SAYING NO
AND LETTING GO Jewish Wisdom on Making Room for What Matters Most By Rabbi Edwin Goldberg, DHL Foreword by Rabbi Naomi Levy
An inspiring introduction to the most important lesson for today’s busy world: the “take away” is to “take away.” Every day we are faced with choices that entail saying no—and frankly we’re not very good at it. Whether it’s the desire to please, get ahead, accumulate or impress, our lives have become so full and so busy that it is hard to determine what we really need and what’s really important to us. The purpose of this book is to help you take back control of the things that matter most in your life. It taps timeless Jewish wisdom that teaches how to “hold on tightly” to the things that matter most while learning to “let go lightly” of the demands, worries, activities and conflicts that do not ultimately matter. Drawing insights from ancient and modern sources, it helps you identify your core values as well as the opportunities that do not reflect those values, and that you can learn to pass up. It also shows you how to establish a disciplined practice to help you adhere to your choices. Whether it’s letting go of resentment, learning to say “no” at work or to your loved ones, downsizing your diet or asking less of the earth, this book will help you distinguish between the trivial and the profound. It will show you how saying “no” can bring many more opportunities for “yes.” “Offers us a path to sanity and a return to love and meaningful relationships…. Set aside the time to read this book in peace and quiet. Within it you will find a path back to your own life.” —Rabbi Naomi Levy, bestselling author, To Begin Again

NEW BOOKS—Theology THE MESSIAH
AND THE JEWS Three Thousand Years of Tradition, Belief and Hope By Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman
A comprehensive, inspiring and fascinating discovery of what Jews believe about the Messiah— and why you might believe in the Messiah, too. The coming of the Messiah—the promise of redemption—is perhaps Judaism’s greatest gift to the world. But it is a gift about which the world knows so little. It has been overshadowed by Christian belief and teaching, and as a result its Jewish significance has been all but lost. To further complicate matters, Jewish messianic teaching is enthralling, compelling, challenging, exhilarating—yet, up until now, woefully inaccessible. The Messiah and the Jews will change that. Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman brings together, and to life, this three-thousand-year-old tradition as never before. Rather than simply reviewing the vast body of Jewish messianic literature, she explores an astonishing range of primary and secondary sources, explaining in an informative yet inspirational way these teachings’ significance for Jews of the past—and infuses them with new meaning for the modern reader, both Jewish and non-Jewish. Truly unmatched in its range, scholarship and insight—and unique in its accessibility and engaging style—The Messiah and the Jews will capture the attention of interested people of every background and level of knowledge seeking wisdom, wonder and—above all—hope.

