London life

11

Situated in the heart of one of the world’s most exciting and diverse capital cities, London Met has everything you need right at your fingertips. With the glittering West End, trendy Shoreditch and many of London’s historic landmarks just a short journey away, you’ll have easy access to everything from world-class theatre and the best shopping districts to an abundance of pop-up food markets, live music bars and art galleries.

Theatrical fancies

As one of the great theatre capitals of the world, London’s West End has plenty on offer to entertain you throughout the year. You can pick up cheap tickets on the day and up to a week in advance at Theatreland’s official ticket booth, TKTS. Stay local: Sadler’s Wells, the Almeida Theatre, the Old Red Lion Theatre and the King’s Head Theatre are all close by. Many of them offer student discounts to boot.

Shopping trips

From vintage markets to multi-storey shopping centres, London has everything you need when you come to hit the shops. Remember to get your NUS extra card from our Students’ Union to open up a whole world of incredible discounts.

Stay local: Voted the best shop in Holloway by Time Out London, Selby’s is your one-stop shop for, well, pretty much everything. The shelves of Smug in Islington are also worth your perusal.

Cultural fixes

London is home to a diverse range of exhibitions and collections, housed in some of the British capital’s most striking buildings: the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Tate galleries and many more. Alongside paid-for exhibitions, many of these fascinating institutions offer the chance to browse some of their collections for free. Stay local: The British Library is just a short journey from our Islington home and, with more than 150 million items, there’s a treasure trove of fascinating literature to explore.

London is home to more than 1,000 museums and galleries.

London life

“ The only road in the country where you can eat in an Ecuadorian-Bolivian restaurant and buy a made-to-measure 40s-style wiggle dress.” Time Out London on Holloway Road

Brain food

London is full of little gems where you can grab a bite to eat and drink. Brick Lane, Borough and Notting Hill are just a few of the places you’ll find scrumptious street food. Maltby Street Market in Bermondsey is another, with Waffle On (try the bacon option!), The Toucon (may we suggest the Brazilian wrap?) and St John’s Bakery all worth a visit. Oh, and when it comes to burgers, which it always does eventually, Meat Market in Covent Garden is definitely one of our favourites (veggies, fear not, there’s also a halloumi mushroom burger).

Stay local: For food, drink and a touch of board game competition, head to The Brewhouse, just next to Highbury & Islington station.

Stay local: Love chicken, fed up of Nando’s? Try BIRD, just up the road from our Holloway campus for burgers, waffles and pancakes, all with free-range chicken. For a quick bite, The Barn serves a scrumptious menu of sandwiches, quiches, pastries and more to keep you going through lectures.

Stay local: Our sporting neighbours, Arsenal Football Club, are so local to Holloway we can see their Emirates Stadium from our very own Tower Building.

Thirst quenchers

Feeling thirsty? Try Gordon’s Wine Bar or Bedford & Strand, which are both just off The Strand. For a special occasion, why not pay a visit to the London Gin Club, Covent Garden Cocktail Club or Nightjar in Old Street, voted one of the top six bars in the UK by GQ Magazine? But if shakes and juices are your chosen tipple, try Joe & the Juice.

Sporting action

London is home to some of the UK’s best-known sporting venues. Whether it’s cricket at the Oval, Twickenham’s rugby, football at Wembley or the world’s oldest tennis tournament, Wimbledon, there’s live sporting action for everyone to enjoy across the capital.

Music venues

London is home to a host of incredible music venues, from Wembley Stadium to the O2 Arena, but in our culturally eclectic capital they stand side by side with a few more intimate venues too. Stay local: The Roundhouse and Union Chapel are two such venues, both having hosted some of the best acts around. The former even claims to be considered by both audiences and artists as “one of the most incredible live performance spaces in the world”. Surely that alone makes it worth a visit.

