Making new music happen
A review of the last 18 months
Commissions We commission around 20 new works every year. In 2013 this included Renewal – young British composer Luke Bedford’s first piece for extended ensemble. “Renewal was well served for its world premiere by the London Sinfonietta who executed the minute adjustments of tempo and timbre with precision and brilliance.” ***** The Guardian
Collaborations Every year an estimated 500,000 people listen to us on the radio, and last summer we joined The Stranglers, Laura Marling and Cerys Matthews for the first ever mash up between BBC Radio 3 and 6 Music. A sold-out audience of 6,000 watched the Late Night Prom live at the Royal Albert Hall. “Listening to The Stranglers and the London Sinfonietta from last night’s Proms. Whose idea was THAT? Great stuff.” @TWhittermarsh
Premieres We brought 38 world and UK premieres to British audiences over the last 18 months, including 21 works we commissioned. “Georg Friedrich Haas’ in vain, definitely one to see before you die. Thank you @Ldn_Sinfonietta.” @TomKilw Georg Friedrich Haas and conductor Emilio Pomàrico. Photo © Hildegard Titus
We performed to over 9,000 people in one week, having co-commissioned Steve Reich to compose a work inspired by Radiohead.