RELATIONAL JUDAISM
Using the Power of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community By Dr. Ron Wolfson
How to transform the model of twentieth-century Jewish institutions into twenty-first-century relational communities offering meaning and purpose, belonging and blessing. Membership in Jewish organizations is down. Day school enrollment has peaked. Federation campaigns are flat. The fastest growing and second largest category of Jews is “Just Jewish.” Young Jewish adults are unengaged and aging baby boomers are disengaging. Yet, in the era of Facebook, people crave face-to-face community. “It’s all about relationships.” With this simple, but profound idea, noted educator and community revitalization pioneer Dr. Ron Wolfson presents practical strategies and case studies to transform the old model of Jewish programmatic institutions into relational communities. He sets out nine principles of relational engagement to guide Jewish lay leaders and professionals in transforming institutions into inspiring communities whose value-proposition is to engage people and connect them to community in a meaningful and lasting way.
Praise for Dr. Ron Wolfson’s Work “A spiritual guide for combating the most unsuspecting problem of the modern era…. Offer[s] probable solutions … intriguing…. JEWISH MEGATRENDS
Charting the Course of the American Jewish Future By Rabbi Sidney Schwarz Foreword by Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat
Visionary solutions to a community ripe for transformational change—from fourteen leading innovators of Jewish life. The American Jewish community is riddled with doubts about the viability of the institutions that well served the Jewish community of the twentieth century. Synagogues, federations and Jewish membership organizations have yet to figure out how to meet the changing interests and needs of the next generation. In this challenging yet hopeful call for transformational change, visionary leader Rabbi Sidney Schwarz looks at the social norms that are shaping the habits and lifestyles of younger American Jews and why the next generation is so resistant to participation in the institutions of Jewish communal life as they currently exist. He sets out four guiding principles that can drive a renaissance in Jewish life and gives evidence of how, on the margins of the Jewish community, those principles are already generating enthusiasm and engagement from the very Millennials that the organized Judaism Jewish community has yet to engage. 6 x 9, 288 pp, Hardcover Contributors—leading innovators from different 978-1-58023-667-6 $24.99 Available March 2013 sectors of the Jewish community—each use Rabbi Author’s Home Area: Washington, DC Schwarz’s framework as a springboard to set forth Rabbi Sidney Schwarz, a senior fellow at Clal—The National Jewish Center for their particular vision for Learning and Leadership, founded Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in the future of their sector of Bethesda, Maryland, as well as PANIM: The Institute for Jewish Leadership and Values. NEW BOOKS—Judaism / Mysticism SPEAKING TORAH
Spiritual Teachings from around the Maggid’s Table—in Two Volumes Edited by Arthur Green with Ebn Leader, Ariel Evan Mayse and Or N. Rose
The most powerful Hasidic teachings made accessible—from some of the world’s preeminent authorities on Jewish thought and spirituality. Hasidism, a great movement of spiritual revival within Judaism, began in eighteenth-century Eastern Europe and continues to have great influence on Jewish life today. A key tool of this revival was the oral sermon, using novel mystical readings of the Torah to open people’s minds to thinking more profoundly about the texts and how the wisdom relates directly to their own lives. While Hasidic tales have become widely known to modern audiences, the teachings that stand at the very heart of Hasidism have remained a closed book for all except scholars. This fascinating selection—presented in two volumes following the weekly Torah reading and the holiday cycle, and featured in English and Hebrew—renders them accessible in an extraordinary way. Volume 1 covers Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus, Judaism / Spirituality / Mysticism and includes a history of early Hasidism and a summary Volume 1—6 x 9, 350 pp (est), Hardcover of central religious teachings of the Maggid’s school. 978-1-58023-668-3 $24.99 Volume 2—6 x 9, 350 pp (est), Hardcover Volume 2 covers Numbers and Deuteronomy and the 978-1-58023-694-2 $24.99 holiday cycle, and includes brief biographies of the HaAvailable May 2013 sidic figures. JEWISH MEN PRAY
Words of Yearning, Praise, Petition, Gratitude and Wonder from Traditional and Contemporary Sources Edited by Rabbi Kerry M. Olitzky and Stuart M. Matlins Foreword by Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, DHL
A celebration of Jewish men’s voices in prayer—to strengthen, to heal, to comfort, to inspire. From well over one hundred contributors, this collection of prayers celebrates the variety of ways Jewish men engage in personal dialogue with God—with words of praise, petition, joy, gratitude, wonder and even anger—from the ancient world up to our own day. Drawn from mystical, traditional, biblical, Talmudic, Hasidic and modern sources, these prayers will help deepen Jewish men’s relationship with God and help guide their journey of self-discovery, healing and spiritual awareness. Together they provide a powerful and creative expression of Jewish men’s inner lives, and the always revealing, sometimes painful, sometimes joyous—and often even practical—endeavor that prayer can be. Jewish Men Pray will challenge preconceived ideas about prayer. It will inspire readers to explore new ways of prayerful expression, new paths for finding the sacred in the ordinary, and new possibilities for understanding the Jewish relationship with the Divine. This is a book to treasure and to share.

