Spirituality—New Books
Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent
Sacred Teachings—Annotated & Explained Annotation by Rami Shapiro
Spiritual wisdom for the millions of Americans who are moving away from traditional houses of worship in their quest for God. The fastest growing spiritual movement in the United States today is that of the religiously unaffiliated. These spiritual seekers make up 20 percent of the adult American population; they are the spiritual equivalent of political independents. Refusing to limit themselves to one religion or another, these seekers without borders are open to wisdom wherever it can be found. Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent is a “bible” for this vast and growing social movement. It weaves sacred texts and teachings from the world’s major religions into a coherent exploration of the five core questions at the heart of every religion’s search: Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going? How shall I live? Why? It couples these sacred teachings with modern commentary designed to help readers use these texts in their daily lives, making Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent a primer for twentyfirst-century spiritual life.

Christianity / Prayer—New Books
The Book
of Common Prayer A Spiritual Treasure Chest—Selections Annotated & Explained Annotation by The Rev. Canon C. K. Robertson, PhD Foreword by The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori Preface by Archbishop Desmond Tutu
From a bountiful sacred heritage come gifts of wisdom, peace and hope for your spiritual wholeness and growth. For centuries, Christians of different traditions and seekers from various backgrounds have found strength for their spiritual journey in The Book of Common Prayer (BCP). First composed in 1549 by Thomas Cranmer, Henry VIII’s Archbishop of Canterbury, the BCP, alongside Shakespeare’s works and the King James Bible, helped shape the English language. Today over seventy-five million Anglican Christians throughout the world use the BCP in public worship, and countless people— Anglican and otherwise—use it in their private devotional life. In this unique presentation of selections— organized by themes such as “Belonging in God’s Family,” “Blessing in Times of Joy and Pain” and “Learning from Our Past”—with facing-page commentary, C. K. Robertson offers fascinating insights into the history and heritage of the BCP. He also makes available the riches of this spiritual treasure chest for all who are interested in deepening their life of prayer, building stronger relationships and making a difference in their world.

New Books—Christianity / Women’s Interest Hildegard
of Bingen Essential Writings and Chants of a Christian Mystic— Annotated & Explained Annotation by Dr. Sheryl A. Kujawa-Holbrook
“The fiery life of divine wisdom” captured in the writings of this twelfthcentury Christian mystic, visionary and healer can be a companion on your own spiritual journey.
Religion / Christian Life / Women’s Issues 5½ x 8½, 200 pp (est) Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-514-1 $16.99 Available October 2013 Annotator’s Home Area: Los Angeles Dr. Sheryl A. Kujawa-Holbrook, an Episcopal priest, is a popular teacher, speaker and retreat leader on topics related to Christian spirituality, mysticism, social activism and interreligious encounter. A professor of practical theology at Claremont School of Theology, Claremont Lincoln University, and professor of Anglican studies at Bloy House, the Episcopal Theological School at Claremont, she is author of Pilgrimage—The Sacred Art: Journey to the Center of the Heart, among other books.
Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179) was a Christian mystic, visionary, abbess, composer, dramatist, poet and healer. The brilliance and passion of her writings—including inscriptions of her visions, letters, liturgical antiphons, hymns, a morality play and medical and scientific works—speak to readers within the church as well as those who are not formally religious but have an interest in mysticism, the spiritual life, the relationship between spirituality and creativity, feminist and eco-spiritualities and the arts. Though considered a controversial figure in her day, she was recently canonized and proclaimed a doctor of the church, an honor extended to only three other women saints in Christian history. This groundbreaking introduction to her rich and varied writings presents a wide range of Hildegard’s works grouped by theme, providing a deeper understanding of this influential spiritual figure than single-themed collections can. Insightful and instructive annotations provide the reader with suggestions for how to read or “listen” to medieval mystical texts as well as how to engage fully with Latin chants, allowing readers to effectually begin a dialogue between the world of this twelfth-century mystic and our own.

