. Watching a class take information in and then become more enthusiastic about the subject is really satisfying. The Royal Society of Chemistry accreditation of this degree is a distinction that recognises the value of the course that we offer – students can be assured that they are on a programme that has been endorsed by a professional body. We really try and place an emphasis on practical experience in the laboratory – our superlab is an amazing facility that allows our students to do a full range of practical experiments in all aspects of chemistry. We also run a work placement module where you can see first-hand what happens behind the scenes. We are trying to give our graduates the skills and experience to be work-ready directly from graduation.”

Dr Silvia Dal Bianco Senior lecturer in the Guildhall Faculty of Business and Law
“ I obtained an economics degree from Bocconi University in Milan, where I developed an interest in emerging and developing countries, and then an MSc in Economics for Development at Oxford University, followed by a PhD in Economics from Pavia University in Italy. I have been a research-active academic for the last fifteen years, with areas of expertise in macroeconomics, development and applied economics as well as international business. I have taught students at Oxford and University College London, and published in internationally recognised journals such as Empirical Economics and Corporate Governance. I have also consulted for the Department for International Development (DFID) and the European Social Fund. Employability is playing an increasing part in curriculum development here, and is embedded in all the modules I teach. I host internal and external employability talks and inform students about all the opportunities here, such as the yearly Accelerator business competition. Ricardo Eversley Senior lecturer in visual communication
“ My background is within visual communication: traditional communication design and in the last 10 years digital product design. I aim to give students as much insight into real-world scenarios, processes and methodologies as possible. Knowing and seeing a student’s potential before they can see it themselves is always a great moment. Our students work hard in a really competitive area, so seeing them achieve their goals after three or four years is always a beautiful moment. Recent students have gone on to work for Jack Morton Worldwide, Proximity London, Territory Studios, Dare and in-house design teams at Carphone Warehouse and Capita. We also have a thriving number of students in start-ups such as Room CR6, and others who go on to teach. Come and see what we do at The Cass. Our USP has to be the community spirit between students, staff and external contributors. Seeing it first-hand at summer shows and open days makes a massive difference. Our students are exposed to traditional as well as contemporary forms of visual communication, from letterpress and screenprinting to photography and digital applications.” 87

“ After I graduate I would like to be a police inspector for the Met, so I chose this course because it is specifically related to crime and criminal investigation. I have found it really interesting so far – it is giving us a wide perspective on criminology, and a good understanding of what I can expect from a career in this field. The lecturers have been friendly, helpful, and approachable. In the first year, we visited Marylebone Road Magistrates Court to observe how hearings are presented and what goes on – that was a really interesting assignment. I also did some mentoring at HM Prison Holloway (the women’s prison), where I was finding ways to help women integrate back into society – whether that was advising them on improving their qualifications or on using the job centre.” 103

Veronica Mason Course leader for BSc Youth Studies in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities and a graduate of London Met with a BSc in Sociology and Psychology
“ As a qualified youth work practitioner, my areas of interest include the study of youth culture, the development of youth identities, gender, ethnicity and the effects of discrimination and professional youth work practice. My current PhD research is an inter-generational study that explores the interpretations and significance that UK black men attach to US hip hop and aims to be the first hip hop intergenerational study of its kind in the UK. If you are concerned about societal change, media moral panics and the effects this has on young people, this degree course is for you. No prior youth work experience is necessary, just the passion to put your thoughts into action and be a change maker. Together we can provide additional support, advice and guidance to young people, which can empower them to make informed decisions and bring about positive change. Let’s be a part of the change we want to see!”
Youth Studies Youth Studies, BSc (Hons) Focusing on youth culture, this course takes an in-depth look at evolving identities, media representations, social policy, community development and the history of government approach to youth policy. With both theoretical and practicebased elements, this course encompasses cultural studies, criminology, sociology and psychology to provide insights into everything from youth work to urban gang life: from young people’s social welfare to the history of hip hop. There will also be opportunities for you to acquire practical skills in computing, video production and multimedia creativity. UCAS code: L531 3 years