Postgraduate study

15

Whether you’re looking to change career direction, improve your job prospects or simply pursue a passion, London Met is an excellent choice for postgraduate study. Our lecturers are leaders in their field, with over two-thirds of the University’s research output judged to be world-leading or internationally recognised in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. Many of our postgraduate degrees are also accredited by professional bodies. These include the: • Association for Nutrition (AfN) • Bar Standards Board • BCS – The Chartered Institute for IT • British Dietetic Association • British Psychological Society (BPS) • Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) • Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) • Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) • Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) • Ofsted • Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) • Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) As well as providing an excellent education, we’ll support you every step of the way. From the initial application process to helping you develop the employability skills you need for a rewarding and successful career, we’re here from the moment you enquire to the moment you secure that all-important job or promotion.

Postgraduate taught courses MA/MSc

We offer taught master’s degrees in a wide range of subject areas. Browse our course listings from page 40 for a full list. Much like an undergraduate degree, a taught master’s course normally consists of a number of modules, with teaching taking the form of seminars, tutorials and lectures. The final assessment for a master’s degree usually includes the submission of a dissertation.

MA by Project

Ideal for creatively minded students, the MA by Project gives you the opportunity to set your own agenda as a practitioner or researcher by undertaking practice-based or desk-based study of areas including music technology, jewellery, visual art or design. The course is comprised of four core modules but also gives you the freedom to make your own work central to your programme of study. The project may include developing craftworks, artefacts or a thesis. See page 49 for more information.

Postgraduate diplomas and certificates

We offer a number of postgraduate diplomas (PG Dips) and certificates (PG Certs). These courses provide you with specific knowledge and are often shorter than a master’s degree. The Counter-Terrorism Studies PG Cert, law conversion courses and Media and Entertainment Law PG Dip are just a few of the courses we offer.

Our graduates have gone on to work at companies including the BBC, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Bank of England, Alexander McQueen and the British Museum.

Postgraduate Certificates in Education (PGCEs)

The PGCE is one of the most popular routes into teaching. Students on the University-based PGCE route attend classes at the University but also spend a minimum of 24 weeks on placement in two or more schools, whereas the School Direct programme provides school-led training run by a lead school in partnership with the University. You can specialise in a number of areas including early years, primary, secondary, further education or the training sector. See pages 93 to 99 to view the PGCE courses we offer. Here you’ll also find our assessment-only courses, which are aimed at experienced teaching assistants or unqualified teachers already working in schools who would like to attain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Postgraduate research courses MPhil/PhD

Students undertaking research degrees such as an MPhil or PhD work largely independently to produce a lengthy, original piece of research with support from a supervisory team. A research career can lead to opportunities in academia as well as business, industry, commerce and the not-for-profit sector. We also run a Researcher Development Programme (RDP), which provides a range of training and development opportunities for our postgraduate research students. You’ll have access to workshops, online courses and videos, all of which are designed to help you develop transferable professional, personal, research and career skills.

17

PhD by distance learning

Provided that suitable local facilities and support are available, it’s possible to study an MPhil or PhD while living abroad. Students normally make regular visits to London Met and are in frequent contact with their supervisors.

Professional Doctorate

Comparable to the PhD in terms of scale and rigour, the Professional Doctorate is aimed at busy professionals who want to undertake a substantial investigation into an area of current professional practice. We currently run programmes in policing, security and community safety (page 108), counselling psychology (page 111), forensic psychology (page 112), health psychology (page 112) and occupational psychology (page 113).

A culture of research

21

Research and knowledge exchange are central to the culture of intellectual enquiry here at London Met and underpin our consultancy work and relationships with partners in business, industry, public bodies and local communities. Staff members at London Met undertake innovative, relevant and evidence-based research, as well as offering consultancy and training in areas such as: • urban policy • work and working lives • migration and migrants • education with a commitment to social justice • violence against women and children, and the emergence of trafficking • finance and economics • informatics, data science, intelligent and secure systems • electronic, digital signal processor (DSP) and wireless communication systems • nutrition and health Our research is often multi-disciplinary and staff welcome the opportunity to supervise research students on topics related to their work.