Christianity—New Books
Julian
of Norwich Selections from Revelations of Divine Love— Annotated & Explained Annotation by Mary C. Earle
Practical wisdom for living and insight for praying, using rich imagery from the visions of a fourteenth-century English mystic. Many people are familiar with the phrase “All shall be well” but do not know much, if anything, about Julian of Norwich, the fourteenth-century English mystic who wrote those words. Thomas Merton declared her to be the most significant theologian of the Christian west, and former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams says that her writings “may well be the most important work of Christian reflection in the English language.” This accessible introduction to her Revelations of Divine Love, an extended reflection and commentary on a series of her mystical visions, includes an informative introduction that addresses the tradition of anchoritic spirituality as well as the historical, cultural and sociological context of Julian’s life and writings. Mary Earle’s facing-page commentary focuses on Julian’s profoundly hopeful vision of humanity and God, her creative imagery and her rigorous honesty about the spiritual life. Drawing directly from Julian’s text, the commentary addresses a variety of topics including the infinite nature of God, the life of prayer, God’s suffering with us, the eternal and undying life of the soul, the motherhood of Jesus and the motherhood of God, “all shall be well” and more.

new books—Professional Spiritual Leadership College & University Chaplaincy in the 21st Century A Multifaith Look at the Practice of Ministry on Campuses across America
Edited by The Rev. Dr. Lucy Forster-Smith
Discover how college and university chaplains support, challenge, stir the imagination of and address this generation’s urgent longing for connection and meaning.
Religion / Leadership 6 x 9, 350 pp (est), Hardcover 978-1-59473-516-5 $35.00 Available October 2013 Editor’s Home Area: St. Paul, MN The Rev. Dr. Lucy Forster-Smith is chaplain and associate dean for religious and spiritual life at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is also co-director of the Macalester Lilly Project for Vocation and Ethical Leadership, a Lilly Endowment program for the theological exploration of vocation.
Caregiver, educator, trustee of institutional traditions, public religious voice and, occasionally, prophet: in an increasingly multifaith, multicultural global world, the role of the college or university chaplain has changed. This book examines experiences and perspectives that arise at the intersection of religious practice, distinct campus culture, student counseling, and the challenges of the secular context of today’s college or university campus. Contributors who are actively engaged in the work of college chaplaincy—from educational institutions as diverse as Stanford University, Williams College, Jesuit-affiliated Creighton University and Louisiana’s historically black Dillard University, and from many faith traditions—explore the many aspects of campus ministry: serving multifaith constituencies while being anchored in a particular denomination, navigating the secular academy as religious professionals, honoring and supporting the increasingly hyphenated religious identities of young people, and more. This is a first-of-its-kind practical resource for chaplains and campus ministers, and it will provide a much-needed perspective for seminarians and pastors who are considering work in this field. Faculty and campus administrators, high school youth group leaders and others who work with today’s spiritually seeking young people will also find this book essential.

Pilgrimage—The Sacred Art Journey to the Center of the Heart
By Dr. Sheryl A. Kujawa-Holbrook
Explore the many dimensions of the pilgrimage experience and change your orientation to the world.
Religion / Spirituality 5½ x 8½, 240 pp, Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-472-4 $16.99 Dr. Sheryl A. Kujawa-Holbrook, an Episcopal priest, is a popular speaker on the topics of spiritual formation, ministry development and religious education. She is author of God Beyond Borders: Congregations Building Interreligious Communities and Born of Water, Born of Spirit, among other books. She is professor of practical theology and religious education at Claremont School of Theology, Claremont Lincoln University, and professor of Anglicanism at Bloy House, the Episcopal Theological School at Claremont.
Pilgrimage is a spiritual practice of nearly every major religion of the world. Christians travel to sites associated with the life of Jesus; Jews visit the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem and other sacred places in the Holy Land of Israel; Muslims participate in the Hajj, the journey to Mecca; Buddhists visit the sacred sites related to the life of Buddha. Not limited to those with religious roots, the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC, and Lenin’s tomb in Moscow are considered national pilgrimage sites. As a spiritual practice, pilgrimage transcends religious, national, cultural and linguistic boundaries. This fascinating look at the sacred art of pilgrimage integrates spirituality, practice, spiritual formation, psychology, world religions and historical resources. It examines how the world’s religious pilgrimages evolved as central spiritual practices and the relationship between pilgrimage and transformation. It explains what makes a place holy, and why and how some sites are so compelling that they attract thousands, even millions of pilgrims each year. Intended for both the novice and the experienced traveler, this spiritual resource provides guidelines for preparation, tips on how to organize pilgrimages and a list of resources to aid those called to the journey. “A deeply satisfying—and oftentimes rollicking— account of one of the most important religious practices on earth.” —Mark Massa, SJ, dean, School of Theology and Ministry, Boston College

