LOOK AGAIN AT THE WAY YOU LISTEN New music has been our passion for over 50 years. We also have a passion for reaching new audiences and presenting new ways to listen. So, this season we feature concerts which tell the story behind the music, commissions that make links with other artforms and projects that involve the public as participants. With touring and exciting staged projects in association with Music Theatre Wales, we can reach more people around the UK. In addition, the launch of our New Music Channel in January will enable more people around the world to experience our work. With video and podcast series about composers and artists, the channel will also relay exclusive online concerts of recent performances and commissions.

Along with our vital work in schools and our initiatives to develop talent in early-career composers and musicians, we aim to make new music a vibrant part of contemporary society. We are hugely grateful to Arts Council England and all those who play the lottery, as well as the sponsors, trusts, foundations and individuals who invest in our work, helping us to achieve this aim. ONLINE EVENTS TANSY DAVIES/ NICK DRAKE: CAVE

Following the success of their first collaboration, Between Worlds, Tansy Davies and Nick Drake join forces for Cave, a thrilling piece of music theatre exploring universal themes from personal loss to climate change. Conducted by Geoffrey Paterson in June 2018 at Printworks London, a former factory in East London, the ensemble is joined by extraordinary artists Mark Padmore and Elaine Mitchener.

RICHARD AYRES: THE GARDEN

Richard Ayres’s 50th anniversary tribute to the London Sinfonietta, No. 50 (The Garden) is a semistaged work of sardonic wit, at once fantastical and topical, accompanied by animations from Martha Colburn. Examining our impact on the environment and drawing upon influences including Dante’s Divine Comedy, Ayres tells the story of a man searching for meaning, digging down to hell before riding all the way to heaven.

A TRIBUTE: SIR HARRISON BIRTWISTLE

The London Sinfonietta performs some of the composer’s most significant works, all of which were recorded by the ensemble in concert in 2012. The footage also includes conversation with Sir Harrison Birtwistle himself about his music and how it works, with broadcaster Tom Service.

SOUND ACROSS A CENTURY / 1 SHIFTS OF COLOUR

The story of the evolution of new sounds in music across the 20th and into the 21st centuries continues. Presenter Jonathan Cross joins conductor David Atherton to tell another story of music across the past 100 years, through music and video of the era, as composers evolved a new musical language following the end of musical romanticism. Sound Out is a hugely successful schools programme encompassing creative projects and culminating annually in a concert attended by students from across London and the South East of England. Groups of young people enter the fascinating world of new music and learn more about how to compose, putting this into practice by interacting with London Sinfonietta musicians who seek to encourage and inspire the next generation of creative artists. The London Sinfonietta is in an on-going partnership with the boroughs of Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest, with whom it aims to build a positive environment for creative music-making in the classroom and with instrumental groups.

Connect is the London Sinfonietta’s public participation programme, named after an ongoing European collaboration that commissions composers to write pieces for the public to perform alongside professional musicians. The London Sinfonietta is proud to be associated with CoMA’s bi-annual festival showcasing public involvement in new music across the UK and Europe.

The fourth edition of the composer development programme Writing the Future will be launched in the 2019/20 season, recruiting a diverse group of composers and giving them the chance to write for London Sinfonietta concerts. The research and development project Blue Touch Paper also enters a new phase, with composers asked to create engaging digital works of art for online audiences.

The London Sinfonietta Academy provides workshops, coaching and performance opportunities for young musicians. Its annual summer course is especially popular, encouraging young players from around the UK to hone their new music performance skills by working directly alongside London Sinfonietta professionals. The new London Sinfonietta Junior Academy offers workshop days and side-by-side performances for younger musicians, introducing concepts at the heart of new music to players who are keen to pursue further musical training.
