Looking at Huntington’s current pace of development, there are some trends that hint at what the future holds. But, the path the town actually embarks upon will likely be determined by its various stakeholders, decision-makers and residents.

Bob Scheiner, former chair of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and current vice chair, was optimistic about the town’s future and said “there are pieces that seem to be coming together at the same time, which are great.”

Considering Melville, where Scheiner continues to work for H2M Architects and Engineers, he lauded the town’s efforts to consciously expand the 110 corridor, hoping that it will eventually have a “life beyond 95, so it becomes a little village all on its own.”

As for Huntington Station, he was hopeful that the recent groundbreaking at the Northridge site — a mixeduse development — marked the start of a bright future for the station, with master development Renaissance Downtowns next eyeing proposed artists’ residences and a hotel.

“What’s going on in Huntington Station is certainly a move in the right direction. We’d like to see it quicker,” Scheiner said.

He said the town is on track for continued expansion, marked by the ongoing burgeoning of residential development.

“I think the village has got almost everybody’s attention with the development of apartments,” Scheiner said.

“It will provide living units for all age groups — besides just our millennials — you’re talking about people that are seniors, it’s a great opportunity for them also to live in a (Continued on page 34)

While Huntington is known for many of its attractions, including upscale restaurants, quaint boutiques and iconic theaters, it might not be the same without its various art galleries, events and venues that bring in more visitors and help make Huntington a destination.

Jennifer Lau, co-owner of The Firefly Artists (180 Main St., Northport Village), said the gallery brings in people from across Long Island.

“We’ve had a few people come in every month saying that they come from the south shore or Syosset and Manhasset and they’ll come to Northport to pop by all the galleries,” she said; the gallery also promotes other businesses in the village. “I’ve developed close relationships with all the other store owners so certainly when

anybody comes into our place we give them recommendations and we always encourage people to visit other places as well.”

Dawn Enright, an assistant at Firefly, said the gallery itself also gets traffic from visitors to the John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport Village).

She added, “People will walk by us after they’ve seen a show or they’ll come here and notice us because they’re waiting for a show to start and then I would recommend places in the village where they can eat, shop or view other galleries.”

Including Firefly, Main Street in Northport Village is populated by five art galleries, Gallery Sixty Seven (67 Main St.), LaMantia Gallery (127 Main St.), Wilkes Gallery (91 Main St.) and Haven Art Gallery (155 Main St.).

The folks at A Rise Above wish to thank their friends and neighbors for their continued patronage.

In August they will be celebrating their 38 years of serving Huntington with the finest coffee and fresh-baked goodies in town.

When A Rise Above Bake Shop became the official name for the bakery, initially known as The Well Bred Loaf, little changed other than a new sign that was hoisted over the storefront at 333 Main St. in Huntington Village. In fact, even the name on the business cards stayed the same.

Owner Mary McDonald took over the bakery in 1988 when her former boss’ successful pre-packaged baked goods business took off. The longtime employees bought the retail bakery business and changed the name to A Rise Above Bake Shop in 1990. She’s kept alive the traditions that have made her shop the oldest and one of Huntington’s most popular bake shops.

They bake from scratch using only the finest ingredients like whole eggs, sweet butter, unbleached flour and Callebaut chocolates. Known for their muffins, the shop offers a selection of more than a dozen types every day. In addition to the popular pumpkin, carrot and apple muffins, there are seasonal varieties, like cranberry, peach and blueberry, as well as a line of low-fat muffins for the health conscious. Seasonal fresh fruits dictate the selections of fresh baked pies available each day. Home-baked cookies and Christmas treats are also featured.

Between these and the cakes available for all occasions, you’ll have a hard time choosing desserts.

A Rise Above is also famous for its scones, baked fresh daily on the premises. They’re the perfect accompaniment to the bake shop’s superb coffee, which is brewed from fresh ground beans from an old, established family coffeehouse in Greenwich Village.

Brewed or by the pound, the coffee is available in several gourmet flavors; try their custom mixed house blend.

The shop’s fresh baked breads include baguettes, French bread, whole wheat and seven-grain vari-

eties, plus their own Irish soda bread.

Specializing in the paintings of Eric Sloane, Green River Gallery owner Art Kerber buys, collects and sells Sloane’s paintings of barns, farms, woodsheds, plows, marshes, roads, covered bridges, skies and clouds. Sloane was a painter of landscapes, especially marsh scenes and picturesque rural vistas. His best-known painting, Earth Flight Environment, is a

mural in the lobby of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Sloane authored 38 books on American History, rural architecture, early American tools, weather, and aviation.

Many of Sloane’s aviation and cloud paintings were of views from his home on the North Shore of Long Island where he lived until the early 1950’s. Green River Gallery is also featuring several of Sloane’s autumn views, many of which were painted after he relocated to Merryall, a farm in northwestern Connecticut.

In 1975, Sloane built a home in La Tierra, near Santa Fe, which he named Las Nieves (The Clouds).

He loved weather and cloudscapes, and said he “really discovered the sky in Taos.” Clouds and weather dominated the majority of his landscapes in New England, Pennsylvania and New Mexico.

