What Are We Doing?
SkyLight Paths Publishing is creating a place where people of different spiritual traditions come together for challenge and inspiration, a place where we can help each other understand the mystery that lies at the heart of our existence. Through spirituality, our religious beliefs are increasingly becoming a part of our lives— rather than apart from our lives. While many of us may be more interested than ever in spiritual growth, we may be less firmly planted in traditional religion. Yet, we do want to deepen our relationship to the sacred, to learn from our own as well as from other faith traditions and to practice in new ways. SkyLight Paths sees both believers and seekers as a community that increasingly transcends traditional boundaries of religion and denomination—people wanting to learn from each other, walking together, finding the way.
SkyLight Paths recognizes that believers and seekers of different faith traditions, or no specific tradition, want to listen to and learn from each other as never before. We want to help them. This does not mean that our readers leave their own religious traditions behind. It does mean that they are open to one faith enriching another. SkyLight Paths will help believers deepen their faith and help seekers in their search. We will succeed only if our books make a difference in your life. We are all walking together, finding the way.

Interfaith—NEW BOOKS
RELIGION GONE ASTRAY What We Found at the Heart of Interfaith
Interfaith Amigos—featured in the New York Times, on CBS Evening News, and on NPR’s On Point and Here & Now
Pastor Don Mackenzie, Rabbi Ted Falcon and Imam Jamal Rahman
A challenging look at the deeper dimensions of interfaith dialogue— that which divides us personally, spiritually and institutionally. Virtually everyone acknowledges difficulty with some aspect of their own religious tradition, even if they are wholly devoted to their faith identity. These vulnerabilities can inhibit meaningful personal engagement with a faith tradition but they can also feed misunderstanding between religious institutions and undermine any hope of authentic interfaith dialogue. Expanding on the conversation started with their very successful first book, the Interfaith Amigos—a pastor, a rabbi and an imam—probe more deeply into the problem aspects of our religious institutions to provide a profound understanding of the nature of what divides us. They identify four common problem areas in the Abrahamic faiths—exclusivity, violence, inequality of men and women, and homophobia—and their origins. They explore the ways critics use these beliefs as divisive weapons. And they present the ways we can use these vulnerabilities to open the doors for more profound personal relationships, collaboration required to address our common issues, and true interfaith healing.

NEW BOOKS—Women’s Interest WOMEN, SPIRITUALITY AND TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP Where Grace Meets Power
Edited by Kathe Schaaf, Kay Lindahl, Kathleen S. Hurty, PhD, and Reverend Guo Cheen Foreword by Joan Chittister, OSB
A dynamic conversation on the power of women’s spiritual leadership and its emerging patterns of transformation. The world is in crisis and it seems that many are looking to women to heal the planet and our human family. Before women can step into our full potential as leaders and guides in this moment, we must individually reconnect with our deepest wisdom and with our spiritual roots; collectively heal the many dimensions of separation that keep us fragmented and ineffective as agents of social change; and globally reclaim our rightful place as spiritual leaders in service of a balanced and compassionate new paradigm. This empowering resource engages women in an interactive exploration of the challenges and opportunities on the frontier of women’s spiritual leadership. Through the voices of North American women representing a matrix of diversity—ethnically, spiritually, religiously, generationally and geographically—this book will inspire women to new expressions of their own personal leadership and invite them into powerful collaborative action. Topics include: • How do our spiritual values inform us about living with the challenges and blessings of diversity? • How do we stand for the greatness of each other? • How do we catalyze our collective transformational power as women of spirit and faith?

