Who Are We?
What Are We Doing?
SkyLight Paths Publishing is creating a place where people of different spiritual traditions come together for challenge and inspiration, a place where we can help each other understand the mystery that lies at the heart of our existence. Through spirituality, our religious beliefs are increasingly becoming a part of our lives— rather than apart from our lives. While many of us may be more interested than ever in spiritual growth, we may be less firmly planted in traditional religion. Yet, we do want to deepen our relationship to the sacred, to learn from our own as well as from other faith traditions and to practice in new ways. SkyLight Paths sees both believers and seekers as a community that increasingly transcends traditional boundaries of religion and denomination—people wanting to learn from each other, walking together, finding the way.
SkyLight Paths recognizes that believers and seekers of different faith traditions, or no specific tradition, want to listen to and learn from each other as never before. We want to help them. This does not mean that our readers leave their own religious traditions behind. It does mean that they are open to one faith enriching another. SkyLight Paths will help believers deepen their faith and help seekers in their search. We will succeed only if our books make a difference in your life. We are all walking together, finding the way.

Christianity—NEW BOOKS
A DANGEROUS DOZEN
Twelve Christians Who Threatened the Status Quo but Taught Us to Live Like Jesus The Rev. Canon C. K. Robertson, PhD Foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Sometimes what we need most is what we fear most, and it takes visionaries with courage to lead the way. Change is never easy, and it is most threatening to those in institutional power, whether in society or the Church. Yet there are times when transformation is sorely needed, and it usually takes “troublemakers” to help bring it about. This book explores twelve of these fascinating—at times, intimidating—men and women. These Christian change agents were not afraid to challenge structures that would divide and repress, showing the world a different way of living. Throughout history, others have sought to canonize and control these individuals, but their faith, their vision, their courage continues to inspire us today … if we let them. Each profile includes a glimpse into the person’s life and lasting legacy, historical reactions to each person’s extraordinary actions, questions for reflection, and suggestions for further study. Profiles include: The Apostle Paul Archbishop Oscar Romero Mary Magdalene Dorothy Day Francis of Assisi … and more Thomas Cranmer

Whether we wander far from home or reminisce from our favorite armchair, people of all faiths or none whatsoever undertake journeys to remember and restore the missing pieces of our stories, psyches and souls. • In what ways are reunions—from a single memory to Facebook—mirrors that help us to live and explore questions about our true selves?

• What might our feelings, beliefs and practices concerning real and imagined reunions say about our longings, belongings, attachments, unfinished business, hopes, expectations, fears and puzzling past in our efforts to be the authors of our lives? • What can recent neuroscientific and psychological discoveries about the mind, the brain and our unconscious behaviors and motivations tell us about our yearnings to recover life’s missing pieces for the sake of re-union within? • What does the holy Spirit of Re-Union want us to know when it awakens, heightens and guides our longings to forge deeper connections and re-connections with ourselves and the Divine?

Personal Growth—NEW BOOKS
HOW DID I GET TO BE 70 WHEN I’M 35 INSIDE? Spiritual Surprises of Later Life Linda Douty
It’s never too late to let your younger self grow up—a candid look at inner changes as you age. Our culture is experiencing an exploding population of seniors who are living longer and better. They’re getting plenty of how-to advice about battling the aging process—eat like a bird, exercise like an athlete, nip and tuck like a starlet, stay busy and don’t stop. This book is different; it says stop! Slow down to reflect on the desire for meaning that is a natural part of later life. Have the courage and curiosity to focus on the inner changes in the aging process that fuel the outer experience so that you can make wise choices about how you want to live this part of life. Based on dozens of interviews in this age demographic, this engaging guide to later life provides information, inspiration and humor shared by thoughtful elders to help you greet these years as the grand adventure they can be. Contributors speak honestly about the challenges of coping with losses, as well as the delight of becoming comfortable in one’s own skin. From dealing with “body betrayal” to clarifying what really matters, they explore transformative questions that can help you acknowledge and appreciate a deepening spirituality that comes in your advancing years: • What has surprised you most about getting older? • What have you discovered about yourself that you didn’t already know? • How has your faith journey affected the process? • How have your beliefs in God and the afterlife changed?

