WHY CAN’T WE TALK?

Dialogue as a Habit of the Heart By John Backman

God’s imperatives for us— to practice peacemaking, love others and build community— all begin with authentic dialogue. Think of an issue that makes your blood boil. Now imagine lunch with a friend who is just as passionate about it—on the other side. How can the two of you even broach the issue, let alone hear each other with curiosity and compassion? The answer begins long before the lunch does, by learning to engage dialogue as a habit of the heart—an inner transformation that the ancient practices of Christian spirituality can address. This highly readable and timely guide to restoring dialogue shows Christians of many stripes how to cultivate this transformation while preparing them to approach their adversaries with curiosity, civility and compassion. This book: • Examines the obstacles that keep us from dialogue: black-and-white thinking, our “distraction lifestyle,” the fear of change and others. • Explores the strengths of character from which healthy dialogue springs—and the work of the soul that cultivates them. • Shows how to enhance the work of the soul by engaging the world around us. • Lays out practical guidelines for dialogue and how they work in an imperfect world. • Includes extended anecdotes of dialogue in action, from resolutions of interpersonal conflict to difficult dialogues on some of the most divisive issues of our age. • Uses provocative questions at the end of each chapter to stimulate group discussion and individual reflection.

THE PASSIONATE JESUS

What We Can Learn from Jesus about Love, Fear, Grief, Joy and Living Authentically By The Rev. Peter Wallace

A fresh and moving portrait of Jesus as a model for how to live more authentic, honest and meaningful lives by fully experiencing our emotions in the love of God. Many depictions of Jesus show him as a character who coolly and calmly floats above the grit and grime of human existence. He doesn’t hurt, he doesn’t fear, he doesn’t laugh, and most tragically, he doesn’t love very passionately. He seems not to feel at all. But a closer look at the Bible reveals something surprisingly different. In this eye-opening spiritual study, Peter Wallace examines Jesus’s actions rather than just his teachings to uncover a passionate figure who was involved, present, connected, honest and direct with others. He was one who was “deeply moved,” as the writer of John’s gospel put it—one who knew and embodied the emotions he felt and expressed them in honest, clear and life-giving ways. Through Wallace’s deeply personal insights and compelling stories and examples, you will be encouraged to model this passionate Jesus by building personal authenticity in every area of your own life, particularly in your self-acceptance and self-expression, your relationships with others and, above all, your relationship with God.

NEW IN PAPERBACK—Christianity / Inspiration LIVING

INTO HOPE A Call to Spiritual Action for Such a Time as This By Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell Foreword by Karen Armstrong

Stepping out of ourselves, beyond the walls of the church, and into the thick of humanity to create beloved community. New in Paperback!

Religion / Christianity / Spirituality 6 x 9, 208 pp, Quality PB 978-1-59473-436-6 $16.99 Hardcover, 978-1-59473-283-6 $21.99 Includes Discussion Guide Available September 2012 Author’s Home Area: Cleveland, OH; Chautauqua, NY (Chautauqua Institution)

Drawing on her amazing life experiences, Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell speaks out on the pressing issues that face us today: love, justice, reconciliation, forgiveness and community. With a bold, distinctive voice, this visionary minister asserts that we have the capacity to transcend the barriers that separate us from one another. She poses that “Who is my neighbor?” may be the most crucial question in our world where so many are hungry and hurting and weary of war. She calls us to live life fully— not carefully or cautiously, but wholly engaged with the world and with the messiness of humanity. She dares us to act as the people we are called and created to be—to claim our freedom to care, to risk and to step out into the unknown. Capturing the essence of her wisdom gained from years of world travel and experience, Campbell offers inspiration and challenge for all who would claim their lives as people of hope. “Secures [Campbell’s] status as an American ‘pulpit prince’…. Warm and clear…. Brings fresh insight to gospel parables.” —Publishers Weekly

Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, a sought-after lecturer, is director of religion at the historic Chautauqua Institution, former executive director of the US office of the World Council of Churches and former general secretary of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA. She currently serves as chair of the Global Peace Initiative of Women and is one of the founding members of the Council of Sages for Karen Armstrong’s Charter for Compassion initiative. Karen Armstrong is the best-selling author of The Case for God, among other books. A powerful voice for ecumenical understanding, she was instrumental in creating, launching and propagating the Charter for Compassion.

