Judaism / Theology—New Books
Amazing Chesed
Living a Grace-Filled Judaism By Rabbi Rami Shapiro
The question isn’t whether grace— God’s love freely given—is there for you in Judaism. The question is, do you have the courage to accept it? Ask almost any Jew whether grace is a central concept in Judaism and an essential element in living Jewishly, and, chances are, their answer will be “no.” But that’s the wrong answer. This fascinating foray into God’s love freely given offers the reader a way to answer that question in the affirmative. Drawing from ancient and contemporary, traditional and non-traditional Jewish wisdom, this book reclaims the idea of grace in Judaism in three ways: • It offers a view of God that helps the reader understand what grace is, why grace is, and how grace manifests in the world. • It sets forth a reading of Judaism that is grace-filled: an understanding of creation, Shabbat and other Jewish practices from a grace-filled perspective. • It challenges the reader to be embraced and transformed by grace, and to live life as a vehicle for God’s grace, thereby fulfilling the promise of being created in God’s image and likeness.

New Books—Judaism / Prayer We have Sinned: Confession in Judaism—Ashamnu and Al Chet Prayers of Awe Series Edited by Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman, PhD
A varied and fascinating look at sin, confession and pardon in Judaism.
Judaism / High Holy Days 6 x 9, 300 pp (est), Hardcover 978-1-58023-612-6 $24.99 Available August 2012 Editor’s Home Area: New York City Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman, PhD, a worldrenowned liturgist and professor of liturgy at Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion, is a prominent speaker on Judaism, prayer and synagogue development. He is author of over thirty books and editor of the award-winning series My People’s Prayer Book: Traditional Prayers, Modern Commentaries and the Prayers of Awe series (in which this is the third volume). He is co-editor of My People’s Passover Haggadah: Traditional Texts, Modern Commentaries and other books.
Few liturgical acts strike modern worshipers as more problematic than the public act of confession. Does anyone even believe in sin any more, let alone reward and punishment? At least, we think, the sins we confess should be our own, not a manufactured list of misdeeds arranged (of all things) according to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet rather than according to the likelihood of our actually having committed them. Yet confession in Judaism on the most sacred day of the Jewish year is precisely that. Not just one, in fact, but two public confessions—Ashamnu and Al Chet—are liturgical staples by now for anyone attending Yom Kippur services. These confessions are recited no fewer than ten times in the course of twenty-four hours at prayer. No one can miss them, and no one can avoid wondering about them. This third volume in the Prayers of Awe series, turns to a varied and fascinating look at sin, confession and pardon in Judaism, as suggested by the centrality of these two prayers that people know so well but understand so little. Through a series of lively introductions and commentaries, almost forty contributors—men and women, scholars, rabbis, theologians and poets, representing all Jewish denominations—examine the history of confession in Judaism, its roots in the Bible, its evolution in rabbinic and modern thought, and the very nature of confession for men and women today.
Praise for Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman’s Work “Will provide Jewish families and groups with a richer understanding of this major holiday, its observance and its meaning for their lives. Highly recommended.”

A Guide to Meaningful Jewish Prayer By Rabbi Zalman M. Schachter-Shalomi with Joel Segel Foreword by Rabbi Lawrence Kushner
A fresh approach to prayer for all who wish to appreciate the power of prayer’s poetry and song—and join the age-old conversation that Jews have had with God. Even Jews who pray regularly know how challenging prayer can be. Some are uneasy with the idea of God, of talking to God as an “Other,” of petitioning for their needs. Some have trouble with the Hebrew or remain unmoved by the prayer book’s kingly metaphors. Others are impatient with the shortcomings we perceive in our synagogues. They don’t understand why prayer is relevant to their lives. They want access to prayer they can truly mean rather than just recite. This fresh look at prayer practice offers a way around these problems through Hassidic spirituality and kabbalah. This is not prayer of obligation but prayer of invitation. Reb Zalman emphasizes the opportunities that prayer offers: opportunities for song and silence; for connection and remembrance; to un- Judaism / Prayer burden and to trust. New Books—Judaism / Prayer / Men’s Interest Jewish Men Pray
Words of Yearning, Praise, Petition, Gratitude and Wonder from Traditional and Contemporary Sources Edited by Stuart M. Matlins
A celebration of Jewish men’s voices in prayer—to strengthen, to heal, to comfort, to inspire.
Judaism / Prayer 5 x 7¼, 200 pp (est), Hardcover 978-1-58023-628-7 $19.99 Available October 2012 Editor’s Home Area: New England
This collection of prayers celebrates the variety of ways Jewish men engage in personal dialogue with God—with words of praise, petition, joy, gratitude, wonder, and even anger—from the ancient world up to our own day. Drawn from mystical, traditional, biblical, Talmudic, Hasidic, and modern sources, these prayers will help deepen Jewish men’s relationship with God and help guide their journey of self-discovery, healing and spiritual awareness. Together they provide a powerful and creative expression of Jewish men’s inner lives, and the always revealing, sometimes painful, sometimes joyous—and often even practical—endeavor that prayer can be. Jewish Men Pray will challenge preconceived ideas about prayer. It will inspire readers to explore new ways of prayerful expression, new paths for finding the sacred in the ordinary, and new possibilities for understanding the Jewish relationship with the Divine. This is a book to treasure and to share.