MPhil/PhD

Research students at London Met can work towards a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). To obtain a PhD you’re expected to investigate a topic and make an original contribution to knowledge. At MPhil level, your research should represent an extension of existing knowledge, although the demands of originality and sustained enquiry are less than those required for a PhD.

As a research student you’ll be provided with research training and have access to any master’s-level modules that may be helpful to you. You’ll also be encouraged to attend conferences, write papers and publish work while pursuing your research. A research degree typically takes two years to complete if studying full-time, or three years if studying part-time. For more information, including application procedures and fees, visit: londonmet.ac.uk/RDRSARCH

Research institutes, centres and programmes

More than 30 research groupings have been established at the University to investigate and address important social, economic, political, cultural, scientific and technological challenges. You can find out more about these on our website: londonmet.ac.uk/research

A culture of research

Our research Psychology lecturer finds link between lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) community and mental health issues Adults who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual are twice as likely as heterosexual adults to suffer from anxiety or depression, according to research we carried out with UCL and Public Health England. The study, which was published in BMC Psychiatry, highlights the need for healthcare policy to address the needs of the LGB community. It suggests that clinicians should ensure they provide health and wellbeing services that allow LGB patients to disclose their sexual orientation and receive supportive and integrated care.

Two-thirds of our research has been judged to be world-leading.

London Met’s psychology lecturer Dr Joanna Semlyen is the lead author of the paper. She said: “Minority groups are more likely to experience internal and external manifestations of prejudice, victimisation, and discrimination, which can lead to health problems because these experiences are internalised. The stress brought about by this may lead people who identify as non-heterosexual to experience poorer mental-health and wellbeing, unhealthy behaviours and worse physical health. They may be more prone to risky behaviour such as smoking, hazardous drinking and substance abuse – all of which have been pointed to as being particularly prevalent among the LGB community in other recent studies and literature.” The report, based on a systematic review of the prevalence of mental disorder, suicidality and self-harm in LGB people, showed that these populations experience greater incidences of depression, anxiety, suicidality and substance misuse than heterosexuals.

London’s green spaces have been given a new lease of life thanks to research carried out by Professor Mark Brearley and the Cass Cities team.

Built on Mark’s determination that London’s green spaces have wonderful assets and should be cared for to allow more people to enjoy them, the Green Grid initiative began in 2006.

Mark Brearley, who teaches on a number of postgraduate courses at London Met, is a cheerleader for a whole cluster of urban investigations carried out by the Cass Cities research unit.

In 2012 the Green Grid concept was incorporated into the London Plan and in 2013 the first tranche of stand-alone mayoral funding for the project was introduced.

One such investigation has seen him fight for the city’s parks and green areas to be recognised as spaces that carry strong individual and communal identity. He identified that action was needed to enable popular use of these spaces and that a richer culture within them could be nurtured through simple means.

Our students, staff and graduates are impacting the world of science, pushing creative boundaries and campaigning against social injustices.

Our One Campus, One Community project marks a new beginning for London Metropolitan University – and you can be a part of it. Between now and 2020 we’ll be investing £125 million to create a single-campus university based in Islington. Our art courses are currently taught in Aldgate and our business and law courses in Moorgate and Aldgate. This will be the first time in our 170-year history that all of our subject areas will co-exist in one location and we’re excited by the opportunities for collaboration this brings. As part of one community based in the heart of north London, you’ll benefit from: • improved study and social spaces • new and updated facilities • greater synergy between subject areas • a vibrant and cohesive university where students can interact and collaborate together

We’re investing £125m to create a single unified campus in Islington with new and updated facilities.

