‘This is music, this is what we believe. Music is for everybody, music is a right. It’s the air we breathe, the water we drink.’
Sir Simon Rattle om cbe
From the LSO’s Music Director The London Symphony Orchestra has an extraordinary 113-year history, and whilst it builds on its great heritage and history, at its core is an Orchestra that is always looking forwards. It’s an Orchestra that simply will not accept that there is a ceiling to what it can do, or that there is a limit to the level of excellence it can achieve, or the amount to which the Orchestra can become bonded with its community. The musicians of the LSO made it clear from the start that they wanted to explore more together. They want to play ‘earlier’ music as well as music written yesterday; they want to work across the arts; they want to tackle the incredible masterpieces that were written after World War II, and they want to build on their wish to bring music to everybody. It makes this the most exciting job in classical music today and I feel completely privileged to be with the LSO. The concert year ahead offers just a glimmer of things to come, both on and off the concert platform, and nowhere more so than in the opening two weeks of the 2017/18 season. Alongside the concerts I’ll conduct in the Barbican Hall with the Orchestra, there will be an opportunity to watch the LSO live from the Barbican Sculpture Court and listen

The concerts performed by the LSO this year will explore new avenues, looking back to some of the towering figures of the last century, and looking forward with some of the leading British composers working today. Alongside the wonderful family of artists and conductors that the Orchestra holds dear, we all hope that we can strive towards an excellence for everyone to enjoy and build on for years to come. I hope you will join us throughout the 2017/18 season, and that through the LSO’s music, you might be inspired to make some of your own.

6  London Symphony Orchestra
The London Symphony Orchestra aims to bring the greatest music to the greatest number of people – this is at the heart of everything we do. The LSO’s commitment to serve music and the people who love music remains as strong today as it was in 1904, when the Orchestra was formed by a group of London’s finest musicians. We are a self-governing musical collective built on artistic ownership and partnership, which allows us to maintain our professional ambitions and keep music-making at the forefront of everything we do. The LSO is said to have a signature sound emanating from the combined virtuosity of its 95 brilliant musicians, who come from all over the world. RESIDENT AT THE BARBICAN, TOURING AROUND THE GLOBE The LSO has been the Resident Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in the City of London since it opened in 1982. Giving 70 symphonic concerts there every year, and a further 70 on tour around the world, the LSO also annually programmes 25 concerts at LSO St Luke’s (the Orchestra’s own venue), and 950 workshops and 150 concerts through its community and education programme, LSO Discovery. We are a champion of new music andregularly commission some of the foremost British composers to write significant new works for the full orchestra as well as mixed-ability ensembles.
OUR NEW FAMILY OF ARTISTS & OUR MEMBERS The LSO has developed a close family of artists including Sir Simon Rattle as Music Director, Daniel Harding and Gianandrea Noseda as Principal Guest Conductors, Michael Tilson Thomas as Conductor Laureate, and André Previn as Conductor Emeritus. We also have long-standing relationships with some of the world’s greatest guest conductors and soloists. Many LSO Members enjoy flourishing solo and chamber music careers and teach at conservatoires in London and abroad, sharing their extensive knowledge with the musicians of the future.

OUR CO-OPERATIVE SPIRIT
EDUCATION & COMMUNITY
Many millions have enjoyed the LSO as a leading orchestra for film, having performed on (and been specifically chosen for) hundreds of classic scores including Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones. LSO Discovery brings the work of the LSO to all parts of society, and every year we give a free outdoor concert in London’s Trafalgar Square. These activities reflect our co-operative spirit and ongoing commitment to making music as accessible as possible to the greatest number of people.
LSO Discovery was founded in 1990 and remains a pioneering programme for music education in the UK. Since 2003 much of its activity has been based at LSO St Luke’s, following extensive restoration to the once-abandoned church. The building now acts as home to a wide range of education and music engagement projects, and as a venue for concerts designed for the local community, encouraging many to take their first steps towards enjoying classical music. And because much of LSO Discovery’s work is captured and shared digitally, enthusiasts, pupils and teachers from around the world can benefit from these activities wherever their physical location. Committed to nurturing the next generation of musical talent, LSO Discovery also provides extensive support and training for emerging young instrumentalists, composers and conductors. A 21st CENTURY ENTREPRENEUR The LSO has a proud history of innovation that helps to keep it relevant and contemporary. With the formation of our own recording label LSO Live in 1999, we brought about a revolution in how live orchestral music was recorded. LSO Live embraces new digital technologies, taking advantage of digital platforms such as iTunes and Google Play right through to virtual reality streaming on Melody VR. Our own platform, LSO Play, also allows people to observe the Orchestra from many different angles and experience every gesture and emotion on the musicians’ faces as they perform.