SAVING CIVILITY
52 Ways to Tame Rude, Crude and Attitude for a Polite Planet Sara Hacala
Is bad behavior the new normal? A candid call to action to restore respectful and meaningful engagement with each other. Polite and respectful behavior is vanishing from our world today. Bullying, hostile and polarizing political interactions, tasteless and tactless comments delivered without discretion, everyone talking at once but nobody listening—we are treating one another badly in our day-to-day lives, and our relationships are fragmenting and deteriorating as a result. It doesn’t have to be this way. Sara Hacala, a certified etiquette and protocol consultant, offers guidance that goes beyond the hollow display of proper manners and good conduct. Hacala presents civility as a mindset that encompasses values and attitudes that help us embrace our shared humanity and repair our society. She taps the wisdom of ancient spiritual luminaries as well as the latest social science research to provide fifty-two practical ways we can reverse the course of incivility and create a more enriching, pleasant place to live. Whether in our interpersonal lives, the workplace, our schools, or the world at large, she shows us benefits that civilized behavior—respectful, thoughtful, kind, inclusive and generous treatment of others—can provide, deepening our relationships and allowing us to live lives that are ultimately more meaningful. “Ardent and persuasive…. Penetrating analysis about the dearth of polite conduct in our society … offers cogent solutions that are easy to understand and adopt…. Extensive research … adds impact and credibility to this much-needed antidote to our national malaise.”

NEW BOOKS—Bible Study / Modern Midrash From Jewish Lights, SkyLight Paths’ Sister Imprint
MASKING
AND UNMASKING OURSELVES Interpreting Biblical Texts on Clothing & Identity Dr. Norman J. Cohen
A fascinating look at the symbolic power of clothing and what it reveals about our identity and how we perceive it.
Religion / Spirituality 6 x 9, 240 pp (est), Hardcover 978-1-58023-461-0 $24.99 Avail. October 2011 Author’s Home Area: New York City Dr. Norman J. Cohen, renowned for his expertise in Torah study and midrash, lectures frequently to audiences of many faiths. He is a rabbi, former provost of Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion, and professor of midrash. He is the author of Self, Struggle & Change: Family Conflict Stories in Genesis and Their Healing Insights for Our Lives; Moses and the Journey to Leadership: Timeless Lessons of Effective Management from the Bible and Today’s Leaders (both Jewish Lights); and other books.
Whatever the context in which it is worn, our clothing is often our most powerful form of communication. As in any great literature, the language of putting on and taking off clothing in the Bible—especially the narratives that hinge upon the symbolic use of clothes—can provide us with a sense of the overarching worldview of the biblical writers. Yet, by immersing ourselves in the symbolic language and stories of the Bible, we can also gain insight into ourselves and our own lives. In this engaging look at interpretations of clothing in the Bible, renowned Torah scholar and midrashist Norman Cohen presents ten paradigmatic Bible stories that involve clothing in an essential way, as a means of learning about the text, its characters and their interactions. But he also shows us how these stories help us confront our own life dramas, our own stories. In doing so, he presents Torah as a mirror, reflecting back to us our own personalities, ambivalences, struggles and potential for growth. By helping us uncover the “garments of Torah,” Cohen shows us how to shed our own layers of insulation to reveal our authentic selves.
Praise for Dr. Norman J. Cohen’s work: “A clearly delineated and persuasive guide…. Demonstrates the power behind the words and encourages readers to study Torah more profoundly and meaningfully…. Highly recommended.” —Library Journal

