In 2018, the London Symphony Orchestra will celebrate the 15th birthday of LSO St Luke’s, marking the transformation of a derelict, de-consecrated church into the thriving venue, music education centre and community hub that it is today. From the very beginning, BBC Radio 3’s Lunchtime Concerts have been at the heart of the programme at LSO St Luke’s, filling the Jerwood Hall with the sounds of chamber music in all its many forms, from singers to string quartets, Chopin to Shostakovich. We’re thrilled that BBC Radio 3 and LSO St Luke’s will be partnering once again this season for a new series of Lunchtime Concerts, along with two early-evening rush-hour performances in September. Turn to page 4 for more information. In 2017/18, BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts will be moving to Fridays. Alongside LSO Discovery’s Free Friday Lunchtime Concerts and the Barbican’s ECHO Rising Stars recitals (see page 14), this means that you’ll be able to enjoy chamber music performances on most Fridays throughout the year. We hope that you’ll join us for more BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts this season, while also taking the opportunity to discover something new at LSO St Luke’s. If the symphonies are public statements of intent, Shostakovich’s chamber works speak to us in a more intimate, personal way. Expressions of passion, pain and defiance, they’re sometimes furious and wild, sometimes biting with irony, sometimes stark and muted. Hear them in this series complemented by composers from across the centuries.
SHOSTAKOVICH WITH THE LSO See both sides of Shostakovich, as Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda conducts the Eighth (8 April) and Tenth (24 June) Symphonies. Visit lso.co.uk/shostakovich for full details 6 BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts 2017/18
