Who Are We?

Rabbinic Advisory Board

Given our name and subject matter, the tendency is immediately to pigeonhole us as “another publisher of Jewish books.” As we are publishing books of types that, in many cases, have not been published before, it is hard to find a simple category in which to place us. We recognize that it is also difficult to communicate this difference to a world that is used simply to categorizing things as “Jewish books” or “Judaica.” We don’t think of ourselves in either of those categories. We describe ourselves as publishing books that reflect the Jewish wisdom tradition for people of all faiths, all backgrounds. Our books really focus on the issue of the quest for the self, seeking meaning in life. They are books that help you to understand who you are and who you might become as a Jewish person, or as a person who is part of a tradition that has its roots in the JudeoChristian world. They deal with issues of personal growth. They deal with issues of religious inspiration.

What Are We Doing? People of all faiths and backgrounds yearn for books that attract, engage, educate and spiritually inspire. Our principal goal is to stimulate thought and help all people learn about who the Jewish People are, where they come from and what the future can be made to hold. While people of our diverse Jewish heritage are the primary audience, our books speak to people in the Christian world as well and will broaden their understanding of Judaism and the roots of their own faith. Jewish Lights seeks out materials about the unity and community of the Jewish People and the relevance of Judaism to everyday life. To help us in these efforts, respectful of the rich diversity of the Jewish heritage, we have established an Advisory Board representing a broad range of Jewish perspectives. The Advisory Board helps seek out new material and provides insights into the publishing needs of the Jewish community. We bring to you authors who are at the forefront of spiritual thought and experience. While each has something different to say, they all say it in a voice that you can hear. Our books are designed to welcome the reader and then to engage, stimulate and inspire. We judge our success not only by whether or not our books are beautiful and commercially successful, but by whether or not they make a difference in your life.

Bible Study / Judaism—NEW BOOKS

MASKING

AND UNMASKING OURSELVES Interpreting Biblical Texts on Clothing & Identity AVAILABLE FEBRUARY 2012

By Dr. Norman J. Cohen

A fascinating look at the symbolic power of clothing in the Bible and what it reveals about identity and how we perceive it. Whatever the context in which it is worn, our clothing is often our most powerful form of communication. As in any great literature, the language of putting on and taking off clothing in the Bible—especially the narratives that turn on the symbolic use of clothes—can provide us with a sense of the overarching worldview of the biblical writers. Yet, by immersing ourselves in the symbolic language and stories of the Bible, we can also gain insight into ourselves and our own lives. In this engaging look at interpretations of clothing in the Bible, renowned Torah scholar and midrashist Norman Cohen presents ten paradigmatic Bible stories that involve clothing in an essential way, as a means of learning about the text, its characters and their interactions. But he also shows us how these stories help us confront our own life dramas, our own stories. In doing so, he presents Torah as a mirror, reflecting back to us our own personalities, ambivalences, struggles and potential for growth. By helping us uncover the “garments of Torah,” Cohen shows us how to shed our own layers of insulation to reveal our authentic selves.

Judaism / Bible Study 6 x 9, 240 pp (est), Hardcover 978-1-58023-461-0 $24.99 Dr. Norman J. Cohen, renowned for his expertise in Torah study and midrash, lectures frequently to audiences of many faiths. He is a rabbi, former provost of Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion, and professor of midrash. He is the author of Self, Struggle & Change: Family Conflict Stories in Genesis and Their Healing Insights for Our Lives; Moses and the Journey to Leadership: Timeless Lessons of Effective Management from the Bible and Today’s Leaders (both Jewish Lights); and other books.

NEW BOOKS—Judaism / Talmud THE OTHER TALMUD—THE YERUSHALMI

Unlocking the Secrets of The Talmud of Israel for Judaism Today AVAILABLE FEBRUARY 2012

By Rabbi Judith Z. Abrams, PhD

A fascinating—and fun—look at “the other Talmud” and the possibilities for Jewish life reflected there. Today’s Judaism is based on the Babylonian Talmud, the Bavli. All the law codes we have are based on this Talmud. But what if the other Talmud, the Yerushalmi— the “Talmud of the Land of Israel”—had won? What would that mean for the practice of Judaism today? This engaging look at the Judaism that might have been breaks open the Talmud of the Land of Israel, which is growing in popularity. It examines what the Yerushalmi is, how it differs from the Bavli, and how and why the Bavli is used today. It reveals how the Yerushalmi’s vision of Jewish practice resembles today’s liberal Judaism. You’ll explore the many ways this Talmud would have influenced all aspects of Jewish life: • What kind of mysticism would you practice? • How would you meditate? • How would holiday celebrations differ from those we have today?

Judaism 6 x 9, 250 pp (est), Hardcover 978-1-58023-463-4 $24.99

• How would you pray? • What would be your greatest virtues? Your most terrible sins?

Rabbi Judith Z. Abrams, PhD, is a frequent speaker on the topics of Jewish learning and sacred literature around the United States. She is the founder and director of Maqom: A School for Adult Talmud Study and author of Learn Talmud and A Talmud Tale, among other books.