A GREAT MUSICAL FUTURE We are determined to ensure the future of great music in London and throughout the world, and are proud to be part of a cultural hub in the City of London alongside the Barbican Centre, the Museum of London and the Guildhall School. Our Barbican Residency is funded by the City of London Corporation and the LSO is a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England. The Orchestra enjoys major artistic residencies throughout the world – in New York, Paris and Tokyo – plus growing relationships elsewhere in Asia, principally China and South Korea, where our expertise in education work is key. The Orchestra relies on all of these strategic partnerships, plus our generous funders, the enlightened support of our donors, sponsors, and trust and foundation supporters, to enable us to continue delivering a uniquely dynamic range of work.

16  This is Rattle
This is Rattle Sir Simon Rattle’s arrival in London heralds a new era for the LSO. To mark his inaugural season as Music Director of the Orchestra, and as Artist-in-Association with the Barbican and Guildhall School, we bring you ten days of celebratory events for everyone to be a part of. This is a chance to step inside Sir Simon’s vision of classical music. British composers take centre-stage in the opening concert: there are works by four composers of today (who also curate their own evenings of music, presented by the Barbican), including a new fanfare by Helen Grime. Experience it live in the concert hall, or outdoors with a live relay to the Barbican Sculpture Court. Film and documentary screenings in the Barbican cinemas promise to deliver unique insights and new perspectives on Sir Simon’s career, while BBC Radio 3, who will be in residence, bring us chamber music performed by some of the artists Sir Simon has championed and a foyer programme of ‘how to make radio’ with BBC experts. And, true to Sir Simon’s own belief that music should be for everybody, there will be plenty of opportunities to join in, with a creative ‘Opera in a Day’ experience at LSO St Luke’s, and performances by musicians of all ages, including the young people of LSO On Track.

A Centenary Celebration Leonard Bernstein was a thinker, teacher, author, television star, provocateur, humanitarian – and he was my hero. writes Marin Alsop Seeing Bernstein conduct a New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concert when I was nine years old convinced me that conducting was the only thing in the world that I wanted to do. That alone would have been enough of a gift – but then, when I was 31, he took me under his wing and imparted to me the heart and soul of the craft. His total engagement with the music, the orchestra and the audience was beyond thrilling. I fell in love with him on the spot and adored his rebellious embracing of every genre of music. Bernstein’s relationship with the LSO was deep and enduring, and he became President of the Orchestra in 1987. It was through Bernstein that I first met the LSO at the Pacific Music Festival in Japan in 1990, while he was already suffering from the lung disease that would lead to his death three months later. In his opening remarks, he said that he had decided to devote what time he had left to education, because mentoring young people was the most rewarding way to spend his remaining days. Those of us there on that day understood the profound gift Bernstein was giving to each of us. But my gift from Bernstein started that day so long ago, when I was just nine years old and first dreamed of becoming a conductor. Read Marin Alsop’s full article at alwaysmoving.lso.co.uk

20  Debussy Anniversary
Debussy Anniversary My relationship with Debussy began as a flautist. writes François-Xavier Roth Debussy wrote so many wonderful parts for the flute, and I had a lot of time to discover his music in-depth. With 2018 being a hundred years since his death, I wanted to find a way to celebrate this major figure of music history through three different programmes that guide us through his music, from his influences through to those whom he influenced. I started with Debussy’s roots, and so the first programme features music by three composers who influenced his work – Wagner, Lalo and Massenet – and by Debussy himself we have an exciting discovery: the UK premiere of the ‘Première’ Suite, which was only recently unearthed in a library in New York. The second programme is pure Debussy. Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune is the masterwork. Many people say that it’s the start of modern music, and it’s so important in terms of its language, its harmony, its structure – everything. It’s a great thing to have the Prélude and Jeux performed together in the same programme – the Prélude is Debussy as a young man, opening a new door in music, and I think Jeux opens the next. The third programme was conceived with music by those whom I consider to be Debussy’s ‘sons’, the next generation in line – Boulez, Bartók and Stravinsky. It’s fantastic to be celebrating this most important of French composers with three of my compatriots as soloists and with the LSO. The LSO has the flexibility you need for Debussy, to achieve the subtle colours the music requires. Read François-Xavier Roth’s full article at alwaysmoving.lso.co.uk

New Music Britain Over the past decade and more, the LSO has worked with nearly 200 young and early-career composers, over 40 of whom have had pieces played by the full orchestra in the main season. writes Colin Matthews, Panufnik Composers Scheme Composition Director
NEW MUSIC BRITAIN
The LSO has committed to this because it believes that new music is part of the lifeblood of the repertoire. At the annual Panufnik Composers Scheme Workshop (now in the Scheme’s 13th year), there’s an atmosphere of enthusiasm and encouragement: a wish for the composer to get it right, and a recognition that unless they have the chance to work directly with an orchestra they are never fully going to be masters of their craft.