THE IMITATION

OF CHRIST Selections Annotated & Explained Annotation by Paul Wesley Chilcote, PhD By Thomas à Kempis Adapted from John Wesley’s The Christian’s Pattern

One of the most influential Christian spiritual handbooks—second only to the Bible—can be a companion on your own spiritual journey. Next to the Bible, The Imitation of Christ is the most widely read devotional work within the Christian community. Thought to be compiled by fifteenth-century cleric Thomas à Kempis, this spiritual classic focuses on the interior life, the cultivation of humility, purity of intention and the centrality of the sacramental meal in the life of the Christian disciple. While many English translations of the Imitation have been published over the years, there are few modernizations of the English text available. This SkyLight Illuminations edition is based on John Wesley’s popular abridgment and renders these meditations on the life and teachings of Jesus accessible to the contemporary reader. A substantive introduction and facing-page commentary place the work in its original context; clarify the text’s roots in the Bible, the early Church and medieval mysticism; and explain its influence—spanning five hundred years—on spiritual luminaries from saints to popes and its continuing significance as a timeless spiritual classic.

Praise for Paul Wesley Chilcote’s Work

“Moving…. Well written…. Drawn from several categories of spiritual thought—holiness, the means of grace, conversion, repentance, faith.”

Leadership—NEW BOOKS

LEARNING

TO LEAD Lessons in Leadership for People of Faith Edited by Rev. Willard Ashley, Sr., DMin, DH

The first comprehensive resource for teaching faith leadership development in the twenty-first century. America is changing. Technology, global economics, immigration, migration, social networking and multiculturalism scream for communities of faith to critique and expand our vision of how leaders are prepared to serve in congregations and communities. The comprehensive resource for lay persons and clergy—seminaries, retreats, seminars and congregational leadership development—identifies what we need to know to be effective faith leaders in the twenty-first century and how to teach it. It explains how stakeholders—congregational leaders, ordained religious leaders, educators, students and community leaders—learn how to do theology in context and why contextual education is important. It isolates the unique challenges and opportunities various faith expressions and demographics have in their quest to teach theology. It also mines the latest research on change to see how change impacts leadership style and provides strategies for how faith leaders can educate congregations in our fast-changing world.

Praise for Rev. Willard Ashley’s Work “Draws on a wealth of experience and provides a compendium of realistic scenarios.… A comprehensive resource for clergy, pastoral counselors and caregivers of all faiths.” —Catholic Library World

A book from Jewish Lights, SkyLight Paths’ sister imprint

The next time you pick up a piece of chocolate, consider that you are partaking in an aspect of religious history.

Food & Wine / Chocolate / History 6 x 9, 250 pp (est) Quality PB Original w/ 20+ b/w photographs 978-1-58023-487-0 $18.99 Available September 2012 Author’s Home Area: New York City Rabbi Deborah R. Explore the surprising Jewish and other religious connections to chocolate in this historical and gastronomic adventure through cultures, countries and centuries. Rabbi Deborah Prinz draws from her world travels on the trail of chocolate to enchant chocolate lovers of all backgrounds as she unwraps tales of Jews in the early chocolate trade to how religious values infuse chocolate today. She shows the intersections of Jews, pre-Columbians, Catholics, and Protestants along the chocolate trail and the lasting rituals involving chocolate that the world’s faith traditions still share. Tasty tidbits include: • Chocolate making in seventeenth-century Amsterdam, home to the largest and wealthiest Jewish community of its time, was known as a special Jewish industry. • Bayonne chocolate makers today advertise that Jews brought chocolate making to France. • The Bishop of Chiapas Mexico was poisoned because he prohibited local women from drinking chocolate during Mass. • Cistercian monks in Poblet, Spain, designated a special chocolate room. • Inquisition jails in New Spain allowed the drinking of chocolate by prisoners. • A born-again Christian businessman in the Midwest markets his caramel chocolate bar as a “Noshy,” after the Yiddish word for “snack.”