NEW BOOKS—Christianity ST. IGNATIUS LOYOLA—THE SPIRITUAL WRITINGS Selections Annotated & Explained
Annotation by Mark Mossa, SJ
What does Ignatius’s vision to “find God in all things” mean to the challenges and opportunities in contemporary spiritual life?
Religion / Christianity / Theology 51⁄2 x 81⁄2, 224 pp (est), Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-301-7 $16.99 Avail. February 2011 Author’s Home Area: New York City Mark Mossa, SJ, teaches American Catholicism at Fordham University and has also taught at Loyola University in New Orleans. He frequently writes on Ignatian spirituality, contemporary Christianity and ministry with youth and young adults. He is coauthor of Just War, Lasting Peace: What Christian Traditions Can Teach Us and author of Already There: Letting God Find You.
Ignatius saw the Christian mission, and especially that of the Jesuit missionary order which he founded, as being to “set fire to the world,” igniting a love for Jesus in the hearts of all. Even today—hundreds of years later—the writings of Ignatius of Loyola, one of the most prolific writers of his time, continue to inspire Christians in their quest for a meaningful, holy life. This fascinating introduction to Ignatian spirituality draws from contemporary translations of original texts focusing on the practical mysticism of Ignatius of Loyola. Excerpts from The Spiritual Exercises, his autobiography, and his collected letters and instructions provide direct insights from Ignatius about the spiritual life in general, and also offer context from Ignatius’s life and times. Substantive, facing-page commentary, presented in a lively and engaging style, illuminates Ignatius’s perspectives on many key aspects of Christian spirituality: • Sin and self-awareness • Humility and obedience • Trust in God • Discernment • Imitating Jesus and the saints • Love and common good • … and more For more about the SkyLight Illuminations series, see p. 6.

Christianity—NEW BOOKS
CELTIC CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY
Essential Writings—Annotated & Explained Annotation by Mary C. Earle Foreword by John Philip Newell
The mysterious and deep reverence for God of the Celtic Christians can become a companion for your own spiritual journey. The Celtic Christians beheld the world around them and perceived the divine life of God upholding every aspect of the material universe. Their prayers and poems, their liturgies and their theological texts give Christians a sense of faith that is confident in a merciful and infinitely creative, healing God. In this introduction to Celtic Christian spirituality, Mary C. Earle presents the primary texts from the Celtic Christian tradition—selections from the writings of Pelagius, Eriugena and St. Patrick, as well as prayers and poems from Wales, the Outer Hebrides and Ireland. These essential texts direct humanity to read the “book of creation” as well as the book of scripture, and call us to remember that “matter matters.” Earle’s engaging facing-page commentary explores how faithful Christians and spiritual seekers use the writings of this lively tradition as ways of embodying and living the gospel. Topics include: • Creation • Daily life and work • Incarnation • Pilgrimage • Praise • Social justice • Prayer

John Philip Newell—a scholar, teacher and poet—is internationally acclaimed for his work in the field of Celtic spirituality. He is best-selling author of Christ of the Celts and other works, and former warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland.

Eastern Religions—NEW BOOKS
CONFUCIUS,
THE ANALECTS The Path of the Sage—Selections Annotated & Explained Annotation by Rodney L.Taylor, PhD Translation by James Legge Revised by Rodney L.Taylor, PhD
The wisdom of Confucius, China’s greatest teacher and sage, can become relevant to each of us in our own time. Twenty-six centuries after their origination, the principles laid down in the Analects of Confucius still act as the foundation of Chinese philosophy, ethics, society and government, and play a formative role in the development of many Eastern philosophies. Confucius is revered as China’s greatest teacher and sage, and interest in his monumental teachings continues today. In this intriguing look at the ethical and spiritual meaning of the Analects, Rodney L. Taylor, the foremost American researcher of Confucius as a religious and spiritual figure, explains why the Analects hold enduring and universal wisdom for our time. He shows how Confucius advocates learning and self-cultivation to follow “the path of the sage” or “way of Heaven”— a path that promises to promote reason, peace and understanding. Along with an updated version of the classic translation by sinologist James Legge, Taylor provides informative and accessible commentary that: • Illuminates the meaning behind selected passages from the Analects as they relate to Chinese philosophy, ethical thought and religion/spirituality • Explains common interpretations of the text and how they contribute to our current understanding of Chinese and Eastern philosophy, ethics and morality • … and much more