Our art, architecture and design students will enhance the creative and vibrant environment at our Islington campus and engage with the community that surrounds us. Business and law staff and students will be able to share their expertise and provide commercial perspectives to courses in other areas, engaging directly with students on work-based projects, mentoring, work shadowing and internships. We were recently awarded our highest ever student satisfaction score in the National Student Survey and are committed to involving you in creating a stronger community. With everyone in one place, there will be opportunities for joint initiatives and exciting possibilities for activities outside of your subject. These will build on our already strong links within our local community where we’re involved in everything from helping local teenagers to build radios, to assisting in sports work placements at Arsenal Football Club, to installing student street furniture in Aldgate.

Our location and visiting us

Our teaching staff include an independent trustee for the Centre for Public Scrutiny (public administration lecturer Diana Stirbu), a housing association board member working with Islington Council’s housing department (lecturer Patrick Mulrenan), the chair of Hackney Community Youth Orchestras Trust (media lecturer Chris Lane) and many more who have deeply embedded community links that help to shape our courses. One Campus, One Community is a multiyear project. Teaching will start to move to Holloway from September 2017 but with some teaching continuing at our Aldgate and Moorgate sites until at least 2019. The majority of courses will remain at their current campus until 2019. We will fully support you throughout any transition to ensure that you gain the best experience from your time at London Met, regardless of where you study. Architecture, art and design (The Cass)

“The Cass has a fantastic range of workshops and as an MA student you have access to all these facilities.

Lucy Schofield, Fine Art MA graduate Lucy Schofield studied our Fine Art MA (now Fine Arts MFA) and is a collaborator on the Where’s My Boozer Gone? project run by East End group The Geezers. After joining The Cass’s InterAct Collective, I became involved with The Geezers, a group of older men based on the Roman Road who were running a project looking at disappearing pubs around the East End of London. As well as being beautiful buildings, the East End pub was a lot more than just a place for drinking. It was a hub for community interaction; sports team meetings, kids’ trips or finding out about the general goings on and wellbeing of people in the local area happened from there. The Geezers Lounge Bar in a taxi evolved from our discussions about the rapidly disappearing structure of the East End. The taxi is a mobile space to encourage interaction as well as a campaign vehicle for collecting stories in different places and a physical statement that highlights the displaced places and lost functions within the community.

53

From making newspapers, drawing my own wallpaper or making bathroom tiles, I use all kinds of media to represent conversations, ideas or collective energies from different places and communities. I like to work collaboratively and my work is about creating a sort of alternative democracy from people and places that aren’t always represented around the city. I like to adapt, rearrange, appropriate or re-appropriate familiar spaces in order to disrupt conventions and make people think or act differently about their everyday situations. I have used a lift, where I hosted an elevator arcade, the What’s Going on Today Café?, and the taxi, amongst other things, to create spaces of interaction. The Cass has a fantastic range of workshops and as an MA student you have access to all these facilities. This has allowed me to develop my work in many directions. It’s also possible to study part-time so it can fit in with other life commitments, which is rare in London. I also enjoyed access to new art networks, and involvement in lots of exciting art events organised by our tutor Bob and Roberta Smith. Feeling inspired by Lucy’s project? Read about our Fine Arts MFA on page 48.

“I truly enjoyed my study and life here, and decided I could make something out of it.

Qi Xu, Legal Practice Course (LPC) Postgraduate Diploma graduate Qi Xu came from China to study an undergraduate course at London Met. She enjoyed her time here so much she returned to study our Legal Practice Course (LPC) Postgraduate Diploma. Now she’s a paralegal at long-standing London solicitors Child & Child. I studied my Graduate Diploma in Law at London Metropolitan University and enjoyed it a lot. The lecturers were fantastic and made the course very interesting, so it was a natural decision for me to come back. London Met is a diverse university. As an international student, it is important to study in a university that is welcoming and supportive towards international students. Being in a diverse environment is also helpful for career prospects, as it teaches you how to work with people from different backgrounds. There was a Law Mentoring Programme that gave you the chance to be mentored by a solicitor, and in turn to mentor a paired undergraduate law student. I participated in the programme and learned a lot from my mentor, particularly when I did a one-day work placement at their office. I received London Met’s Excellent Mentee award for the programme.