It seems to me that the sense of excitement that is part of these workshops is gradually transferring to the LSO’s concert audience. Sir Simon Rattle’s association with the LSO can only reinforce that feeling; he already has plans to include a new major work by a British composer each season, and I’m delighted that the first of these will be by Helen Grime (generously commissioned by the Barbican for Sir Simon and the LSO) who participated in these schemes over ten years ago.

24  Choral Masterworks
Choral Masterworks Beethoven’s most challenging piece remains the Missa Solemnis. It can loom like a forbidding monolith over performer and audience alike. writes Michael Tilson Thomas, LSO Conductor Laureate That said, Beethoven considered the Missa Solemnis as one of his supreme creations – his spiritual guidebook on which he worked for more than four years.
CHORAL HIGHLIGHTS
His first intention was to write a spectacle of music rivalling, even surpassing, the great choral pieces of Handel and Haydn. Missa Solemnis follows the order of the Mass and pursues many other objectives. It illuminates and meditates on the text by repeating and reconfiguring it many times. Each repetition expresses a new aspect of Beethoven’s understanding of the words.
Berlioz The Damnation of Faust with Sir Simon Rattle 17 & 19 September
For me, the piece suggests a visit to a cathedral. As in a cathedral, different chapels are dedicated to different spiritual territories. Some are majestic, some intimate, some symphonic or even operatic. Above all, it offered Beethoven the opportunity to explore and reflect on the nature of time itself, on the contrast between the fleeting time of human life and the vastness of divine time.
A Choral Christmas with Simon Halsey 3 December
So why, with all these amazing things happening, can the piece seem impenetrable? Like many ambitious works written for large forces it can become entangled in its own complexity and majesty. With so many people doing so many things at the same time, it can be difficult to follow the music’s many strands. My mission for this performance is to create more space around the music, allowing us to better follow the streams of Beethoven’s thought.

Dmitri Shostakovich This is my first complete cycle of Shostakovich’s 15 symphonies, and it has come at the perfect time in my career. writes Gianandrea Noseda, LSO Principal Guest Conductor I have conducted most of Shostakovich’s symphonies individually, but never together in a cycle and never for a recording – all of these will be released by LSO Live. I have taken advantage of my time living in St Petersburg – not as a tourist, but living with the Russian people with everyday activities helping me to understand life there – and it’s only now that I’m not there that I can take a step back and see this music through that perspective.
DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH
It’s important to know the atmosphere and the political situation around each of these works. For example, Shostakovich poured everything into the Fourth Symphony and was convinced he had created something revolutionary, expecting it to be praised. But of course the opposite happened – it was banned by the authorities. His reaction to this was the ‘joyful’ Fifth Symphony, which is really anything but. He put a lot of lipstick on it to make it seem acceptable to the Soviet authorities. The situation in which Shostakovich and his fellow artists, actors, musicians and architects found themselves is so relevant to today, and the story behind these symphonies needs to be understood.
BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS: SHOSTAKOVICH PLUS
I’m really looking forward to spending more time with the LSO. Each musician cares about what they are doing, they commit themselves fully and are completely engaged. Shostakovich particularly demands this and it’s an incredible skill to have. The LSO musicians understand how their individual talents should be shared – everyone shines even more as a result. And as a conductor your role is often to motivate the artists, to ask them to give you more, but with the LSO – they are asking me to give, to never stop giving. It’s so fruitful and rewarding to work in this way.

Arts Council England works to get great art to everyone by championing, developing and investing in artistic experiences that enrich people’s lives. It supports a range of artistic activities from theatre to music, literature to dance, photography to digital art, and carnival to crafts. Great art inspires us, brings us together and teaches us about ourselves and the world around us. In short, it makes life better.
The London Symphony Orchestra is proud to be one of five core partners including the City of London Corporation who are working together to transform the area from Farringdon to Moorgate in the north west ‘Square Mile’. With the arrival of Crossrail in 2018, 1.5 million additional visitors are expected in the area and together we aim to create an unrivalled place for the arts, heritage, learning and entertainment.
The London Symphony Orchestra is the permanent Resident Orchestra at the Barbican. The LSO presents around 70 concerts every year as part of the Barbican’s wider artistic offer, presenting some of the best music in the world as part of an international, cross-arts programme. Both organisations share the ambition of making the arts accessible to all and attract audiences from across the globe.
BMW and Reignwood stand shoulder to shoulder with the LSO, enabling the Orchestra to go further with its ambitions. Their leadership support sets a new
standard and makes an important statement about their commitment to excellence in music, education, access and cultural exchange.