RECENTLY PUBLISHED—Christianity GATHERING

AT GOD’S TABLE The Meaning of Mission in the Feast of Faith By Katharine Jefferts Schori

A profound reminder of our role in God’s vision for a restored and reconciled world. In the Christian tradition, believers are called to do more than sit around and pray. Throughout the Gospel—and throughout history—people of faith have been quite literally booted out into the world to bring God’s love to everybody, not just a select few. That’s the meaning of mission—from the Latin verb mitto, meaning, “to send.” It is the work that Jesus and his disciples set out to do—feeding, healing and teaching. In an insightful and powerful voice, Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church, explores the meaning of mission in the context of contemporary life, reminding us of the Anglican Communion’s Five Marks of Mission: • Proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom • Teach, Baptize and Nurture New Believers • Respond to Human Need with Loving Service • Seek to Transform Unjust Structures of Society • Strive to Safeguard the Integrity of Creation, and Sustain and Renew the Life of the Earth

Christianity / Spirituality 6 x 9, 256 pp, Hardcover 978-1-59473-316-1 $21.99 Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori is the presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church. She became the Anglican Communion’s first female primate in 2006. She is the author of The Heartbeat of God: Finding the Sacred in the Middle of Everything; A Wing and a Prayer; and The Gospel in the Global Village.

“A gift to our worldwide Communion, indeed to the whole church. These gems sparkle with insight and challenge…. A classic for renewal in the church’s commitment as servant to God’s mission.” —Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate, the Anglican Church of Canada

ALL POLITICS IS RELIGIOUS

Speaking Faith to the Media, Policy Makers and Community By Rabbi Dennis S. Ross Foreword by Rev. Barry W. Lynn

Faith grows when we uphold its vision for a better world and speak of it in the public square— while keeping church and state separate. A practical and empowering resource. It provides ideas and strategies for expressing a clear, forceful and progressive religious point of view that is all too often overlooked and under represented in public discourse. It identifies the religious themes in today’s great debates—gay rights, the needs of children and families, church-state separation and reproductive rights, including access to sex education, contraception and abortion care—and presents new language and methods for effective communication with the media, policy makers and community. It steers away from the polemics and jargon of politics—left, right, liberal, conservative, socialist—and instead relies on factual historical examples, current events and personal stories to illustrate the best ways to communicate the positive role faith can play in personal and public life by reinforcing the separation of church and state. “An incomparable guide for embracing faith as a platform for supporting the social justice issues of our time—from health care and reproductive rights to marriage equality and sex education.” —Cecile Richards, president, Planned Parenthood Federation of America

“An encouragement to all who are searching for a richer and more meaningful way to engage in our democracy, and a much-needed corrective for these bitterly partisan times.” —Nancy Northup, president and CEO, Center for Reproductive Rights

RECENTLY PUBLISHED—Bible THE BOOK

OF JOB Annotated & Explained Translation and Annotation by Donald Kraus Foreword by Dr. Marc Brettler

An inviting guide to a classic that challenges God’s justice.

Religion / Biblical Studies 5½ x 8½, 220 pp (est) Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-389-5 $16.99 Annotator’s Home Area: Boston Donald Kraus, executive editor for Bibles at Oxford University Press, has produced such highprofile projects as The Catholic Study Bible, The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha, The Jewish Study Bible and The Jewish Annotated New Testament. Dr. Marc Brettler is the Dora Golding Professor of Biblical Studies and former chair of the department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University.

