Algorithmic Design Techniques with Grasshopper* ne day a week for five O weeks September, January, March Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/ALG Taught by London-based architect and computational designer Andrea Bugli, this course is suitable for beginners with a basic knowledge of Rhino. We’ll introduce you to Grasshopper for Rhino – algorithmic design software that has enhanced the creativity of architects in recent years, enabling a much higher degree of complexity than traditional modeling – and let you transform conceptual diagrams into rigorous and detailed digital models ready to be manufactured. Practical design projects and exercises take you through everything from waffle structure systems to linking external parameters (such as sun analysis, site conditions) and more.

This course aims to give you an insight into the retail design process. You’ll cover everything from the initial research and survey of space to developing brand concepts and the brand personality through mood boards, design concepts, sketch models and presentations. You’ll also explore the new immersive and experiential spaces where website and place are connecting on the high street in London, and by the end of the course, you should have enhanced your professional skills. The course is also useful for those building a portfolio for entry to a relevant degree course.

If you’ve ever wanted to bring your drawings to life through three-dimensional and spatial design, this course will teach you how to give your sketches the illusion of form, volume and space. Taught by industry experts, you’ll be introduced to various techniques including one and two-point perspective, working with contour and cross-contour lines, light and shade effects, translating shape into 3D form and human figure sketching.

RIBA: Practice in the UK ne evening a week for O 10 weeks September, January, March Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/RIBAP This short course is designed for EU-qualified architects (covered by the Professional Qualifications Directive) who are working/preparing to work in the UK and for those returning to work after a career break. We are a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) continuing professional development (CPD) provider, and our courses are supported by a range of high-profile industry guest lecturers. You’ll be introduced to all aspects of working as an architect in the UK – from making appointments and setting fees to working with sub-consultants and the wider design team. You’ll also gain an understanding of construction industry constraints such as planning and managing health and safety, and risk. Sessions on professionalism, the roles of the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and RIBA, and an introduction to British law also form part of the course. This course does not lead to accreditation as an architect, but it covers similar ground to our RIBA Part 3 course (see londonmet.ac.uk/ PCPSARC3).

This course is designed to give those with an interest in interior design and architecture an opportunity to develop their drawing skills in sketchbook format. Through both studio workshops and location visits, you’ll be introduced to key media and processes that allow you to effectively record spaces and human presence. Highlights include visits to some of London’s major galleries and museums where you’ll sketch live interior situations and develop observational skills.

This course builds on the skills and techniques covered in the sketching course above. We’ll help you continue to develop your drawing skills in sketchbook format in response to live spaces. More specialist techniques are covered (such as working with two-point perspective and more complex viewpoints) as well as aiding your understanding of using key drawing media effectively. This course also includes weekly visits to some of London’s most exciting and prestigious museums and cultural spaces.

Leather Belt Making* hree consecutive days T July Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/LEATHB This hands-on course will introduce you to the craft of belt making as well as giving you an understanding of leathers and tools. It is a workshop-based course suitable for beginners that will introduce you to the skills used in bridlework. You’ll learn how to cut a leather strap accurately and use decorative tooling, as well as learn hand dyeing and finishing techniques. You’ll also understand about belt hardware and how it is fitted. Small class sizes and plenty of practical opportunities mean that most students come away with two belts and will have practised a variety of techniques, from riveting, stamping and edge staining to polishing.

Alternative Photographic Printmaking* ne day a week for five O weeks September, January, March Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/ALTPH Taught by renowned photographer, artist, teacher and co-founder of the lensbased Uncertain States collective, David George, this course (suitable for beginners and up) will help you develop skills in salt printing and silver gelatin printing, Photoshop for digital negatives, negative scanning, cyanotypes and Van Dyke Brown printing. You’ll explore these areas through talks, workshops and assignments, and evaluate and develop ideas through group discussion.

Documentary Street Photography – The City and The East End* ne day a week for five O weeks September, January, March Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/DOCPH Situated on the edge of the city and close to Brick Lane’s vibrant community, our location provides the ideal opportunity to explore the local architecture and street life of east London. Suitable for beginners and more advanced photographers, you’ll learn useful technical skills such as how to work portable flash systems and consider ethical issues such as the relationship between photographer and subject. We help develop your work through talks, workshops, assignments and group discussions. By the end of the course, you’ll have produced a coherent body of work and be able to shoot to a brief and edit your work for a defined purpose.