JOHN
AND CHARLES WESLEY: Selections from Their Writings and Hymns—Annotated & Explained Annotation by Paul W. Chilcote
The theological and spiritual writings of the founders of Methodism can be a companion for your own spiritual journey. John Wesley (1703–1791), Anglican priest, theologian, and church reformer, and his brother, Charles Wesley (1707–1788), one of the greatest hymn writers of all time, co-founded Methodism, a major movement of Christian renewal. Their vision of Christian discipleship included important spiritual discoveries that fueled the revival of the eighteenth-century Church of England. Their holistic theology/spirituality affords guidance for the contemporary seeker after God who yearns for greater meaning and purpose in life. This unique bifocal presentation of the work of these two amazing brothers brings together some of the most essential material from the large corpus of their work. While John articulated his vision of Christianity primarily through sermons, journals and theological treatises in over two hundred and fifty publications, Charles expressed his theology in lyrical form through the medium of the hymn, producing some nine thousand hymns and sacred poems in his lifetime. The excerpts from Charles and John Wesley, with probing facing-page commentary, will provide insight not only into the renewal of dynamic and vital Christianity, but into the struggles and concerns of all who seek to be faithful participants in God’s vision of peace in every age. SkyLight Illuminations offers today’s spiritual seeker an enjoyable entry into the great classic texts of the world’s spiritual traditions. Each classic is presented in an accessible translation, with facing pages of guided commentary from experts, offering readers the keys they need to understand the history, context, and meaning of the text. The series enables readers of all backgrounds to experience and understand classic spiritual texts directly, and to make them a part of their lives.

The Book of Knowledge and the Thirteen Principles of Faith— Annotated and Explained Translation and Annotation by Rabbi Marc D. Angel, PhD
The teachings of Judaism’s greatest medieval philosopher can be a companion on your own spiritual journey.

Moses Maimonides (1138–1204) is Jewish history’s greatest exponent of a rational, philosophically based Judaism. He opened his classic code of Jewish Law, the Mishneh Torah, with the “Book of Knowledge,” providing the essential teachings of Jewish faith and ethics. His “Thirteen Principles of Faith,” included in his commentary on the Mishnah, have become cornerstones in Jewish theology. In this book, Rabbi Marc Angel provides a lucid English translation of Maimonides’ key teachings on Jewish faith and ethics, as well as an informative commentary that brings his wisdom to life. Readers will confront Maimonides’ views on the nature of God, providence, prophecy, free will, human nature, repentance—and more. The teachings of Maimonides continue to have profound relevance to those seeking an intellectually vibrant understanding of Judaism. Although deeply rooted in Jewish sources, the writings of Maimonides provide spiritual insights for people of all backgrounds.
Rabbi Marc D. Angel, PhD, is founder and director of the Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals (jewishideas.org). Rabbi emeritus of Congregation Shearith Israel of New York City, he is author and editor of twenty-nine books, including Maimonides, Spinoza and Us: Toward an Intellectually Vibrant Judaism and Foundations of Sephardic Spirituality: The Inner Life of Jews of the Ottoman Empire (both Jewish Lights), both finalists for the National Jewish Book Award.

Bible Study—NEW BOOKS
PROVERBS
Annotated & Explained Translation and Annotation by Rabbi Rami Shapiro
This collection of timeless and practical prescriptions for living honestly and responsibly can be a companion for your own spiritual journey. More than commonplace truisms, the Book of Proverbs is an anthology of teachings designed to help you live with a sense of self-responsibility. Its wisdom, compiled in the seventh century BCE and credited to King Solomon, transcends nationality and politics, addressing instead the individual seeking the true satisfaction and tranquility that comes from living with an honest perception of reality. In this fresh translation of an ancient “how-to,” Rami Shapiro unpacks the proverbs, demonstrating how these complex poetic forms are actually straightforward instructions to live simply, without rationalizations and excuses. He shows how unlike almost anything else in the Hebrew Bible, the truths claimed in the Book of Proverbs are testable and verifiable. They force us to examine our lives and how we are living them without the benefit of psychological sophistry and New Age babble: We are either doing good or doing bad; we are either disciplined or lazy; we are either students of wisdom or puppets of desire. Now you can experience the Book of Proverbs and understand Solomon’s teachings with no previous knowledge of the Hebrew Bible. Islam—PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED
GHAZALI ON THE PRINCIPLES OF ISLAMIC SPIRITUALITY Selections from Forty Foundations of Religion— Annotated & Explained Translation & Annotation by Aaron Spevack, PhD
The first English-language publication of significant portions of the “Forty Foundations” of the Islamic faith, authored by one of the greatest scholars of Islam. Many consider Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058– 1111) the all-time greatest scholar of Islam. One of the great legal minds of his time, he was also one of the foremost sages of theology, philosophy and Sufism. His writings on the interrelation of law, theology and mysticism were central in establishing Sufism as a core dimension of orthodox Islamic practice. Muslim communities all across the world today still base much of their practice of Islam on Ghazali’s writings. Forty Foundations of Religion is Ghazali’s own summary of his magnum opus, The Revival of Religious Knowledge, which he described as the “very essence of the knowledge of the Qur’an.” The Foundations are a brief and powerful summary of Islamic faith, worship, law and spirituality. For all who are interested in Eastern spirituality, Sufism and interfaith dialogue, Foundations offers a concise and affordable alternative to the extensive (and expensive) translations of the original Revival of Religious Knowledge. This is the first publication of significant portions of the Foundations in English. Original translations of selected highlights are accompanied by insightful commentary that makes the core message of this great spiritual master relevant to anyone seeking a balanced understanding of Islam.

PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED—Christianity ST. IGNATIUS LOYOLA—THE SPIRITUAL WRITINGS Selections Annotated & Explained
Annotation by Mark Mossa, SJ
What does Ignatius’s vision to “find God in all things” mean to the challenges and opportunities in contemporary spiritual life?
Religion / Christianity / Theology 51⁄2 x 81⁄2, 224 pp (est), Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-301-7 $16.99 Avail. October 2011 Author’s Home Area: New York City Mark Mossa, SJ, teaches American Catholicism at Fordham University and has also taught at Loyola University in New Orleans. He frequently writes on Ignatian spirituality, contemporary Christianity and ministry with youth and young adults. He is coauthor of Just War, Lasting Peace: What Christian Traditions Can Teach Us and author of Already There: Letting God Find You.
Ignatius saw the Christian mission, and especially that of the Jesuit missionary order which he founded, as a mission to “set fire to the world,” igniting a love for Jesus in the hearts of all. Even today—hundreds of years later—the writings of Ignatius of Loyola, one of the most prolific writers of his time, continue to inspire Christians in their quest for a meaningful, holy life. This fascinating introduction to Ignatian spirituality draws from contemporary translations of original texts focusing on the practical mysticism of Ignatius of Loyola. Excerpts from The Spiritual Exercises, his autobiography, and his collected letters and instructions provide direct insights from Ignatius about the spiritual life in general, and also offer context from Ignatius’s life and times. Substantive, facing-page commentary, presented in a lively and engaging style, illuminates Ignatius’s perspectives on many key aspects of Christian spirituality: • Sin and self-awareness • Humility and obedience • Trust in God • Discernment • Imitating Jesus and the saints • Love and common good • … and more For more about the SkyLight Illuminations series, see p. 8 and pp. 41–46.

FLY FISHING—THE SACRED ART Casting a Fly as a Spiritual Practice Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer and Rev. Michael Attas, MD
Capture the spiritual potential inherent in every cast of the fly rod. We go fly fishing to catch fish, to experience the rush of adrenaline when a trout rises to the surface, grabs the fly, and the line goes taut. But the fly line is more than a way to connect human beings to fish. Each cast of the fly line connects us to nature, to others and to the Divine Presence. In this unique exploration of fly fishing as a spiritual practice, a rabbi and an Episcopal priest illuminate what each step on a fly-fishing trip has to teach us about reflection, awe and wonder of the natural world, the benefits of solitude, the blessing of community and the search for the Divine. Tapping the wisdom in the Christian and Jewish traditions, they outline seven steps of a typical fly-fishing trip and the lessons found within: • The Off-Season and Fly Tying: Anticipation and Preparation • The Drive to the River: Unplugging from the World • Wading into the Stream: Finding Our Place in Nature • Fly Casting: Searching for God at the End of the Line • Setting the Hook: Life and Death on the Stream • The Drive Home: Contemplation and Reflection • “It Was This Big”: Sharing Our Stories For people of all faiths and all levels of fly-fishing experience—or none. Includes “Getting Started,” guiding first-time anglers through the basics of fly rod and fishing gear, casting a fly, places to fly fish, and suggested readings and websites.

