Exhibition catalog 2010

LONDON MILES GALLERY in association with UPPER PLAYGROUND are delighted to present a new exhibition featuring the culturally defining and visually astounding artwork of three artists from the furthest flung corners of the globe. Boasting a line-up of truly stellar international talent, this show will feature all new artworks from world-renowned and internationally recognised new contemporary artists Morning Breath, Ekundayo, and Fernando Chamarelli. This exciting three-way exhibition explicitly highlights the creative depth and diversity within the new contemporary field today, showcased exclusively for a British audience at London Miles Gallery in west London at the heart of the city’s sub cultural art community. A major coup for British audiences, this anticipated show brings three of the most prolific and abundantly talented new contemporary artists to the UK for what is a rare and insightful close up with some of the leading lights of the genre. Considered one of America’s finest creative studio’s for innovative and influential design, Morning Breath, aka design duo Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto, have established themselves as torchbearers for the US counterculture with their work for the likes of Queens Of The Stone Age, Kanye West, TV on the Radio, Them Crooked Vultures and AFI to name but a few. Also enlisted by apparel giants Stussy, Vans, MTV and bleeding-edge label/art house Upper Playground, Morning Breath’s work is fast becoming a totem of subcultural credibility within the hyper-commercialized industries of music and fashion. Joining them, and fresh from his solo exhibition at Los Angeles Thinkspace Gallery this summer, Hawaiiborn artist Ekundayo will be exhibiting his fiercely affecting pop-surrealist works in the UK for the first time. Our trio of new contemporary exponents is completed by the immensely talented Brazilian artist, illustrator, and graphic designer, Fernando Chamarelli.

MORNING BREATH

Morning Breath is Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto. In 1996, the two worked together on skateboard designs at Think Skateboards in San Francisco. There, they discovered they had similar tastes and influences, many of which were associated with the late 70s and early 80s. These included everything from sniffing glue and punk rock to racking paint and hip hop. In 2002, Cunningham and Noto formalized their partnership with the creation of Morning Breath, a creative studio located in Brooklyn. Since Then, their collaborations have grown beyond skateboard graphics to include, music packaging, apparel, poster design and more. The two have also been part of many showings of their personal work. Today, Doug and Jason split their creative energies and time between commercial and personal work. In 2006, their first book was published: The Early Bird – The Art and Design of Morning Breath. They have also had much of their work published worlwide in many design magazines and books, Most recently -Dirty Fingernails (rockport publishers 2009)

EKUNDAYO

Ploughing a distinctive furrow within the realms of the contemporary grotesque genre, Ekundayo’s work combines both a subversive graffiti aesthetic with art-historical erudition to produce textured, transitory portraits full of movement and character using a combination of acrylics, gouache, watercolour, and ink - on occasion, literally carving his paintings from the viscous combination of these materials.

FERNANDO CHAMARELLI

Explosively colourful and instantly recognizable for the seamless combination of organic forms with a modern, graphic sensibility, Chamarelli’s intricate and finely detailed paintings, while instantly striking, reward even closer attention to detail, not least to the abundant iconography hidden within many of his pieces. The strong influence of Colombian indigenous art, ancient philosophy, and a general reverence for the natural world are all counterbalanced by the use of the many mazy, geometric patterns, harmoniously resolving the traditionalist/modernist binary. It is this combination of the ethereal with the empirical that affords such depth and intrigue to Chamarelli’s timeless works. Chamarelli was the selected Brazillian artist to design the shirt as part of the UMBRO world champion collection for the 2010 world cup. He has also been featured on the Saatchi site and various other international magazines. Just google his name for the proof.