NEW BOOKS—Eastern Religions CHUANG-TZU
The Tao of Perfect Happiness—Selections Annotated & Explained Translation & Annotation by Livia Kohn, PhD
The timeless wisdom of this foundational Taoist text can become a companion for your own spiritual journey.
Religion / Taoism 51⁄2 x 81⁄2, 240 pp, Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-296-6 $16.99 Avail. March 2011 Translator’s/Annotator’s Home Area: Florida
The Chuang-tzu is the second major text of the Taoist tradition. It was compiled in the third century BCE and follows in the footsteps of the best known and oldest of all Taoist texts, the Tao-te-ching (Book of the Tao and Its Power). Representing the philosophy of its main author, Chuang Chou, along with several other early Taoist strands, the text has been a literary delight and a spiritual inspiration to spiritual seekers for over two thousand years. Using parable, anecdote, allegory and paradox, the Chuang-tzu presents the central message of what was to become the Taoist school: a reverence for the Tao— the “Way” of the natural world—and the belief that you are not truly virtuous until you are free from the burden of circumstance, personal attachments, tradition and the desire to reform the world. In this special SkyLight Illuminations edition, leading Taoist scholar Livia Kohn draws on key selections from this timeless text to elucidate foundational Taoist beliefs and practices. She provides insightful, accessible commentary that highlights the Chuang-tzu’s call to reject artificially imposed boundaries and distinctions, and illustrates how you can live a more balanced, authentic and joyful life—at ease in perfect happiness—by following Taoist principles.
Livia Kohn, PhD, a leading Taoist scholar, is professor emerita of religion and East Asian studies at Boston University. She is author or editor of over twenty-five books and many articles on Taoism and East Asian religions, including Daoism and Chinese Culture, Daoism Handbook, and Health and Long Life: The Chinese Way. She teaches workshops all over the world, spearheads international conferences on Taoist studies and is executive editor at Three Pines Press and the Journal of Daoist Studies.

Prayer—NEW BOOKS
LECTIO DIVINA—THE SACRED ART
Transforming Words & Images into Heart-Centered Prayer Christine Valters Paintner, PhD
Expanding the ancient practice of sacred reading beyond scriptural texts to include visual art, music, nature and your own sacred stories. Lectio divina, which means sacred reading, is an ancient contemplative practice of listening deeply to the voice of God in sacred texts. In recent years there has been a reclaiming of the riches of contemplative prayer forms of Western traditions. Through the practice of lectio divina you become present to each moment in a heart-centered way. Gradually, the practice of lectio expands your capacity to sense God’s presence until all of life becomes a cascade of prayer. Drawing on her own experience as a monk in the world, Christine Valters Paintner breaks open the movements of this spiritual practice. She makes them accessible to the contemporary reader who longs for a more pervasive experience of the holy in the everyday but lives far away from the sanctuary of a monastery. She includes simple, engaging and meaningful prayer experiences that include: • A simple, heart-centered practice to connect with the infinite Source of compassion already dwelling within you for those times when you long to cultivate more kindness toward yourself • A series of contemplative practices to reclaim the lost art of savoring, to listen to what is stirring deeply within your heart and to receive the gifts of silence • Expanding lectio divina beyond scriptural texts to include visual art, music, nature and life experience • Suggestions for group experiences and times of retreat

FLY FISHING—THE SACRED ART Casting a Fly as a Spiritual Practice Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer and Rev. Michael Attas, MD
Capture the spiritual potential inherent in every cast of the fly rod. We go fly fishing to catch fish, to experience the rush of adrenaline when a trout rises to the surface, grabs the fly, and the line goes taut. But the fly line is more than a way to connect human beings to fish. Each cast of the fly line connects us to nature, to others and to the Divine Presence. In this unique exploration of fly fishing as a spiritual practice, a rabbi and an Episcopal priest illuminate what each step on a fly-fishing trip has to teach us about reflection, awe and wonder of the natural world, the benefits of solitude, the blessing of community and the search for the Divine. Tapping the wisdom in the Christian and Jewish traditions, they outline seven steps of a typical fly-fishing trip and the lessons found within: • The Off-Season and Fly Tying: Anticipation and Preparation • The Drive to the River: Unplugging from the World • Wading into the Stream: Finding Our Place in Nature • Fly Casting: Searching for God at the End of the Line • Setting the Hook: Life and Death on the Stream • The Drive Home: Contemplation and Reflection • “It Was This Big”: Sharing Our Stories For people of all faiths and all levels of fly-fishing experience—or none. Includes “Getting Started,” guiding first-time anglers through the basics of fly rod and fishing gear, casting a fly, places to fly fish, and suggested readings and websites.