The Book of Job, celebrated as a classic of world literature and one of the glories of the Bible, can often be puzzling and frustrating: puzzling for its dialogue form and off-putting because in places it doesn’t seem to make sense. The book was written in a world very different from ours, and yet the fundamental questions are very much our own: Is it worthwhile to act for the best? Does life have a meaning beyond itself? Are there any answers to our questions? Donald Kraus, the longtime editor of Oxford Study Bibles, clarifies for today’s readers what Job is, how to overcome difficulties in the text, and what it may mean for us. Kraus’s fresh translation captures some of the finest poetry in the Hebrew Bible as well as recovers some of the original author’s intent. His probing commentary explores Job’s daring challenges to God’s goodness, questions about the basic fairness of existence and compelling descriptions of the glories of the created world and the bitter sorrows of human life. Kraus identifies and clarifies problem areas in the text, invites us to enter into Job’s dialogue and stimulates thoughtful consideration of life’s intractable questions. About SkyLight Illuminations SkyLight Illuminations offers today’s spiritual seeker an enjoyable entry into the great classic texts of the world’s spiritual traditions. Each classic is presented in an accessible translation, with facing pages of guided commentary from experts, offering readers the keys they need to understand the history, context and meaning of the text. The series enables readers of all backgrounds to experience and understand classic spiritual texts directly, and to make them a part of their lives.

DESERT FATHERS

AND MOTHERS Early Christian Wisdom Sayings—Annotated & Explained Annotation by Christine Valters Paintner, PhD

Wisdom from the very beginnings of Christian monasticism can become a companion on your own spiritual journey. The desert fathers and mothers were ordinary Christians living in solitude in the deserts of Egypt, Palestine and Syria who chose to renounce the world in order to deliberately and individually follow God’s call. They embraced lives of celibacy, labor, fasting, prayer and poverty, believing that denouncing material goods and practicing stoic self-discipline would lead to unity with the Divine. Their spiritual practice formed the basis of Western monasticism and greatly influenced both Western and Eastern Christianity. Their writings, first recorded in the fourth century, consist of spiritual advice, parables and anecdotes emphasizing the primacy of love and the purity of heart. Focusing on key themes of charity, fortitude, lust, patience, prayer, self-control and visions, the Sayings influenced the rule of St. Benedict and have inspired centuries of opera, poetry and art. Christine Valters Paintner, PhD, provides insightful yet unobtrusive commentary that describes historical background, explains the practice of asceticism and clarifies the ancient desert wisdom that will speak to your life today and energize your spiritual quest.

Annotation by Mark Mossa, SJ

This sixteenth-century mystic, whose mission was to ignite a love of Jesus in the hearts of all, can be a companion for your own spiritual journey.

Religion / Christianity / Theology 5½ x 8½, 288 pp, Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-301-7 $18.99 Mark Mossa, SJ, teaches American Catholicism at Fordham University and has also taught at Loyola University in New Orleans. He frequently writes on Ignatian spirituality, contemporary Christianity and ministry with youth and young adults. He is coauthor of Just War, Lasting Peace: What Christian Traditions Can Teach Us and author of Already There: Letting God Find You.

Ignatius of Loyola, sixteenth-century mystic, spiritual director and founder of the Society of Jesus, is considered to be among the greatest educators in the history of western civilization. Even today, his writings continue to inspire Christians in their quest for a meaningful holy life. The Spiritual Exercises alone—Ignatius’s most well-known work—has guided the retreat experience of over a million Christians over nearly five centuries. This fascinating introduction to Ignatian spirituality draws from contemporary translations of original texts focusing on the practical mysticism of Ignatius of Loyola. Excerpts from The Spiritual Exercises, his autobiography and his collected letters and instructions provide direct insights from Ignatius about the role of humility, obedience, discernment, sin and self-awareness in spiritual life. Substantive facing-page commentary illuminates Ignatius’s perspectives on many key aspects of Christian spirituality. “Illuminates the work of this spiritual master in an engaging and accessible fashion. If you are new to Ignatius, read this first. If you are a student of his work, read it for fresh perspective.” —The Rev. Dr. Frederick W. Schmidt, director of spiritual formation and Anglican studies, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University; author, What God Wants for Your Life

