Welcome to LSO St Luke’s

lso.co.uk  020 7638 8891  5

A music venue for everyone to enjoy in the heart of London. Fourteen years ago, the London Symphony Orchestra, Resident Orchestra up the road at the Barbican Centre, decided to transform what was the shell of a de-consecrated church into a unique music venue for everyone to enjoy, together with one of its corporate partners, UBS.

As a Grade I listed building with a stunning contemporary interior, LSO St Luke’s regularly hosts award ceremonies, daytime conferences, gala dinners and more.

Created principally as a space for the Orchestra’s education and community projects, as well as for the LSO itself to rehearse in, the venue also hosts hundreds of events each year, exploring genres as far-reaching as world music, folk and jazz alongside classical.

We’re not just a beautiful concert hall. We also have a welcoming café and bar situated in the crypt, a digital technology studio, a specially designed Gamelan room and meeting spaces.

The home of LSO Discovery

6  Russian Revolutionaries

In their music, the legendary Russian composers seem to capture all at once the spirit of their country’s history, landscapes and folk traditions, but also the times of upheaval that were the backdrop to many of their lives.

You can explore two other dimensions of Shostakovich’s career elsewhere in the spring. On 21 January, Melos Sinfonia pairs the Soviet symphonist’s first foray into the genre with his student Galina Ustvolskaya’s Second Symphony. Written for an unusual combination of instruments – plus solo voice – Ustvolskaya’s work is a powerful, visceral accompaniment to Shostakovich’s sardonic wit.

There can’t have been many years more turbulent than 1917. A century ago, Russia was shaken by not one but two revolutions, and life, culture and society changed forever. Four pianists join us in February to explore the impact that this dramatic year had on music through a series of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts. With solo piano works from both before and after 1917, we’ll hear from composers like Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Medtner, who fled the country they called home, and Shostakovich, who remained buried in the Soviet regime throughout his career.

Meanwhile, March brings the chance to hear soloist Sasha Grynyuk bring to life Shostakovich’s once-lost piano score for The New Babylon in the world premiere live performance. The music accompanies a screening of the 1929 masterpiece of Soviet cinema, which tells another revolutionary story, this time of the radical Paris Commune of 1871.

8  Hidden Beauty

Hidden Beauty A rare opportunity to experience the 650-year-old art of noh and the genius of internationally renowned professional noh artist, Akira Matsui, and seven performers as part of a bold collaboration with western theatre, opera, ballet, music and poetry. A central aspect of Japan’s 650-year-old style of theatre – noh – is to reveal a hidden form of beauty called yuˉ gen that occurs when all the elements of the performance are in harmony with one another and create a perfect balance of forms. Spectators learn to attune themselves to the beauty of the key elements of noh through the poetic text, the music, the movement and the delicacy of the masks – and how they appear in space and time. So noh is at its best when it is a total theatre of experience: immersive by intention, multi-disciplinary by design. Which is why we are delighted to welcome a master of the artform, Akira Matsui, for a collaboration between practitioners of noh and western-trained performers in a programme called Noh time like the present … (24 & 25 Feb). The programme is made of four pieces. The first is devoted to Samuel Beckett’s ‘Rockaby’, a poetic but bleak depiction of a person trapped in the inertia of a life reduced to nothing more than the to-ing and fro-ing of a gently rocking chair in the dark. The second piece

treats us to the music of the classical instruments of noh: the dynamic resonances of kotsuzumi (shoulder drum) and the otsuzumi (hip drum) and their players’ distinctive drums calls, working in harmony with the nohkan flute, with its delicate, and at times, intense melodies. In the third part, the vocal qualities of noh are brought into focus, combining three classical noh extracts with three movements from Bach’s Cello Suite No 1. After the interval, the fourth and final piece presents something new. Articulating the principles he has learned from decades immersed in noh performance, Richard Emmert has devised an original score to a new text by Jannette Cheong. The piece is called Opposites-InVerse, where philosophy, science and the art of noh articulate three stages in a life. Unique to their approach will be the way that they combine noh movement with contemporary ballet, and noh music with operatic vocals, to breathe fresh new life into the spirit of this ancient art. That same confrontation between the past and the present emerges earlier in the month in the Soundhub Showcase (11 Feb). Three composers from the LSO Soundhub Scheme take three lines of enquiry – the sonic possibilities of the bassoon (Lee Westwood), how to express love through sub-vocalisations (Oliver Leith), rendering architecture as sound (Cevanne HorrocksHopayian) – and transform them into works that are at once classical and contemporary and the latest instalments in the tradition of our living music.

