The London Mozart Players is delighted to launch the 2012/13 season with a new short composition by its Associate Composer Roxanna Panufnik, marking the continuing development of this creative partnership. NEW QUEEN’S HALL ORCHESTRA Handel’s Messiah (Edition: Ebenezer Prout 1902) Conductor

Richard Cook

Royal Choral Society and Soloists ‘What the English like is something that they can beat time to, something that hits them straight on the drum of the ear’. Handel often hid his genius behind a simplicity that strikes a chord in the modern listener. Indeed, his standing was such that Beethoven said, ‘Handel is the greatest and ablest of all composers: I can still learn from him’. Messiah is Handel’s crowning glory. Based on texts taken from the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer his most famous oratorio deals with the prophesies of Christ’s coming, of his Birth, Passion and Resurrection and ends with His glorification in heaven. To hear a large body of voices supported by an orchestra of appropriate instruments is an opportunity to hear Handel’s best-loved work as it was given before the emotional impact of the music became secondary to the dry and dusty need for editorial authenticity. In recent decades there have been numerous attempts at recreating early performances of Messiah, even though Handel never settled on his choice of instruments or which of the new items he added after its premiere should be included or left out. In this concert, the world-famous Royal Choral Society will be joined for the first time by the New Queen’s Hall Orchestra in a performance that will echo the large-scale events of Victorian times best known to us in recordings from Sir Malcolm Sargent’s day.

Violin Concerto Symphony No. 5

LMP’s season finale features two iconic masterpieces from Beethoven, that gives the spotlight to the last of the concerti in LMP’s season-long celebration of the violin. LMP is delighted to be joined by pre-eminent British violinist Anthony Marwood, praised for his ‘exquisitely controlled tenderness and musicianship’ (The Spectator), who performs one of the most beautiful and celebrated violin concertos in the repertoire. Beethoven’s everpopular, rousing Fifth Symphony completes this special programme conducted by LMP’s Music Director Gérard Korsten. £12 - £31.50. Subscription Series prices - page 31
