welcome violinist Janine Jansen as the focus of this year’s LSO Artist Portrait. 2
WELCOME / LE GRAND MACABRE ~ LSO.CO.UK
Le grand Death, an astrologer, a fat prince and a human mule walk into an opera and drink themselves into oblivion. Literally. From the wildest musical mind of last century comes an opera about a possible apocalypse. The cutting edge, the critical, the debauched, the debased and the degenerate all mingle together in a spectacular expulsion of sound – you’ve never heard anything like it. It’s a farce. It’s a tragedy. It’s one or the other (and both).
LE GRAND MACABRE Sat 14 & Sun 15 Jan Ligeti Le grand macabre (semi-staged performance) Sir Simon Rattle conductor Peter Sellars director Peter Hoare Piet the Pot Ronnita Miller Amando Elizabeth Watts Amanda Pavlo Hunka Nekrotzar Frode Olsen Astradamors Heidi Melton Mescalina Audrey Luna Venus, Gepopo Anthony Roth Costanzo Prince Gogo Peter Tantsits White Minister Joshua Bloom Black Minister London Symphony Chorus Simon Halsey chorus director
It is Le grand macabre. Coming to London for two nights only, Ligeti’s masterpiece of avant-garde opera is treated to an irreverent new semi-staging from the visionary creative partnership that brought you Pelléas et Mélisande in 2016. If you can’t make it, well, it won’t be the end of the world. Or will it?
Produced by the LSO and the Barbican. Part of LSO 2016/17 Season and Barbican Presents. Multi-buy and Group discounts do not apply to these concerts.
There’s only one way to be sure …
‘This piece is such a pleasure, a palette-cleanser. There’s not one thing that’s familiar and that’s the joy, the liberation, the exhilaration of it.’ Peter Sellars

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH WIGMORE HALL Janine Jansen’s LSO concerts are interspersed with a series of recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall. Wed 8 Feb, Wigmore Hall Music by Berg, Schoenberg & Korngold Fri 2 Jun, Wigmore Hall Music by Schubert & Messiaen wigmore-hall.org.uk
‘There’s nothing like a live concert,’ according to violinist Janine Jansen, whose risk-taking performances, full of feeling, energy and intensity, take listeners on journeys through the music. ‘When those moments happen – if you feel that everybody in the hall is there in the same moment, with the same attention, that is magic,’ she says. ‘That’s what one plays music for.’ You can see this commitment to communication and connection yourself this spring, as Jansen joins us for her LSO Artist Portrait series. She takes on three very different interpretations of the violin concerto – the shifting characters of Bernstein’s Serenade, Berg’s modernist masterpiece, and Brahms’ soaring blend of drama, lyricism and spirited folk-dance rhythms. ‘It stays a challenge,’ Jansen says of the Brahms. ‘I’ve been playing it for 20 years – maybe that feels like a long time, but on the other hand, it’s actually nothing in a whole lifetime, and it’s a piece that needs to be with you for many, many years’.

JANINE JANSEN / AFTER ROMANTICISM ~ LSO.CO.UK
Looking back to the end of the Romantic era, conductor François-Xavier Roth explores an all-important question: what happened next? In the second part of this multi-season series, we focus on two composers to discover how their music met the challenge of the modern age. From Debussy, we hear two works written 20 years apart that each display the composer’s talents at different points in his career. Hear the evolution from the evocative opening of Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune to the bristling rhythms of Jeux and discover his sensuous sound-world as it developed. The two pieces from Bartók tell a different story, and you’ll hear the fruits of a lifetime spent synthesising the traditional folk forms of his native Hungary with the fierce demands of the musical avant-garde in his two final works: the Third Piano Concerto and the Viola Concerto.