• What kind of karma would you believe in?

Judaism / Torah—NEW BOOKS

THE TORAH REVOLUTION

Fourteen Truths That Changed the World By Rabbi Reuven Hammer, PhD

Unlock the truths that shattered ancient beliefs and paved the way for the new and revolutionary religion that eventually became Judaism. This is a unique look at the Torah—the foundation of Jewish existence—and the revolutionary teachings of Moses embedded within it that gave birth to Judaism and influenced the world. Dr. Reuven Hammer presents fourteen radical ideas found in Torah, explains their original intentions, and shows how understanding these “truths” can help you better understand the narrative and laws of Judaism. He shows how when taken together, these value concepts present a picture of human life that is surprisingly modern and relevant to our goals for repairing the world today: • Humanity is one as God is one • Human beings are responsible for their actions and have the choice to do good or evil • Poverty, deprivation, slavery and hatred are evils that must be eradicated • The earth is not ours to destroy • The love of others is a divine command • And much more … “Plumb[s] both the moral depths and spiritual power of Torah … with eloquence and excellence.” —Rabbi Julie Schonfeld, executive vice president, the Rabbinical Assembly

NEW BOOKS—Judaism / Spirituality THE SABBATH SOUL

Mystical Reflections on the Transformative Power of Holy Time Selection,Translation and Commentary by Eitan Fishbane, PhD

Enter into the mystery of the Sabbath, into the wonder and light of the seventh day. Enrich your spiritual experience of Shabbat by exploring the writings of mystical masters of Hasidism. Drawing from the origins of the movement in lateeighteenth-century Poland to late-twentieth-century Jerusalem, Eitan Fishbane evokes the Sabbath experience—from candle lighting and donning white clothing to the Friday night Kiddush and the act of sacred eating. Fishbane also translates and interprets a wide range of Hasidic sources previously unavailable in English that reflect the spiritual transformation that takes place on the seventh day—one that can shift your awareness into the realm that is all soul. Personal prayers of the Bratzlav (Breslov) Hasidic tradition express the spiritual dimension of Shabbat in the language of devotional and individual yearning. “Moving.... Fresh [and] new, filled with ancient wisdom. Readers will want to use this book for reflection and teaching around the Shabbat table.”

In this fresh translation of an ancient “how-to,” Rami Shapiro unpacks the proverbs, demonstrating how these complex poetic forms are actually straightforward instructions to live simply, without rationalizations and excuses. He shows how unlike almost Religion / Judaism / Christianity anything else in the Hebrew Bible, the truths claimed in the Book 1 5 ⁄2 x 81⁄2, 288 pp, Quality PB Original of Proverbs are testable and verifiable. They force us to examine 978-1-59473-310-9 $16.99 our lives and how we are living them without the benefit of psychological sophistry and New Age babble: We are either doing good or doing bad; we are either disciplined or lazy; we are either students of wisdom or puppets of desire. Rabbi Rami Shapiro is a renowned teacher of spirituality across faith traditions. He is author of The Sacred Art of Lovingkindness: Preparing to Practice; The Divine Feminine in Biblical Wisdom Literature: Selections Annotated & Explained; and Ecclesiastes:Annotated & Explained (all SkyLight Paths), among other books.

THE GOD WHO HATES LIES

Confronting & Rethinking Jewish Tradition By Dr. David Hartman with Charlie Buckholtz

Covenant & Conscience— A Groundbreaking Journey to the Heart of Halakha In this deeply personal look at the struggle between commitment to Jewish religious tradition and personal morality, Dr. David Hartman, the world’s leading Modern Orthodox Jewish theologian, probes the deepest questions at the heart of what it means to be a human being and a Jew. Dr. Hartman draws on a lifetime of learning, teaching and experience as a social activist to present an intellectual framework for examining covenantal theology as it is applied to religious life. As much an expression of his impassioned commitment to Jewish law as it is testament to a lifetime of intellectual questioning and courage, this bold examination of the halakhic system offers fresh insights into Judaism and the quest for spiritual nourishment. “A trenchant and controversial statement of Jewish theology…. No thinking Jew can afford to ignore this book.”

SAGE TALES

Wisdom and Wonder from the Rabbis of the Talmud By Rabbi Burton L.Visotzky

These ancient stories whisper truth to your soul. Great stories have the power to draw the heart. OF ME Imagining God throughout Your Lifetime By Rabbi David Lyon

The God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob … God of me. There is no easy prescription for how to know God, yet everyone can pursue a personal relationship with God, just as our patriarchs and matriarchs did in their lives. How we come to know God, however, is unique to each of us, influenced by our study of Torah and the insights of the Rabbis of antiquity, as well as our own experiences throughout our lifetime. To open the way for you to find God’s presence in your life, Rabbi David Lyon uses the central prayer in Jewish worship, the Amidah, as a starting point, and guides you compellingly through classic Torah texts and midrash. He helps you clear away preconceived images of God from your childhood or dogmas that restrict your experience of God in personal and meaningful ways today. Combining profound teachings from Jewish sources with insights and experiences from real life, he shows how you can enjoy a unique relationship with God— the God of you, your God of me.