10  BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS

BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS A four-concert residency from the Nash Ensemble – their third residency at LSO St Luke’s – focuses on the lyrical, tuneful gifts of Bruch and his one-time student Vaughan Williams. In 1897 the young Englishman Ralph Vaughan Williams spent an enjoyable few months in Berlin studying with the renowned German composer Max Bruch. ‘Bruch encouraged me,’ Vaughan Williams recalled, ‘and I had never had much encouragement before.’ Bruch’s testimonial for Vaughan Williams calls him ‘a very good musician and a talented composer’; Vaughan Williams also remembered Bruch appreciating his ‘ve-ry o-riginaal ideeas’ – though not his harmonies, which were ‘rather too original’! Hearing their music together today, the delightful surprise is discovering how much they had in common.

12  Our Neighbours

Our Neighbours Keren Wiltshire, Director of Services at St Luke’s Community Centre, talks about the long-standing relationship between the Community Centre and LSO St Luke’s music education centre. St Luke’s Community Centre began in the early 1980s to help tackle the increase in social isolation and improve health and wellbeing amongst older people. It was originally set up as a fun, informal operation which became popular very quickly. As they grew older the needs of our members changed, as did the services we offered, which evolved to include things like day-care, transport and mobility needs. New families also began moving into the neighbourhood so alongside our work in supporting older people, we wanted to encourage families and younger people to use the Centre too. As a result, we added a whole range of different services, including our award-winning cookery school, dance classes, after-school clubs and an employment and enterprise hub where corporate volunteers donate their time to give one-to-one job support to individuals. We also added a new café which has been instrumental in bringing new people into the Centre who would not normally have come in. The arts are an intrinsic part of what the Community Centre delivers. In addition to our various art classes, we also have four studios from where different community artists work

and donate their time. They organise tours to galleries and run various clubs and projects. We deliberately went down this route in an effort to encourage residents to take advantage of the wonderful art offerings on their doorstep – which includes LSO St Luke’s. We’ve always had a connection with LSO St Luke’s and over the years have been involved in a whole range of activities together, from having a string quartet perform at one of our lunches to supporting us at the Whitecross Street Party by bringing LSO and Discovery groups. That was amazing! I think my best memory, however, was when some of the LSO players came in to our over 55s club room to perform. They got everybody up singing and dancing; it was just magical! The Choir have always come along and supported us too. I remember when the Community Choir first started; some of our older pensioners felt incredibly proud to have been invited to join. It was a huge thing for them and was lovely to see. More recently, we shared in the ‘Old Street New Beginnings’ event at LSO St Luke’s. It was absolutely wonderful and very motivating to get so many people along and singing. I was very impressed with all the different types of people who joined in – it was very diverse. I’m very happy to say that there has always been that synergy between us and continues to be so.

14  The Romantic Heart of Europe

The Romantic Heart of Europe LSO Discovery Free Friday Lunchtime Concerts feature the warm Romantic sounds of 19th-century music from Vienna, Prague and Germany. From Mendelssohn to Mahler, beautiful melodies and sonorous voices will fill the Jerwood Hall. Our Free Friday Lunchtime concerts include Guildhall School singers in a portrait of Mendelssohn in words and music, and songs by Austrian late Romantics Mahler and Wolf. LSO musicians perform Dvorˇák’s String Quintet No 2, written for string quartet with double bass for extra resonance. LSO Principal Daniel Jemison completes the series with his own choice of works for the bassoon. Brahms lived much of his life in Vienna; he admired Dvorˇák’s music but didn’t like Wolf or his songs. His German Requiem, written after the death of his mother, is a setting of German words from the Lutheran bible, and the work brings peace to the living, beginning ‘blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted’.

AT THE BARBICAN ... Fabio Luisi conducts Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms with the LSO and London Symphony Chorus at the Barbican Hall on 16 & 19 March.

Spend Sunday 5 March at LSO St Luke’s with LSO Choral Director Simon Halsey and members of the London Symphony Chorus, gaining insights into the German Requiem and an opportunity to sing this uplifting music. A Discovery Day on Sunday 19 March starts with the LSO’s morning rehearsal in the Barbican Hall, as the Principal Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Fabio Luisi, prepares Brahms’ German Requiem and Schubert’s Symphony No 8 (the ‘Unfinished’) – written in Vienna and sometimes called the first Romantic symphony. An afternoon at LSO St Luke’s explores the music of Schubert and Brahms. Based in Vienna at the same time as Brahms, though very different in musical style, Anton Bruckner wrote many popular choral works. The series ends with a Singing Day, Simon Halsey directing Bruckner favourites on Sunday 9 April.