Personal Growth—NEW IN PAPERBACK
THE LOSSES
OF OUR LIVES The Sacred Gifts of Renewal in Everyday Loss Dr. Nancy Copeland-Payton
Find hope and renewal in life’s natural cycle of ordinary losses and new beginnings. Going beyond loss as a problem to be resolved, a grief to be worked through, Dr. Nancy Copeland-Payton, a spiritual director and ordained clergywoman, reframes loss from the perspective that our everyday losses help us learn what we need to handle the major losses. Weaving in spiritual and classical themes, personal and scriptural story, Dr. Copeland-Payton shows us that by becoming aware of what our lesser losses have to teach us, the larger losses of our lives become less terrifying. Each chapter includes a spiritual practice and questions for reflection to help you: • Mine the hidden depths of painful losses of things and places • Traverse the devastating loss of relationships and the heart-wrenching death of people we love • Overcome the steep, dark slopes of loss of beliefs and faith • Venture past our fear of the losses of aging and our own death “Capture[s] beautifully the paradox that the losses of our lives can become our gains. By weaving story, experience and faith … shows how our deepest hurts may be the soil that nurtures the seeds of our transformation.” —Sr. Clarissa Goeckner, prioress, Monastery of St. Gertrude, Cottonwood, Idaho

Islam—PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED
GHAZALI ON THE PRINCIPLES OF ISLAMIC SPIRITUALITY Selections from Forty Foundations of Religion— Annotated & Explained Translation & Annotation by Aaron Spevack, PhD
The first English-language publication of significant portions of the “Forty Foundations” of the Islamic faith, authored by one of the greatest scholars of Islam. Many consider Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058– 1111) the all-time greatest scholar of Islam. One of the great legal minds of his time, he was also one of the foremost sages of theology, philosophy and Sufism. His writings on the interrelation of law, theology and mysticism were central in establishing Sufism as a core dimension of orthodox Islamic practice. Muslim communities all across the world today still base much of their practice of Islam on Ghazali’s writings. Forty Foundations of Religion is Ghazali’s own summary of his magnum opus, The Revival of Religious Knowledge, which he described as the “very essence of the knowledge of the Qur’an.” The Foundations are a brief and powerful summary of Islamic faith, worship, law and spirituality. For all who are interested in Eastern spirituality, Sufism and interfaith dialogue, Foundations offers a concise and affordable alternative to the extensive (and expensive) translations of the original Revival of Religious Knowledge. This is the first publication of significant portions of the Foundations in English. Original translations of selected highlights are accompanied by insightful commentary that makes the core message of this great spiritual master relevant to anyone seeking a balanced understanding of Islam.

DECISION MAKING & SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT The Sacred Art of Finding Your Way Nancy L. Bieber Spiritual discernment is the traditional name for listening and responding to divine guidance. While religious language speaks of following “God’s will,” this book approaches decision making with the understanding that we play a vital role in shaping our lives. Finding the Sacred in the Middle of Everything Katharine Jefferts Schori Foreword by Joan Chittister, OSB Explore our connections—as human beings with each other, as one nation with all other nations, as the human species with the whole of our environment—through the lens of faith. Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church, examines these connections as she looks at the intersections of faith with the major issues of our day. “With [an] elegant, light touch, shows how an authentic Christianity demands a concern for, and an involvement with, thoroughly mundane issues such as ending poverty and hunger, providing health care, and dealing with climate change, gender equality, and crime. In Bishop Katharine’s version of reality, —Archbishop Desmond Tutu everything is sacred except sin.” Katharine Jefferts Schori is the presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church. She became the Anglican Communion’s first female primate in 2006. She is the author of A Wing and a Prayer: A Message of Faith and Hope and The Gospel in the Global Village: Seeking God’s Dream of Shalom. Joan Chittister, OSB, is an international lecturer and award-winning author of more than thirty-five books.

