ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INC. ~ Sigma Eta Zeta chapter ~
FIFTEENTH ANNUAL
CELEBRATION ~ A Cultural and Sorority Heritage Program ~ ••••• SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2016 | THE REEF • LONG BEACH, CA
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 16, 1920, at Howard University, Washington, D.C. The Klan was very active during this period and the Harlem Renaissance was acknowledged as the first important movement of Black artists and writers in the U.S. This same year the Volstead Act became effective heralding the start of Prohibition and Tennessee delivered the crucial 36th ratification for the final adoption of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. The worst and longest economic recession to hit the U.S. would define the end of the decade-The Great Depression. It was within this environment that five coeds envisioned a sorority which would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond, raise consciousness of their people, encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members. These women believed that sorority elitism and socializing overshadowed the real mission for progressive organizations and failed to address fully the societal mores, ills, prejudices, and poverty affecting humanity in general and the black community in particular. Since its inception, Zeta has continued its steady climb into the national spotlight with programs designed to demonstrate concern for the human condition both nationally and internationally. The organization has been innovative in that it has chronicled a number of firsts. It was the first National Pan-Hellenic Council organization to centralize its operations in a national headquarters, first to charter a chapter in Africa, first to form auxiliary groups, and first to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The sorority takes pride in its continued participation in transforming communities through volunteer services from members and its auxiliaries. Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters worldwide and has a membership of 100,000+. Zeta‘s national and local programs include the endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliaries have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change. As the sorority moves toward its centennial, it retains its original zest for excellence. It espouses the highest academic ideals and that has resulted in its members serving in groundbreaking roles in all fields of endeavor. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is poised for perpetual service to mankind into her second century and beyond.

Sigma Eta Zeta chapter currently sponsors one collegiate chapter at CSU Long Beach (Delta Eta chapter); three youth affiliate groups: Pearlettes (ages 4-8), Amicettes (ages 9-13) and Archonettes (ages 14-18); and one adult auxiliary group: Zeta Amicae (Friends of Zeta). Sigma Eta Zeta chapter continues to provide its members, undergraduates, adult and youth auxiliaries with opportunities to gain valuable knowledge, experience and confidence to become responsible decision makers and leaders while continuing to be a positive force for change in our communities and within the organization. Our chapter’s focus is to “Edify, Educate and Empower the WHOLE Woman”. We believe that by doing so, we are strengthened mentally, spiritually, financially, emotionally and socially. Thus, we as women are able to project a greater awareness of self; a sharper image of influence and success; and an unconquerable spirit of sisterhood. Motto: “This is a WORKING chapter!”
R.O.O.T.S. ~ The “R.O.O.T.S. Celebration” is a cultural and sorority heritage program designed to spotlight the efforts, achievements and success of women in our community and in our sorority. On this day we renew our commitment to our families, our communities, our sisterhood, and ourselves. This distinguished event is held annually, during the last weekend in February, capturing the essence of Black History month while ushering in the spirit of Women’s History month (March). The program features an afternoon of entertainment, lunch, raffles, award presentations, and honoring of special guests. A Celebration Journal is compiled (ads, sponsors, congratulatory notes) highlighting this auspicious and honorable occasion.

THE BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring Ring with the harmonies of liberty Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies Let it resound loud as the rolling sea Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light Keep us forever in the path, we pray Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand True to our God, true to our native land.