This introductory course is aimed at proficient photographers who want to deliver professional print products such as books and leaflets, combine text and images, and become familiar with the digital workflow for PDFs, interactive elements and web-based presentations.

Introduction to Black and White Photography* ne evening a week for O 10 weeks September, January, March Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/BWPHOT This practical course will introduce you to black and white analogue photography – from camera handling, shooting and developing film to darkroom practice. The course is creative and experimental with assignments that will encourage you to expand and develop your practice. The Cass has two fully-equipped professional darkrooms with a wide range of enlargers for both 35mm and medium format film. From manipulating light in different ways in order to make photograms, to dodging, paper sensitising and printing on resincoated paper, you’ll finish the course with a set of high-quality silver gelatin prints.

Discover the history, tradition and craft of colour photography in our professional colour darkrooms. This creative and experimental course fosters an appreciation and understanding of contemporary colour practice whilst developing your practical skills in areas such as correcting and manipulating colour and exposure, making contact prints, selecting and editing for print as well as darkroom techniques such as dodging and burning. You’ll explore the work of fine art photographers who specialise in analogue colour photography and learn colour techniques that you can also use in digital photography. Small class sizes mean that we can provide individual attention. You’ll be taught through talks, demonstrations and workshops, and your photographic skills will develop through assignments and discussion. Workshop materials are supplied and you’ll be advised on any appropriate materials that you need to buy. This course will give you an excellent introduction to the workings of the colour darkroom and you’ll finish with your own series of C-Type prints.

This course is an introduction to photography. The aim is to ensure a general all-round knowledge of both analogue and digital photographic techniques, with the objective being to make well-crafted and consistent photographs using a variety of techniques both in the darkroom and digitally. This course will help you become more confident with your picture making and act as an introduction to our other courses. You’ll finish with a strong understanding of the main genres of photography and the ability to develop your own style and interests.

Situated in urban London, our location provides the ideal opportunity to explore local architecture and river environments, which have a very particular and changed atmosphere in the evening. Work will be explored through a series of talks, workshops and assignments. You’ll acquire skills including how to understand and apply the zone system, metering, reciprocity failure for both analogue and digital systems, as well as Photoshop for architectural night photography including noise reduction, perspective correction, colour balance and image rendering. You’ll be encouraged to foster an individual and critical approach to image making, enabling you to edit images for a body of work.

Pathography – Photographic Self Portraiture ne afternoon a week for O eight weeks October, April, May Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/PATHOG Open to anyone interested in photography as a therapeutic tool, you’ll explore the use of photographic self portraiture as a tool for self-exploration. We’ll help to expand your artistic expression and develop self reflection through experimenting with both traditional and digital photographic methods. Tutor Spencer Rowell is a UKCP-registered practising psychodynamic psychotherapist and senior lecturer in photography. He will facilitate this process which is in nature experiential.


Specialist Black and White Darkroom Processes ne evening a week for O 10 weeks September, January, March Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/BWDARK This course offers you the opportunity to develop a range of advanced techniques that will improve your print quality and creative expression. It is a hands-on, practical course that will also address the place of analogue in contemporary photographic practice. It is aimed at those with a basic knowledge and understanding of darkroom practice and is an excellent follow-on course from our Introduction to Black and White Photography (see page 19). We have two fully equipped professional darkrooms with a wide range of enlargers for both 35mm and medium format film. You’ll learn how to improve print quality and judge the right grade and quality paper needed for the image, as well as specialist techniques such as Lith printing and liquid emulsion. You’ll be aiming to reach a high standard of print finishing and mounting for presentation and we encourage you to produce a series of work.

Studio Lighting ne evening a week for eight O weeks October, April Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/STULT This course offers an exciting opportunity to work with Spencer Rowell, who was a commercial photographer for over 35 years and has extensive experience in the most challenging studio work. You’ll learn how to construct light using continuous lighting, studio flash and portable flash. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore both still life and portraits, making use of a variety of lighting techniques that will be discussed within the context of both historic and contemporary practice. Assignments will be set and group discussions will provide a forum to develop your work further.

From fifteenth-century religious art to modern conceptual pieces, this short course will introduce you to the different styles, techniques and concepts of art to be found in London’s art galleries. We currently visit the National Gallery, Tate Britain, Estorick Collection, Tate Modern and Saatchi Gallery. Starting with the art of Sienna and Florence in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, this course follows the artistic development towards the Renaissance and continues through the centuries to the art of today.