Lectio divina is an ancient contemplative practice of listening deeply to the voice of God in sacred texts. Through this prayer practice you become present to each moment in a heart-centered way, and gradually expand your capacity to sense God’s presence until all of life becomes a cascade of prayer. It offers: • A simple, heart-centered practice to connect with the infinite Source of compassion already dwelling within you • A series of contemplative practices to reclaim the lost art of savoring sacred experience, listening deeply for what stirs within you and then resting in the gift of silence • Recommended readings for lectio divina drawn from Christian, Jewish and other wisdom traditions • Ideas for expanding lectio divina beyond scriptural texts to include images, music, nature and life experience • Suggestions for small group and retreat experiences “Draws on a wealth of experience and knowledge…. A DANGEROUS DOZEN
Twelve Christians Who Threatened the Status Quo but Taught Us to Live Like Jesus The Rev. Canon C. K. Robertson, PhD Foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Sometimes what we need most is what we fear most. Meet twelve fascinating—at times, intimidating— Christian change agents who were unafraid to ask what God would have them do in the face of life’s realities— and unafraid to go ahead and do it. Their words and actions challenged the status quo, and in so doing they showed the face of Jesus to the Church and to the world. Whether calling us to live simply in the name of Jesus, showing the way to genuine peacemaking, or exemplifying the true meaning of courage, the legacies of these blessed troublemakers continue to inspire us today … if we let them. Paul of Tarsus • Mary Magdalene • Origen of Alexandria • Francis of Assisi • Hildegard of Bingen • Thomas Cranmer • Sojourner Truth • Dorothy Day • Dietrich Bonhoeffer • Janani Luwum • Oscar Romero • K. Suitable for group or —Publishers Weekly individual study.” “Excellent.… Holds a mirror up to readers, forcing us to recognize the timid compromises we make in order to feel secure and prosperous. The way of Jesus, as Robertson makes clear, is far more challenging—and rewarding!” —Michael Kinnamon, general secretary, National Council of Churches

HOW DID I GET TO BE 70 WHEN I’M 35 INSIDE? Spiritual Surprises of Later Life Linda Douty
Have the courage and curiosity to face the inner changes of aging— and learn how they can help you find meaning in your later years. Unlike other authors, spiritual director Linda Douty discusses the challenges and surprises of aging by talking about how you actually feel, not what you’re supposed to feel. In a warm, down-to-earth voice, she offers a spiritually grounded method to adjust to the unexpected as you grow older. There is no one-sizefits-all here, but a variety of responses to the inner and outer transformations of aging and new ways of looking at them. She looks at surprises, welcome and unwelcome, concerning: • Self-image • The physical body • Relationships • Spiritual life Questions for reflecting on who you are in this period of your life—or who you would like to be—will help you live each day more purposefully and joyfully. “The most engaging, honest, rollicking, helpful book on aging I’ve seen in a long time—quite possibly ever, in —Phyllis Tickle, compiler, The Divine Hours fact.”

THE ANALECTS The Path of the Sage—Selections Annotated & Explained Annotation by Rodney L.Taylor, PhD Translation by James Legge Revised by Rodney L.Taylor, PhD
The wisdom of Confucius, China’s greatest teacher and sage, can guide each of us in our own time. Twenty-six centuries after their origination, the principles laid down in the Analects of Confucius still act as the foundation of Chinese philosophy, ethics, society and government, and play a formative role in the development of many Eastern philosophies. In this intriguing look at the ethical and spiritual meaning of the Analects, Rodney L. Taylor, the foremost American researcher of Confucius as a religious and spiritual figure, explains their profound and universal wisdom for our own time. He shows how Confucius advocates learning and self-cultivation to follow the “path of the sage” or “Way of Heaven”—a journey that promises to promote reason, peace and understanding. Alongside an updated version of the classic translation by Sinologist James Legge, Taylor provides informative and accessible commentary that illuminates the meaning behind selected passages from the Analects and their insights on character development, respect and reverence, and the nature of learning, goodness, truthfulness and righteousness.

