You can specialise in a number of areas including early years, primary, secondary, further education or the training sector. Turn to pages 103 to 108 to view the PGCE courses we offer. Our research
27
Two-thirds of our research has been judged to be world-leading.
London Met has a vibrant research community and an active Postgraduate Research Student Society. Approximately 350 students are conducting research at London Met on either a full-time or part-time basis. Staff members at London Met undertake innovative, relevant and evidence-based research, as well as offering consultancy and training in areas such as: • urban policy • work and working lives • migration and migrants • education with a commitment to social justice • violence against women and children • finance and economics • informatics, data science, intelligent and secure systems • electronic, digital signal processor (DSP) and wireless communication systems • nutrition and health Our research is often multi-disciplinary and staff welcome the opportunity to supervise research students on topics related to their work.
MPhil/PhD Research students at London Met can work towards a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). To obtain a PhD you’re expected to investigate a topic and make an original contribution to knowledge. At MPhil level, your research should represent an extension of existing knowledge, although the demands of originality and sustained enquiry are less than those required for a PhD. As a research student you’ll be provided with research training and have access to any master’s-level modules that may be helpful to you. You’ll also be encouraged to attend conferences, write papers and publish work while pursuing your research. A research degree typically takes two years to complete if studying full-time, or three years if studying part-time. Research institutes, centres and programmes More than 30 research groupings have been established at the University to investigate and address important social, economic, political, cultural, scientific and technological challenges. You can find out more about these on our website: londonmet.ac.uk/research Here are just some of the ways that our research has made an impact: London Met research leads to a new toolkit to tackle obesity Research by London Met has led to a new toolkit to encourage takeaways in London’s most deprived areas to offer healthier options. Co-developed by London Met’s Research Development Manager, Sue Bagwell, the toolkit “Strategies for encouraging healthier out-of-home food provision” was launched on the Public Health England (PHE) website in April 2017. It aims to help local authorities and businesses provide and promote healthier options for food eaten away from home.
The toolkit has been created in partnership with Public Health England (PHE), the Children’s Food Trust, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and the Local Government Association. Sue said: “The increasing consumption of out-of-home meals has been identified as one of the key factors contributing to rising levels of obesity. One out of five children eat food from out-of-home food outlets at least once a week. These meals tend to be associated with higher energy intake, higher levels of fat, sugar, and salt, and lower levels of micronutrients. The toolkit summarises the evidence base, types of interventions and emerging local practice to help those responsible within local councils think about how they might bring together a coalition of partners to improve the food environment for children and families.” It is estimated that two thirds of adult men, half of adult women and one third of children are obese in England. Obesity is considered one of the most serious public health challenges in the twenty-first century and this toolkit has been developed in response to this national obesity crisis.

More than 30 research groupings have been established at the University to investigate important social, economic, political, cultural, scientific and technological challenges.
Police officers are overwhelmingly supportive of body cameras, London Met study shows Criminology experts at London Metropolitan University have identified broad support among police officers for body worn video cameras, following a study with City of London Police. Entitled “Trialling body worn video cameras for City of London Police”, the report showed that 83% of front-line police officers think wearing cameras should be compulsory.
The report also revealed that 93.2% believe cameras help with evidence gathering, with one adding that cameras are “the best piece of kit” they’ve used. Looking at officers’ attitudes towards the technology over a two-year period, London Met was commissioned to carry out the research due to its strong expertise in policing. Another interesting finding was that officers believe the presence of a camera has a calming effect on confrontational situations.

Art, architecture and design Profile
Simone ten Hompel Reader in Metal MA by Project and PhD supervisor
Simone ten Hompel has been working with metal for over 40 years. She’s exhibited at the V&A, won the prestigious Jerwood Applied Arts Prize and earned herself a reputation as one of Britain’s most critically acclaimed craftspeople. For over 27 years she’s been teaching at The Cass, where she’s a reader and supervises students studying PhDs and our MA by Project degree.
The MA by Project is a prelude to the PhD. The PhD is an apprenticeship into research and the end result is new knowledge for the sector. For the MA you’re gaining new knowledge for yourself. It’s a research MA and we facilitate students so that if they then want to apply for a PhD – and we’ve had a number of students who have done that – they have the right kind of tools, techniques and methodologies.
I started working with metal really early on in my life. I did an apprenticeship as a blacksmith in Germany from the age of 13 to 19 while I was still going to school. Part of the reason for this interest is that I’m a really excellent dyslexic and I knew that school was going to be difficult. Early on I found jewellery interesting but I couldn’t grasp the idea of adornment only.
There are MA by Project students working in areas including fine art, woodwork and music technology, but I focus on students working in all aspects of metal, whether it’s jewellery, silversmithing or metalwork. Practice counts for 70% of the degree so, although there is some writing, there’s a real emphasis on learning by doing.
I went on to study metalwork at the Royal College of Art here in London. I really enjoyed getting into the zone of problemsolving that doesn’t involve only the body but involves other functional problems. What is really important to me, and that comes possibly from my dyslexia, is that metal has become my first language. I feel most fluent and able to express myself through metal. I have a greater vocabulary – in the choices of materials, form and function – and it’s an embodied understanding that I have with this material.
There are a number of students who have done fantastic work. Juliette Bigley and Vladimir Bohm have done very good work in silversmithing and are now at the forefront of that sector. Students come and they discover their voice but they also use the MA by Project to set up their own business. We have students who make connections with particular outlets and students who come from psychology, from finance, from all sorts of areas, who make a career shift. You can read more about our MA by Project on page 56. You can also find out more about studying a PhD on page 27.