WITH FEELING A Guide to Meaningful Jewish Practice By Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi with Joel Segel
A how-to for Jewish spirituality that works.
Judaism / Spirituality 6 x 9, 240 pp Quality PB Original 978-1-58023-691-1 $19.99 Available February 2013 Authors’ Home Areas: Boulder, CO, and Boston Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, known as “Reb Zalman,” the inspiration of the Jewish Renewal movement, is widely recognized as one of the most important Jewish spiritual teachers of the second half of the twentieth century. Joel Segel, formerly an editor at Shambhala Publications, is coauthor of Davening: A Guide to Meaningful Jewish Prayer with Reb Zalman.
“A spiritual seeker is a person whose soul is awake. In this book I make no assumptions about how much you know about Judaism, what holidays you keep, or whether you believe in God. I want us to start from your soul’s experience and carry on from there.” “Virtually anyone remotely affiliated with Judaism should read this book,” wrote Publishers Weekly, who listed Jewish with Feeling among its Best Religion Books of the Year. “Without question the best, most readable introduction to Reb Zalman’s philosophy of Judaism, it is also the best beginner’s guide to Jewish spirituality available today,” wrote the Forward, “the perfect book for both the spiritual seeker and the curious skeptic.” Taking off from basic questions like “Why be Jewish?” and whether the word God still speaks to us today, Reb Zalman lays out a vision for a wholeEarth, whole-person Judaism. This is not only Sinai then but Sinai now, a revelation of the Torah inside and all around us. Complete with numerous suggestions to enrich your own Jewish life, Jewish with Feeling is “a mystical masterpiece filled with spiritual practices and an exciting vision of the future” (Spirituality & Health). Spiritual experience, as Reb Zalman shows, repays every effort we make to acquire it. A Jewish Lights classic reprint.
Praise for Their Work “An inspiring and expansive vision of Judaism that is informed by mysticism, Hasidism, everyday spirituality, creative use of ritual and an intriguing understanding of meaningful Jewish practice.” —SpiritualityHealth.com

DAVENING
A Guide to Meaningful Jewish Prayer By Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi with Joel Segel Foreword by Rabbi Lawrence Kushner
A fresh approach to prayer for all who wish to appreciate the power of prayer’s poetry and song—and join the age-old conversation that Jews have had with God. Even Jews who pray regularly know how challenging prayer can be. Some are uneasy with the idea of God, of talking to God as an “Other,” of petitioning for their needs. Some have trouble with the Hebrew or remain unmoved by the prayer book’s kingly metaphors. Others are impatient with the shortcomings we perceive in our synagogues. They don’t understand why prayer is relevant to their lives. They want access to prayer they can truly mean rather than just recite. This fresh look at prayer practice offers a way around these problems through Hasidic spirituality and kabbalah. This is not prayer of obligation but prayer of invitation. Reb Zalman emphasizes the opportunities that prayer offers: opportunities for song and silence; for connection and remembrance; to unburden and to trust.
Praise for Their Work “Whether by birth, by marriage or by choice, whether practicing or not, virtually anyone remotely affiliated with Judaism should read this book.” —Publishers Weekly
“Refreshing … clearly written and takes nothing for granted…. It meets doubters and skeptics where they are, and proceeds with intellectual credibility —The Forward and rigor.”

PASSING LIFE’S TESTS
Spiritual Reflections on the Trial of Abraham, the Binding of Isaac By Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, DHL
How can we live richer lives through contemplating God’s merciless demand, the horror of Abraham’s test, the faith of Isaac’s participation— and see our own opportunity to grow by reliving the encounter?
Religion / Biblical Studies 6 x 9, 176 pp Quality PB Original 978-1-58023-631-7 $18.99 Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, DHL, is dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at American Jewish University, where he is vice president. He is author of over two hundred articles and nine books, including The Everyday Torah: Weekly Reflections and Inspirations.
Among stories so terrible they rend our hearts, so profound they touch the depths of our souls, and so exalted they reach to heaven, none is more poignant than the Bible story of Abraham’s sacrifice of his son, Isaac. A story revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims, and turned over and over by great secular thinkers searching for meaning, this gripping tale shocks us into complete attention, then takes us—in nineteen short verses—on a roller coaster ride of emotion, challenge and hope. Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, known widely for making the Hebrew Bible relevant to our lives, draws on generations of Jewish sages, philosophers and scholars to explore this ancient story, known as the binding of Isaac or the test of Abraham. He invites us to use this powerful tale as a tool for our own soul wrestling, to transcend its words to confront our own existential sacrifices and our ability to face— and surmount—life’s tests. By applying this tale’s lessons to everyday events, Artson compels us to pay closer attention to our lives and, through our priorities, responsibilities, mindfulness and faith, ask ourselves if we are passing our own tests.
“A treasure for all who long to make sense of the Torah’s most perplexing narrative.” —Rabbi Naomi Levy, author, Hope Will Find You; spiritual leader, Nashuva: The Jewish Spiritual Outreach Center
“Artson deserves an ‘A’ for effort. He belongs high in the ranks of those who have valiantly tackled an enigmatic story that defies decoding.” —Publishers Weekly

