London Philharmonic Orchestra 2012/13 Concert Season Congress Theatre, Eastbourne eastbournetheatres.co.uk
Celebrating 80 years of the London Philharmonic Orchestra
Welcome to the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2012/13 season
In 2012/13 the Orchestra is proud to celebrate its 80th anniversary season and we are happy to return for what will be our 17th season of concerts at the Congress Theatre. We are delighted to bring the very best conductors and artists to perform with us in Eastbourne; our Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Vladimir Jurowski returns to conduct in December and Nicholas Collon revisits in May, following his successful début in Eastbourne last year. Highlights of this season include an all-Russian opening concert featuring works by Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky; Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto performed by Jamie Walton; and magnificent symphonies throughout the year including Beethoven’s Eroica and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2. As ever, we are proud to continue fostering young talent. In 2012/13 we are joined by pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, finalist in the 2004 BBC Young Musician of the Year; pianist Dimitri Mayboroda, winner of the International Piano Festival in St Petersburg; and violinist Jarosław Nadrzycki, First Prize winner of the Aram Khachaturian, George Enescu and Jascha Heifetz International Violin Competitions. We hope you will join us for what promises to be the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s most exciting season of concerts in Eastbourne yet.

Sunday 7 October 2012 | 3.00pm Congress Theatre, Eastbourne TCHAIKOVSKY 1812 Overture RACHMANINOFF Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade
DARRELL ANG conductor DiMITRI MAYBORODA piano Devilish, exotic and sumptuous, Scheherazade and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini are two of the most colourful and captivating orchestral tapestries ever conceived. As Rachmaninoff’s glistening piano dances its way through a series of mind-bending variations, Rimsky-Korsakov depicts a beautiful princess who can only delay her own death by entertaining the executioner with tales of love, bravery and tragedy. Joining these magnificent orchestral masterworks is another Russian gem, Tchaikovsky’s spectacular 1812 Overture – a fitting curtain-raiser to the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s most exciting season of concerts in Eastbourne yet.

Sunday 28 October 2012 | 3.00pm Congress Theatre, Eastbourne TCHAIKOVSKY Serenade for Strings SAINT-SAËNS Cello Concerto No. 2 ˇ ÁK Symphony No. 8 DVOR
After the success in London of his magnificent Seventh Symphony, Dvorˇák’s English hosts persuaded him to write another. In his Eighth, the composer created a piece that he believed was ‘different from the other symphonies, with individual thoughts worked out in a new way’. What followed was a rich and unbridled flow of inspiring melody – without the insistent and thrusting debate of the Seventh but certainly lacking none of its charm. A blend of the proud and the playful characterises Camille SaintSaëns’s Second Cello Concerto, a challenging piece for any cellist but one that is sure to exude effortless grace in the hands of Jamie Walton.

Anton Bruckner was always proud of his First Symphony – of its impish charm and confident bravura. He even gave it a racy little nickname. But deep down he knew his strong, impetuous work would need little verbal bolstering. In reality, it would impress anyone who heard it – a bold statement to herald the launch of one of the greatest symphonic careers. Before it, in this concert, comes one of Mozart’s most charming concertos including a gregarious and catchy finale that presents variations on a tune said to have been whistled by the composer’s pet starling. Brahms’s imposing overture opens this concert led by the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Jurowski.

Sunday 27 January 2013 | 3.00pm Congress Theatre, Eastbourne MENDELSSOHN Hebrides Overture MOZART Clarinet Concerto BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3 (Eroica)
When Beethoven gave birth to what is arguably his most important symphony, he didn’t just feel the art of music changing, he felt his own body changing too. The composer had sensed his hearing failing, and in an emotional letter to his brothers, declared himself determined to overcome the challenges that lay at his feet. The Eroica Symphony is the musical manifestation of that determination: a self-propelling, heroic and inspiring tour-de-force whose concert hall effect borders on the overpowering. It stands in utter contrast to the autumnal bronzes and browns of Mozart’s late Clarinet Concerto, a piece from the dusk of the composer’s career that feels almost like a goodbye.

Sunday 17 March 2013 | 3.00pm Congress Theatre, Eastbourne IRELAND A London Overture BRUCH Violin Concerto No. 1 SIBELIUS Symphony No. 2
MARK FITZ-GERALD conductor JAROSŁAW NADRZYCKI violin In Max Bruch’s radiant Violin Concerto, it’s a single instrument that captures you – the weave of one violin as it floats, battles and rhapsodises against an orchestral mass that sometimes supports, sometimes cajoles and sometimes contradicts. Sibelius’s Second Symphony, by contrast, sees the orchestra striving as one, discovering a hymn-like tune that it proclaims with inspiring unity and breadth, as if lifting the entire ensemble far beyond the sum of its parts. Opening the concert the Orchestra celebrates the work of John Ireland with his vibrant London Overture. Reminiscent of Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture, it evokes sleepy London mornings and the bustling city streets of the day. Mark Fitz-Gerald and the brilliant young Polish violinist Jarosław Nadrzycki come to Eastbourne for what promises to be a truly inspiring concert.

Sunday 19 May 2013 | 3.00pm Congress Theatre, Eastbourne WAGNER Overture, Die Meistersinger SCHUMANN Piano Concerto WAGNER Siegfried Idyll BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5
NICHOLAS COLLON conductor BENJAMIN GROSVENOR piano A concert that has it all: embracing majesty, inspiring warmth, flashing virtuosity, touching romance and fortifying revolution. Be swept along by the processing glory of Wagner’s Overture to Die Meistersinger and the rapturous sweep of Schumann’s heartfelt Piano Concerto. Next comes utterly different Wagner; the intimate strains of the piece he arranged to be played on his wife’s birthday morning, Siegfried Idyll. To end, one of the most iconic pieces in all music: Beethoven’s musical vision of fate, his proclamation of victory over tyranny and fate – the ever-surprising and exhilarating Fifth Symphony.