CELTIC CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY
Essential Writings—Annotated & Explained Annotation by Mary C. Earle Foreword by John Philip Newell
The forgotten truths of Celtic Christianity provide a portal into a spiritual way of experiencing the world. The Celtic Christians beheld the world around them and perceived the divine life of God as upholding every aspect of the material universe. Their prayers and poems, their liturgies and theological interpretations give Christians a sense of faith that is confident in a merciful and infinitely creative, healing God. In this introduction to Celtic Christian spirituality, Mary Earle presents primary texts from the Celtic Christian tradition—selections from the works of Pelagius, Eriugena and St. Patrick, as well as prayers and poems from Wales, the Outer Hebrides and Ireland. These essential writings direct humanity to read the “book of creation” as well as the Bible, and call us to remember that “matter matters.” Earle’s engaging facing-page commentary explores how faithful Christians and spiritual seekers can take inspiration from this lively tradition’s ways of embodying and living the gospel. Topics include: • Creation • Daily life and work • Incarnation • Pilgrimage • Blessing • Social justice • Prayer “With uncanny grace and deftness … [weaves] the soul-wrenching beauty of Celtic spirituality and the joy of contextual understanding into a seamless and deeply satisfying whole. The result, like the biblical Psalter itself, is a loving companion for all the times and seasons of our lives.” —Phyllis Tickle, compiler, The Divine Hours

Earle, an Episcopal priest, retreat leader and spiritual director, is author of The Desert Mothers: Spiritual Practices from the Women of the Wilderness, and co-author of Holy Companions: Spiritual Practices from the Celtic Saints and Praying with the Celtic Saints. She has offered retreats and classes on the Celtic Christian tradition for over twenty years, in seminary, conference and national settings. She is a frequent contributor to www.explorefaith.org. John Philip Newell—a scholar, teacher and poet— is internationally acclaimed for his work in the field of Celtic spirituality. He is best-selling author of Christ of the Celts and other works, and former warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland.

Across the world’s diverse religious traditions— Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism and more—the call of faith and the call of service often go hand in hand. CHUANG-TZU
The Tao of Perfect Happiness—Selections Annotated & Explained Translation & Annotation by Livia Kohn, PhD
The timeless wisdom of this classic Taoist text can become a companion on your own spiritual journey. The Chuang-tzu is the second major text of the Taoist tradition. It was compiled in the third century BCE and follows the lead of the best-known and oldest of all Taoist texts, the Tao-te-ching (Book of the Tao and Its Potency). Representing the philosophy of its main author, Chuang Chou, along with several other early Taoist strands, the text has inspired spiritual seekers for over two thousand years. Using parable, anecdote, allegory and paradox, the Chuang-tzu presents the central message of what was to become the Taoist school: a reverence for the Tao— the “Way” of the natural world—and the belief that you are not truly virtuous until you are free from the burden of circumstance, personal attachments, tradition and the desire to reform the world. In this special SkyLight Illuminations edition, leading Taoist scholar Livia Kohn, PhD, provides a fresh, modern translation of key selections from this timeless text to open up classic Taoist beliefs and practices. She provides insightful, accessible commentary that highlights the Chuangtzu’s call to reject artificially imposed boundaries and distinctions, and illustrates how you can live a more balanced, authentic and joyful life—at ease in perfect happiness—by following Taoist principles. “[A] lively English translation [and] earthy commentary from one of the world’s most distinguished sinologists and Taoist scholars…. A welcoming introduction for the novice and a subtle revisionist interpretation that will not be lost on scholars.”