CHRISTIANS & JEWS—FAITH
TO FAITH Tragic History, Promising Present, Fragile Future Rabbi James Rudin
We now have the potential to overcome 2,000 years of hostility—but will we succeed? In recent years, courageous Christian and Jewish leaders have together confronted the past and commenced the urgent task of ending one of the world’s longest and most bitter religious conflicts by building bridges of solidarity, mutual knowledge and respect. But creating this new and constructive relationship has not been easy. How did it happen? How was it possible to begin the process of overcoming centuries of stereotypes, caricatures and prejudice? And does the development of constructive Christian-Jewish relations, while still fragile, offer a successful model to resolve other conflicts? This probing examination of Christian-Jewish relations looks at the major issues facing both faith communities to guarantee that recent hard-earned achievements will not be lost in the tumultuous years ahead. “Does not dodge any of the painful issues…. [A] rewarding, always stimulating book.” —Peter Steinfels, co-director, Fordham University Center on Religion and Culture; former New York Times religion correspondent and columnist
“Offers us all a Jewish ‘take’ on our times, allowing us to see and hear the news with the eyes and ears of Jews. Here also is a clear-eyed understanding for both Christians and Jews of the evils of establishment, religion and state coupled together, predicated upon replacing suspicion with respect and apathy with empathy. Urgently needed!” —The Rev. Dr. James M. Dunn, professor of Christianity and public policy, Divinity School at Wake Forest University

RECENTLY PUBLISHED—Bible ECCLESIASTES Annotated & Explained Translation & Annotation by Rabbi Rami Shapiro Foreword by Rev. Barbara Cawthorne Crafton
A timeless teaching on living well in the midst of uncertainty and insecurity, with facing-page commentary that brings the text to life.
Religion / Judaism / Christianity 51⁄2 x 81⁄2, 160 pp, Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-287-4 $16.99 Rabbi Rami Shapiro is an award-winning author, storyteller and essayist. He is author of The Sacred Art of Lovingkindness: Preparing to Practice; The Divine Feminine in Biblical Wisdom Literature: Selections Annotated & Explained; and Hasidic Tales: Annotated & Explained (all SkyLight Paths), among other books. Rev. Barbara Cawthorne Crafton is an Episcopal priest and the author of many books.
“Rami Shapiro’s contemporary and pungently poetic recreations of ancient biblical classics have inspired and instructed me for years. His Ecclesiastes is his most revelatory work yet.”
Twenty-three hundred years ago, an unnamed Hebrew sage known only as Koheleth, the Assembler of Wisdom, rocked the ancient Jewish world with a critique of society that shattered conventional notions of God, piety, politics and power. Koheleth lived in a world of change and challenge not unlike our own. His teachings, known as the Book of Ecclesiastes, sought to empower people not unlike ourselves, which is why this book of the Hebrew Bible still speaks to us—people of all faiths—today. In this contemporary and accurate translation, Rami Shapiro presents the Book of Ecclesiastes as neither revelation nor prophecy but as a rational and inspirational guide to living well in the midst of uncertainty. Beginning with its opening broadside, “Havel havalim!”—not “futility” or “vanity” as most translations would have it, but “breath,” “vapor” and “impermanence”—Shapiro opens up Koheleth’s approach to living in a world where nothing lasts and justice is illusory; a world devoted to accumulating power, wealth, pleasure, and even knowledge that leaves you drowning in anxiety and needless suffering. He shows how Koheleth’s God demands neither sacrifice nor adherence to commandments, offering instead a practical lifestyle rooted in moderation, meaningful work and friendship. “Rescue[s] this great spiritual realist from official neglect and distortion. With zest and good humor … shows us a courageous biblical personality who confronted the problem of life with wisdom from life.” —Ray Waddle, OFM, editor, Reflections journal; author, Against the Grain: Unconventional Wisdom from Ecclesiastes