Voices of Strength, Faith, Healing, Hope and Courage Created by the Editors at SkyLight Paths With Introductions by Brian D. McLaren
A celebration of men’s voices in prayer— through the ages from many faiths, cultures and traditions. This collection celebrates the rich variety of ways men around the world have called out to the Divine—with words of joy, praise, gratitude, wonder, petition and even anger—from the ancient world up to our own day. The prayers come from a broad spectrum of spiritual traditions—both East and West—including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and more. Together they provide an eloquent expression of men’s inner lives, and of the practical, mysterious, painful and joyous endeavor that prayer is. Men Pray will challenge your preconceived ideas about prayer. It will inspire you to explore new ways of prayerful expression and new possibilities for your own spiritual journey. This is a book to treasure and to share.

Spiritual Gems
of Islam Insights & Practices from the Qur’an, Hadith, Rumi & Muslim Teaching Stories to Enlighten the Heart & Mind By Imam Jamal Rahman
Refine your heart and mind with the wisdom of Islamic spirituality Over the centuries, Islamic sages have gleaned timeless spiritual insights and practices from sacred texts, meditation and knowledge of the heart— gems that have been passed down from generation to generation. This book invites you—no matter what your practice may be—to access the treasure chest of Islamic spirituality, particularly Sufism, and use its wealth to strengthen your own journey. The riches include guidance drawn from the Qur’an, sayings of the Prophet Muhammad and Sufi poets such as the thirteenth-century Rumi on cultivating awareness, intentionality and compassion for self and others. This book also features entertaining wisdom teaching stories, especially those of Mulla Nasruddin, Islam’s great comic foil, to expand the mind and heart. It breaks down barriers to accessing this ancient tradition for modern seekers by dispelling myths about the Muslim faith concerning gender bias, inclusivity and appreciation for diversity. Regardless of where you are on your spiritual journey, you will find these gems worthy additions to your own treasure chest within. “Whether you have read these classic Islamic teachings before or they are new to you, you will find wisdom, deepen your compassion and enrich your spiritual life.” —Amir Hussain, editor, Journal of the American Academy of Religion

Order Information Bookseller Support Program
We recognize our responsibility to help you, the bookseller, sell our books. While we do detailed marketing for each new book, we want you to know that we also have an ongoing national ad/PR program for each backlist book that includes print, radio, and TV appearances targeted at a broad range of specific audiences—Christian, Jewish, recovery, New Age, spiritual seeker, student, professional and general.
Desk and Examination Copy Policy
College and university instructors are entitled to one complimentary desk copy of a book adopted for course use. Desk copy requests must be submitted in writing on departmental letterhead and include course title, instructor’s name, course number, approximate enrollment and semester or quarter taught. Upon request, we e-mail review copies of books in PDF format for course adoption consideration. We believe that our prices for books suitable for course adoption are reasonable; therefore, we do not provide complimentary paper review copies. However, if a book is purchased from SkyLight Paths Publishing and then adopted for a course, upon request we will refund the full purchase price.
