A review of the last 18 months

Commissions We commission around 20 new works every year. In 2013 this included Renewal – young British composer Luke Bedford’s first piece for extended ensemble. “Renewal was well served for its world premiere by the London Sinfonietta who executed the minute adjustments of tempo and timbre with precision and brilliance.” ***** The Guardian

Collaborations Every year an estimated 500,000 people listen to us on the radio, and last summer we joined The Stranglers, Laura Marling and Cerys Matthews for the first ever mash up between BBC Radio 3 and 6 Music. A sold-out audience of 6,000 watched the Late Night Prom live at the Royal Albert Hall. “Listening to The Stranglers and the London Sinfonietta from last night’s Proms. Whose idea was THAT? Great stuff.” @TWhittermarsh

Premieres We brought 38 world and UK premieres to British audiences over the last 18 months, including 21 works we commissioned. “Georg Friedrich Haas’ in vain, definitely one to see before you die. Making new music part of people’s lives New music can inspire, challenge and engage you. We want to share our passion for new music with audiences of all ages and from all walks of life. We believe that hearing it, making it and performing it with us will change people and communities. UK touring At The World’s Edge was developed by Anna Jones, Elspeth Brooke and Seonaid Goody on our interdisciplinary Blue Touch Paper programme, and in summer 2013 we toured it to Salisbury, Norfolk & Norwich and Spitalfields Music festivals.

KX Collective The KX Collective – a group of young people from the Kings Cross area – met during half-terms and collaboratively composed a new suite Sub Sections, performing the world premiere at The Forge, Camden. “I had such a fantastic time and learnt so much about beats, styles, new notes and composing.” KX Collective participant

Public participation Last summer we asked the public to RSVP with a piece of new music on a postcard. 355 submissions from 170 people in 20 countries later, our Principal Players chose 3 winners and performed their postcards at Kings Place. KX Collective

Our Facebook community has increased by 193% and Twitter followers by 115% through innovative, intriguing campaigns around every event. This reach brings new audiences to see us live – on average 33% of our bookers are brand new to Southbank Centre each season.

We champion the unusual, groundbreaking and extraordinary; providing a research space for artists, students, audiences and businesses to learn, create, play and experiment with the ideas and sounds of the new. Writing the Future 11 emerging composers have workshopped new chamber pieces with our musicians over the last year, which we’ve premiered at our annual New Music Show. “The London Sinfonietta are up for anything. They’re very good at getting into the mindset of a composer, working out exactly what you’re going for and adjusting accordingly.” Matthew Kaner, Writing The Future composer

New music is constantly evolving. We inspire and support the brilliant and dedicated young artists who will compose, perform and produce new music in the future through training and professional opportunities, sharing over 45 years of experience. Emerging Artists Programme Each season over 20 young professionals are given real working opportunities alongside our Principal Players through the Emerging Artists Programme. “Some of the experiences we have in the London Sinfonietta are so different from the musical life in other orchestras and ensembles. There is no better way to pass these on to the next generation of players than by sitting on a stage and playing together with them.” Alastair Mackie, Principal Trumpet

Blue Touch Paper In the second year of Blue Touch Paper, 3 composers collaborated with a writer, artist and director to create interdisciplinary work that we previewed at Village Underground in East London.

London Sinfonietta Academy We trained 28 musicians and 3 conductors in our fifth annual London Sinfonietta Academy course, conducted by George Benjamin. “A week of great music making, inspiration and fun. I have come out at the other end as a more confident performer with added motivation to keep improving.” Mana Shibata, Academy oboe student

Side-by-side Over 200 young musicians and conductors were trained, coached or performed side-by-side with us at Southbank Centre. “The London Sinfonietta and Royal Academy of Music’s Manson Ensemble…pulled off a remarkable feat of ensemble, precision and sheer virtuoso performing skills.” **** The Times

Making new music part of people’s lives New music can inspire, challenge and engage you. We want to share our passion for new music with audiences of all ages and from all walks of life. We believe that hearing it, making it and performing it with us will change people and communities. UK touring At The World’s Edge was developed by Anna Jones, Elspeth Brooke and Seonaid Goody on our interdisciplinary Blue Touch Paper programme, and in summer 2013 we toured it to Salisbury, Norfolk & Norwich and Spitalfields Music festivals.

KX Collective The KX Collective – a group of young people from the Kings Cross area – met during half-terms and collaboratively composed a new suite Sub Sections, performing the world premiere at The Forge, Camden. “I had such a fantastic time and learnt so much about beats, styles, new notes and composing.” KX Collective participant

Public participation Last summer we asked the public to RSVP with a piece of new music on a postcard. 355 submissions from 170 people in 20 countries later, our Principal Players chose 3 winners and performed their postcards at Kings Place. KX Collective

Making new music Nurturing the in new ways artists who make new music New music is diverse and suprising. We champion the unusual, groundbreaking and extraordinary; providing a research space for artists, students, audiences and businesses to learn, create, play and experiment with the ideas and sounds of the new. Writing the Future 11 emerging composers have workshopped new chamber pieces with our musicians over the last year, which we’ve premiered at our annual New Music Show. “The London Sinfonietta are up for anything. New music is constantly evolving. We inspire and support the brilliant and dedicated young artists who will compose, perform and produce new music in the future through training and professional opportunities, sharing over 45 years of experience. Emerging Artists Programme Each season over 20 young professionals are given real working opportunities alongside our Principal Players through the Emerging Artists Programme. “Some of the experiences we have in the London Sinfonietta are so different from the musical life in other orchestras and ensembles. Blue Touch Paper In the second year of Blue Touch Paper, 3 composers collaborated with a writer, artist and director to create interdisciplinary work that we previewed at Village Underground in East London.

London Sinfonietta Academy We trained 28 musicians and 3 conductors in our fifth annual London Sinfonietta Academy course, conducted by George Benjamin. “A week of great music making, inspiration and fun. Commissions We commission around 20 new works every year. In 2013 this included Renewal – young British composer Luke Bedford’s first piece for extended ensemble. “Renewal was well served for its world premiere by the London Sinfonietta who executed the minute adjustments of tempo and timbre with precision and brilliance.” ***** The Guardian

Collaborations Every year an estimated 500,000 people listen to us on the radio, and last summer we joined The Stranglers, Laura Marling and Cerys Matthews for the first ever mash up between BBC Radio 3 and 6 Music. A sold-out audience of 6,000 watched the Late Night Prom live at the Royal Albert Hall. “Listening to The Stranglers and the London Sinfonietta from last night’s Proms. Whose idea was THAT? International touring