Hazel Messenger Master of Business Administration (MBA) course leader
Hazel Messenger is the course leader for our Master of Business Administration (MBA) both in the UK and overseas. She is particularly interested in the transformative and developmental potential of higher education and challenges students to make the most of their potential. As an MBA student we want you to realise it’s not just big business that matters, but small businesses and entrepreneurs too. We want you to think about not only getting an MBA but becoming an MBA graduate – the sort of person who’s prepared to make a difference in the world, to everybody in this world, rich or poor, children, older people, communities everywhere, so you can take back your learning to wherever you come from and make a difference. We think a course should consist of more than just the taught modules. On our MBA you’ll have access to a wide range of enrichment activities that will provide you with experience to help your development. The main programme consists of four modules covering the essential business functions of marketing, strategy, leadership, accounting and finance, and human resource management. On top of that, each of the pathways – general business, cyber security, business psychology and the other pathways – will have two modules, which you will study alongside students who specialise in those areas.
One of the most important things about our course is the MBA Monday and Friday. We start the week with a business breakfast, an informal event where students interview a visitor, and there will be a business dinner one evening a month where you’ll be able to listen to guest speakers. Fridays are a bit quieter. You’ll have a taught module but the afternoons are informal, either for religious observers or for group work. We think sandwiching the MBA in this way is important to your development. We’d like to welcome you to London to do an MBA with us – an MBA where you’re prepared to make a difference: a difference to your future but also a difference to the communities, the organisations and businesses that you’ll work for. The world needs people who are prepared to make a change as we all need a future that’s worthwhile. Find out more about our Master of Business Administration course, including the specialist pathways available, on page 67.
“On our MBA you’ll have access to a wide range of enrichment activities.”

Computing and digital media Profile
Alisa Akhba Digital Media MA
Alisa Akhba came from Abkhazia in the South Caucasus to study our Digital Media MA. Her experience of living in this partially recognised state inspired her to apply for her master’s degree and now she has big ambitions to use what she’s learnt to campaign for change back home. The best thing about my course was the variety. I have so many new skills – not just in theory but in practice as well. We covered a lot but were also given the opportunity to focus on what we wanted. The course was really intensive but the way the course leader presented it was so helpful. I really enjoyed the web design module, not just because we were taught how to create websites but because we learnt how to analyse those websites and whether they were successful or not. That’s so important in organisations today – to have a successful online presence. I’d never really experienced big city life before. For me, it’s been part of my education – I’ve learnt a lot just living here. I participated in lots of different clubs and societies, and made a lot of connections. Everything is happening here. There are so many professionals, so many industries. It’s been great to be in this atmosphere of growth, development and professionalism. If you can achieve something here, you will be able to achieve it anywhere in the world.
Digital media is the future! Using new technologies can make your voice heard all around the world and you can change the perceptions of a multitude of audiences. For my dissertation I’m focusing on how human rights organisations promote their interests and goals via social media. Social media is a huge part of our lives and, when it comes to human rights, it’s very hard to reach the target audiences in some countries. I’m working on creating my own PR company. It will be oriented towards promoting partially recognised or unrecognised countries at an international level. Being part of an international community is very important to me and should be very important for my society. We’re currently quite isolated – we don’t have access to education programmes and we’re constantly denied visas. This happens because people have the wrong perception of my country and the political situation. I want to change that in a positive way. What we need is an intensive digital PR campaign so that people know where Abkhazia is – that we’re a thriving democratic country and we share the same values as people around the world. I feel this project will help make people look at my community in a different way and we’ll have more opportunities to communicate with the international world. You can read more about our Digital Media MA on page 85.

