* All PGCE courses at London Metropolitan University lead to either a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) or a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE); both qualifications lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The difference in award title is determined by the two final academic assignments, each of which can be awarded Honours level credits or Master’s level credits, depending on the quality of the work submitted. Trainees gaining Master’s level credits in both academic assignments will be awarded the Post Graduate qualification; others will gain the Professional Graduate qualification. Your university transcript will show how many Master’s level credits you have gained and you may be able to transfer 30 or 60 credits into any future Master’s programme you pursue.
Student Profiles
“
Choosing to complete my teacher training at London Metropolitan was the best career decision I ever made. Studying in the heart of London while being surrounded by a diverse body of staff and students was exactly the preparation I needed for teaching in inner London secondary schools. London Met’s commitment to tackling the challenging issues surrounding modern urban education was, I believe, a key factor in my rapid progression to the position of Head of Department after just four years of teaching. Having gained a unique insight into the value of teacher education throughout my undergraduate studies, I then embarked on a Master’s in Education, again with London Met. After successfully completing this, I am now in my eighth year in the profession and currently considering an EdD.

Aaron Call PGCE Secondary Music
“ My main motivation for choosing London Metropolitan University to study teaching through the PGCE Secondary Music Education course, was the fact that I personally felt there was nowhere on earth more diverse to train. Having previously travelled the globe and lived in both Australia and New Zealand, I have experienced life as a migrant, yet never witnessed anywhere that rivals London’s variety. With every nationality in the world represented, and its welcoming and liberal attitude towards people of all faiths and creeds, I feel privileged to have studied in the environment of the most multicultural city in the world.”
“ The support and guidance I received from the mentoring staff in the Education Department was of immense help in my return to the classroom. The subject specific training and the personal guidance enabled me to build week by week on my placement experience, and to find and develop my own style as a teacher.

After many years teaching, I still make use of the many teaching strategies I was taught during my very enjoyable year at London Met.”
“ London Met was very proactive in providing support and guidance for my new teaching post. The team educated me on everything necessary to prepare me for my forthcoming post; they are highly skilled professionals who were able to support me through my interview process as well as answer any queries regarding the teaching industry. With regards to course content, I felt everything covered during lectures and the professional studies sessions were relevant to my development and future prospects as a teacher as the course supported my learning over the year.”

“ I did not know too much about the PGCE course at London Met before starting, but I have been pleasantly surprised. The course is well-structured and gives a solid grounding in the pedagogical disciplines needed for a career in teaching. However the highlight for me has been the quality of the subject tutors. All the tutors I have worked with have been highly knowledgable, approachable and more than capable of pushing students to reach their potential as future teachers.”

“ Ever since my first day at London Met I have noticed changes in myself from my confidence developing to becoming a professional in the field of teaching. I have always had a passion for Biology and at London Met I am slowly starting to show that. I get so much support from my tutor, colleagues and the London Met team helping me every step of the way. The University itself has a good vibe, very social and also welcoming. I just want to thank everyone for everything!”
“ I really enjoyed my course at London Metropolitan. It was a very intense year, but the support and guidance from my tutor and mentors was excellent throughout, and by the end of the course I really felt I was prepared to take on my first mainstream teaching assignment. The tutors and lecturers have helped me setting the right goals for my development as a teacher as well as giving me the tools to succeed. I had two great school placements arranged by the University, which I feel were key to building my confidence. Finally, I was really happy to be offered a job by one of these schools – my PGCE year couldn’t have ended better.”
From one of our partner schools “ Millfields Community School has been working with London Metropolitan University for many years. We have hosted approximately 50 students over the last three years alone and have found that they arrive at Millfields with great enthusiasm. The University ensures there is clarity in regard to requirements and expectations, and both students and mentors have access to the same documents enabling them to experience a seamless transition into placements. The students arrive well prepared and keen to get involved in school life. They are proactive in regard to their own learning, they are sensitive to school needs and processes and they make good relationships with staff, pupils and parents from the outset. The students are grounded with a good understanding of the education system and the differences faced by teachers when teaching in diverse, inner city London schools. We find that students from London Met are an asset to our teaching profile whilst they are with us and we know that they help us to raise standards through their commitment to the pupils and the school.