the Chocolate Trail A Delicious Adventure Connecting Jews, Religions, History, Travel, Rituals and Recipes to the Magic of Cacao By Rabbi Deborah R. Prinz
The next time you pick up a piece of chocolate, consider that you are partaking in an aspect of Jewish history. Explore the surprising Jewish connections to chocolate in this historical and gastronomic adventure through cultures, countries, centuries and religions. Rabbi Deborah Prinz draws from her world travels on the trail of chocolate to enchant chocolate lovers of all backgrounds as she unwraps tales of Jews in the early chocolate trade to how Jewish values infuse chocolate today. She shows the intersections of Jews, pre-Columbians, Catholics and Protestants along the chocolate trail and the lasting rituals involving chocolate that the world’s faith traditions still share. Tasty tidbits include: • Chocolate making in seventeenth-century Amsterdam, home to the largest and wealthiest Jewish community of its time, was known as a special Jewish industry. • Bayonne chocolate makers today advertise that Jews brought chocolate making to France. • Chocolate Hanukkah gelt may have developed from St. Nicholas customs. • Jews pioneered chocolate in North America as successful and well-known American colonial Jewish merchants such as Abraham Lopez and Nathan Simson traded cacao and manufactured chocolate. • A born-again Christian businessman in the Midwest marketed his caramel chocolate bar as a “Noshy,” after the Yiddish word for “snack.” • Jewish values of caring for the needy, pursuing economic justice, protecting the environment and promoting sustainability feed into the organic and fair trade chocolate businesses of today.

of Jewish Spirit How to Revive Ruakh in Your Spiritual Life, Transform Your Synagogue & Inspire Your Jewish Community By Rabbi Baruch HaLevi, DMin and Ellen Frankel, LCSW Foreword by Dr. Ron Wolfson
Prepare to revive your Jewish community with the transformative power of the divine spirit.
Religion / Judaism / Leadership 6 x 9, 250 pp (est) Quality PB Original 978-1-58023- $19.99 Available September 2012 Authors’ Home Area: Boston
Growing numbers of Jews have become disengaged with the religion of their birth. They feel that Judaism fails to speak to them in meaningful ways, and that Jewish institutions and communities have become both stagnant and reactive. Rabbi Baruch HaLevi, one of the most inspirational and motivational Jewish leaders in America today, and Ellen Frankel, author and speaker, offer a proactive response for reengaging Jews, reclaiming Judaism and reviving Jewish community. They draw from the great success of HaLevi’s Congregation Shirat Hayam in Greater Boston to show what is possible when divine spirit is central to the Jewish experience. They identify the difference between a living synagogue and a dying synagogue and offer methods for reviving Jewish spiritual centers, federations, Jewish community centers, Jewish institutions and synagogues that serve as the heart of the Jewish tradition. They offer practical strategies for sustaining and expanding transformation, including tips for providing impassioned leadership, inspired programming and inviting sacred spaces.
Rabbi Baruch HaLevi, DMin, a dynamic speaker on the topics of Judaism, spirituality, and building inclusive communities of faith, is spiritual leader of Congregation Shirat Hayam, one of the fastest growing synagogues in Greater Boston. Ellen Frankel, LCSW, is a popular speaker and author of many books on topics related to spirituality and health. In addition, her work has been published in The Boston Globe, The Jewish Journal North of Boston and The Jewish Advocate, among other publications. Dr. Ron Wolfson is Fingerhut Professor of Education at American Jewish University in Los Angeles and cofounderpresident of Synagogue 3000. Passing Life’s Tests
Spiritual Reflections on the Trial of Abraham, the Binding of Isaac By Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, DHL
How can we live richer lives through contemplating God’s merciless demand, the horror of Abraham’s test, the faith of Isaac’s participation— and see our own opportunity to grow by reliving the encounter? Among stories so terrible they rend our hearts, so profound they touch the depths of our souls, and so exalted they reach to heaven, none is more poignant than the Bible story of Abraham’s sacrifice of his son, Isaac. Revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims, turned over and over by great secular thinkers searching for meaning, this gripping tale shocks us into complete attention, then takes us—in fourteen short verses—on a roller coaster ride of emotion, challenge and hope. Brad Artson, known widely for making the Hebrew Bible relevant to our lives, draws on generations of Jewish sages, philosophers and scholars to explore this ancient story, known by Jews as the binding of Isaac and often referred to in English as the test of Abraham. Through his own probing commentary and insightful spiritual reflections, he challenges us to go beneath the simple shocking story and ask: who is the tester, who is the tested and what motivates the test? He invites us to use this powerful tale as a tool for our own soul wrestling, to transcend its words to confront our own existential sacrifices and our ability to face— and surmount—life’s tests.