THE GOD UPGRADE

Finding Your 21st-Century Spirituality in Judaism’s 5,000-Year-Old Tradition By Rabbi Jamie S. Korngold Foreword by Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis

FEATURED IN USA TODAY

For people who don’t believe that God can intervene in our lives, and why Judaism is still important. For some people, the biggest stumbling block in religion is God—even for an ordained rabbi who admits her rational mind “can’t buy into a God in the sky who writes down our deeds and rewards and punishes us accordingly.” But not being sold on an intervening God shouldn’t bar you from living a vibrant and fulfilling Jewish life. The God concept has seen many upgrades over the centuries, and it is these reinterpretations that have kept Judaism relevant. In this provocative look at the ways in which God concepts have evolved and been upgraded through the centuries, Adventure Rabbi Jamie Korngold examines how our changing ideas of God have shaped every aspect of Judaism. With enthusiasm and humor, she shows that by aligning our understanding of God with modern sensibilities, Judaism can be made more meaningful, accessible and fully compatible with twenty-first-century life. “Funny, honest and passionate … a provocative, intriguing and always interesting exploration of Jewish theology that will grab you from the first page. Godwrestlers, this book is for you!” —Dr. Ron Wolfson, co-president, Synagogue 3000; author, God’s To-Do List: 103 Ways to Be an Angel and Do God’s Work on Earth

The Tale of Exodus and Wilderness across Millennia By Rabbi Arthur O.Waskow and Rabbi Phyllis O. Berman

How does the story of the Exodus echo in our own generation and in our own lives?

Judaism / Passover 6 x 9, 288 pp, Hardcover 978-1-58023-445-0 $24.99 Rabbi Arthur O. Waskow, an innovative and inspiring spiritual leader and frequent speaker on the topics of Jewish life, community and social justice, is director of the Shalom Center and author of Godwrestling—Round 2: Ancient Wisdom, Future Paths;Torah of the Earth: Exploring 4,000 Years of Ecology in Jewish Thought (both Jewish Lights); Down-to-Earth Judaism and other books. Rabbi Phyllis O. Berman is co-author, with Rabbi Waskow, of A Time for Every Purpose Under Heaven:The Jewish Life-Spiral as a Spiritual Path.

The story Jews retell on Passover is about rising up against tyranny, about the triumph of the God who sides with the despised against a resplendent emperor. Exploring how this tale applies to our own time enriches the ancient account—and it expands and transforms the community for which Exodus is a collective family story. Exodus is not only the saga of the escape from slavery, but also a story of courage, celebration, rebirth and community from which people of all faith traditions have learned and can continue to learn. Calling us to relearn and rethink the Passover story, Rabbi Arthur O. Waskow and Rabbi Phyllis O. Berman share: • The enduring spiritual resonance of the Hebrews’ journey for our own time • Social justice, ecological and feminist perspectives on the Exodus • How the Passover story has been adapted and used by African American as well as Christian and Muslim communities to provide insight and inspiration. With contributions by: Dr. Vincent Harding: “Exodus in African America: A Great Camp Meeting” Dr. S. A momentous multi-volume series.… Opens up the traditional Jewish prayer book. This momentous, critically acclaimed series is truly a people’s prayer book, one that provides a diverse and exciting commentary to the traditional liturgy. It will help you find new wisdom and guidance in Jewish prayer, and bring the liturgy into your life. It also has received significant attention in the Christian world. The major sections of the prayer book are each covered in separate volumes in this series. My People’s Prayer Book provides in each volume: • The traditional Hebrew text • A modern translation (designed to let people know exactly what the prayers actually say) • Commentators from all perspectives of the Jewish world, including some of today’s most respected Jewish scholars and teachers, who cover the prayer book’s connections to the Bible, history, traditional law, kabbalistic wisdom, feminism, modern developments and much more This stunning work, an important expression of the spiritual revival of our times, enables all worshipers to claim their connection to the heritage of the traditional Jewish prayer book. It rejuvenates Jewish worship in today’s world, and makes its power accessible to all.

By Rabbi Lawrence Kushner and Karen Kushner; Full-color illus. by Dawn W. Majewski A gentle way for young children to explore how God is with us every day, in every way.

To young children, the world is full of things to see and touch. And by using those very examples, these enchanting books gently invite children to become aware of God’s presence all around us. Abridged from Because Nothing Looks Like God by Rabbi Lawrence Kushner and Karen Kushner, How Does God Make Things Happen?, What Does God Look Like? and Where Is God? have been specially adapted to board book format to delight and inspire younger readers (all Jewish Lights). “A beautiful little doorway into a lifelong conversation about God, about wonder, about our place in the universe.” —Anita Diamant, author, The Red Tent and The New Jewish Baby Book For bios: Rabbi Sandy Eisenberg Sasso, see p. 50; Rabbi Lawrence Kushner and Karen Kushner, see p. 52; Dawn W. Majewski, see p. 52.