Suitable for complete beginners, this course is designed to give you the skills and practical knowledge to create and print your own images in an easy way through linocut, woodcut and monoprinting techniques. Printmaking can be expensive and difficult if you don’t have access to a press or professional equipment. On this course, you’ll learn how to use different tools and discover accessible, non-toxic printmaking techniques, from mixing inks to creating textures, so that you’ll be able to create your own prints in your own studio/home without a press or expensive equipment.

Through demonstrations, guidance and practice, you’ll learn to confidently explore intaglio printmaking ideas and imagery to create a body of collagraph print works. You’ll make plates and printing both individually and as multi-plate prints, both in black and white and in colour, whilst learning how to mix ink, explore paper choices and understand the health and safety issues involved.

This three-day course will guide you through the processes involved in producing both contemporary and traditional lined covers. You’ll cover how to choose suitable fabrics, frame preparation and binding, plus fitting and application of the cover and lining. We’ll demonstrate how to make hand-crafted trimmings and you’ll complete a curved empire lampshade and also develop a comprehensive set of technical notes. This course is suitable for beginners who have basic hand sewing and machine skills.

This course is part of the AMUSF (Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers) professional qualification programme. We offer a unique learning experience, encouraging excellence and creativity within the University environment. It’s suitable for those wanting to work commercially, either as part of an upholstery or restoration business or for a hobby. You’ll be shown the stripping down process and how to revive and repair the chair frame where needed. The class will go through the six weaving stages and you’ll learn how to peg the completed seat, apply a beaded trim if appropriate and dye or wax it as necessary.

This course will give you an introduction to basic furniture making. You’ll be taught at The Cass, which has a long history of teaching furniture and upholstery courses, and you’ll explore the safe use of a range of power tools, different construction techniques and basic furniture forms. The course is designed to broaden your understanding of the subject and materials, building from initial tool use to give you the necessary skills to design and make your own furniture. Class sizes are small and teaching is mostly workshop-based, with practical demonstrations and handouts.

This course is designed to extend furniture-making skills that have been acquired on our Introduction to Furniture Making course (shown to the left). Highlights of your practical hands-on sessions include the making of cutting lists, surface preparation and hand finishing. It is designed to build your confidence in using hand tools, give you an understanding of construction and introduce you to basic safe use of fixed machinery and portable power tools.

This short course will introduce you to the basic construction methods, traditional materials and methods that have been used for several centuries in traditional upholstery. Highlights include hand stitching, the covering of materials and other upholstery techniques. The course is in the main practically orientated and you will be guided through up to two set assignments, one of which is a small stool that you can take away and keep as a souvenir. The course fees include the cost of materials.

During this course you’ll learn the basics of working in wire for jewellery. Wire is a lively and exciting material with endless possibilities for design. You’ll solder with probe, paste and pallion, draw and anneal wire, twist and wrap wire, and make jumprings and loop-in-loop chain, emerging with a finished piece such as a ring or bracelet you’ve designed.

For complete beginners, the initial series of sessions concentrates on sharpening and hand-tool techniques, and applying these skills to guitar neck construction and soundboard, ribs and back preparation, ready for your instrument to be constructed in subsequent classes. Every student works at a different pace, but with prior woodwork experience and regular attendance, it is possible to make a full guitar in one year (30 weeks), though some students can take two or even three years to complete an instrument. You’ll be taught by the internationally renowned guitar maker, player and doctoral researcher Nick Pyall.

Learn to play the Daf – Introduction* ne evening a week for O six weeks October, January, May Aldgate londonmet.ac.uk/DAF1 This unusual course will teach you how to play the daf (the Kurdish frame drum) – both as a solo player and in an ensemble. The daf, partly because of its light weight and powerful sound, is one of the most useful instruments in the world music scene, and one of the easiest instruments to learn. Initially you’ll be taught how to play the basic strokes but this will be followed by exercises on a traditional 4/4 rhythm. Techniques taught include how to play the three basic strokes and learning to play a traditional rhythm. You’ll be assessed


during the class and if you reach an appropriate standard, you’ll have the opportunity to perform in a concert at the end of the course. You’ll also receive a certificate. Please bring your own daf to the course.