THE CHOCOLATE TRAIL A Delicious Adventure Connecting Jews, Religions, History, Travel, Rituals and Recipes to the Magic of Cacao By Rabbi Deborah R. Prinz
The next time you pick up a piece of chocolate, consider that you are partaking in an aspect of Jewish history. Explore the surprising Jewish and other religious connections to chocolate in this gastronomic and historical adventure through cultures, countries, centuries and convictions. Rabbi Deborah Prinz draws from her world travels on the trail of chocolate to enchant chocolate lovers of all backgrounds as she unravels religious connections in the early chocolate trade and shows how Jewish and other religious values infuse chocolate today. With mouth-watering recipes, a glossary of chocolaty terms, tips for buying luscious, ethically produced chocolate, a list of sweet chocolate museums around the world and more, this book unwraps tasty facts such as: • Chocolate making in seventeenth-century Amsterdam, home to the largest and wealthiest Jewish community of its time, was known as a special Jewish industry. • A born-again Christian businessman in the Midwest marketed his caramel chocolate bar as a “Noshy,” after the Yiddish word for “snack.” • Jewish values of caring for the needy, pursuing economic justice, protecting the environment and promoting sustainability feed into the organic and fair trade chocolate businesses of today. “A treat! Part history, part travelogue, part cookbook, [it] ... will tantalize all readers and delight chocoholic ones.”

AMAZING CHESED
Living a Grace-Filled Judaism By Rabbi Rami Shapiro
The question isn’t whether grace— God’s love freely given—is there for you in Judaism. The question is, do you have the courage to accept it? Ask almost any Jew whether grace is a central concept in Judaism and an essential element in living Jewishly, and, chances are, their answer will be “no.” But that’s the wrong answer. This fascinating foray into God’s love freely given offers the reader a way to answer that question in the affirmative. Drawing from ancient and contemporary, traditional and non-traditional Jewish wisdom, this book reclaims the idea of grace in Judaism in three ways: • It offers a view of God that helps the reader understand what grace is, why grace is, and how grace manifests in the world. • It sets forth a reading of Judaism that is grace-filled: an understanding of creation, Shabbat and other Jewish practices from a grace-filled perspective. • It challenges the reader to be embraced and transformed by grace, and to live life as a vehicle for God’s grace, thereby fulfilling the promise of being created in God’s image and likeness. “Explains the ‘practice of living graciously’ and draws on the ‘Ten Sayings’ to show that Jews can use God’s light to repair the world. This is not a book to race through, but one to puzzle over and ponder.” —American Library Association’s Booklist

The townspeople have mezuzahs but cannot agree on how to put them up on their doorways. Should they place them horizontally or vertically, standing up or lying down? To end their arguing, they consult the wise rabbi of the town, who advises them to carefully read the Shema in the mezuzah to find answers. With this lively tale, based on a twelfth-century rabbinic debate, best-selling, award-winning children’s author Sandy Eisenberg Sasso helps young people discover that there is often more than one solution to a problem, and that living together and creating “home” requires cooperation and listening to one another.