Demilade Oriola Biomedical Science MSc
Demilade – Demi to his friends – enjoyed his undergraduate degree at London Met so much he returned to study a master’s course in biomedical science. He now has the support, facilities and drive to fulfil his ambition of becoming a haematologist. I loved my undergraduate degree. I had support, I made great friends – it was a great university experience. In my second year I started falling more and more in love with advanced blood science and I decided I’d like to study a master’s. My supervisor advised me that instead of doing blood science I should do biomedical science because you study similar modules and if I decided in the future to work in a different field I could. I was able to talk to my lecturers and they were very easy to relate to. I’ve compared this to my friends’ experiences at other unis. When I told them I can just go to my lecturers’ offices, knock and they’ll answer my questions, they found that very strange – lecturers who were available and supportive. The lecturers here make sure we have available work placements and give us help with our CVs – they help you succeed. One of the main reasons I came to London Met was because of the superlab. Being in that lab was amazing – the amount of resources and equipment available was far superior to any other university I’d visited.
I also liked that the library had different zones for silent, quiet and general study. I can’t work in absolute silence so having the opportunity to be downstairs where there’s general noise really helped me. I’ve managed to get so much more work done and being able to use the study rooms was amazing. My favourite thing about studying at London Met has been the opportunities I’ve been given. It feels like a second home. I’ve met a unique group of friends who have helped me become who I am and with the help of my lecturers I’m on the path to success. Everyone is so friendly here and it’s so multicultural. I’ve met people from all walks of life and learnt a lot about different cultures. When I finish my master’s degree I’d like to work as a haematologist, specifically an immunohematologist. I’ve done a lot of research and the more I read the more fascinated I am about it. I want to make an impact on people’s lives and, most importantly, I want to make my mum proud. You can read more about our Biomedical Science MSc on page 90.

Nicole and Whitney met on the Master of Public Administration course at London Met. With the help of our business incubator, Accelerator, they went on to develop Oh Gee, Pie!, a charitable enterprise combining the creation of mouth-watering pastries with mentorshipled employability training for care leavers, winning our annual Big Idea Challenge in the process. Nicole: When we started our course, Whitney and I were both in an area of our lives where we were starting to go after something that we wanted. Being two Americans, we connected in class and started to have our own friendship, which led to us sharing our ideas. Our business idea goes along with what the University endorses, which is helping to support young people and their ideas, helping them to grow and become what they want to be. That’s exactly what we want to do, to empower young people who maybe wouldn’t have had the opportunity elsewhere. That’s exactly what the University has done with us. It’s an amazing community, an amazing platform and it has so many different connections. Whitney: Accelerator is a fantastic community for us to belong to right now. Everyone’s very invested in our growth.
Nicole: Without London Met our business wouldn’t have happened the way it’s happening now. This is the best way. For over 10 years I’ve been thinking of doing this café. I think eventually it would have happened but London Met has really given us a better direction and a more realistic approach to building it. I really liked the teachers on our course. They were invested in all of us. They knew where our passions were. I also liked having the opportunity to work at Help on your Doorstep for my work placement. Whitney: The work placement was a real bonus for me. It was one of the big things that made me decide to choose this programme. I knew that I wanted to eventually work in some kind of charity so being able to get that placement meant a lot. Nicole: You may not realise it because you’re on your own programme but this University is such a massive organisation with so many different pieces and each individual piece comes together to help you get to where you want to go. Find out more about Accelerator, the Big Idea Challenge and how you could become your own boss with the help of London Met on page 19. Social sciences Profile
Andrew Moran Associate Professor of International Relations London Met PhD graduate
Andrew Moran is an Associate Professor of International Relations at London Met and teaches on our International Relations MA. Back in 1993, he also studied a PhD at the University, when his studies took him to the home of President Gerald Ford. I came here in 1993 and did a PhD in American political history. I covered the 1970s, economic policy and presidential politics. I was then offered a teaching post in American politics. I progressed from there into American foreign policy and then international relations. I’ve worked for Great Ormond Street and WaterAid, both of which helped shape the way I view the world. When I was a PhD student I taught in universities across London. The students at other universities aren’t like the students here. The students here are extraordinary – they’re diverse, they come from all sorts of socioeconomic backgrounds, there’s an incredibly broad range of opinions, everybody challenges everybody else, everybody learns from everybody else – including me – and it’s incredibly rewarding. We have students who go on to work at really interesting places. I’ve had students who have gone on to work for the Cabinet Office, for the UN and in the media. They come here and we give them something that they don’t get anywhere else.
I had a fantastic supervisor for my PhD who was incredibly supportive – and I found the institution was incredibly supportive too. Half way through my PhD my son came along so I had to work to support myself as a student and my family. The University was very accommodating and supported me through that. My PhD was about American economic policy and the switch from Keynesian liberal economics, which had dominated from the 1940s and then began to ebb away in the 1970s, to the sort of neoliberalism we have now. It concentrated particularly on the presidency of Gerald Ford. The University enabled me to study that presidency, go to America and sit in a presidential library to research. I interviewed most of his staff, including the President of the United States of America himself. It’s an extraordinary time to study the world. There are major global shifts occurring. As an International Relations student you can step back and look at what President Trump is doing, look what’s happening with Brexit, and with North Korea and China. There are so many profound events happening and we don’t know where they’re going. I think the predictability of the world is diminishing – it’s a fascinating time. You can find out more about our International Relations MA on page 123.