If you would like to learn the skills of a gilder or refresh or extend existing art, craft or restoration skills, this is an opportunity to do so. You’ll be taught by a specialist in restoration and conservation practice, Professor Alex Schouvaloff. The course includes hands-on workshops, allowing you to explore key materials and techniques, from gesso ground, use of bole and practical water to oil gilding and burnishing. This course is aimed at anyone with prior knowledge of 3D modelling who would like to take their designs further and explore the exciting world of 3D printing. You’ll gain knowledge of the different 3D printing systems available today and their specific design requirements for production, as well as tips and tricks including how to export for 3D printing. You’ll get to develop a design of your choice for production on one of our rapid prototyping machines, including SLS (Selective Laser Sintering), Z Corp 3D printing and Envisiontec Perfactory printing. You can either use 3D Studio Max or Rhino in our CAD suite to develop your model for 3D printing.

This course introduces you to the techniques of programming audio apps for iOS, the operating system used on the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. While the teaching material can be applied to the iPhone and iPod Touch, the focus in the course will be on the iPad. You’ll become familiar with the Xcode development environment and apply your existing skills to developing audio-based apps for iOS. At the end of the course, you’ll be able to design and build touch-based iPad apps that generate, record and play audio. Subject knowledge enhancement courses (SKEs) are about improving subject knowledge in preparation for a teacher training course.

You will be taught by experienced mathematics teachers, and will spend two of the 12 weeks in a school with opportunities to apply your subject knowledge. We use interactive methods to help you learn mathematics, and you’ll form links with colleagues, which is invaluable when you progress to a PGCE or other teacher training programme. This course is available to PGCE offer holders at London Met or at other universities whose offer stipulates completion of a subject knowledge enhancement course.


Social Work *courses that are suitable for beginners

Practice Education (Stages 1 and 2) ne year part-time (day) O September Holloway londonmet.ac.uk/PRACED If you are a practicing social worker with at least two years of experience, then this course will enable you to learn how to supervise, teach and assess social work students up to and including their last placement. The course has been designed to conform to the professional requirements and competencies for Stage 1 and 2 (combined) of the Practice Educator Professional standards for Social Work (PEPS), (TCSW, 2012). On completion, you’ll have the authority and capability to recommend, using appropriate evidence, whether your students are fit to practice once qualified. London Met is the preferred provider of social work in 2017 for the North East London commissioning panel, representing the Social Work Development Partnership of five local authorities, ensuring teaching excellence and access to a ready-made network of other social work professionals.

Hoping for a career in the police service? This professionally accredited course, taught by experienced former police operatives, covers the essential knowledge required to become a police constable. London Met has been approved by the College of Policing to run this course and it incorporates all of the national mandatory learning requirements to achieve the equivalent of the Certificate of Knowledge of Policing (CKP), an essential component of the national Pre-join Strategy. Passing the assessments leads not only to a transcript that you submit with your application to join the police service, but also to Level 4 credit towards an undergraduate degree in police studies, should you decide to apply after this course. From providing initial support to victims and witnesses to undertaking interviews, gathering and submitting evidence to searching individuals and vehicles, this is a wide-ranging and intensive course.

It will extend your knowledge base in relation to the sexual exploitation of children and young people, covering definitions, prevalence, intervention and protection, managing perpetrators, policy and legislation. Historical continuities in the form and nature of sexual exploitation will be examined in a national and international context. Particular examples of exploitation such as trafficking, prostitution and pornography will be analysed. You’ll benefit from the expertise of internationally renowned specialists in the field including Professor Liz Kelly CBE and Dr Maddy Coy.

You’ll develop critical research and debating skills, and benefit from the expertise of internationally renowned specialists in the field including Professor Liz Kelly CBE and Dr Maddy Coy.

Violence Against Women: Issues, Research and Policy wo days each fortnight over T 11 weeks (six days total) October Holloway londonmet.ac.uk/VIOLW This comprehensive course, delivered by specialist lecturers including the internationally renowned feminist researcher Professor Liz Kelly CBE, can give credit towards our Woman and Child Abuse MA. It is designed for those working in specialised services for women and children who have experienced violence, policy makers or those hoping to work in these sectors. We’ll introduce you to research on multiple forms of violence, and the prevalence and consequences of these, including intimate partner violence, rape and sexual assault, sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation (FGM) and honour crimes.