What Cognitive Science Reveals about Belief, Morality, Community and Our Relationship with God By Rabbi Ralph D. Mecklenburger Foreword by Dr. Howard Kelfer Preface by Rabbi Neil Gillman, PhD
A revolution in human self-understanding is underway—what does it mean for religion and our belief in god? A groundbreaking, accessible look at the implications of cognitive science for religion and theology, intended for laypeople. Avoiding neurological jargon and respectful to all faiths, it examines: • Current theory on how our brains construct our world in order to guide us safely through life, creating and appreciating meaning as we go. • What religious experience is as it plays out in our brains. • How modern science challenges historic ideas about free will and undermines the religious concept of the soul as a meta-physical entity separable from the body. • What cognitive science reveals about our need for community. • Why we should be loyal to one faith if, in fact, Religion / Religion & Science all major religious traditions deal effectively with 6 x 9, 224 pp, Hardcover universal human needs. 978-1-58023-508-2 $24.99

to Critic The Search for a New Jewish Self By Dr. David Hartman
A vital, living Judaism can be found when the voice of the past engages modern experience. Dr. David Hartman, the world’s leading modern Orthodox theologian, presents his own painful spiritual evolution from defender of the rule-based system of Jewish law to revolutionary proponent of a theology of empowerment, one that encourages individuals and communities to take greater levels of responsibility for their religious lives. In this daring self-examination, he explains how his goals were not to strip halakha—or the past—of its authority but to create a space for questioning and critique that allows for the traditionally religious Jew to act out a moral life in tune with modern experience. In achieving this synthesis of tradition with the sensibilities of contemporary Judaism, Hartman captures precisely what creates vitality in living Judaism and charts the path to nurture its vitality forever. I’m God; You’re Not
Observations on Organized Religion & Other Disguises of the Ego By Rabbi Lawrence Kushner
Flashes of insight—sometimes startling, always entertaining—from one of the most creative spiritual writers in America. New in Paperback! Tapping the experiences and wisdom of his career as a spiritual leader, Lawrence Kushner delights, surprises, challenges and inspires us. With his signature candor, wit and compassion, he helps us reconnect with the why and how of our spiritual lives. He encourages us to find new perspectives on the “life-stuff” that shapes them, and gently reminds us of the Source of it All. These inspiring—often startling—insights will warm you during the dark times of your own doubts even as they brighten your quest for meaning, faith, identity, community—and holiness. “The goal of all spiritual life is to get your ego out of the way—outwit the sucker; dissolve it; shoot it; kill it. Silence the incessant planning, organizing, running, manipulating, possessing, and processing that are the ineluctable redoubts of the ego. Not because these activities are bad or wrong or even narcissistic … but because they preclude awareness of the Divine. To paraphrase the Talmud, God says, ‘There ain’t room enough in this here world for your ego and Me. You pick.’” —from the Introduction “Breezy [and] accessible … Kushner[’s] wisdom, realism and the sources he calls upon demonstrate the depth and perceptiveness of his approach to difficult problems.” —Publishers Weekly “A familiar, comforting, yet invigorating assembly of reflections.” —Library Journal by

