Welcome... to the London Mozart Players’ 2009/10 Croydon season. This brochure covers the entire season, so please keep it safe for future reference! This season sees a mix of familiar and new faces at Fairfield: Howard Shelley and Sir James Galway are both celebrating their birthday with the LMP; conductors David Stern and Joseph Swensen return for sizzling concerts; catch young talents Polina Leschenko, David Lefèvre and Jakub Hrusa, three major rising stars; and join poet Roger McGough as he narrates Carnival of the Animals with his own poems. All concerts take place in Fairfield Halls, with its beautiful acoustic and central location, with easy access from motorway, buses, trains and trams. Simon Funnell, Managing Director London Mozart Players Suite 26, Suffolk House College Road, Croydon CR0 1PE Tel: 020 8686 1996 Fax: 020 8686 2187 Email: info@lmp.org www.lmp.org Registered in England No. 1870034 Registered Charity No. 290833

Pre-concert Conversations Before every concert, at 6.15pm, the LMP’s Managing Director, Simon Funnell hosts a lively pre-concert conversation with conductors, soloists and LMP musicians, free to concert ticket-holders. Whether you are new to classical music, or just want to know more, these conversations are the ideal way to get closer to the music and the musicians; and because a conversation should be a two-way thing, whenever possible we’ll give you a chance to ask a question too!

Free tickets for children If you would like to bring one or more children to our concerts, free tickets are available for under-18s if you purchase at least one full-price ticket. This offer is only available on the day of the concert by phoning or calling in person at the Fairfield Box Office and is subject to availability. For more details go to www.lmp.org

Polina Leschenko

Wednesday 21 October 2009, 7.30pm Conductor Piano

Joseph Swensen Polina Leschenko

Mendelssohn Schumann Beethoven

The Hebrides Overture Piano Concerto in A minor Symphony No. 7

Michael Collins

Polina Leschenko is a rising star, acclaimed by the Manchester Evening News because “her special ability to make every phrase speak to the listener made you hear the music as if new-minted, almost from the start”. She returns to Fairfield, again with Joseph Swensen conducting: last year the combination of these two major young talents resulted in a thrilling collaboration. Schumann’s Piano Concerto is preceded by Mendelssohn’s atmospheric The Hebrides Overture and after the interval Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony with its rapturous final movement will end this opening concert of the season on a high!

David Stern Michael Collins

Schubert Mozart Beethoven

Symphony No. 5 Clarinet Concerto, K622 Symphony No. 6 Pastoral

Michael Collins is one of world’s best clarinettists and according to The Daily Telegraph Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto is in good hands: “This is a fine performance of Mozart’s beloved concerto, Collins using the proper basset clarinet, creating some beautiful woody sounds, and touching the depths in the adagio.” Schubert’s Fifth Symphony, written when the composer was only 19, is a work strongly influenced by Haydn and Mozart. Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony dramatically depicts through music a day in the countryside, with gentle pastoral scenes of spring and summer finally interrupted by a late-night thunderstorm – the perfect refuge from the British winter.

Howard Shelley

Rossini

The Italian Girl in Algiers Overture Piano Concerto No. 5 Emperor Symphony No. 7

Beethoven Dvorˇák

Howard Shelley has been associated with the LMP for over 30 years. As a former Associate Conductor he has performed a huge number of concerts, and recorded CDs, with the orchestra. This concert marks Shelley’s 60th birthday and the LMP is delighted to celebrate it with him in a programme of his favourite pieces. Beethoven’s majestic Emperor Piano Concerto is one of the most popular and enduring works in the piano repertoire, whilst Dvorˇák’s Symphony No. 7, commissioned for a London orchestra, is one of the composer’s most ambitious and romantic works.

Jakub Hrusa

François-Frédéric Guy

Owain Arwel Hughes

Saturday 24 April 2010, 7.30pm Conductor Cello

Owain Arwel Hughes Thomas Carroll

Beethoven Haydn Beethoven

Egmont Overture Cello Concerto in C Symphony No. 3 Eroica

Some works have defined music history and Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony is one of them. It marked a turning point in symphonic writing and set the bar for symphonic composition. The piece also reflects history as Beethoven originally gave it the title “Bonaparte” as a tribute to Napoleon, whom he admired. On hearing that Napoleon had been made Emperor of France, however, the composer changed his mind, and furiously scribbled out the dedication so fiercely that he made a hole in the front of the score. This dramatic work is preceded by Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C, performed by Thomas Carroll, a finalist of the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year competition.

Saturday 15 May 2010, 7.30pm Conductor Piano

Gérard Korsten François-Frédéric Guy

Dvorˇák Mozart Beethoven

Serenade for strings Piano Concerto No. 21, K467 Symphony No. 1

“His performance went down very well indeed”, The Independent noted after François-Frédéric Guy’s performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. We are certain you will feel the same tonight with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, famously used as the theme from the film Elvira Madigan. This work is framed by Dvorˇák’s Serenade for Strings and Beethoven’s First Symphony. Gérard Korsten returns to Fairfield to conduct after many exhilarating performances with the LMP in the last few seasons!