London has a lot to offer, whatever your interests – art galleries, museums, antique shops, pubs and bars. I am a foodie so I like London’s street food markets most. My favourite weekend would involve taking a walk along the Thames and then tucking into street food on the South Bank. Studying law in the UK was essential [to getting my role at Child & Child as a paralegal]. I did not plan to settle and become a solicitor in the UK before I came here. It was only after studying in the UK that I realised I truly enjoyed my study and life here, and decided I could make something out of it. You may feel like a kite that has flown free of its string, and think you can just have fun and do anything. While enjoying everything London has to offer, it is important to keep your ultimate goals in mind and work towards them to ensure you complete your studies successfully. “I like students to ask questions. The more they ask, the more I can help.

Erdal Dogan, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Support Officer Erdal Dogan is an ICT Support Officer whose role is to provide technical support to students studying journalism, digital media and interpreting subjects. Students have high expectations, understandably, as they want to achieve a high grade in their coursework, and in their degree. When they ask for support I help them build on their existing knowledge, rather than just doing the work for them, which is really rewarding. I like students to ask questions. The more they ask, the more I can help. My job is to ensure the computers are up to date with the latest software and provide learning support for programmes including Adobe Premiere, Audition and InDesign during classes. I also make sure that students can access all the latest technologies for production and postproduction. We have a soundproofed radio studio that allows students to record in the quiet, a TV studio with a TriCaster where they can come and shoot video footage, and other specialist rooms. Depending what sort of project they’re working on we also have the latest hardware, for example Blackmagic cameras to shoot high quality footage, and flash mics to record high quality audio. We have all the necessary facilities to fully support our students’ learning.

79

Students can contact me by email or by phone, and I’ve also designed a VLE (virtual learning environment) system, which supports off-campus learning that students can access when I’m not around. That means, for example, if they’ve borrowed a camera and need to know the specification or how to use it, they have a web-learning unit they can refer to. I once helped a student with a WordPress website. She told me that I helped her by not only resolving her specific problem but also by explaining exactly why she needed to apply certain functionality to improve the quality of the work. I was able to help her take the quality of her work to the next level and she really acknowledged that, which was a good thing. Our academics provide tutorials on a weekly basis and students can see them directly. They can also see me directly. We make ourselves available to our students and ensure we acknowledge and respond to their queries. If you’re interested in studying digital media and taking advantage of all the incredible facilities that London Met has to offer, you can read about our Digital Media MA on page 75.

Georgia Whitfield, Sports Therapy MSc course leader London Met lecturer Georgia Whitfield is a freelance sports therapist for Sutton and Epsom Rugby Club. As course leader for our Sports Therapy MSc, she uses her experience in the field to teach our students the vital skills needed for a career as a sports therapist. I am lucky enough to work with a variety of practitioners from different areas of sports medicine, which means I am always learning something new. Sutton and Epsom Rugby Club is a great club, with a brilliant ethos and community spirit. I love the variety of the job, you never know what is going to happen next and you’re always kept on your toes. Studying at MSc level allows our students to develop the knowledge they’ve gained from their undergraduate degrees and apply it to a practical profession. The course can be completed in one year, unlike other comparable degrees, which span 18 months to two years. Much of our teaching is practice-based. We expect students to develop the theoretical knowledge under our guidance in their self-directed study. We then apply that knowledge through practical sessions and assessments.