Sacred Treasure—The Cairo Genizah
The Amazing Discoveries of Forgotten Jewish History in an Egyptian Synagogue Attic By Rabbi Mark Glickman
Indiana Jones meets The Da Vinci Code in an old Egyptian synagogue—the amazing story of one of the most important discoveries in modern religious scholarship. New in Paperback!
Judaism / History 6 x 9, 288 pp, Quality PB b/w photos 978-1-58023-512-9 $18.99 Hardcover, 978-1-58023-431-3 $24.99 Rabbi Mark Glickman, a popular speaker on Judaism and modern life, is rabbi of Congregations Kol Ami in Woodinville, Washington, and Kol Shalom, on Bainbridge Island, Washington. He writes a regular religion column for the Seattle Times and has been featured in other books and journals.
In 1896, Rabbi Solomon Schechter of Cambridge University stepped into the attic of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo, Egypt, and there found the largest treasure trove of medieval and early manuscripts ever discovered. He had entered the synagogue’s genizah—its repository for damaged and destroyed Jewish texts— which held nearly 300,000 individual documents, many of which were over 1,000 years old. Considered among the most important discoveries in modern religious history, its contents contained early copies of some of the Dead Sea Scrolls, early manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible and other sacred literature. The importance of the genizah’s contents rivals that of the Rosetta Stone, and by virtue of its sheer mass alone, it will continue to command our attention indefinitely. This is the first accessible, comprehensive account of this astounding discovery. It will delight you with its fascinating adventure story—why this enormous collection was amassed, how it was discovered and the many lessons to be found in its contents. And it will show you how Schechter’s find, though still being “unpacked” today, forever transformed our knowledge of the Jewish past, Muslim history and much more. “Brings the colorful story up to date…. Anyone who loves books and history will relish this.” —American Library Association’s Booklist

Reimagining Leadership Organizations

Ten Practical Lessons to Help You Implement Change and Achieve Your Goals By Dr. Misha Galperin Foreword by Larry S. Moses
Practical and inspiring guidance for leading with more conviction, commitment and passion in a complex institutional world. For over one hundred years, the American Jewish community has built a remarkable network of institutions to help manage fundraising, education and social welfare initiatives. Virtually every one of these organizations is currently preoccupied with issues of leadership from succession planning to board development to conflict management. This urgent need for leadership guidance is occurring at the same time organizational life has come under question, with young leaders often claiming that established Jewish organizations are afraid of innovation and change. In this charged atmosphere, this book serves as a practical guidepost for lay and professional leaders to evaluate the current paradigm with insights from the world of business, psychology and research in Jewish demographics and sociology. Accessible and finely focused, it is supported by vignettes from the field that illustrate the successes of the lessons as well as the consequences of not implementing them.

Recently Published—Bible The Book
of Job Annotated & Explained Translation and Annotation by Donald Kraus Foreword by Dr. Marc Brettler
A book from SkyLight Paths, Jewish Lights’ sister imprint
An inviting guide to a classic that challenges God’s justice.
Religion / Biblical Studies 5½ x 8½, 256 pp Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-389-5 $16.99 Donald Kraus, executive editor for Bibles at Oxford University Press, has produced such highprofile projects as The Catholic Study Bible; The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha; The Jewish Study Bible; and The Jewish Annotated New Testament. Dr. Marc Brettler is the Dora Golding Professor of Biblical Studies and former chair of the department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University.
The Book of Job, celebrated as a classic of world literature and one of the glories of the Bible, can often be puzzling and frustrating: puzzling for its dialogue form and off-putting because in places it doesn’t seem to make sense. The book was written in a world very different from ours, and yet the fundamental questions are very much our own: Is it worthwhile to act for the best? Does life have a meaning beyond itself? Are there any answers to our questions? Donald Kraus, the longtime editor of Oxford Study Bibles, clarifies for today’s readers what Job is, how to overcome difficulties in the text and what it may mean for us. Kraus’s fresh translation captures some of the finest poetry in the Hebrew Bible as well as recovers some of the original author’s intent. His probing commentary explores Job’s daring challenges to God’s goodness, questions about the basic fairness of existence and compelling descriptions of the glories of the created world and the bitter sorrows of human life. Kraus identifies and clarifies problem areas in the text, invites us to enter into Job’s dialogue and stimulates thoughtful consideration of life’s intractable questions. About SkyLight Illuminations SkyLight Illuminations offers today’s spiritual seeker an enjoyable entry into the great classic texts of the world’s spiritual traditions. Each classic is presented in an accessible translation, with facing pages of guided commentary from experts, offering readers the keys they need to understand the history, context and meaning of the text. The series enables readers of all backgrounds to experience and understand classic spiritual texts directly, and to make them a part of their lives.

