ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONS Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations. Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.: Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. These five women, called “Our Five Pearls, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Community Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. Since its inception, the Sorority has chronicled a number of firsts. Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form adult and youth auxiliary groups; to centralize its operations in a national headquarters; and to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

 Sigma Eta Zeta chapter was chartered in Long Beach, California on April 12, 2001 and is home to a diverse group of professional, college educated, and executive women dedicated to promoting the ideals of Scholarship, Sisterly Love, Finer Womanhood, and Community Service while working to improve the lives of men, women, children, and seniors through ZHOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel). Sigma Eta Zeta chapter sponsors one collegiate chapter at CSU Long Beach (Delta Eta chapter); three youth affiliate groups: Pearlettes (ages 4-8), Amicettes (ages 9-13) and Archonettes (ages 14-18) and two adult auxiliary groups: Zeta Amicae (Friends of Zeta) and Zeta Male Network. Sigma Eta Zeta chapter continues to provide its members, undergraduates, adult and youth auxiliaries with opportunities to gain valuable knowledge, experience and confidence to become responsible decision makers and leaders while continuing to be a positive force for change in our communities and within the organization.

Our chapter’s focus is to “Edify, Educate and Empower the WHOLE Woman”. We believe that by doing so, we are strengthened mentally, spiritually, financially, emotionally and socially. Thus, we as women are able to project a greater awareness of self; a sharper image of influence and success; and an unconquerable spirit of sisterhood.

Refining Women • Defining Value

From Girls To Pearls, is dedicated to helping girls discover their true value, role and contribution to society. Our unique programs help positively position our girls as they transition from self to service; from students to scholars, and from young ladies to refined women. We are committed to developing and refining the genuine qualities of virtue, confidence, integrity, and success in young ladies. Our mission is reinforced by our uncompromising commitment to educate and empower young ladies by utilizing a mentorship and networking component designed to equip them with tools for personal, academic and professional advancement.

THE PROGRAM

& Scholarship Program Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and From Girls To Pearls proudly embraces this opportunity to mentor young females as they enhance their personal, educational, cultural, spiritual, and social lives as African American young ladies. The Blue Encore Debutante Debut is an annual presentation to introduce a select group of young ladies into society by showcasing their charm, beauty, and grace. Debutantes must demonstrate an active interest and involvement in community activities, maintain a scholarly grade point average, and exemplify the highest ideals of finer womanhood. It is an exceptional opportunity for young ladies to experience an assortment of educational and social activities. Beginning in August and culminating in May, debutantes participate in workshops, service projects and bonding activities that positively reinforce critical self-esteem principles that will last a lifetime. They also learn the value of community service, fund raising, health and fitness, public speaking, and financial responsibility. Additionally, each Debutante has the opportunity to earn a scholarship award. The ten (10) month program is geared towards mentoring young women through their formative high school years and as they transition to their life beyond high school. Our program encourages high scholastic, moral and ethical standards and helps cultivate lasting relationships amongst the participating young women, parents, families and community. The Blue Encore Debutante Debut & Scholarship Program has drawn young ladies from diverse communities and various high schools throughout Los Angeles, Long Beach and Torrance Unified School Districts. Past years’ debutantes attended Bishop Montgomery HS, Frederick Douglass Academy, Middle College HS, New Millennium Secondary School, North HS, George Washington Preparatory HS, Hamilton HS, Vistamar HS, Lakewood HS, Lawndale HS, Long Beach Poly HS, Millikan HS, St. Bernard HS, University HS, and Millikan HS. The program’s mission is to provide scholarships and promote the ideals of Finer Womanhood, Scholarship, Sisterly Love, Service, Family, Education, Culture and Leadership.

It is an honor and a privilege to greet you this afternoon on behalf of Sigma Eta Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and welcome you to the 5th Annual Blue Encore Debutante Debut. Over 96 years ago, a vision came to life and a legacy was born at Howard University with five collegiate women who saw that Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood would not only be principles of an illustrious organization, but a guide to those women who proudly exhibit these elements as she serves her community and sorority. Within 40 years of its inception, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. saw the need to add the embellishment of young girls into the fabric of our sorority. With this in mind, you now see our youth auxiliaries interwoven into the very essence of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; it’s outreach and programming. Today we gather to celebrate the journey of growth from girls to young women . These four young ladies have undergone 10 months of development with scholarship and refinement as their compass. Chase, Clark, Erin and Monique are a clear reflection of what was envisioned years ago with the establishment of this program. They embody the poise, grace and scholastic acheivement that we can all be proud of. As we take the time to debut these young women to society, let us remember the importance of being a guiding light to the youth in our community. Without us, there will be no future law makers, doctors, engineers, educators, or leaders for tomorrow. It is important that we seek to be an inspiration for others because you never know what life you may touch. We hope that you will enjoy this auspicious and inspiring event and join us in our future endeavors as we work to improve the lives of seniors, men, women and youth.

I Love You,

My baby girl is growing how fast time fly I still remember her little hands waving bye-bye. As time moves on so will she Constantly growing it amazes me. A beautiful young lady you have turned out to be I’m very proud of what I see My baby girl is growing as I watch her from day to day, I thank you Lord for directing her the right way. ~ Gayle Hight “And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy….” ~Acts 2:17

When our Savior decided even before you took your first breath on the outside, the family knew how excellent you were going to grow up to be. A little one who didn’t take long to crawl or walk everyone would say “where’d she go that fast”? Then to stand on your own two feet; having your own mindset; going to school for your own education (to be continued…), developing your own mannerism and your own character. I am so proud of you for having: C ~ Class as a young lady L ~ Loyalty and dedication in whatever you take on A ~ Audacity to keep moving forward no matter the obstacles R ~ Radiance of beauty inside and out K ~ Kindness to all that you encounter just as the fruit of the spirit (Gal. 5:22) commands you to be and that you’re taught to be E ~ Excellence in upholding God’s standards, your morals and family values. Be blessed Clarke and congratulations!

