the legendary new york graffiti artist from the 70’s and 80’s About Duster in his own words: “It was at the age of 12 that I began noticing names on the trains that ran past my block. The same block where they showed me and Seen painting the wall in Style Wars.Names like Skull 2, Bandit, Dean and E5 etc. It wasn’t long after, me and a friend of mine went about 7 blocks uptown to the train yard, just to peep it out. We got caught by a cop, of course it was day time. What did we know? We were only 12. Coming from a strict family it kind of put a dampner on things, but not for long. Two years later I started doing my first 2 tone panel pieces and then it was on... Then throughout the years, I started to meet people like Henry Chalfant and later Martha Cooper. Henry had introduced me to Dolores Neuman (RIP), who taught me about the fine arts. The Metropolitian Museum of Art purchased a painting of mine and one in Kallamazoo Michigan, then off to Christies on Park Ave. Then a few gallery shows... It didn’t take long for everyone to claim that they were graffiti artists but they’d never even painted on trains. So they would one day sell a painting for $5000 and be broke by the end of the week and get desperate and start selling for whatever they can get. So the Art Collectors started to worry if graffiti was worth investing in. Dolores explained to me how I was only 22 and that the average artists selling through the galleries are 40 and up. So I said fine and came to California and painted because of the love of the art not the money. For sure I didn’t see any of it so, as a job to pay the little bills, I became a well known tattoo artist in Hollywood and now so many have jumped on that band wagon. In my prime, I’m coming back to see if the art world is ready for me now.” For more information about Duster UA or to purchase any of Duster’s artwork please contact: Sales@londonmiles.com www.londonmiles.com