Fly-Fishing—The Sacred Art Casting a Fly as a Spiritual Practice By Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer and Rev. Michael Attas, MD Foreword by Chris Wood Preface by Lori Simon
In this unique exploration of fly-fishing as a spiritual practice, an Episcopal priest and a rabbi share what fly-fishing has to teach us about reflection, awe and wonder of the natural world, the benefits of solitude, the blessing of community and the search for the Divine. Tapping the wisdom in the Jewish and Christian traditions and their own geographically diverse experiences on the water, they show how time spent on the stream can help you navigate the currents and eddies of your own inner journey. With charm, wit and passion, they delve into the significance of: • Escaping the Everyday • Fly-Casting & Finding Your Place in Nature • Mindfulness During and After Your Trip • Fly-Fishing Community & Sharing Common Ground • Insightful Surprises in Unfamiliar Terrain • Expanding & Expressing Your Creativity through Fly-Tying • Tapping Your Inner Steward & Giving Back to the Stream

What We Found at the Heart of Interfaith By Rabbi Ted Falcon, Pastor Don Mackenzie and Imam Jamal Rahman
A book from SkyLight Paths, Jewish Lights’ sister imprint
Welcome to the deeper dimensions of interfaith dialogue— exploring that which divides us personally, spiritually and institutionally. Expanding on the conversation started with their very successful first book, the Interfaith Amigos—a pastor, a rabbi and an imam—probe more deeply into the problem aspects of our religious institutions to provide a profound understanding of the nature of what divides us. They identify four common problem areas in the Abrahamic faiths: Exclusivity: Staking Claim to a One and Only Truth Violence: Justifying Brutality in the Name of Faith Inequality of Men and Women: The Patriarchal Stranglehold on Power Homophobia: A Denial of Legitimacy They explore the origins of these issues and the ways critics use these beliefs as divisive weapons. And they present ways we can use these vulnerabilities to open doors for the collaboration required to address our common issues, more profound personal relationships and true interfaith healing.
Religion / Interfaith 6 x 9, 192 pp, Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-317-8 $16.99 Rabbi Ted Falcon, PhD, Pastor Don Mackenzie, PhD, and Imam Jamal Rahman, coauthors of Getting to the Heart of Interfaith: The Eye-Opening, Hope-Filled Friendship of a Pastor, a Rabbi & an Imam and former hosts of Interfaith Talk Radio in Seattle, share an evolving process to deepen interfaith awareness. Their work promotes greater understanding between faith and also non-faith people and communities in order to discover the kinds of energies that can help transform and heal both person and planet.

All Politics Is Religious
Speaking Faith to the Media, Policy Makers and Community By Rabbi Dennis S. Ross Foreword by Rev. Barry W. Lynn
A practical and empowering resource. It provides ideas and strategies for expressing a clear, forceful and progressive religious point of view that is all too often overlooked and under-represented in public discourse. It identifies the religious themes in today’s great debates—gay rights, the needs of children and families, church-state separation and reproductive rights, including access to sex education, contraception and abortion care—and presents new language and methods for effective communication with the media, policy makers and community. It steers away from the polemics and jargon of politics—left, right, liberal, conservative, socialist—and instead relies on factual historical examples, current events and personal stories to illustrate the best ways to communicate the positive role faith can play in personal and public life by reinforcing the separation of church and state.
A book from SkyLight Paths, Jewish Lights’ sister imprint
Faith grows when we uphold its vision for a better world and speak of it in the public square— while keeping church and state separate.