Edited and with Introductions by Lynn L. Caruso

Journey through the seasons of motherhood and connect with the birth, growth, change, joy, love and inner strength of mothering. Take a spiritual voyage through blessings, prayers, anecdotes and meditations about the sacred undertaking that is motherhood. These words of hope and healing, pain and promise, are for all mothers— traditional, single, adoptive, foster, step and bereaved—and are drawn from many faith traditions, including Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Native American. Special multifaith ceremonies offer ways to honor many aspects of motherhood, such as: becoming a new mother, either through birth or adoption; welcoming children into the larger community; and acknowledging the experience of weaning a child. Insightful and wise, the expressions in this soulful collection illustrate the paradox of motherhood and will speak to your heart as you see motherhood in a whole new—and holy—way. FLY-FISHING—THE SACRED ART Casting a Fly as a Spiritual Practice

By Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer and Rev. Michael Attas, MD Foreword by Chris Wood; Preface by Lori Simon

Discover the spiritual potential hidden in every cast of the fly rod. In this unique exploration of fly-fishing as a spiritual practice, an Episcopal priest and a rabbi share what fly-fishing has to teach us about reflection, awe and the wonder of the natural world, the benefits of solitude, the blessing of community and the search for the Divine. Tapping the wisdom in the Christian and Jewish traditions and their own geographically diverse experiences on the water, they show how time spent on the stream can help you navigate the currents and eddies of your own inner journey. With charm, wit and passion, they delve into the significance of: • Escaping the Everyday • Fly-Casting & Finding Your Place in Nature • Mindfulness During & After Your Trip • Fly-Fishing Community & Sharing Common Ground Sports / Fishing / Spirituality • Insightful Surprises in Unfamiliar Terrain 5½ x 8½, 160 pp, Quality PB Original • Expanding & Expressing Your Creativity 978-1-59473-299-7 $16.99 through Fly-Tying Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer is creator of The Fly Fishing Rabbi: A • Tapping Your Inner Steward & Blog about Trout, God and Religion, and is the spiritual leader of Giving Back to the Stream “Offers beautiful and original perspectives on a pastime that for many is a kind of religion. RECENTLY PUBLISHED—Science & Religion OUR RELIGIOUS BRAINS

What Cognitive Science Reveals about Belief, Morality, Community and Our Relationship with God By Ralph D. Mecklenburger Foreword by Dr. Howard Kelfer Preface by Dr. Neil Gillman

A Revolution in Human Self-Understanding Is Underway— What Does It Mean for Religion and Our Belief in God?

Religion / Religion & Science 6 x 9, 224 pp, Hardcover 978-1-58023-508-2 $24.99

This is a groundbreaking, accessible look at the implications of cognitive science for religion and theology, intended for laypeople. Avoiding neurological jargon and respectful to all faiths, it examines: • Current theory on how our brains construct our world in order to guide us safely through life, creating and appreciating meaning as we go. • What religious experience is as it plays out in our brains. • How modern science challenges historic ideas about free will and undermines the religious concept of the soul as a meta-physical entity separable from the body. • What cognitive science reveals about our need for community. • Why we should be loyal to one faith if, in fact, all major religious traditions deal effectively with universal human needs.

“Fascinating…. Should appeal to the church growth leader or anyone who is interested in the relationship between cognition, theology and religious community.” —Publishers Weekly Ralph D. Mecklenburger speaks nationally on topics related to Religion, Science and Jewish-Christian dialogue. An adjunct faculty member at Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University, he is rabbi at Beth-El Congregation in Fort Worth, Texas and has served as the Jewish co-chair of the Texas Conference of Churches’ Jewish-Christian Forum. Dr. Howard Kelfer is a neurologist and former director of neurology at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. He maintains an active practice in critical care neurology and an interest in cognitive neuroscience. Dr. Neil Gillman, emeritus professor of Jewish philosophy at The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, is a rabbi and author of many award-winning books that help us understand our relationship with God.
