Grand Choral Works Choral music is at the very heart of the LSO’s 2016/17 season, as we explore works from the length and breadth of the choral repertoire. Verdi’s monumental Requiem launches the season in dramatic style under the commanding baton of Gianandrea Noseda, newly appointed LSO Principal Guest Conductor. The Requiem is one of the composer’s most iconic works, setting traditional liturgical texts to music of unprecedented emotional scope. You can experience it from a different angle at our Choral Singing Day too, as Choral Director Simon Halsey guides you through the work’s intricacies and complexities. In October Sir John Eliot Gardiner completes his Mendelssohn cycle with the composer’s rarely performed Second Symphony, the choral ‘Lobgesang’ (Hymn of Praise). ‘Lobgesang’ is a symphony-cantata of truly grand proportions

American Pioneers
REICH & ADAMS Sun 6 Nov, Barbican & LSO St Luke’s LSO DISCOVERY DAY: STEVE REICH Sun 6 Nov Steve Reich Daniel Variations You Are (Variations) The Desert Music Kristjan Järvi conductor
A new sound was born in America in the middle of the last century, with pulsating rhythms and a re-invigorated harmonic language. It was the sound of the new world – fresh, vibrant, exciting – and it changed music forever. Among this generation of composers were Steve Reich and John Adams. Both classically-trained, they were able to see beyond the

so visceral and rewarding to listen to. We celebrate these composers’
pathways into rich fields of expression. The history books may call this ‘Minimalism’, but there is nothing minimal about music that is far-reaching and enduring influence this autumn. In Steve Reich’s 80th birthday year we present a programme devoted to his orchestral works: the aphoristic You Are (Variations), the touching eulogy

of the Daniel Variations and the wild expanses of The Desert Music, as well as a chance to hear from the composer himself at an LSO Discovery Day. John Adams also joins us to conduct two concerts: his Christmas oratorio for the new millennium, El Niño, and a mix of works with myths and stories at their core, leading towards the composer’s own dramatic symphony for violin and orchestra, Scheherazade.2.

BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS
Whether he’s on the conductor’s podium or standing in front of the Orchestra, drawing sounds of lyricism and drama from his 250-year-old violin, Nikolaj Znaider is a familiar face to the LSO. A regular guest artist since his debut in 2001, the Danish musician brings together both sides of his career – conductor and soloist – with the LSO this year. He launches a multi-season exploration of Mozart and Tchaikovsky in December, play-directing the former’s violin concertos and conducting the latter’s symphonies. For Znaider, the composers were kindred spirits. ‘There’s something that unites their music,’ he says. ‘There’s a lightness of motion and a feeling of drama, of a story unfolding.’ Adding a further dimension to the series is a set of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts at LSO St Luke’s, which explores Tchaikovsky’s obsession with Mozart through chamber music by both. There’s a focus on stars of the violin elsewhere in the autumn, too. Znaider takes on a more traditional solo role for the brooding strains of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in September, Alina Ibragimova plays Mendelssohn, the LSO’s own Roman Simovic steps into the spotlight for Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1, and we welcome Leila Josefowicz and James Ehnes in December to round off 2016.
