Welcome
Welcome BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts have been a weekly staple in the events calendar at LSO St Luke’s since doors opened at the Centre nearly ten years ago, and building on from last year’s truly ambitious series, here is yet another compelling season of concerts featuring some of the world’s most exciting artists. The focal point of the year falls on the tenth anniversary of LSO St Luke’s in March 2013, which will feature a BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert residency, broadcasting live from this intimate venue on consecutive weekdays.
Described as an ‘outstanding artist’ by the Daily Telegraph, pianist Imogen Cooper kicks off the BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert season with Imogen Cooper and Friends. She will be joined by her musical associates cellist Adrian Brendel and violinist Henning Kraggerud, as well as performing two solo recitals.
Interweaving Imogen’s autumn series is Schumann Song Cycles which includes an impressive roll-call of singers, some of whom are long-standing friends of the LSO. Schumann Song Cycles Intimate poetry, intimate music, intimate setting. Roderick Williams baritone I’ve chosen a programme which gives me a chance to revisit the Kernerlieder, a cycle I worked intensively on a couple of years ago. It’s less sung than the others, perhaps because of the demands it makes on the performers! I’m very much looking forward to revisiting the work and searching for something new to bring to it.

Mark-Anthony Turnage composer People have an idea of classical music as pure and untouchable, but if you get closer to it you realise composers have always begged, borrowed and stolen from elsewhere. I’ve always been open to influences, even from rock and pop music, which is a bit of a can of worms for some people. But as an artist, if you can’t open a can of worms, what can you do?