Students are given the opportunity to work in the University’s own clinic during their placement module. During this time they will work with members of the public, students and staff who have a particular problem, which enables the students to apply their knowledge and develop as sports therapists. During this time we also aid students in finding placements in clinics, sports teams and clubs outside of the University. Through our partnership with the Society of Sports Therapists, clinics and sports teams we offer our students a lot of support and opportunities to get them into employment when they graduate. Our course is also fast-paced and demanding, which prepares our students for the demands of working as a professional sports therapist. Our alumni are working in a variety of settings including clinics, sports teams and teaching. We have graduates working in the Indian Premier League with one of the major cricket teams and others are working for rugby teams such as London Irish. Some have also gone on to build successful businesses running their own clinics. If you’re interested in a career in sports therapy, read more about our MSc course on page 84.

Social professions, education and teaching

Nicole Danielle and Whitney Papa, Master of Public Administration Nicole and Whitney met on the Master of Public Administration course at London Met. With the help of our business incubator, Accelerator, they went on to develop Oh Gee, Pie!, a charitable enterprise combining the creation of mouth-watering pastries with mentorship-led employability training for care leavers, winning our annual Big Idea Challenge in the process. Nicole: When we started our course, Whitney and I were both in an area of our lives where we were starting to go after something that we wanted. Being two Americans, we connected in class and started to have our own friendship, which led to us sharing our ideas. Our business idea goes along with what the University endorses, which is helping to support young people and their ideas, helping them to grow and become what they want to be. That’s exactly what we want to do, to empower young people who maybe wouldn’t have had the opportunity elsewhere. That’s exactly what the University has done with us. It’s an amazing community, an amazing platform and it has so many different connections. Whitney: Accelerator is an amazing community for us to belong to right now. Everyone’s very invested in our growth.

Nicole: Without London Met our business wouldn’t have happened the way it’s happening now. This is the best way. For over 10 years I’ve been thinking of doing this café. I think eventually it would have happened but London Met has really given us a better direction and a more realistic approach to building it. I really liked the teachers on our course. They were invested in all of us. They knew where our passions were. I also liked having the opportunity to work at Help on your Doorstep for our work placement. Whitney: The work placement was a real bonus for me. It was one of the big things that made me decide to choose this programme. I knew that I wanted to eventually work in some kind of charity so being able to get that placement meant a lot. Nicole: You may not realise it because you’re in your own programme but this University is such a massive organisation with so many different pieces and each individual piece comes together to help you get to where you want to go. Find out more about Accelerator, the Big Idea Challenge and how you could become your own boss with the help of London Met on page 16. “I felt London Met fitted me best and I have absolutely no regrets about my choice.

121

Ryan Conway, Criminology MSc graduate After studying our Criminology MSc, Ryan Conway secured a role at the Crown Prosecution Service where he assists in the preparation and presentation of complex cases. I decided to study criminology because I was fascinated by the whole field of crime and wanted to learn more about the reasons and methods behind the commission of criminal acts, the role of various criminal justice agencies and the political aspect behind the management of crime. I also wanted a career in a field where I could make a genuine difference to people’s lives and society in general, and I felt criminology could offer me that career. I had informal chats and email communication with London Met and other universities regarding their criminology courses. In the end, I was more impressed with what London Met had to offer me both in terms of course content and delivery. I felt London Met fitted me best and I have absolutely no regrets about my choice. The University has a terrific core group of criminology lecturers who both excite and motivate students, and the guest lecturers offer insights and documentary evidence of crimes and offenders that you won’t find in the papers or on television.

In my role at the Crown Prosecution Service I provide office assistance in the preparation and presentation of complex cases within the Proceeds of Crime Service. This involves dealing with correspondence and more complex casework enquiries, and occasionally attending court. I frequently liaise with the police and other organisations, both nationally and internationally, within the criminal justice system to help progress cases and offer assistance when necessary. I enjoy the excitement and responsibility that comes with casework. My cases are interesting and varied and it gives me a great sense of pride that I’m involved in a role that plays an active part in the management and, to a lesser extent, punishment of criminal activity. Read more about our Criminology MSc on page 107.