Congratulations Monique! on all your accomplishments.

“THE HOUSE BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD” There are hermit souls that live withdrawn in the place of their self-content, There are souls like stars that dwell apart in a fellowless firmament. There are pioneer souls that blaze their paths where highways never ran, But let me live by the side of the road and be a friend to man. Let me live in a house by the side of the road where the race of men go by, The men who are good and the men who are bad, as good as bad as I. I would not sit in the scorner’s seat nor hurl the cynics band, Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man. I see from my house by the side of the road by the side of the highway of life, The men who press with the ardor of hope; the men who are faint with strife. But I turn not away from their smiles nor their tears both parts of an infinite plan, Let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man. I know there are brook-gladden meadow ahead and mountains of wearisome height, That the road passes on through the long afternoon and stretches away to the night. But still I rejoice when the travelers rejoice and weep with the strangers that moan, Nor live in my house by the side of the road like a man who dwells alone. Let me live in my house by the side of the road it’s here the race of men go by, They are good, they are bad, they are weak, they are strong, wise, foolish – so am I. Then why should I sit in the scorner’s seat or hurl the cynic’s band, Let me live in my house the side of the road and be a friend to man. By Sam Foss

Congratulations

Wisdom is like a life giving tree to those who hold on to her, she is a blessing to those who keep her close. With wisdom the Lord created the earth and sky. With knowledge, he made the oceans and the clouds that produce rain. My daughter, don’t ever let wisdom out of your sight. Hold on to wisdom and careful planning they will bring you a long life filled with honor. ~ Proverbs 3:18-22

I encourage You to go farther, not only dream big, but learn much and never to settle, for your future is limitless! Remember no one ever meets success without first meeting failure. “It’s Always Been There”

A Poem for Erin It’s always been there, right from the very start. It’s always been there my love; What’s that? That’s YOU…inside my heart. It’s always been there, when others would say “she’s so mean and so BAD!” I could ALWAYS see this deep specialness that you’ve ALWAYS had. It’s always been there, underneath your “paci”; that sweet smile was a secret we shared Couldn’t nobody make you just show it, they’d get a pinch if they dared. It’s always been there dear heart, You’re more than one single flower, but a bouquet waiting to bloom You’re mommas “Miracle”, her “Ride or Die”, her sunshine chasing away the gloom It’s always been there babygirl; opinionated, bossy and loud! But we all know that you will turn those into to strengths and make your family proud. It’s always been there; been there this whole time and just so you know, The seeds of your success, planted in fertile soil, have taken root long ago. It’s always been there Erin… That knowing that you’re growing and entering this world and it scares me to death; But I also know just what you’re made of and I’ll be loving you until my last breath.

Beverly Wright

You started your own foundation to help young women in need; you volunteer your time at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in the Labor and Delivery department; and the most important thing I am proud of how you take care of your mother. Erin, since you are changing into a responsible young lady, I want you to know that I am always here to listen, help, and support you as you continue to excel in life.

Auntie Wendy

Love “Mom”, Jazzy & Diamond

A daughter to a mother is like a diamond in the rough. A mother to a daughter sometimes makes life rough. She’ll always be my little girl, no matter what path she takes. You’ll often want to help her in decisions that she makes. But I sit back silently; I have to let her grow. Then suddenly she’s a woman and she wants me to let go. I still will hold on very gently so she can’t feel my grip; But in my heart I’ll be there just in case she slips. She wants to share her feelings but some things I don’t understand; Specially when she talks about boys; I just lift my hands. This diamond in a rough I will always call her mine; The trust and faith I have I know she will be just fine.

I love you Erin, “Baby” aka Mother

I am beyond proud of you and all of your accomplishments you have made. Over the course of our friendship I have seen you grow into a smart, beautiful, and confident person that I love and appreciate. I am happy to call you a true friend that I could call and count on to be there and to support me.

Love you beautiful, Starr

Erin, I pray all your dreams come true!  Oh, my Queen…You are simply gorgeous. A soul so serene, and eyes with the fire of torches. Your skin..You’re beautiful, beautiful shell. That mesmerizing melanin, that ages with time oh so well. "Say it loud 'I'm black and I'm proud'“

Never forget who you are; never be ashamed of the struggles we face. We glow just as bright as shiniest stars; and we do it with such grace. Come now, my dear. My precious angels in different shades of brown. Come now with hearts sincere; Come now and claim your crown.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size. But when I start to tell them, they think I’m telling lies. I say, it’s in the reach of my arms; the span of my hips; stride of my steps, the curl of my lips. I’m a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s Me!

We look at you and we don’t see the passage of time. We see a little girl walking at the age of 7 months, running around the house, playing dress up. We’ll try and respect the fact that you are older now and that the decision you will make are your own, but you must understand that to us, you will always be our little

Chase! We may not be able to carry you in our arms anymore, but we will always carry you in our hearts. Kudos to you and the wonderful accomplishments you’ve made thus far. You are positioning yourself for greatness and the sky is the limit. And remember:

• “Go as far as you can go, and take the Lord with you” ~ Bishop B.R. Benbow • “A winner never quits & a quitter never wins” • “Don’t compare yourself to others; compare yourself to YOU yesterday” • “Excuses are tools used by the weak and incompetent, those who use them will amount to nothing” • “Humility comes before honor” ~ Prov. 15:33