At Rocking Horse Ices, the cutest little ice cream shop in Northport, owner Diane Mondello operates her own ice cream business. Her spot at 112 Main Street was purchased in July of 2013 and the workers of Rocking Horse Ices have been giving the people of Northport more than 26 flavors of ice cream and ices for 3 wonderful years. The shop sells its favorite brands of ice cream, Schrafft’s and Sedutto premium ice cream, which are brands that the other village ice cream shops do not carry. Scheiner also believes that with “any kind of intensification,” special attention must be paid to balancing factors like parking and waste water treatment.

A frequent commentator on development and the town’s history, Old Huntington Green President Paul Warburgh also advocated for more growth in the near future, but asserted it should be done tastefully.

“I’m in favor of tasteful development. You can do it right, but these developers want to do it cheaply,” Warburgh said.

He looked to the Ice House Apartments, created by managing partner

Peter Pastorelli, as an example of development done properly with its allbrick, timeless facade.

Looking 20 years ahead, Warburgh, who would then be 96, painted an idyllic vision of the town.

“I’m a positive, forward thinker, with a view toward history,” Warburgh said.

Seeing the town’s rapid pace of development over his almost 70 years in the town, he hoped for a “real walkable downtown.”

Back to the business realm, current chamber chairman Brian Yudewitz also forecasted expansion, but in the narrower areas of boutique shopping.

“We’ve already seen it where downtown Huntington has really be-

come different. There’s more housing being built. The larger stores are becoming more boutique-like,” Yudewitz said.

Keeping up to date on his research, he believed general shopping might soon be overtaken by companies like Amazon, who are making a push toward establishing local distribution centers.

“You might be able to able to buy something online, then just run to pick it up or have it delivered,” Yudewitz said.

He likened the shift to one about 20 years back, when chains like Staples and OfficeMax started to rise to prominence, all but knocking out stationery stores and print shops.

The owners of the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport have presented a plan to the community to create a hotel in the village, another marker of the town’s trend toward expansion.

“Businesses drive the economy and your local businesses drive your local economy. I still think there’s still going to be a strong need to support local shops.”

Erica Berkowitz, co-owner of Haven Gallery, said that with art blossoming in the village, so are the other businesses.

“People who like to support the arts also like to support independently run businesses and businesses that have a curatorial eye so it’s more hand selected pieces that come with character and integrity and I think that crosses over with the gallery world,” Berkowitz said. “For example, we have people who come from New Jersey and they buy art from us but they also love Clipper Ship Tea Company so when they come here they always make it a point to stock up on their tea.”

Along with galleries, the village is known for its events that celebrate the arts, including the Annual Music and Arts Festival in Village Park.

Gina Nisi, co-owner of Carl’s Candies (50 Main St., Northport Village), said any event that drives people to the village generates more traffic for her store.

“Whenever there’s a festivity going on in the park we get busy,” she said.

“They’re always a good draw.”

She added that while parents come to the village for art shows at galleries, their kids come to the shop.

Barefoot Image owners Fred and Susan Richtberg also produce the Happenings on Main Street program, an annual occurrence featuring performances by singer-songwriters in Village Park each Friday through the summer.

“It brings people into the village,” Susan said. “We’re all connected to whomever comes in and we send them up and down the street and make sure they know all about the events.”

West of Northport, in Huntington village, there are also plenty of art galleries.

There are four galleries sprinkled throughout Huntington village, b.j. spoke gallery (299 Main St.), Chelsea Studio & Gallery (8 West Carver St.), fotofoto gallery (14 West Carver St.) and Huntington Art Center (11 Wall St.). There’s also the Heckscher Museum of Art at 2 Prime Ave., which offers educational programs and rotating

exhibitions.

Marc Feld, owner of The Optical Shoppe Of Huntington (7 Wall St., Huntington), said art galleries in the area are also a positive influence on businesses within the village.

“There’s no negative impact at all,” he said. “It brings people into town and it brings a little culture into the

town as well.”

Feld said there’s also a benefit being located next to Huntington Art Center, adding that the shop gets traffic after an art show.

Tom Northrop, partner Huntington Arts Center, said the gallery is very involved with the businesses.

“What’s great about the galleries is we’re trying to make a community with everybody and trying to connect,” he said. “We have a couple of events that incorporates everybody which I think is great.”

Kevin Larkin, president of b.j. spoke gallery, said that the gallery has had a positive impact on the village, whether it’s promoting local business to customers by making recommendations to local eateries or shops, or bringing artists from across the country into the village.

Menachem Luchins, owner of Escape Pod Comics (302 Main St.), said that he’s had artists from galleries come to his shop as customers. With other attractions like The Paramount, The Cinema Arts Center and the Huntington Arts Council, Luchins said Huntington wouldn’t be the same without the influence of the arts.

“I think that the art galleries bring in a specific kind of traffic that helps shape the general feeling of Huntington,” he said. “For my personal business, having people who appreciate visual mediums is definitely helpful.”

The Annual Summer Arts Festival is currently in full swing each TuesdaySunday at Heckscher Park, Mary Munoz, co-owner at The Olive Tree Of Huntington Village (307 Main St.), said she notices more traffic within the village whenever there’s a show.

She added, “It brings people in that are interested in seeing what the town’s about and what we offer.”
